i apologize for all the posts about r/banpitbulls but i need to get my thoughts out there cause it is WILD and it’s hurting my brain how conspiratorial that subreddit is. I'll put it all under the readmore to not be annoying.

a) they believe the several breeds collectively under the bully breed moniker are actually all the same kind of dog, have no distinction whatsoever, and separating them into their established breeds (staffies, amstaffs, APBT’s, american bullies, bull terriers, dogo argentinos, etc etc etc) is trying to muddy the waters and is a tactic for the pitnutters to explains away the all knowing statistics

b) they believe in the 1 drop rule, where any dog with any amount of bully in them is basically a monster and needs to be drawn and quartered euthanized or at the very least sterilized, muzzled, and never allowed withing 30 feet of anyone not wearing plate mail.

c) they believe there is some kind of well funded pit-lobby who is paying off journalists for pro-pitbull thinkpieces to convince people to...idk, adopt more dogs? the goals and who is funding said lobby or even in it are never really discussed. it just exists and evilly wants you, yes you, to fork out 100 bucks to the local non-profit shelter for a pit-mix which makes money for... absolutely no one.  

d) they believe pitbulls are uniquely violent and every single dog who falls in that category is just waiting to eat a baby. 

e) never talk about any other dog violence and seem to believe every other mauling or significant bite is just mislabeled (as it should’ve been labelled a pit) or a freak accident (though this is obviously not extended to pitbulls whose bites are calculated, premeditated, and sadistic)

f) believe that pitbulls have a switch that can possibly happen at any time to make then tear your face off. Even though the vast majority of the dogs in that grouping will never have a significant problem (out approximately 18 million in the US, you have around 4k bites reported in a year and 30ish deaths in the same time), this doesn’t matter since that .001% could kill you while you were sleeping so every dog that even has a whiff of ‘pitbull’ is a severe risk and should not be trusted around anyone ever. Yes, including Peachy, the slightly overweight 10 year old dog at your local dog park who spends the whole time there waddling after her owner with a ball in her mouth. That one especially.

g) the fault lies entirely on the breed(s) and can never be fixed. pitbulls have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, anyone who says they do have been brainwashed by the shadowy pit-lobby, and all the dogs should either be euthanized or sterilized to extinction. the fact that these are the most abused groups of dogs means basically zero because they aren’t actually domesticated dogs, instead are all completely secretly feral (source: bro trust me) and should be placed in the same category as people keeping a lion as a pet.

h) don’t ever talk about the prey drive in all dogs or that most dogs will attack any small animal it can get its mouth on if not properly socialized and/or desensitized. if a pitbull kills a cat that wandered into its yard, it is because the pitbull is uniquely cruel and evil. no other breed is ever mentioned and are apparently perfect angels who would never hurt a fly and I guess my childhood aussie/border collie mix who we had to muzzle on walks because she wanted to murder every dog she locked eyes on was secretly a pitbull in disguise.

i) constantly tout the 65% of all dog related deaths vs being 6% of the population statistic. This statistic is taken from the amount of US incidents from 2005 to 2017, where pitbulls, over TWELVE YEARS caused 284 deaths. Any other year before or after this is not mentioned and it is always these twelve years and fails to consider recent estimates put bullys up to 20% of the US dog population.

j) they often call pitbull owners aggressive and cruel and stupid and brutish and sadistic and lacking in empathy ‘just like their dogs’ which is interesting becasue bully breeds are incredibly cheap and easy to get and are generally most commonly found in cities in poorer populations, most historically non-white neighborhoods. idk just kind of weird they seem so fucking mad at a dog breed stereotypically found in POC households (in the US) while also really REALLY comfortable with calling the dog’s owners aggressive and dumb... 

It’s just...staggering. I feel like a stumbled upon a rabbit hole, but the rabbits are all conspiracy theorists who look at dog mauling videos and photos all day and who all seem to not understand how dogs or animals even work. While also being a little bit racist and classist. 

Bully breeds don’t have ‘switch’; they are dogs with good and bad days and a lot of external factors go into dog attacks and a lot of bites can be lessened with proper care and attention given, like not leaving your children around ANY dog that outweighs them in pure muscle and getting your dog neutered/spade. A lot of the fatalities are a result of negligent owners, abused animals (of which pitbulls are the most likely group of dogs to be abused), and/or freak incidents, and even non-pitbull dogs kill small children and the elderly every year for the same reasons. Given the staggering amount of bullies in the US, if they were uniquely dangerous, then a LOT MORE violent incidents toward people would occur every year, but they don't, proven by how you have to lump over a decade's worth of numbers for the big "damning" golden statistic which...

The reason why the golden statistic is only from 2005-2017 is because in the years preceding that, Rottweilers made up a larger percentage of dog-related fatalities, sometimes even outpacing 'pitbulls' on some years as the ‘big bad dog’ changes with public opinion, dog breed popularity, and time. The reason you see so many pit-bull related attacks over similar incidents with other breeds in the news is because they garner the most attention as other non-pitbull dog-related deaths have occurred THIS YEAR but they get a quarter of the news articles as the outrage market isn’t as frothing at the mouth for a belgian malinois or a husky killing an infant as it is pitbulls. These dogs are not uniquely evil or violent; they are an animal with higher disposition towards prey drive and dog related aggression combined with a large strong body and determination that requires the same firm training and care as all dog breeds like them but that does not mean each one of them needs to be treated like Hannnibal Lector in sheep's clothing.

This isn’t a problem that would go away if all bully breeds disappeared tomorrow, as evidenced in some large cities with breed specific legislation where dog bites did not decrease significantly, or even increased after the bans. A different breed would take its place. A new dog would become enemy number one. People would still get attacked and harmed and tragedies would still happen.

But that’s the risk when dealing with animals. Dogs are domesticated, but they are still instinctual, non-human predators and they can always pose some form of danger no matter how you breed them. Instead of advocating for mass euthanasia or blanket bans, these people should instead be advocating for better training, better breeding, keeping dogs on leashes, getting dogs neutered, treating these dogs as the large powerful dogs they are, etc etc etc.

But thats too complicated and requires some form of empathy and care for the dog breeds in question. It's a lot easier to come up with a shadowy pit lobby and the mythological switch and label them all 'psychotic feral monsters just waiting to eat babies' and call poor minority people sadistic and cruel for keeping a cheap breed as a family pet/guard dog and watch dog mauling videos all day then it is to do a little more research and learn a single thing about how dogs work.

“Wolfdogs aren’t cute” - this is wholly based on your taste of dog, I think they’re super cute 😉

“We don’t need to cross a wild animal with one that’s already been domesticated from it.” - no one is crossing wild animals. Literally no one. The “wolves” used in Wolfdogs are all just Wolfdogs at this point in time, really. This has been done for so long most Wolfdogs are F4 or higher.

“Even if its amount of wolf content is low, it still has genes from a wild animal and still has potential to pose danger to humans.”- Wolfdogs are not wild animals- please see above. Plus low contents Wolfdogs are mostly dog. If you’re dog is 85% lab and 15% poodle you will see very few if any real poodle traits. That’s how genetics work.

“Wolfdogs aren’t legal everywhere. In many places where wolfdogs do happen to be legal, if a wolfdog bites someone—even if she’s just playing—she may be required to be euthanized.” - This part is true! The rabies vaccine is not federally recognized for “hybrids” even though Wolfdogs are technically not even hybrids. Meaning if your Wolfdog bites someone the head must be sent in for rabies testing. Due to this most owners of Wolfdogs are very careful with their animals. It is also true that lots of places are illegal and even states that are legal may have conflicting county or city laws. Due to this- breeders will verify your state/county/city laws before selling to you.

“Wolves and Wolfdogs are highly dangerous, skittish, aggressive, and territorial animals that are insanely hard to manage let alone train.” - wolves in the wild or under socialized will Wolfdogs can definitely be skittish and aggressive. This can be true for any under socialized dog. Lots of higher content animals can have SSA or WWS, which come with their struggles but lower contents and even some higher contents depending on the lines do not have these issues. Lots of Wolfdogs Are still rather timid with new people and situations but majority of the time they would rather leave the situation than try to fight or bite over it.

“They can almost never be house broken, require speciality veterinary and nutritional care, and are illegal in most of the united states!”- most people I know who have Wolfdogs house them inside at least part of the time without issues. Lots of people also feed them a regular kibble diet, though raw diets are popular amongst most dog owners at this time- not just Wolfdogs owners. I know people with corgis, silkens etc who feed raw. I also work in vet care and there are certainly some vets not comfortable seeing them but most don’t mind and I personally have never had someone refuse my girls. Hela has even been to specialists to have her health testing done with no issues. During Covid, might I add, so I couldn’t even go in with her. :)

“They pose a danger to anyone who steps foot on your property because to them that is Home and they will protect Home with their lives.”- Wolfdogs are some of the LEAST protective dogs I’ve ever come across. Most of them will not defend your home or property.

“Over 90% of all wolf deaths in the wild are caused by territorial fights between other packs.”- I could not find these statics anywhere. Wild wolf populations especially in the US are horribly low. Most die to starvation, poaching and disease.

“They are highly highly dangerous and have no business being in captivity”- how many zoo wolves have killed their handlers? I’ve interacted with so many Wolfdogs I’ve lost count. Never been attacked. Ask me how many spaniels have attacked me.

“It was expensive, dangerous, and mostly heartbreaking.”- this is based on someone experience working only with rescue Wolfdogs. Who are usually byb and under socialized and possibly even been abused. Not a valid point.

“Each one lived half of its natural life span because they were bred by backyard breeders who didn't give a rats ass about the genetics of the breeding stock and they had to be put down due to hereditary ailments.”- my last point stands here too.

“Breeding wolfdogs is incredibly unethical and continuing to support them is lowering the genetic diversity if wild wolves. Where do you think the wolf blood comes from? From wolves poached from the wild.”- no wolfdog comes from wild wolf DNA at this time. No one is going out to get a wolf from the wild to breed.

I am very against owning exotic pets (as in wild animals, not animals that are considered exotic just for veterinary purposes but are still domesticated), and I know at least a few of you have expressed a similar sentiment. I was just wondering about whether you as vets are ever obligated to care for exotic pets (esp if they're legal in your area), and also what the logistics of that are? Like, do you usually have the ability to even treat these animals effectively? If not, what options do the owners have to get their "pets" treatment? Also, if someone tries to bring in an illegal "pet", are you obligated to report it?

I live in a state that lets you own basically anything, and work at a clinic that will see any animal that walks in the door. Unlike human med, we don’t actually have an obligation to treat anything. If someone brought a marmoset or something to a small animal clinic the doctors there could say “sorry we aren’t equipped for this” and send them somewhere else. Alternatively, they also can legally triage any animal or euthanize if it is suffering, including native wildlife, regardless of experience level. We have 0 obligation to report illegally obtained wildlife as long as there are no welfare concerns. And frankly, I make a point of telling clients that. We’re not the DNR. We’re not any kind of wildlife enforcement. I want to vaccinate and deworm that raccoon regularly, and if a client is scared that I will report them, they won’t let me. I may not agree with keeping that animal but I would much rather have it cared for by a vet. Now I can (and do) encourage owners to get the proper permits for their animal, but I can’t force them. My clinic does require permits for desexing native wildlife (skunks, raccoons, red foxes, etc) per the DNR, which sometimes encourages people to get a permit because who tf wants an intact male raccoon in their house? Some of those animals we can actually treat quite effectively. Some owners are able to medicate their wild pets at home with minimal fuss. Others can’t. Wild animals are notoriously bad about pill picking and if they have to be restrained daily/twice daily for meds, that can lead to some serious bite risks and welfare concerns. Some conditions that would be perfectly treatable in a cat or dog are not manageable in a wild pet. We do what we can and encourage clients to be realistic about what their pet will tolerate.

The logistics vary by species and by clinic. One of the most important things to remember is that there is no approved rabies vaccine for wild animals. That includes raccoons, skunks, foxes, coatis, primates, and any exotic pet that isn’t a ferret (which is domesticated). It even includes wolfdogs. With that in mind, we have to be really careful how we handle these animals. I’ve worked with some extremely social wild pets that probably wouldn’t bite me. But they could, and that’s what matters because if their wild pet bit someone, the department of health would require them euthanized and submitted for rabies testing. Regardless of my feelings on owning these animals, I don’t want to put the pet or the owner through that. So we handle these animals with bite gloves at the minimum, and sedate them if needed. And sedation is usually a “tank down”. This method is more stressful, but again, it’s for safety. While it’s still probably a lower risk, you do have to get in closer contact with an animal to administer an injection, which puts everyone at risk. I have some patients that I know can be distracted with food, gently restrained with bite gloves, and won’t flinch when I examine and even vaccinate them. Others I may not know well, or are displaying behaviors that make me concerned for the safety of myself and my staff. We do it on a case by case basis, but they have to be treated carefully. This is why I get very frustrated when I see tv vets handling wild pets freely. That puts that patient at risk. Any bite, no matter the intention or severity, is considered potential rabies exposure from these type of animals.

Primates are an exception. Tank down always. There are way too many diseases we can get from primates. My clinic will only see them once we are gowned up and have them tanked down with isoflurane. No exceptions. For larger animals or animals that aren’t safe to bring into the clinic, we can do house calls. I’m working on getting hot snake trained so I can work with venomous snakes, but that will involve only handling them with equipment and probably doing mostly house calls unless an animal needs hospitalization. My boss has discussed locking cages and rooms with a key that only I have so no one can accidentally open it, so it’s not something to be taken lightly. In a few weeks I’m gonna be doing a walkthrough to make sure some non-domestic canids are healthy. Is that as good as a physical exam? No. But unless someone with large exotics (i.e. big cats, wolves, coyotes, non-domestic hoofstock, etc) trains them for medical handling, there’s only so much I can do without anesthesia. I’m not risking my life or my staff’s lives because an owner thinks their pet lion is “friendly”. What those hands off exams look like are honestly what we’d do with a really fractious dog or cat. We can give them a visual once over to make sure their coat looks healthy, there’s no obvious lumps or lesions, their gait is normal, and they are mentally appropriate. If they need a physical, we use drugs. As long as we’ve done a visual exam and established a client-doctor relationship, we can prescribe meds. So if someone’s rattlesnake as a respiratory infection, I can do a visual exam and say “yup, looks like it. have some ceftazidime”. Again, not as ideal as a physical exam but it allows us to treat animals that we can’t handle.

Because honestly, she is NOT a saint. Being a woman and being Joe Exotic’s victim are NOT reasons to ignore how problematic she is and hold her up to be some sort of hero. And yes, she may be the victim of misogyny, but that in no way excuses her problematic behavior. Being oppressed does not give you license to oppress others. 

And it certainly doesn’t give you license to say, not pay your workers. Like the millionaire Carole Baskin does. She calls them “volunteers” but come on. These people are caring for tigers. Which can bite limbs off.  And getting in-depth training to do so at the same time. I don’t know about you, but that sounds less like a “volunteer” position and more like an actual job that, you know, deserves payment. And it’s not like Carole Baskin can’t afford it; she is a millionaire. 

Calling your workers “volunteers” when they do a job that more than deserves a regular salary is wrong, plain and simple. I mean, Joe and Doc Antle paid their workers-and they’re complete scumbags! They underpaid their workers, but still. These complete scumbags pay their workers where your precious Carole Baskin doesn’t. 

And then there’s the fact that she works with PETA. That PETA.

You know, the people who deliberately spread misinformation about autism. Who compare murdered women to pieces of meat in their advertising. Who create unbelievable cruel advertising comparing fat women to whales. Who use the Holocaust as a marketing tool.  Who fund domestic terrorism. 

And they’re not just problematic with humans. They’re terrible at their stated purpose too. They steal and euthanize dogs. And also don’t believe animals have a right to live.  And they spread the myth that pit bulls are inherently aggressive. 

Any smart animal rights activist would steer clear of these people. And most do. Yet Carole Baskin, experienced animal rights activist, doesn’t. 

She chooses to work with these bigoted fools who give animal rights a bad name. Why? 

You’ll note that I said nothing about her husband. That’s because I don’t have all the facts to make a judgement on whether she killed him or not. He might very well be in Costa Rica with a mistress. Who knows? 

 But just because she’s marginally better than Joe Exotic and Doc Antle, doesn’t mean she’s a good person. She may have a good rating on the charity websites or whatever, but she’s not a good person. Not in the slightest. 

And she certainly doesn’t deserve all this praise and attention.

So, this is a tricky topic. It’s considered ‘common knowledge’ that the rabies vaccine is not approved for use in wolfdogs. BUT, this ‘common knowledge’ is actually not quite all right, if you look at the actual laws and science. 

Federally and per the USDA, all wolfdogs except for F1 wolf/dog crosses *are* domestic dogs (see 9 CFR 1.1 – ”Dog means any live or dead dog (Canis Lupus Familiaris) or any dog-hybrid cross.” ). This includes low contents, high contents, mid contents, F1′s other than those with a dog parent, and so forth. 

The rabies vaccine is approved on a species by species basis, and since wolfdogs are dogs and wolves and dogs are the same species with dogs being regarded as a subspecies of wolf, we can say that yes, the rabies vaccine works on wolfdogs.

But, Animal Rights organizations (specifically HSUS and PETA) stepped in and lobbied the US government to deny the approval under the argument that should they deem the vaccine effective, they are advocating private ownership. And since the government didn’t want to endorse that, they didn’t put wolfdogs on the label for animals that are covered on the vaccine. So, no, it has absolutely nothing to do with science or legalities, it’s just a political move fed by anti wolfdog sentiment. They would rather people’s animals be euthanized over a scratch than to advocate for ownership of them. Until the wolfdog community is able to organize itself and make another push to get it on label like it scientifically should be, then yeah, the protocol is to treat them as unvaccinated and either quarantine or euthanize them in case of a bite or scratch.

The two raccoons were euthanized, but the police were unable to locate the first that had been trapped and released. Although health officials agreed with the diagnosis of distemper, the animals are being tested for rabies. In their Facebook post, police warned:12

Raccoons Aren’t the Only Animals Eating Fermented Fruit

Rabies virus variants are distributed in distinct geographic regions. The majority of rabies affecting raccoons occur along the Eastern Seaboard from Maine to Florida. Skunks are more highly affected in the Midwest from the Canadian border to Texas and in small regions in California.22

The condition is a preventable viral disease most often transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.23 The rabies virus can also affect humans and domestic dogs. Cross-species infection from raccoons to dogs or humans is possible and the majority of human deaths from rabies are caused by dog bites.24 

Rabies Presents in Five Stages

With the exception of Antarctica, rabies is found throughout the world.25 The virus is transmitted in the saliva of an infected animal and enters the body through the wound. The disease progresses in five unique stages26  — incubation, prodrome, acute neurological syndrome, coma and death.

• Incubation — The incubation period happens after you’ve been exposed to saliva of an infected animal. It usually lasts between three and 12 weeks but it may be as little as five days or more than two years. The closer the bite is to your brain, the sooner you may expect to see symptoms.

Knowing where you are going to take your dog for a walk is good, but owners have to know that anything can change your plan for you. If a dog becomes excited, angry or scared by a car that backfires, children that suddenly enter the scene running up to you, a neighborhood dog or squirrels running around in the grass, they could simply run off, give chase in pursuit of something desired or engage in a fight.

#3 Unknown Dangers

Let’s face it, dogs can be very curious. Those who are food driven can pick up on the scent of tasty morsels dropped by strangers and want to give it a try. Others must investigate what dog has visited a particular tree or patch of grass and spend time sniffing. Grass grazers often graze on other plants and foliage as well. This could be unhealthy and toxic. Dogs also each one another’s poop (YUCK!) and many are lovers of cat poop. A dog that consumes the poop of a dog with a compromised immune system could easily catch something.

Just because you have a fun loving dog doesn’t mean that other people do. A dog off leash that wanders over to make friends with another dog could be met with an angry bite. It is never a good idea to assume that just because a dog looks friendly it is. Having your dog on a leash gives you more control in case your dog gets scared, but.

#5 You Could Lose Your Dog

When dogs are excited, angry or scared, many of them lose their natural self-preservation skills and will run into the street, fight another dog (even though this might be out of character) or completely disregard their owner’s commands. The commands “stop, sit, come, out and leave it,” often fall on deaf ears when their emotions run high. A dog running away is not the only way a dog owner could lose their dog. Injuries sustained from being hit by a car could result in the loss of the dog’s life. A dog running around could easily be either stolen or picked up and taken to a shelter. Dogs can travel great distances in a short period of time. If they are taken to a shelter outside of the area the owners think they are in, they could be adopted out or euthanized. Also, if a dog gets into a fight with another dog, it could lead to an investigation that could result in the dog being put down.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is a dog lover. A lot people hate dogs. In many cultures, it is believed that dogs are to be kept outside and not domesticated. Some just aren’t tolerant of wet noses and shedding dog hair; while still others are terrified of them. It is also worth noting that many people are simply allergic to dogs. Exposure to them can cause a variety of reactions from itchy skin and difficulty breathing to full cardiac arrest. People with severe allergies normally carry an EpiPen (Epinephrine auto-injector). In order to assure the greatest safety to your dogs, walk them on a leash until there is a safe place, such as your own fenced in property or an off leash dog park.

(Read this aloud. It’s a lot funnier that way.)

Ducks reach full size in about five weeks. They are cute and fluffy for two weeks, and then they grow up. They can live between 10 and 20 years—and sometimes longer—depending on the breed.

Ducks poop everywhere. You cannot train them to relieve themselves in a certain area.

You can’t raise a duck and release him or her into the wild. Mallards are wild ducks. Most other ducks were domesticated by humans. That means they no longer have wild instincts, can’t migrate, and are usually too fat to fly. It’s illegal to own wild ducks without a permit, and it’s illegal to release domestic ducks on public land. In some areas, it’s considered abandonment and can result in cruelty charges. It’s also a death sentence for the ducks, as those raised by humans can’t fend for themselves in the wild. (And did you know that bread is bad for ducks? It lacks the basic nutrients that they need in order to grow and thrive.)

Avian veterinarians who are qualified to treat your special companion are few and far between. You may find a vet who treats parakeets but not one who will treat your duck. If you do find one, expect to spend $80 to $120 for a basic check-up.

There is a reason why the term “sitting duck” was coined. Ducks need predator-proof pens with hardware cloth on all the sides, including the top and bottom. They must be in these secure pens from dusk to sunrise in some areas and at all times in other areas. Secure pens that you build yourself start at around $300. Your property is not an exception simply because you haven’t seen a predator on it or you live on a pond. Raccoons reach through chicken-wire and climb over chain-link with ease. Eagles and hawks don’t need to carry off your duck—they can just grab a piece of him or her and do a lot of damage that way.

You won’t be able to take a vacation for the next 10 to 20 years—or more—because there’s no such thing as a duck sitter. You will realize this too late, when your vacation is already planned. Ducks require complicated care. Note: None of your friends or family wants to watch your duck while you’re on vacation. They asked me to tell you that.

“Ducks are more maintenance than the space shuttle.” Bob Tarte wrote that line in his book Enslaved by Ducks. Believe him. Don’t get a duck. Just read his book instead.

Ducks are extremely emotional—more emotional than cats and dogs. If you raise one duck and that duck depends on you, you can’t leave him or her alone for even one day without the duck missing you and getting upset, depressed, or scared when you’re gone. Don’t do that to a duck. Ducks need duck friends.

Ducks are time-consuming. They need twice-daily care for at least a half-hour each time, every day of the year, rain or shine. They won’t thrive unless they get much more of your time than that. But that is the bare minimum amount of time required twice a day, every single day, without fail.

Ducks don’t think that you should have hobbies. Want to meet friends for dinner? You have to put your duck away before dusk first. Want to have brunch on a Saturday? You need to clean the duck ponds first. Like to knit, sew, paint, listen to music, go to the movies, watch TV, play games, or ride a bike? Forget it. Your sole “hobby” if you have a duck … is your duck. That’s it.

Do you live with your parents? Absolutely do not get a duck. You think you’ll keep the duck forever, but you will grow up and get interested in your friends or go to college. And you can’t keep a duck in your dorm room. Your parents absolutely do not want to care for your duck while you’re on a date or away at school. Your parents will give your duck away and tell you that he or she died. Seriously. They told me to tell you that. Don’t get a duck until you own your own home, can pay vet bills on your own, and can afford food and amenities for your duck.

Do you rent your home or live in an apartment? Every year, thousands of people get ducks, only to give them up because their landlord, girlfriend, boyfriend, parents, or neighbors complained. Giving up a duck means that the duck will probably be euthanized or will suffer. Do not get a duck first and then research whether or not you’re allowed to have one. Some ducks are extremely loud, too loud for neighbors. Way, way too loud. Trust me on this.

Do you have a dog? Is he old and friendly? Wouldn’t hurt a fly? You’re wrong. Your duck will panic and flap in a way that will engage your dog’s innate prey instinct. Your dog will pick up your duck and shake him or her to death while you watch in horror. Yes, your sweet little dog will do that. Your dog is not an exception. And it will be your fault, not your dog’s. Your dog is just being a dog. Don’t get a duck if you have a dog. Your duck will taunt your dog. Your duck will chase and bite your dog until your dog bites him or her back. That will also be your fault. Your duck is just being a duck.

Your duck is social and needs duck friends. Your duck does not want to live with just you. Your duck needs other ducks, and more ducks means more poop. (See number two above.)

Every duck is a unique individual. Ducks are particular and don’t automatically get along with other ducks. Two male ducks can kill each other. Too many male ducks can kill a female duck. Larger ducks will pick on smaller ducks, and stronger ducks will try to kill weaker or injured ducks.

Ducks bite. Some male ducks bite all the time. They don’t bite because they’re mean. They bite because they love you. They bite hard. They bruise. They constantly bite your ankles, hands, arms, feet, and face. You must wear long sleeves and long pants and socks and shoes in order to visit your duck. 100 degrees outside? Make sure you’re wearing long pants and long sleeves if you’re going visit your duck. Muscovy ducks have a ridge to their beak that can tear your skin off. Muscovy drakes often also protect their territory and may decide that you’re a threat. Then they attack you. They fly at you and beat their wings at you—their wing span is 6 feet—bruising you and giving you welts. Their talons can be 1.5 inches long, and they’ll try to claw at you in midair. They bite and tear at you and can chase you down faster than you can run away.

Ducks make a huge mess when they eat. Duck food attracts rats and mice. In some areas, mice attract snakes, lots of snakes. Duck poop attracts flies. Having a pet duck means having rats and flies. It’s a package deal. Your neighbors will love that. Think you can kill the rats? Poison them, and they’ll die in your duck pond, poisoning the water that your ducks drink. Or their carcasses will attract predators. Try to trap and release them instead. Come wintertime, you can find them conveniently living in the roof of your house or in your basement for warmth.

Having a duck means hearing awful horror stories from everyone around you. People will think that because you have a duck, you must really want to hear their story about how a duck flew into their windshield. Or how their dog brought a duck in through the doggie door and spattered blood all over the walls! Or how their neighbor’s kid had a duckling but dropped the little bird on his or her head, and the animal had seizures and vomited before dying. Or how your neighbors had ducks, but raccoons climbed into their pen and ate them. Or how someone’s grandma had ducks and killed and plucked and cooked and served them for dinner. Or how a hawk flew down and ripped into a duck, but no one ever took the animal to a veterinarian. Or how there’s this duck at the park who limps and drags his or her body along, but that’s just nature! Gosh, aren’t those stories great? People can’t wait to share their duck stories! (All of these are actual stories told to me by people who could not wait to share their wonderful duck anecdote.)

Horrible duck stories will give you nightmares—except you’ll dream that your own duck is suffering or in danger or being eaten or being maimed. You will have this nightmare a lot.

You will worry about your duck every day that you have him or her.

Rabies

Pet owners know their companions get a rabies vaccination at the Vet, but how much do you really know about the disease? Rabies is a viral disease of mammals that infects the central nervous system. It travels directly to the brain and causes death. While deadly, rabies is a preventable disease. In the United States it is rare for humans to contract rabies, only about 3 or 4 cases a year. But in other countries, “ Around 59,000 people die from rabies every year, according to a 2015 study published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. The overwhelming majority are in Asia and Africa.” (CDC) A startling fact is that “40% of people who are bitten by suspect rabid animals are children under 15 years of age.” (WHO)

 In the U.S., even though the number of humans infected has been dramatically reduced, the threat remains very real. The CDC said. “During 2014, 50 states and Puerto Rico reported 6,033 cases of rabies in animals and 1 human rabies case to CDC.” More than 90% of the animals reported to be rabid are in the wild. The top four animals are raccoons, bats, skunks, and foxes. Rabid bats or domestic dogs and cats that have been bitten by an infected wild animal pose the greatest risk for humans in the U.S.

 Surprisingly, the CDC reported four times as many rabid cats than dogs in 2014 in the U.S. Not as many cat owners are taking their cats to a Veterinarian for the vaccination and this compounds the threat when the unvaccinated cat is let outside where it can more easily come in contact with an infected wild animal. Something else to consider is that bat bites are so tiny they are commonly missed on humans yet alone under a layer of fur.

 The way the rabies virus is transmitted is most commonly through saliva but it can also be from contact with brain/nervous tissue. If bitten, the most effective way to decrease the chance for infection is to wash the area with soap and water thoroughly and promptly follow up with a doctor. If your doctor thinks there is a risk, or the animal is confirmed to have rabies, you will need a series of vaccinations called postexposure prophylaxis or PEP. With proper wound care and PEP, death is almost entirely avoidable. Early symptoms are flu like so it can be difficult to tell something serious is wrong. There are more specific symptoms that appear as the disease progresses such as, confusion, insomnia, anxiety, hallucinations, some paralysis, hypersalivation, difficulty swallowing, agitation, and fear of water. But once these symptoms present, the disease is too advanced and death is imminent, usually with days.

 Rabies is a very old disease even dating back to ancient Egypt. One would think that today we would be able to control, if not eliminate, this dread disease. However, the poorer the area, the higher the risk or exposure to rabies (unvaccinated stray dogs) and the less they have access to treatments. The World Health Organization says that, “Vaccinating dogs is the most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies in people. Dog vaccination will drive down not only deaths attributable to people but also the need for PEP as part of dog bite patient care.”

 Raccoons, bats, skunks, foxes, and coyotes are the reservoir animals that carry rabies. They can bite/scratch other mammals that then are infected and can turn around and infect others, such as cats and dogs.

  Transmission:

The most frequent way rabies is transmitted is though the saliva during a bite that punctures the skin. A scratch that breaks the skin can also be considered a potential threat as saliva could possibly have been on the claw. Transplants of infected organs or corneas are the only human-to-human documented cases. You cannot get rabies from petting an animal, being licked by an animal, drinking the animal’s milk, or coming in contact with its blood, urine or feces. Preparing or eating raw meat is high risk since you could be exposed to nervous bodily tissue. Just because you have been bitten or scratched by an animal doesn’t always mean that animal has rabies. But if the animal is wild or acting strangely, seek medical attention. Studies have shown that the disease has been found in animal’s saliva several days before the animal exhibits signs of infection. Dogs are often transmitters due to our closeness with them.

 Symptoms:

There is an incubation period for rabies that can vary greatly. Typically it is between 1 and 3 months, but it can be anywhere from 1 week to 1 year. There have even been cases where it was even years. There can be a fever and pain or tingling around the wound site. The virus will then travel through the nervous system where the fatal inflammation of the spinal cord and brain occur. There are two different forms of the disease that present next. Most often it is furious rabies. This form has hyperactivity, excitability, fear of water, and sometimes fear of flying. Death is days away once these symptom show. Paralytic rabies is the other form and occurs in 30% of human rabies cases. Here, the muscles become paralyzed around the wound site and then a coma follows. It is more drawn out before death occurs and is often misdiagnosed. There is no test to confirm clinical rabies before the fatal symptoms show. That is why thorough wound cleansing and PEP are so important after a bite that cannot be proven to not be a rabid animal.

 PEP

The rabies PEP is a dose of the human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and rabies vaccine given immediately. Then, the vaccine is given again routinely on days 3, 7, and 14. Even if treatment did not start immediately after exposure, this protocol is the same. If someone has already received a preexposure vaccine, then they would just receive the vaccine and not the HRIG

 People being treated with PEP are not contagious to others and can go about their daily routine. If the virus reaches the nervous system, a person would be contagious through saliva, nervous bodily tissue and possibly sexual contact. PEP is successful because it prevents the virus from reaching the nervous system.

 If a human is bitten, it is best to be able to observe the animal and have it tested if necessary.

In Ohio, if a domestic dog bites someone, the dog needs to be under observation for 10 days to make sure they do not exhibit signs of rabies. After that you may not have to have the PEP treatments. If you cannot observe the animal your doctor may want PEP treatments since dying is the only outcome. ???

 If your pet or livestock are unvaccinated and bitten by a wild mammal that couldn’t be caught, the CDC recommends euthanasia. If the owner chooses not to euthanize, it’s 6 months strict isolation and a vaccination 1 month before release. If your animal has an expired vaccination, they should be evaluated case by case. And if your animal has an up to date vaccination, it’s a 45-day observation.

 When an animal is tested for rabies, the test looks for rabies virus antigens in brain tissue. This means if an animal is suspected to have rabies, its head is removed and sent for testing to get the brain tissue.

 To prevent rabies in your pets the CDC says to:

“First, visit your veterinarian with your pet on a regular basis and keep rabies vaccinations up-to-date for all cats, ferrets, and dogs.

Second, maintain control of your pets by keeping cats and ferrets indoors and keeping dogs under direct supervision.

Third, spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets that may not be properly cared for or vaccinated regularly.

Finally, call animal control to remove all stray animals from your neighborhood since these animals may be unvaccinated or ill.”

 If a 100% fatal virus that causes terrifying neurological symptoms isn’t scary enough, an article from the New Mexico Department of Health on May 19, 2015 reported, “The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) announced today that a rabid fox from Lincoln County that bit a woman on April 20 had a strain of rabies that has never before been identified. The genetic sequencing of the virus was done in the Rabies Laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. The woman received a series of rabies vaccinations that has prevented her from developing rabies, which is usually fatal.” So while the treatment saved this woman, the virus can change.

 Rabies is truly a horrific disease. About 40,000 Americans go through the PEP treatment for it every year. (CDC) The decline in the number of human deaths in the U.S. from rabies since the 1970’s is directly contributed to “due to animal control and vaccination programs, modern rabies biologics following exposure, and successful outreach campaigns.” (CDC) This is a challenge in some other areas of the world since a successful campaign against rabies requires coordination of both animal and human health sectors. With perseverance and collaboration, we can continue to find a way to treat and reduce the prevalence of this virus.
