The recent trend where entire cults are formed around sharing just one bad opinion is so incredibly terrifying.

Echo chambers have always existed within social media but more than ever the people within them are actively recruiting others - if you go into any extremist tag you will see people openly bragging about successfully doing this.

But even outside of that we're feeling the effects of it, namely in the recent push to have to declare everything about yourself. You must state age, race, sexuality, gender, list your privileges and your alliances.

Complex, evolving, and nuanced issues are forced into binaries and you're encouraged to publicly make your stance. There's no time to learn and no room to change - you've written it in your bio. It may as well be engraved in stone.

We don't reward people for changing and learning and growing. It's even worse on platforms like tiktok where you've connected an opinion to your actual face forever.

And so you have to just keep digging in, even when information changes, even as the world changes.

And this is how it's happening, how these groups are forming - because isn't it safer and easier to just surround yourself with people who are all doing the same thing too? To find people to continually confirm your biases?

well - this is kind of what I mean about world building and things that I think should be taken into account when making these soulmate aus: if soulmates are a widely accepted and integral part of a society, then homophobia, or racism towards mixed race couples, or religious disapproval would surely be either absent or occur at a much much lower rate - because soulmates aren't something that you can control and so they kind of have to be accepted.

the only way that I can see those particular prejudices or societal pressures being justified by that society would be that if your soulmate is outside the heteronormative/racist/religiously linear expectation, then you are expected to have a platonic relationship with that person only. but those prejudices are following the societal pressures and expectations of our current world, one that hasn’t got the concept of soulmate integrated into its society, and so it has different power dynamics and widely accepted beliefs that one of a soul mate au.

to be honest, I think it’d be far more likely that there’d be taboos and prejudices regarding soulmates specifically - people not getting on with their soulmates and splitting up, people dating people who aren’t their soulmate, platonic soulmates deemed lesser than romantic soulmates etc.

I think its really worth remembering that these are alternate universes that occur in fiction. these stories are effectively fantasy. there are literally no limits. why, then, do we need to write discriminatory behaviours into these fantasies? we have so much of that in the real world, and these alternate universes can literally be anything we want them to be, so why not make them inclusive, loving, celebratory societies?? we don't have to inevitably create shitty societies built on oppression and violence. maybe in a world where youre meant to be guaranteed someone who you will have some kind of relationship with, it would be a more inclusive, accepting world.

Saeran is a cutiepie in this story. This is a GE Saeran situation where he's got his red hair and gold eyes, so you know he's going to be very sweet to you but also quite the tease. He's known to poke fun at you to make you smile, but he's always sincere about it. He noticed that you, the Reader, liked the Gardenias, so he knew that he needed to bring you some to make your room feel home-y. Count on him to do what's right.

I knew the plot twist was going to get my Readers! I'm chuckling about it, honestly. I've had some feedback from readers who didn't think this was coming but I always add little hints that you have to look out for. Saeran and Saeyoung definitely weren't ready for this, and they aren't ready for what's coming next... neither are Polaris or Gardenia for that matter. Watch out, Readers.

Polaris is a headstrong Reader. They've got an attitude. They believe in good and being lawful, but that doesn't mean they're not prepared to say what needs to be said. They believe in their convictions, and I am sure that many people can relate to that. You want your voice to be heard! But, God heard Polaris clearly today... they made a deal for this fact, but I hope you keep an eye out for where the bet will go. I can't say how the bet with God will go... even Polaris isn't sure where it's going.

I wonder if they'll tell Luciel about the deal.

I think the one thing about this fic that personally rings home to me is that it gives me an outlet for my religious trauma. I wasn't raised in a church or anything, they simply assumed that I would believe in the Christian God without having any context or understanding. So, I've had a really detached perspective from the start. I've got a lot of not-so-great experiences beyond that that I won't get into because of the violent homophobia that people spout.

But, I think what burns me at my core the most is when people say those things. You aren't "learning through suffering". You don't have to pull yourself up in the midst of the worst suffering you've ever had in your life because God just decided you needed to suffer to learn something. You are already strong. You've survived Hell and there's no karmic reason for it. Sometimes bad things happen, and it just fucking sucks, but God didn't cause that and you survived that by your hands. Be proud of yourself for holding your head up, and know that it's not because some God decided to make you suffer.

Trust me, I'm disabled and I've had many people tell me such tone-deaf comments thinking that they were being sympathetic to my condition through their faith. I don't appreciate someone telling me that I suffered because God decided that I had a lesson to learn or that this happened because God knew I could "handle it". I don't mind if someone offers to pray for me, but it's overstepping when you've got people making comments that burn your ass.

You don't suffer because some cosmic being made it happen. It just happens, and there's no reason why. Bad things happen to good people and to bad people, there's no pattern or reason. You'll notice this pattern through the story with Gardenia and Saeran, honestly. Gardenia is a human that still struggles with their health now and again, and Saeran is an angel with his own disabilities.

Your life is meaningful already.

You don't need to move mountains.

Be yourself. That's all you need.

Care to elaborate? I havent seen any of the stuff you complained about in my time just scrolling around the main tag..

Well, a lot of them you wont just see when scrolling around on Tumblr. When you get deep in the fandom you start noticing things, and some of these are exclusive to fanfiction websites.

1. Rudeness. Every fandom kind of has this issue, you're always going to have someone act rude. Thing is, I've noticed it more within the Starlight Express fandom, mainly when people disagree with each other.

2. Sexism (notice how all the focus is on the men). This isn't too noticable at first, but eventually I noticed that most of the focus and fangirling is directed towards the men (mainly Greaseball). Just look at the content in the Greaseball tag Vs the content in the Dinah tag.

3. Homophobia (mainly with shipping). Now this may be something that only I have experienced, but still. I have gotten angry comments on my fics saying that I "just want people to be gay". People jump up to ship Greasedinah or Prusty, often without acknowledging the issues within them, but immediately criticize Rustball when I fully agree that there are issues with it. A little funny how they will defend the Hetero ships but not the gay ones.

4. Shipping discourse. Again, many fandoms have this problem. Though I think it is especially bad within the Starlight Express fandom. Number 3 touched on it a little but homophobia isnt the only problem. The fandom in general seems to have problems when someone ships different than them.

5. People justifying abuse. This is more specific, but I've seen it. People try to justify Greaseball's abuse to Dinah by saying that he isnt smart and she isnt mature. People also try to justify Pearl's actions because shes new. None of which makes sense.

6. Nobody acknowledging that most chars are actually huge assholes. I dont think this one is that huge of a problem. I myself have done this, but I don't really get how people will idolize these chars when most of them are pretty nasty.

7. Infantilizing characters. Again, this is specific but still a problem. People will say Dinah is "too stupid" or "too immature" and that's why Greaseball abuses her and why shes so emotional. They will also straight up call Greaseball "dumb" and all of this is clearly a huge issue.

8. Way too many arguments over little stuff. This is another case where many fandoms have this issue. I have noticed it more and more that little disagreements turn into big issues because everyone is so defensive.

9. Making the whole fandom feel unwelcoming (especially towards minors). Okay, I feel uncomfortable elaborating on this one out in the open so if you really wanna know then pls dm me and I'll be happy to talk abt it.

i have an idea for a wuko fic but i’m terrible at finishing fics (moment of silence for the 4 unfinished anne with an e fics) aghhh

but basically, it’s a modern au and mako and bolin live with lin because i said so, that’s irrelevant but i feel like it’s a good thing to include. anyway. bolin joins theater (varrick is the theater teacher and somehow also a chemistry teacher, no one really knows how) so of course mako has to go to the shows. he sees wu there and is kinda like “oh he’s cute” but he also has internalized homophobia, of course.

after the play, mako has to go with bolin and the rest of the cast/crew to denny’s (of course, where else) because makos the one with the car. he’s utterly miserable and then wu (who he knows as cute guy that ISNT CUTE AT ALL WTF IM STRAIGHT) starts talking to him... and keeps talking to him... and doesn’t leave him alone. for 3 hours. now we’re gonna say that this is matured wu that isn’t shamelessly and terribly flirting with every girl ever in order to seem very very straight. but it’s still wu. so he’s very talkative when he’s nervous. and this really really cute boy (who’s kinda grumpy, but whatever.) is making him nervous.

later, mako and bolin go home, much to mako’s relief and bolin’s like “so it looked like you and wu hit it off” and mako’s like “what. no he just didn’t leave me alone” (which is technically true, but there’s also the small matter of mako actually engaging in conversation about an hour in)

and for the next few weeks, wu, who is apparently in mako’s math (which math, idk. geometry, algebra, calculus, same thing) and english classes, won’t leave him alone. and bolin, korra and asami have to listen to mako whine about him for like a month. eventually someone (probably korra) breaks and is just like “why don’t you just ask him to leave you alone???” and mako’s like “what. why would i do that?” and everyone just lets it go for the day, cause he’s hopeless.

at some point, mako realizes wu sits alone at lunch, and invites him to their table. korra and asami hate him at first because he flirted with them a lot freshmen year, but then he apologizes and all is well. one day mako’s home sick and they all realize that wu’s incessant talking goes down like... a lot when mako isn’t there. and somehow, wu lets slip that he gets really chatty around people he likes and so begins operation “get mako to realize he’s in love with wu.”

and then mako and wu get together and live happily ever after. the end.

if i were to write this i would post it on tumblr, because i don’t have an ao3 account (don’t ask, it’s a long story)

So I was thinking, about David x Patrick historical AUs, just your thoughts about this, but do you think that it's appropriate to write period typical homophobia in David x Patrick historic AUs or maybe even just leave it out (I think also depending on the context as well - cause e.g. Portrait of a Lady on Fire doesn't have outright homophobia even though at the time, they would have definitely been discriminated against, it's more or less implied in the film.) or kind of use it sub-textually? I feel like this is more of an issue in terms of Patrick x David as they were created in a way for the purpose that you there is a possibility of a world where there is no homophobia (or not a lot of it anyway), and therefore it would be kind of ironic or retconning/contradicting the purpose of the show?

hello i am very slow at answering asks, if i ever answer them at all, so i hope this answer isnt totally irrelevant to where you are now with your life + choices!! i think this is hugely a thing of personal preference - ive considered writing some period pieces (if i ever write again, there are some on my list) for david and patrick, and id lean towards not including period-typical homophobia, just because i want them to be happy and safe and i do tend to follow in dan's tradition of writing the world we want to see.... but a lot of fans and fic readers also appreciate the inclusion of real-world stuff, even the challenging stuff. it can help people process things theyve experienced or challenging elements of the world, through the context of fic. so i would say you should write what the story calls for, what feels appropriate to you, keeping in mind that some people might steer clear of a story that has period-typical homophobia in it. and thats okay! its okay for you to write it or not write it. its okay for people to read it or not read it.

A knock sounded at Roman’s door, twice, Dmitri stiffening beneath him.

She said something again in Spanish, tone teasing and Roman’s eyes shot wide.

“Mom!” he whined, still not bothering to move, “Yes, I’m going with Dee. No, you do not, absolutely do not, need to send Virgil with us, I’m an angel.” 

Dmitri couldn’t contain his snort and Roman shot him a warning look. 

“Okay, love, but I want to celebrate you as well, okay?” 

“Okay,oky--” Roman said, waiting for her footsteps to go away, before redirecting his attention to Dmitri, “She must have gotten off her shift early.” He explained, apologetic. 

“It’s fine, she’s coming to the exhibition tonight, right?” Dmitri asked, finally relaxing. 

“Mhm, she’d never miss it,” Roman said, “Or at least she tries, work always has her on call...”

Can it wait ‘til tomorrow?” He relaxed,  “Thank you--”  His lips pressed into a thin line before he slumped over the steering wheel. 

After a minute or so, he inhaled, sitting up and muting his phone before looking over at Roman, expression calm. 

“You ready?” Roman asked.

I saw an absolute train wreck of a post that made me need to say something

an author of a fic is NOT indebted to random readers to censor their content that may be triggering to some people, and if a reader gets triggered by content that is CLEARLY marked and tagged as including that content, it is not the author's fault. ffs even if it ISNT clearly marked it still isn't the author's fault that their work triggered you. it's asinine to expect the entire internet to conform to your personal needs. if you are triggered by something it's on you to keep yourself safe from it by whatever means are necessary.

for example, in korea, many people wear masks in public because their immune systems are compromised since their air has a very large concentration of fine dust particles. even if the air in a particular place is clean, they still wear the mask just in case. [i obtained this info from watching a korean political drama series, it may be mildly incorrect but if it is let's just say that it's a hypothetical scenario]. wearing that mask is the equivalent of, say, only reading fics that have been prescreened by someone else who is trustworthy as not containing that content which triggers you.

I have a certain trigger myself and a friend of mine was telling me about his story that has that specific thing in it. is it his fault? no. did he mean to on purpose? no. did it affect me? yes. did I blame him? no. sometimes, shit happens.

if you're an author would it be nice to have a content warning beforehand? yeah, definitely. but do you HAVE to do it in order to contribute art to the world? no. it's not a mandate, nor should it be, as that qualifies as censorship and censorship is bad.

However

when it comes to things like graphically depicted rape scenes, or violent instances of racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia, or other related forms of severe discrimination... that shit's inherently harmful. and I don't mean like, writing stories that have to do with rape or prejudice. every topic can be discussed if the proper care and attention is made. but if it's not done properly, that's bad. if you, say, include a detailed lynching scene of a black man just for the shock of it [and I don't mean like in boardwalk empire season 1 when chalky lights a cigarette and looks up to see the dead guy and just glares for a second before he goes to try to do something about the racist violence in Atlantic City, or like in oh brother where art thou where john goodman and the kkk tries to kill tommy, I mean like if it ended up being the kind of tasteless fuckin saw 8 level torture porn that white supremacists would beat off to], or like if the torture scenes in hostel and outlast were done not to just some random american but specifically by nazis or something to jews, then yeah that's a fucking problem. and graphic rape scenes bordering on porn are just... always tasteless for obvious reasons. and they shouldn't be made or even acknowledged. and of course inherently weird bad shit like boku no pico and other pedophilic media is covered by that too.

but if you're covering things like abuse, sexual assault, drugs, usage of slurs, and stuff like that, you aren't obligated to indicate that it'll be present or else writing it should be illegal, even though that's triggering to a lot of people. it would be a nice gesture but ultimately you're not responsible for the pain and suffering from someone else who happens to get triggered by your work. I mean come on, food network isn't responsible for triggering people recovering from eating disorders who turn on the channel. investigation discovery isn't responsible for triggering people who are triggered by murder and discussions of rape and sexual assault. content creators are not responsible for that. holding them responsible for it is pointless and dare I say childish? saw 6, rule of rose, pirates of the caribbean: dead man's chest, o brother where art thou, doki doki literature club, pixar's coco, exodus: gods and kings, how I met your mother, swordfish, the devil's arithmetic, and rammstein's music video for deutschland, all of these things have triggered me without any warning whatsoever, but it wasn't any of those things' creators' faults, nor was it mine. it's just a shitty thing that happened.

so don't get pissed off at a random fanfic writer and fucking doxx them because they wrote a kinky bdsm sex scene that triggered you, and then don't go all "ok i guess I'm a bad person I guess I'll just kill myself :) cool cool cool cool" just because someone called you out on your bullshit. because that's super hypocritical and could trigger people with hyperampathy issues and suicidal ideation. you goddamn idiot baby.

BC IM STILL MAD ABOUT IT Hok like so,,,,twitter about 8 months ago???? actually maybe 9-10 months ago...it was whenever i was in the middle of writing my fake marriage fic, we got alongish??? like she commented on my fics and stuffwell obviously one of the things in my fic is homophobia, and in the fic it was mentioned along the lines that lgbt stuff isnt..u know, like the same it is in the U.S? im not saying the U.S is gay paradise--far from it--but the U.S recognizes gay ppl and shit like that and japan doesn't. theyre not as open about that stuff. thats a fact. anyways she took issue w that and i was like ok ok cool cool its a difference of opinion i guessthen another issue with an author popped up where they headcanoned mic as half-american, and she took issue with that and said smth like, ppl who are half-white are "whitewashed" versions of their other ethnicity, and i, as a half-white half-mexican kid, took issue with THAT, but it ended kind of peacefully u know. we kinda just stopped talking to each other. didn't interact.and then weeks or months later i dont remember, she started a thread about plagiarism. keep in mind this was when there were, say, 300 fics in the erasermic tag, and she wrote a good portion of them. she said something along the lines that obviously, since she is so big and so very popular, lots of people have unconciously copied her works, since she is the erasermic god and fics with even remotely the same headcanon as hers are Obviously Plagiarizing. she posted a screenshot straight from my fic and was like "see this author was obviously influenced by me and unknowingly plagiarized me right here"look. thats an understandable Author Worry(tm) if someone is actually copying u. but here's the thing. the lines kuri compared werent even similar. the only thing they had in common was the same headcanon, the same idea. u want to know the very rare, uncommon headcanon that was patented by kuri and can only be used by her? that mic is more affectionate than aizawa. sorry guys. everyone who has that headcanon has been plagiarizing her :(ANYWAYS when that happened ppl got mad. my friends, and the folks in the Discord(tm). but i...never really got to be mad about it, i feel. it feels like my friend deandre had all the anger, and he and dave both went off on her, and yeah i was the one who initially brought it up but i never got to be angry about it the same way everyone else did. i had -10 followers and she had 500 and i felt like if i actually got upset about it all 500 would come after me.so ive always been kind of upset about it but then she was brought up again today and it ignited the Rage(tm) and recently i havent been caring about reeling my anger in when people are being shit. im being Angry now. anger is fueling me today. it is the cause behind my actions. i won one(1) game of dodgeball today. it was great.now all that aside, if any one of u--any 11,800 of u--goes after her im blocking the SHIT out of u lmao. dont Do That. this is just me venting.

hmm I´ve been in the Hannibal fandom for almost 2 years now. 

I don’t know how long I was in the Sherlock fandom maybe about 2 or 3 years? But I wasnt really active there, only reblogged things and read fanfic. I had this extreme Doctor Who and Torchwood phase at some point but it didn´t last very long, maybe a year.

So I guess its Hannibal with 2 years and counting.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

From Hannibal it´s definitely Will, I totally agree with you there.

BUT I also like the character arc of Zuko from Avatar the last airbender. Because he went from villain who hunted the main character to important ally and friend who helped the main character defeat the actual villain (his own father). And the best thing it´s completely believable cause his thought process and his moments of doubt, his struggles and the moments where he falls back into his old ways are portrayed really well.

N - Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

I´d love to see more trans (or genderfluid) Will Graham… there´s isnt nearly enough.

For Hannibal the first song that came to my mind was The Devil Within by Digital Daggers which is totally hannigram season one. I actually made a moodboard for that once. Looking back on it, I don´t think its that good but well whatever.

Oh boy… um how about an AU where Hannibal wakes up one day and finds himself in his 11 year old body. And he has to deal with everything like that and he can´t go about murdering anymore cause he´s smol and he can´t bone Will so he rants about his frustration to Bedelia and she decides that like always she´s too sober for his shit.

and for the past couple months ive been thinking on twitter threads about ppl who were Gay Teens Coming Out years and years ago who went to see the film w a parent or other sort of relation and it prompted a discussion where the parent is like. when you came out, was it bad? was i very bad about it? and they said how the answer was well, kinda, yeah. and getting to have this whole talk about a decade or so after the fact, because the movie shows such earnest support, and the recognition of the failing of anything less than the fullest kind of support.

like honestly i liked a lot that like, the issue wasn’t that simon was particularly worried about rejection, or some terrible kind of abuse or violence like gay kids who had to keep it a secret because their parents might even have pulled shit like kicking out a gay kid, like implying they’d even kill them if they’re gay. and he wasn’t exactly worried about like, hate crimes or anything either. because its not like the Awful kind of homophobic reaction isnt a concern anymore, but it isnt to everyone, and it wasnt always to everyone. its not even accurate to say that noncishet people prior to like the late 20th century always were rejected, always were closeted, always were miserable. there’s all kinds of stories and it’s nice to hear all kinds of them. like, the Gay Tragedy was as we know the only way to get a gay story of any kind past the rigid catholic moral guide for Film back in the day, and not so shocking that thats the kind of gay story that tends to be most palatable to the heterosexuals. and they have, what, like atonement and shit or something? and yet also i’m not saying that tragic gay stories should be off limits, or dramas, or anything. just that of course movies are limited to Bury Your Gays, Kill The Trans Kid, Show The Tragedy Of Not Being Cishet Coz That’s What’s Gritty And Real And I’m Okay With Them If They Die. we deserve every genre and plot structure. it would improve all of them.

anyhow like i was sort of getting to. i really appreciate how simon like, isn’t ashamed of being gay, isn’t in denial about it, isn’t afraid of his parents or friends or community finding out, doesnt feel particularly endangered re the idea, but still feels like he can’t. i really liked the bit where he upsets his sister cuz he’s so fuckin stressed about having just been outed and his privacy invaded in front of his whole damn school but he’s like super conflicted about like, why would i be upset at being out, why would i be ashamed just because i didnt come out before, etc etc. and i liked that he felt his coming out to his parents went badly just b/c it was a bit awkward. because the small issues are just as big a deal, people wanna act like the defining part of being gay is a certain level of agony. and so you get ppl questioning if love, simon is “necessary,” like a gay protag has to be justified for the technical benefits it might afford, like if its not about suicide or self loathing or ostracization or violence or being disowned or etc etc, its not REALLY about being gay, and it can’t possibly help gay kids because its just unrealistic. because even if you have worse problems, seeing an overall happy gay love story where he gets the guy and has all the support of family and friends and community put out there will just be meaningless to you. and obviously its just as pointless to argue that this is the be all and end all of gay films, like we only needing ONE gay romcomdrom type film, we only need ONE gay y.a. movie, this is THE gay film for those categories now people, it’s over. like jesus we’re owed so many. give us the nondystopian y.a. movies back, and make em gay!!! GAY

anyways what is the point? i like that it was shown its difficult to come out even if you only expect “small” bad issues, because even having to have the smallest fear that the people in your life will think less of you, or love you less, or see you as any bit of a disappointment or flawed, is really fucked up and difficult. like i said, it was way too real when simon was just a bit uncomfortable when his dad made just a bit uncomfortable gay jokes. i like that he felt fucked up over being outed even though he wasn’t necessarily ashamed of being gay. and i mean i know part of it was that he was afraid that the other guy was gonna get scared off since that was being exposed too, but i liked that element also, because of the tension between the joy of getting to like...Be Gay with a guy you like and enjoy it, but also know that the whole thing is tenuous and uncertain and you’re both a bit afraid and the whole thing might crumble at any moment because it’s not easy to take “privately being gay” into it being everyones business and public knowledge. because even the little shit you have to deal with is a concern, and even in the most “it’s probably totally okay” situations, you don’t KNOW that its okay, because homophobia is still the default even amongst like. the libs who think they’re totally not homophobic.

and plus yknow the whole thinking you’ll be treated different thing. like coming out is going to HAVE to be some Big Deal and you’ll have to be imposing something on everyone who knows you when really you’re just being the fuck yourself. and the idea that suddenly everyone’s gonna be uncomfortable with you or think you’re someone else or just look at you different because they were cool with you when they thought you were straight. and anyways

also i seriously forget the dude’s real name but i love that it was the first guy simon thought might be blue. damn i know they said it like fifty times in that one scene lol...but anyways yknow i’m like “hmm walking in on him maybe messing around with a girl could just be Gay Crisis shit yknow” and it was and thats kinda fun lol. like, i’ve read some fics in my day!! that is not a nail in the coffin!!

anyways what i want to say is getting a sweet triumphant gay kiss scene is just. so fucking beautiful for the soul. i’m fuckin reveling in it. now that ive been writing about it for half an hour i should go ahead and try to get my rewatch in, right. yeah

About the homophobia in the fandom, I get it, but I watched the show before I got into the fandom, and when I watched the show, I started out shipping the lovesquare, because that was what the show centered around. I honestly enjoy the fandom, and don't give a shit if other people ship outside the love square. They're fictional characters, do what you want with them. Just understand I don't personally ship ships outside the love square, and that's fine because 1/? (Call me blue anon idk)

2/ particularly enjoy ships outside the love square. (except rose and juleka) I don't have to reblog content that I don't ship. I understand that someone put time and effort into that work, and I can appreciate that, but I am not obligated to support them. I am happy that they are contributing to the fandom, but I'm not exactly dying to read more. The show and many of its followers came for the love square, so you can't really get upset when that's the biggest ship. I'm happy that

3/ you can find enjoyment and identify with the characters, but just like we shouldn't shove the love square on you, you shouldn't shove other ships on us. It's okay to ship different things and see things differently, but you can't get angry when the ships outside the main ship get less attention, because that's what the majority came here for. You are looking for homophobia where there it isnt. No one is obligated to promote work they aren't interested in. I don't have to ship everything youdo

i do ship the love square! i love the love square! i dont reblog ships im not invested in, and im not saying anyone else has to either. while id appreciate it if people uplifted works with lgbt+ characters, i cant force anyone to or to make them ship something theyre not interested in 

im not mad that non love square ships get less attention. is it annoying? kind of, but thats what you deal with when you ship a rarepair. thats not where im seeing the homophobia, even if there may be internal homophobia effecting some of those things 

im seeing the homophobia in the pride zine getting a death threat, in the comments me and other content creators get when characters arent cishet or the ship isnt a straight ship. to reference something i experienced, when i casually said in wanna chat that adrien was trans, i got a lot of shit for it, but i also got people who just didnt understand why he “had to be trans”. i got a lot of people being transphobic when they didnt realize it, who didnt really have malicious intent, but still said hurtful things 

now transphobia and homophobia are different, but it really isnt just a ship thing. as my friend erin said, she has a fic where the love square is the ship, but people got upset when she said that marinette was bi 

no one is obligated to ship something they arent interested in and they arent required to ship something they dont like. but i think we all should take a look at how we react to lgbt+ headcanons and gay ships, and also question why we think they may be improbable

So I just finished s01 of Shadowhunters and I have some thinky thoughts about it. I’m putting it under the cut because it’s not all positive (well, most of it isnt really) and if you are a die-hard malec shipper, you should probably skip this.

Overall, I think my opinion so far can be summed up as this show has a lot of potential to be really good and interesting and nobody seems to want to do anything about it. I mean the set up is great - demons threatening the world? Awesome. A secret society of warriors whose purpose is to protect the world? Nice. Magic? Warlocks? AU worlds? Perfect. Class issues between the races? Homophobia? Relevant and important concepts to tackle. So in theory everything is great. But in practice? Not so much.

I think the two main issues this season has are 1) thngs happening way too fast and not enough time and focus given to certain topics and characters in order to understand their motivations and the worldbuilding of this universe and 2) the problem with show, dont tell - that is to say we keep being told things but almost never shown anything to actually back up these claims.

Now I know there are time limits and you cant fit everything into a single episode or even a single season and you shouldnt have to. I’m not saying they should have crammed everything into 13 episodes. That is not the issue. The problem is that when topics that should be given due focus and time within the specific episode arent, things get confusing. For example, why did Alec decide to marry Lydia? We find out in the next episode that he’s decided to restore the family honor on his own terms after finding out about his parents’ past. Which is great. We have Alec’s motivation. But in the episode itself where he proposed everything was set up for him to follow his heart. That was the theme of the episode and Alec through the entire thing kept agreeing with Magnus and whoever else was telling him to do what he wants. Only for him to turn around simingly out of nowhere in the literal last minute of the episode and decide to get married. Dont get me wrong, I dont have a problem with him NOT choosing to follow his heart given the situation but there wasnt enough focus on his struggle between the two during the episode in order to make his last-minute turn seem less weird. And that doesnt even cover Lydia’s side of thngs. Why did she decide to get married to a literal stranger after meeting him like yesterday? And this is not an exxageration - Alec proposes literally 2 or 3 days max after Lydia shows up. Is she that desperate to run an institute? Wouldnt she be allowed to have the position if she’s not married? Why does it even matter - doesnt it make more sense to give her the position based on her skills and results on the job? We dont know. But these are the sort of worldbuilding questions you might want to answer.

This is just one example of how things are going way too fast and there’s not enough time given to explain the characters and universe properly. There are more but if I keep going, we’ll be here tomorrow too. I’m not even gonna bother to cover all the scenes that just flat out do not make sense cause then we’ll never leave.

The other thing bothers me even more - there are sooo many things we are TOLD but never really SHOWN - Alec has been in love with Jace for I dont know how many years, Alec is repressed, the SH society is homophobic (admittedly we are not told this in canon, I dont believe? but that is at least the implication made), Magnus is in love with Alec and Alec feels the same, Magnus is a centuries-old warlock, one of the most powerful people in the world, Ragnor is even more powerful, etc etc. But. Where is the evidence? If Alec has spent so long being in love with Jace and repressed, wouldnt it have been more difficult for Magnus to get him to agree to a date than one half-assed phone call? Wouldnt Alec be struggling even more with accepting that Magnus is interested and panicking about what to do, denying everything with all his might? Shouldnt there be more struggle here?

So far I havent seen any signs of anyone in the Institute being homophobic. Maybe that changes in s02 but so far? Nope. Even Alec’s parents whom fandom for some reason has decided to demonize as some kind of terrible scumbags are not homophobic and actually hella decent people all things considered. Lydia is not homophobic. The goddamn Silent Brother seemed more interested in the kissing scene than anything else.

Warlocks are supposed to be hella powerful yet Magnus needed Alec’s help to fight off ONE circle member and Ragnor got killed by a TINY demon thingy that even Clary can handle. We were told Magnus cares so much about that necklace he’d risk his life to get it back yet 5mins later just casually gives it away to Izzy and doesnt mention it again. 

Clary and co LOVE to make these passionate speeches about how they’re the new generation of shadowhunters who respect the downworlders and believe everyone is their equal and the Clave is wrong - yet the moment a downworlder refuses to help them, they have no problem blackmailing, focing, lying and going behind their back to get what they want. And this is admittedly not a bad thing to show that these people despite their good intentions cant just change over night, if the narrative at least acknowledged their hypocrisy as a sign they need to grow some more but it doesnt.

Again, I an keep going but I wont. And finally there’s Malec. By all accounts I think this is the thng that disaapointed me the most. It could have been so awesome if developed properly! Like again we have a great set up - two people from opposite sides of the war, leaders to their respective groups, meeting and falling in love against all odds - it’s basically every enemies to friends to lovers fic ever and it’s AWESOME. Except not really because the way they play it in canon is just what even? So they meet and Magnus is obviously sexually attracted to Alec and wants to pursue that. Cool. Alec is... feeling whatever it is he’s feeling, I honestly cant even tell if he was interested from the start or just happy someone was paying attention to him. I suppose that stuttering scene when Magnus introduces himself is supposed to show he’s interested. Or something. Then Magnus calls to ask him on a date which yay, makes sense with how eager he was when they met. And then Alec agrees. And this is where things start going wonky for me.  Why does he agree so easily? Isnt he supposed to be in love with Jace? Isnt he supposed to be terrified of anyone finding out he’s gay? Next scene after they heal Luke, Magnus goes you’ve unlocked something in me and I go was it your dick? Because this line for all its romantic vibe and whatnot in the context we’ve been presented so far makes no sense. Because now the show wants me to believe that Magnus fell in love at first sight. Except this is not how they played it - what I saw was Magnus being really fricking horny. I did not see any grand revelations of omg, I just fell in love for the first time in over a century with this hot piece of shadowhunting ass I just met. Now I’m supposed to believe Malec has had enough development and enough scenes together to warrant such a strong emotional reaction from Magnus two episode after meeting Alec and after like 2? 3? scenes interacting with him. Insert the sure jan gif here.

Fast forward to the wedding - awesome scene really. Kiss and all (such a hot kiss and I ask why arent they kissing like that in s02 instead of these we’ve been married for 50years and cant wait for one of us to die already pecks?). But again, it only works if you ignore the context and take it as a stand alone scene. Because otherwise the emotional depth that it’s supposed to have? Goes out the window to stand besides all the emotional and mental development that was needed between them in order to make the scene really work and resonate on a deep level. And dont even get me started on how wrong Magnus acted at the beginning of the episode.

I can buy - at a push, a big big BIG push - that Magnus fell in love from the start but I absolutely do not believe Alec did as well. Honestly, I dont believe he loves Magnus even now in s02 (I havent watched it yet but I have enough context about some of their key scenes to say this, there is no way I man in love would tell his boyfriend not to take a treath to his life PERSONALLY, amongst other things). And that is just sad. Because this could have been a great love story, all the fire and passion and fireworkd like we keep getting told there is but what we see is something different.
