Your thoughts on the side characters relationships in 2ha ? Esp: Xu shuanglin & Luo fenghua
AND xue yang and song lan and xiao xingchen in mdzs?
OMG, I love this ask!!!
I find XSL x LFH a dark mirror to Mo Ran x CWN - yes the latter can get horrifyingly dark in 0.5 story line but we know 0.5 TXJ was not Mo Ran's true self and it all ends happily with a cabin in the woods, a dog, Mo Ran and CWN living in blessed peace and a forest of trees that are princes and princesses to Taxian Jun.
There is no such out and no such peace for LFH x XSL. The ending is horrific, especially for LFH, who did nothing wrong ever and who ends up not having even hope of reincarnation - his soul scattered, utterly gone from the world. Even his innocent sister ends up scattered the same way as part of XSL's plan (without XSL knowing who she is, and ironically as part of the plan to bring LFH back.)
@momoliee has a great post where she makes an amazing point that Meatbun's lastest main pairing (in CFC) is paralleled by 2ha but not really by Mo Ran x CWN but XSL x LFH and I think this is a great point. And it's all rather hopeless because of it, to me.
To get back to the ask - the set up also lacks the romance underpinning. We never get any hint that LFH was anything but a teacher to the Nangong family. We never get any hint that he felt any romantic love for XSL. Honestly, we don't even get the feeling that XSL wanted to bang his shizun. I am not saying that romantic obsession is not a valid interpretation - it may very well be - it's just it's never indicated that it is one way or another in the text. XSL may have been romantically obsessed with his shizun. OR he may very well have been so lonely, so starved for caring, that he viewed him as only person who demonstrated kindness and so became obsessed without wanting to bang him, we don't know.
What we do know is that this obsession is deeply destructive and deeply selfish. He does not need the flower to make awful choices. He lies to his brother and LFH's corpse is kept from reincarnating. When he realizes he can't get what he wants, he rather scatter the soul, destroying that person he supposedly cared for, then have LFH reincarnate and have a life elsewhere. Taxian Jun, even at his maddest, never kept Chu Wanning from reincarnating. Taxian Jun used puppets to win battles - he never turned people he either loved or hated or had some other connections with into puppets so they'd be a human diorama to act out his fantasies the way XSL did. He kept CWN's corpse preserved but he never turned him into a puppet. It does not look like it even occurred to him. XSL in the same situation would not have hesitated for a second.
To me, XSL like Hua Binan, though on a lesser scale, is an example of "if you treat people horribly, they may become monsters and you'd have unleashed it on yourself." My sympathy for him is limited - by the time he's wiping out towns and people by scads, more than half-mad, any initial compassion on my part has dissipated.
As to LFH, I feel terrible for him. Just as XQC in CFC as @momoliee pointed out, his only sin was to show care to a brilliant, unloved boy. And his whole life got destroyed to such an extent I cannot even describe.
Speaking of unhealthy relationships and dark mirrors to the mains, this is what I think of Xue Yang and Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen in MDZS - YIKES! I have noticed that XY x XXC is a popular fandom ship and I totally get why but to me they are a huge and utter NOTP for the same reason I don't care for XQC x LFH in terms of rooting for them (or the same reason the main ship of CFC is currently giving me the creeps; actually they could be a good parallel to this also) - a good person and a psycho obsessed with them because the good person showed kindness, but still unable not to destroy everything because he is a psycho and because he needs to hurt and/or control (or in his mind, "get even") is not a dynamic I find appealing, though I get why people do (the potential for drama!) XY takes XXC apart to such a degree the latter literally scatters his soul because he's in such pain he doesn't even want to contemplate reincarnation. XY is more fixated on XXC than anyone in his life, and cares for him insofar as he's able to care for anyone and yet the horrors he inflicts are so bad XXC self-destructs and that says everything.
I do ship SL x XXC because friends-fellow fighters for good who have tragedy heaped on them is my jam. The novel unlike the drama leaves some hope for XXc's soul so I choose to run with it. I think they are the darker mirror to WWX x LWJ not in their dynamics being darker - they are not as they are good guys - but in miscommunications and missed timing and a string of coincidences leading to all this horror, something the main OTP actually avoids, thank God.
ETA: thanks @cuentaprovisional for pointing out I flipped SL and XXC names. For some reason I always do that. Fixed now.

What would you say to the pairing of Jiang Cheng/Xue Yang?
I mean my instinctive reaction is fuck Xue Yang, but you know what?
That pairing could be interesting, in like, a horrible kind of way.
Dunno about the logistics of it, maybe XY imprinted on JC (in CQL at least) instead of Xiao Xingchen (good! let the man be happy! and alive!) and decided to focus on him instead? Maybe he goes ‘damn I appreciate that grumpy bitch in purple’ when he’s getting fondled by WWX. Or maybe he’s somehow less of a little bastard murder gremlin, because I find it hard to believe JC would be cool with the whole ‘murdered an entire clan’ thing.
....*glances at the Wens*
actually you know what maybe not
IN ANY EVENT I think what would be the most interesting thing to me is that XY’s brain is Very Focused On Certain Things to the point of obsession, and for Jiang Cheng, who is never first choice for anyone, would be absolutely Unable To Process that kind of devotion.
Like his dad preferred WWX over him, WWX went with the Wen over him (and then later LWJ), JYL went with JZX over him, and while the second two are valid in their life choices it does make a guy get a complex. You can argue that his mom put him first but she damn well showed it poorly.
Anyway so this affection-starved boy (I’m thinking post-Qiongqi, pre-Everything Else That Is Horrible) suddenly has the absolute focus of Xue Yang. Like I love all JC pairings but there are always things that you could argue that his partners would put over him, particularly their own Sects/siblings if you go with my usual pairings. And I don’t think he’d fault them for it, he’d do the same, but to have someone devoted to you to you above all else is not something he’s used to.
Like, the little murder bastard would absolutely salt and burn the earth for JC, he would do it without a second thought and probably enjoy it, too, and feel entirely justified about it. His love/affection/obsession presents in terrifying overprotectiveness (see: stabbing a potato) and, well, it’s other people’s own fucking faults if they dared look at JC funny.
There are probably a lot of mysterious deaths post-discussion conferences.
JC would soak up the joy of finally being first to someone and thus be willfully blind to a lot of things, XY would have an outlet for his obsessiveness and finally have someone who needs him, and it would be super unhealthy and fucked up and the sex would be kinky as fuck.

1. you've read the novel, right? what are your thoughts on xueyang, compared to the show? if you don't mind sharing, of course. i'm curious because i watched the untamed and i was like ''oh, xueyang... interes-ting'', but then i started reading the novel on wattpad and everyone was like ''ugh, i hate this guy. he's disgusting. he's a piece of trash. suddenly i can't read'' very strongly and i was a bit surprised by the strong rejection O: +
2.  this isn't the only reason, probably, but i guess the show can pass a slightly different perception of him, because i honestly liked him as a character from the beginning hajshaajas
I know, right - the book fans really hate Xue Yang, like with passion!
The thing is, maybe because I watched the show before I read the book, I kind of felt for Xue Yang (it really doesn’t hurt that Wang Hao Xuan is so very easy on the eyes - cheekbones, man). But it’s also true that book-XY is a very different animal. I think whoever wrote the screenplay either saw something that book fans didn’t or saw the underlying intention behind XY - MXTX has said that Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System is basically XY’s story, but I haven’t read it so I can’t really say.
I mean, I’ve practiced selective reading on the book (look, it’s LONG. Also, the Yi city arc is so tragic it’s painful) so I can’t really say whether we even get Xue Yang’s flashback on the point of death, which goes far in garnering sympathy for the character.
Also, the book is primarily from Wei Wuxian’s POV, so we don’t see much beyond that, while The Untamed gives so much more.
For example, when do we first meet Xue Yang? It’s literally during the episode when our boys start college, start listening to a lecture at Cloud Recesses. And he’s exactly their age, if not a little younger. So while they’re having drunken hijinks with their buddies, he’s being choked by the current dark lord amid the fires of Mount Doom, I mean Buyetian.
And it’s like - he chose all that - but did he really? The entirety of XY’s backstory is Wei Wuxian without the kindly uncle who saves him from the streets.
To be honest, a lot of my sympathy for the character comes from a line by Jin Guangyao in the GuanYin temple scenes. Re. what Xue Yang thought he was doing with the Yin Iron? “He wanted to save Xiao Xingchen.”
Yes, it’s obsessive and wrong and he caused all this. But still. He wanted to save Xiao Xingchen. It’s one of those ‘the moment my heart broke’ scenes. And then there’s the fact that he kept Xiao Xingchen’s body uncorrupted for ten years. Again, I get it. Obsessive, unhealthy, yada yada.
All of this could be in the novel, but I do think the screenplay and the actor added a lot. I’m also planning a fic but shhhhhhhhhhhh
Also, have I pointed out that he’s the master of some magnificent eyerolls? Anyone who rolls their eyes at Wen Chao like this gains points in my book
