I love mom!toph bc there's so much potential for fluff ^^ Would Lin be fascinated by newborn Su when they bring her home for the first time? And idk but something I've been thinking about is if Toph's parents come to help out after Su is born and they take care of Lin and bb Su for an entire day the time they visit and freaking out like "Toph how do I bathe her?!", "Toph I think she's hungry!", or "TOPH SHE FELL OFF THE BED OMG SHE'S CRYING WHAT DO WE DO OMG OMG" and then they have a happy ending to their day with either toph or one of her parents rocking su and her other parent playing with Lin. Srry if this was a long one, i just love thinking about mom!toph 😂

Hi Anon, thank you for the ask, and your patience! (I mean it. So so so sorry it's been delayed I have no excuses LOL)

I am with you though Mama Toph is amazing because there is so much potential for fluff. She's one of those characters that don't seem like they'd be a good parent. But Toph Beifong is full of surprises, and I think that despite what canon says, she was a great mama :')

I wonder when Lin would've gotten to see Suyin for the first time. Part of me thinks that she sees the baby when Toph and Su are discharged from the hospital, but then another part of me thinks that she would've gotten to see her baby sister the very next day or something. For the sake of this ask, I'll say she sees Su for the first time at the hospital after the baby was born :)

Lin is very curious to see her baby sister, for sure! I feel like that's all she talks about while Toph is gone, because 1, she has no idea how she now has a sister. But then she wonders what the baby looks like, and what the baby can do when she finally gets to see her. When auntie Katara helps her up on Mama's bed and sees her mom holding this little bundle, she grows quiet and very curious.

Her baby sister is pretty cute! Squishy and tiny and can't seem to do much, but cute.

Toph thinks it's funny and cute that Lin is so curious, and she can't blame her. She tries to be straight with her whenever she can, but there are questions and conversations that just have to wait until Linny is older, so Toph teases her instead lol.

And I like that idea! I think it would be super sweet if Lao and Poppy came to Republic City to visit and help Toph with the baby, although, like you said, they may not be as helpful as they try to be LOL. I have a feeling that after their trip is over, they give their daughter huge props for taking care of two kids and having a career.

But while they are in the city, they definitely try to help with the baby because they think she'll be easier than keeping Lin entertained, but oh boy they were wrong! Suyin cries and wiggles and is everywhere and nowhere at the same time—it's exhausting. Often they are ordered to play with Lin because they worry about everything and it's tiring to listen to LOL.

If Toph had a day off from parenting, I feel like it would be rather chaotic at first with Lao and Poppy babysitting. But eventually, they learn the ropes and just do their best to be present and enjoy the moment, which leads to Poppy rocking baby Su to sleep, and Lao drawing with little Lin.

Toph finds it adorable, but if you asked her, she'd probably deny she ever thought that LOL.

RWBY Verse

(Ideas figured out with the help up @erudite-rebel and @queen-thunder-thighs)

- Mai is from an upper class family in Mistral that is definitely on the more bigoted side when it comes to people different from them. Mai doesn’t share their values and doesn’t discriminate against those around her who are different than she is. She doesn’t really have a desire to be a Huntress, but she is perfectly capable of defending herself with her knife throwing skills. Her past is still the same as it was in the show-her parents gave her whatever she wanted as long as she was well-behaved, quiet and didn’t speak unless she was spoken to so as a result she barely says anything or shows any emotion at all. Mai’s semblance is a sort of telekinesis that she uses to move her weapons around while still having her hands free. Her age in the RWBY verse is 17.

- Toph is also from Mistral, but on the complete opposite spectrum of Mai. Her parents coddled her too much because of her blindness, despite her being just as capable of defending herself as someone who can see. Her parents are nice enough, but their overprotectiveness makes it so that she doesn’t want to be around them at all and does everything possible that she can to avoid them. Unlike Fox, she doesn’t have an ADA because her semblance allows her to feel movements in the Earth and know where people and places are at any given moment as long as she’s on solid ground. She goes to Sanctum Academy and is currently in training to be a Huntress. Her age in the RWBY verse is 14.

- Katara and her older brother Sokka grew up raised by their grandmother in Mantle after their mother was killed in a Grimm attack. After that happened, their father, who was a sort of retired Huntsman, decided to take up Huntsmen work again to provide for his children. But she hasn’t seen him since. Katara has a huge problem with Atlas and the way its people treat the citizens of Mantle. She isn’t a Faunus, but she’s lived in Mantle her whole life and has seen their treatment nearly firsthand. She’s determined to become a Huntress herself, the best that she can be, so she can help Mantle. Katara’s semblance has not been unlocked as of yet, but her weapon is a bladed whip infused with water dust. Her age in the RWBY verse is 16.

- Suki grew up an orphan, and she is also one of Robyn’s Happy Huntresses. She’s just as determined as Katara is to see that Mantle gets better conditions, mainly where the hole in the wall is. She doesn’t know what her semblance is, and she doesn’t feel a need to find it because she’s just as capable of a fighter without it. Instead of a crossbow staff, she has two small fan crossbows that fit neatly on either arm. She’s training to become a Huntress, but she’s also not opposed to doing things that aren’t exactly in line with the law, especially when it comes to Atlas. Her age in the RWBY verse is 17, like Mai.

Hi Anon, thank you for the ask! I don't mind answering this question, although I don't typically have many headcanons revolving around this. But! I love a good headcanon conversation, so I'm happy to answer questions.

Content Warning: Discussion of Self-Harm

I feel like for this situation, Toph would likely self-harm before she was in a relationship with Kanto, maybe kept it a secret from him if possible. I think that Toph would probably justify this by saying that this is just how she deals with stress or that it's something she does and has always done. It's become a habit and even when things are good, she feels the urge to self-harm. When things are bad, it's a given.

When Kanto finds out, he's heartbroken to know that this is something she feels the need to do. Part of him wants to scream and yell and hold her in his arms until she stops this, but he knows that won't help matters. I think he would try to approach the situation with small questions to gently prod her. Just to get an idea of why she' s doing this to herself. I feel like Kanto wouldn't rest until he helped Toph stop, mostly because he's so in love with her and he can't stand the idea of his favorite person in the world hurting herself.

I can see him sitting on the bed with her, gently cleaning her injuries, applying medicine and ointments onto her scars, placing bandages. He's very careful and gentle not to hurt her and I think Toph would be really quiet during all of this. She'd probably be surprised to know that there's someone that would take this much time to tend to her and her wounds, and she's rather speechless. Kanto would ask her if there are other places that he should work on, and when she shakes her head, I can see him placing a soft kiss on her forehead and laying with her. If it's too early for bed, he'd make her some food and a cup of tea, and they'd talk about all the little things in their day. Maybe at some point they talk about her self-harming or other deep topics, but for now, they're just enjoying the fact that time is slowing down and the world is a little less hectic in her bedroom, and they soak that in. They just sit and eat and talk and enjoy each other's presence, and I think that would become their routine. Kanto would come over more often and would help her with her wounds, address any new ones, make her food and tea, and just stay with her through the night.

I feel like Toph would ask Kanto why he keeps coming over or staying the night, but when it's apparent that he's not going anywhere, she just... accepts this new routine.

And after a while she gets used to it, and she likes it. More than any of her other routines she used to have.

Suki can’t remember the last time she’s ever been sick, or even had a fever for that matter. As a warrior of Kyoshi, she keeps her body and her mind in top condition at all times. She works out regularly, she meditates regularly, she eats well. She takes great pride in the health of her body.

The better question is, what isn’t a pet peeve of Mai’s? I’m mostly kidding. The biggest one, however, is being forced into a box she’s not comfortable in. She knows how to play the role of the dutiful, quiet daughter, but that doesn’t mean she likes it. It’s not who she is, who she’s comfortable being. She needs adventure and freedom, and those things aren’t afforded to the daughter of the governor of Omashu. That’s the biggest reason she jumped at the chance to leave the second Azula showed up.

Toph has a lot of anger that she has no problems showing. She knows how to keep her anger in check in front of people she can’t afford to get angry around, like her parents and Master Yu. But once she’s with Aang’s small group, she doesn’t feel a need to conceal her anger, so she simply doesn’t. It’s almost as explosive as a Fire Bender’s, but also in a different way.

toph's childhood is a very intriguing subject. While Zuko's childhood was arguably the worst, I can't imagine being told that I couldn't do anything or that I wouldn't been good at anything because I was disabled. I've also been thinking a lot about lao and poppy's traditions and expectations. What if Toph wasn't allowed to eat as much bc of beauty standards? What if Toph had to follow a very strict schedule? I can't see Toph speaking much either.

Hi Anon, thank you for the ask! And I agree, Toph's childhood has a lot to unpack and would definitely be a super interesting subject to discuss!

So I don't know a ton about traditional expectations the Earth Kingdom may have had, but I would venture to guess that beauty, rank, health, etc., would be important factors in how the rest of the world treats the upper echelons of the Earth Kingdom.

Toph being blind and a woman would likely make the Beifong status take a hit, so I can see Lao and Poppy trying to overcompensate by making her look pretty and quiet/a dutiful wife. Not sure how early that 'preparation' would begin, because in my mind it doesn't make sense to deprive a kid from food if they're still developing, but there might be a certain age where this preparation for married life begins.

There are people that see Toph's sheltering as a sign of Lao and Poppy's love and fear that their daughter may get hurt if she does things on her own, and there are those that see it as a sign that they were ashamed to have a disabled child and didn't want to show the family's weakness. My headcanons usually fall around the 'overprotective parents' route, but that's probably because I'm a sap at heart and think that their actions are primarily to try and protect Toph in their own way.

But I think in the scenario where Toph's upbringing is more about having her prepared for married life, then I would say your thoughts on schedules, eating, and speaking out would be accurate. I usually imagine there's a point in Toph's childhood where she notices that she's treated differently, and while at first she protests, she learns that keeping her mouth shut and running off in the middle of the night is easier than trying to explain that she's more capable than she looks.

But like I said, Toph's childhood is such an interesting subject, there are tons of headcanons and thoughts about how she was raised and whether or not Lao and Poppy were truly bad people, or just misunderstood or misguided.
