Airbnb gives you the option to set your price maximum with a line graph.

4. Check the location

Many times when you start playing with prices and getting pickier with your Airbnb rental Airbnb’s website will automatically widen your location search. So, pay special attention to the map and location details of the places you are looking at so your rental is exactly where you want it.

5. Turn off Instant Book

Airbnb has implemented a super annoying feature called “Instant book.” Meaning when selected you are only seeing places that you can instantly book greatly limiting your search results. Airbnb’s interface automatically switches this on for you so make sure to turn it off.

6. Decide if you’re okay with a cleaning fee

Many Airbnb hosts add a cleaning fee to their rental. I’ve seen cleaning fees range anywhere from $5 to $85 per stay. To me paying a $50 fee for a one to two night Airbnb rental is not okay, so I will disregard a property when I see this. Longer stays are easier to justify a cleaning fee, and it all depends on the total price a night.

Cameron and I have managed to receive glowing guest reviews over the years as we leave Airbnb’s clean when we leave. This actually has given us a bit of negotiating power and we sometimes ask hosts to knock off the cleaning fee if we promise to leave it the same way we found it. However, as a newbie Airbnb user, this may not be possible.

No matter if you are paying a cleaning fee or not you should still keep your place like you would want your home to be kept. These are private homes and apartments so treat them with respect.

7. Make sure there are reviews

The number one thing I look for when choosing an Airbnb is reviews and a plethora of them. Generally, we try to book Airbnb’s with at least 10 or more reviews, but even that is on the low end.

We have only booked one place before with no reviews before and it was a total gamble that turned out to be fantastic. The good thing is when a property is new and doesn’t have any reviews the host may lower the price for the first couple of guests. Everyone has to start somewhere!

8. Read the reviews

Now that you’ve found a place with a lot of reviews you need to actually read the reviews. Make sure they are positive and that good things are being said about both the host and the actual property. The longer we are staying at a place the more in-depth I will analyze.

The bad thing I’ve found about Airbnb is that the review system is a little manipulative. With Airbnb, you often have face to face interactions with the owner – which is great – but it means that people are less likely to leave bad reviews and notes when they should be made. It’s hard to meet a friendly person and then complain about things that should be noted.

Also, Airbnb gives the host the option to review guests it means that guests are less likely to complain when they feel they should. When you are reviewing a Marriott or Hyatt you are more likely to go into detail about complaints and negative experiences, since the receiving end isn’t an individual. Just keep that in mind when you’re looking at reviews.

9. Look for a Superhost

If you are super wary of booking an Airbnb then consider switching on the “Superhost” function when searching. Superhosts have to maintain a high response rating, be an active user, glowing reviews, and never cancel on guests. Super hosts generally charge more for their status but you get what you pay for.

10. Read the description properly

Read the description of the place you are considering. I always make sure there is internet as that is important to Cameron and me, but the description can tell you many other things. Also, pay attention to the check in and check out times since you’re arriving at a real person’s place. So checking at 2 am after a long flight may not really work for Airbnb and you should opt for a hotel that is open 24 hours.

11. Check the cancellation policy

If you think there is any chance your trip could fall through try to book a place with a flexible cancellation policy. Many hosts have a non-refundable cancellation policy and if you book one of these and have to cancel Airbnb will not be on your side when it comes to a refund.

12. Message the host before you book

I never, ever instant book a place. That’s because I like to message the host and tell them about us, why we are traveling there, and any details about the trip. This is my test to make sure the host is responsive and personable. It also helps answer any important questions regarding our trip.

13. Request a discount

If you are staying for a week or longer you may be in the position to contact the host and ask for a discount on the price. They don’t have to say yes, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Good past reviews don’t hurt your chances of getting a discount either. We often request special rates from hosts – especially in the shoulder or off seasons. If it’s mid-summer and you’re booking a place at the beach you probably won’t be able to score a discount.

14. Consider the fees

It’s worth noting that Airbnb charges guests a whopping 12% “Service Fee” on top of the rental price for using their service. This is in addition to the 3% they are charging the host. The fee is unavoidable if you are booking through their platform.

Of course, you can message the host and try to take things into your own hands, but you’ll realize as soon as you try this that Airbnb’s platform blocks out all emails, social handles, and phone numbers to prevent this. It’s also worth noting that if you do take things off of Airbnb to reduce the fees you lose any right to contact Airbnb if there is a problem – this goes for both the guest and the host.

15. Call Airbnb as soon as there is a problem

If you realize there is a problem once you check in to your new place don’t hesitate to tell your host first. If the host doesn’t resolve it quickly then don’t wait to contact Airbnb. You have 24 hours to notify them of a problem and they should help you get it sorted.

16. Book Longer Stays

If you didn’t know longer stays give you an automatic discount. Each property owner is able to set their own custom rates if you book for a week or month. We’ve seen on average a 15% discount on stays a week or more all the way up 40% off the nightly rate on monthly stays.

Our last Airbnb even came out cheaper if we booked it for one week instead of the required five nights. That meant we were able to check out late the last day and let the host know we departed afterward.

Love or Hate Airbnb

We have a love/hate relationship with Airbnb.

We hate Airbnb because of damage the sharing economy has inflicted on the housing market. Five years ago, getting a one year lease may have been an easy and affordable affair. Now, it is common to purchase property as an investment to rent on Airbnb or even sign a lease.

With Airbnb, landlords are able to double or even triple what a monthly tenant would pay. So it’s easy to understand the appeal of renting short term. I mean if you were a homeowner would you rather get $800/week for your property or have a long-term tenant for $1200 a month?

It has resulted in rental prices around the world sky-rocketing. I recently found a one-month basic apartment rental in Nicaragua for $2000, in a country where the average salary is $400 a month. That doesn’t sound right to me. Airbnb also charges guests 12% to use their platform, and 3% to the host. For the hosts, I think this is a great deal because sites like Booking.com and Agoda charge 15-20%. As an Airbnb user, 12% can really tack a lot on to the total cost of a rental.

To top it all off, my Airbnb customer service experience has been horrendous. I can’t speak on behalf of a host, but again as a guest, you don’t have much authority when it comes to problems with your rental experience. What started out as two guys renting an air mattress in their living room, has turned into yet another impersonal company. Along the way, it seems they lost sight of the customer.

That being said, we have been in and out of dozens of Airbnb rentals. Almost all of them were tremendous experiences. Airbnb gives travelers like us an easy and viable hotel alternative. As long-term travelers, we actually prefer to stay in an apartment or house as it affords us all the amenities of a home. That means we can cook, watch TV, wash our clothes, sit at a comfortable desk, and feel at home. It is a more comfortable and personal way to travel.

When traveling with a family or group we can all fit into a home, rather than multiple hotel rooms. A massive plus as it now allows people to socialize and enjoy their trip together. Yes, it was possible to find rentals before Airbnb, but not with the ease and assurance that their website brought.

Airbnb places you in touch with locals, much more than a hotel has ever provided us. We’ve had drinks, lunches, and long chats with some of our Airbnb host. They also provide a local’s insight into their region and almost always share a small part of their home with us.

It’s those reasons that we recommend Airbnb on our site. To people like us, that value a “home” when they travel and want to integrate with the community it continues to draw us back. Stimulus check qualifications, payment schedule, status and rights: Everything to know

Here’s what you need to know about the current round of stimulus payments the IRS is sending out.

How much money will the IRS send you in a stimulus check? How do your taxes tie in and can you get a check even if you don’t pay them? Can anyone seize your economic impact payment, and what’s going on with a second stimulus check for 2020? We’ll answer these questions and more. 

The payments are part of a larger CARES Act relief package passed in March to help individuals, businesses, renters and people who are out of work in the face of a US economy battered by the coronavirus pandemic. But determining who’s eligible, how much you’ll get and other ins and outs is complicated.

Know your stimulus check rights

Here are some important things to know about your stimulus check.

The payment is not taxable: You won’t pay taxes next year on a stimulus payment you receive from the IRS in 2020. The IRS does not consider it income, and a payment you get in 2020 will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2020 tax return next year.

Since the stimulus check doesn’t count as taxable income, you are not required to hand it over to facilities like nursing homes and landlords. Lawmakers are looking into stopping this practice, the LA Times reported. 

Your stimulus payment will also not count toward determining any benefits you receive from the federal government.

You can spend your stimulus money just like cash. If you receive your payment on one of the prepaid debit cards, you can transfer the entire amount to your own account. The one limitation is, the IRS will reduce your payment to offset past-due child support.

Second stimulus check from the IRS: What’s happening now

As the US economy continues to weaken because of the coronavirus pandemic, the pressure is building in Washington to approve another round of aid for individuals and families. Here’s the latest progress on the second stimulus check, including the current proposal for another $1,200 check (maximum) for individuals, and extended relief for renters and unemployed people.

The checks will be paid out through the end of the year, with the bulk of the IRS payments having already gone out.

During the last week of May, an additional 1,877,000 people filed for unemployment as a result of the pandemic, the Department of Labor reported (PDF). The unemployment rate fell to 13.3% for May, which is lower than April’s 14.7% rate but still one of the highest in US history.

The House of Representatives has already proposed a second stimulus package, and the Senate may start work on a package shortly, making a final decision in about a month. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicated that it could be the last stimulus check, according to CNBC. 

How many stimulus checks have been mailed so far?

As of the first week of June, the IRS told CNET it has made more than 159 million payments, including 120 million through direct deposit to bank accounts, 35 million through the mail as paper checks and another 4 million in the mail as prepaid debit cards.

But the agency may still have a ways to go: A recent report from the House Ways and Means Committee estimates as many as 35 million Americans who qualify have not yet received their checks (PDF). The agency plans to continue sending checks through the end of the year to those who are eligible.

How to use the Economic Impact Payment prepaid debit card

On May 18, the US Treasury said it is starting to send about 4 million prepaid debit cards called EIP cards. The Treasury said it’s sending these cards instead of paper checks to some eligible US residents for whom the government does not have banking information. We’ve asked the Treasury for clarification on who gets a card versus a paper check.

The Treasury said you can use the card to make purchases, get cash from in-network ATMs and transfer funds to your personal bank account without a fee. You can also use the card at stores that accept Visa debit cards. Once you receive your EIP card in the mail, head to the EIP card page to set it up.

As part of the 2020 stimulus package, you may meet the requirements for a payment from the federal government.

Find the schedule for when you can expect your check

You can use the IRS Get My Payment service to see a schedule for your payment. The US Postal Service also has a free service that can notify you when your check will arrive in the mail. You’ll need to sign up for it. 

When will the checks be completely paid out?

For those who expect to receive their payments through the mail, the IRS will have sent the bulk of the payments out by the end of June. The agency said it would sharply increase the number of checks mailed through that month. A smaller number of checks may continue to arrive through the end of the year, however. 

If you want to receive your payment straight to your bank through direct deposit, the deadline to provide your banking detailing in the IRS Get My Payment portal has passed. Those who had previously provided the IRS with their banking info can still receive their payment through direct deposit.

The Social Security Administration said Supplemental Security Income recipients who didn’t file a 2019 and 2018 return and who don’t have a representative payee should have received their electronic payment from the IRS by May 13 by direct deposit or to their Direct Express card. For SSI recipients who receive their monthly SSI payment by paper check, the IRS began mailing checks on May 15.

How much stimulus money you get depends on your taxes

The total amount of your stimulus check will be based on your adjusted gross income, or AGI, from your 2019 federal tax filing or — if you haven’t filed this year — your 2018 filing.

If you’ve filed your 2019 federal tax return, you can find that figure on line 8b of the 2019 1040 federal tax form. It’s line 7 on the 2018 1040 tax form. If you haven’t filed this year, don’t worry. The US government has delayed the due date for 2019 taxes to July 15 as a result of coronavirus.

Here’s who is eligible for a stimulus payment

The amount you’ll receive will depend on your total income in 2019 or 2018. If you qualify, you’ll receive one payment. Here’s who qualifies:

If you’re a single US resident and have an adjusted gross income less than $99,000

If you file as the head of a household and earn under $146,500

If you file jointly without children and earn less than $198,000

Read on for how your payment is calculated and how much you can expect. You can also look at this calculator from the Washington Post.

The IRS said someone who died before receipt of the payment, a non-resident alien or someone who is incarcerated does not qualify for a check. These payments need to be returned if received, the IRS said.

How much you’ll get as a single taxpayer

A single US resident must have a Social Security number and an AGI under $75,000 to receive the full amount of $1,200. The sum decreases as your AGI goes up. If your adjusted gross income reaches $99,000, you won’t be eligible for the stimulus. 

Heads of household

If you file as head of a household, you will get the full $1,200 payment if your AGI is $112,500 or less, with the amount decreasing until you reach $146,500.

Couples filing jointly

Married couples filing jointly without children with an adjusted gross income below $150,000 will get a $2,400 payment, decreasing to zero at $198,000.

For children

For each child aged 16 or younger in the family, parents will get a payment of $500. Parents will not receive a payment for children born, adopted or placed into foster care in 2020, because the payment is based only on information from your 2019 or 2018 tax return. The IRS said you may claim the child next year for an additional credit on your 2020 tax return. Older children and other dependents may not be eligible for a payment.

If you haven’t filed federal taxes for 2018, do that right now

The IRS said if you haven’t filed your 2018 federal taxes, that could affect your stimulus check and urges anyone who hasn’t filed a 2018 tax return to file now. Be sure to include direct deposit banking information on the return.

If you’re not typically required to file a tax return, you could still receive a payment

Many who normally are not required to file a tax return — including senior citizens, Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance recipients and railroad retirees — will not need to file a simple tax return to receive the payment, the IRS said.

The IRS said recipients of Supplemental Security Income will automatically receive the full $1,200 economic impact payment, with no action needed on their part.

Others, including those who haven’t filed a 2018 or 2019 return because they are under the normal income limits for filing a tax return, can use the Non-Filers portal to get their payment. To get started, go to the IRS’ Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here site and tap the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here button. As part of the process, you’ll enter personal information and, if you want to receive your stimulus check by direct deposit, banking information.

The IRS said anyone who registers with the non-filers tool by Oct. 15 will receive their payment by the end of 2020.

What about Social Security recipients?

The Treasury Department said that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive a payment. Instead, the IRS will use the information on Form SSA-1099 for Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

The IRS said automatic payments should already be arriving for recipients of Social Security, survivors or disability insurance benefits and Railroad Retirement benefits.

What about those who receive federal benefits and have children?

The IRS said those who receive federal benefits, have dependent children and weren’t required to file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 needed to act by late April or early May to receive a full payment this year.

Without submitting this information by the due date, the IRS will give you $1,200 this year and the additional $500 per eligible child with your return filing for tax year 2020 — roughly a year from now.

SSI and VA beneficiaries had until May 5 to update the IRS.

The update deadline for people who receive Social Security, survivor or disability, or Railroad Retirement benefits was April 22. The IRS said recipients in those groups have been scheduled to receive checks.

The deadline has passed to set up direct deposit to have the check sent to your bank account

If you don’t have direct deposit to your bank account set up, the deadline to provide your banking details in the IRS Get My Payment portal was May 13. Those who had previously provided the IRS with their banking info can still receive their payment through direct deposit. And you can still use the Get My Payment portal to check the status of your payment.

To avoid scams, the IRS cautions you not to provide your direct deposit or other banking information to others who offer to help you set up an electronic transfer.

Do you need to sign up, apply or request your check?

For most, the federal government will automatically send your check to you electronically or in the mail, if you qualify. If you’ve not filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019, the IRS said you may need to file one to receive a payment. Scroll up to the section “If you’re typically not required to file a tax return, you can still receive a payment” for details on who is required to file and how.

What to do if you don’t receive your check

If you qualify for a payment, the IRS plans to mail you a letter about your payment to your last known address within 15 days after it sends the money. The IRS said the letter will provide information on how the IRS made the payment and how to report not receiving the payment if you don’t get it. Several CNET readers, however, are reporting the letter does not include clear instructions for what to do if you don’t receive the payment. We’ve asked the IRS for clarification.

The IRS said to also watch out for phishing schemes and other scams.

Starting May 18, the IRS added 3,500 telephone representatives to help with potential problems regarding payments. The representatives won’t be able to help with problems specific to your payment, however. CNET readers report being able to get through to the service and receiving help.

6 reasons why your COVID stimulus amount was less than you expected

And what you might be able to do about it. But not until next year.

The hubby and I recently got our COVID-19 economic impact payment, despite my grumblings last month about not being able to get into the Get My Payment online tracking tool.

We knew that due to some financial moves we've made in recent years in preparation for retirement, we wouldn't get the full possible payment.

In case it's slipped your mind, that's $1,200 per individual, twice that for married couples who file a joint return. If you have qualifying dependent children younger than age 17, you should get $500 for each of them.

The amount that showed up in our checking account was less than our potential $2,400 pandemic payment. We are not alone in getting less than the max. In our case, that's OK. While the hubby and I always will take unexpected cash, we aren't in dire need of the money as we continue with our self-imposed quarantine.

But many other folks are not as fortunate. They've been laid off or furloughed, have families to feed and utilities to keep on and they want — need — the COVID-19 economic relief payment, the full amount, as soon as possible. Like now.

The Internal Revenue Service apparently is aware of the concerns of folks who, like us, didn't get as much COVID-19 cash as was advertised. Everyone got or will get a stimulus payment also should receive a letter from the IRS explaining the amount directly deposited in our bank accounts or delivered as a specially-annotated Treasury check.

But for folks still waiting for that communique or who still have some questions about their EIP amount, the IRS has issued a statement explaining why some of us didn't get as much as expected.

Earnings determine payments: First, though, let's make sure you know what you should or could have received as a COVID-19 economic impact payment (EIP). The available amounts are based on where your income falls within the coronavirus relief payment earning parameters.

The full $1,200 per person goes to eligible recipients who had in either 2018 or 2019 — the IRS used the filing data from one of those tax years to come up with the amount to issue this year — adjusted gross income up to:

$75,000 for individuals with a filing status as single or married filing separately,

$112,500 for head of household filers and

$150,000 for married couples filing joint returns.

If, however, you made more that the amount for your filing status, your EIP amount is reduced. This applies when your AGI is between:

$75,000 and $99,000 for single or married filing separately taxpayers,

112,500 and $136,500 for heads of households and

$150,000 and $198,000 when a married couple filed jointly.

If you made more than those top income amounts for your status, you won't get any COVID-19 payment at all this year.

Now as to why many of us among the already-delivered 130 million COVID-19 payments got less than the max amount. Here, according to the IRS, are six situations why that might have happened.

1. Slow tax return processing: The IRS automatically sends payments to eligible individuals who filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019. The agency looked first at the most recent filings, those submitted this year for 2019 taxes. If that's not available, it then goes to the 2018 tax return information.

Even if you've filed your taxes this year, the IRS might not use that data. It takes time between receiving your 1040, even one that's e-filed, and processing it. So if the IRS has not finished processing your 2019 return, it will use your 2018 taxes to make your COVID-19 EIP calculation.

That's a bummer for some folks either way. One year could mean a bigger stimulus check, but the IRS ended up using your other eligible tax filing.

For example, you had a child that was reflected on your 2019 taxes, but the IRS used your 2018 return filed before your bundle of joy arrived. In this case, you didn't get the extra EIP $500 for your qualifying dependent. Or you made less money in 2019, but the IRS used your larger 2018 earnings and shorted you some of the immediate COVID-19 payment amount. Sorry.

2. Only younger dependents count: As the example above shows, a dependent child could get you added COVID-19 EIP money. The key word here is child. And even then, the youngster's age is important.

Not every dependent you can claim on your tax return is eligible for the additional $500 payment.

Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act that created the payments, only children eligible for the Child Tax Credit qualify for the added COVID-19 stimulus money. Those qualification rules are, generally, that the child must:

be related* to the taxpayer, *In addition to a taxpayer's own youngsters, related children include adopted children and foster children, as well as a taxpayer's younger siblings, grandchildren, nieces and nephews as long as they can be claimed as dependents.

live with the taxpayer for more than half the year,

be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or other qualifying resident alien,

have a valid Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN),

receive at least half of their support from the taxpayer and

be younger than age 17 at the end of the tax year for which they are claimed.

Where parents of qualifying COVID-19 EIP children are not married and don't file a joint return, only one is eligible to get the extra $500. The parent who claimed the child on his or her 2019 (or 2018 if used) return is the one who will get the added dependent stimulus amount.

3. College students are out of EIP luck: Parents are well aware that their older children who are off at college are still their dependents in almost every definitional aspect. The IRS acknowledges that from a tax standpoint in allowing for most college students to be claimed as dependents on their folks' tax returns.

But for COVID-19 EIP purposes, dependent college students do not qualify for the $500 economic impact payment. Neither in most cases does the young adult qualify for the full $1,200 on his or her own.

Under the CARES Act, for example, a 20-year-old full-time college student claimed as a dependent on his or her mother's federal income tax return is not eligible for a $1,200 COVID-19 payment. Injury to insult, that student's mother will not receive an additional $500 even though she is supporting the college kid.

4. Older dependents also face EIP elimination: The no-EIP situation is the same for other dependents who are 17 or older. While these individuals may qualify for the additional dependent tax credit created under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), they are personas non grata under CARES Act stimulus rules.

These older dependents are not eligible for the $1,200 payment on their own. The taxpayers who claim them also will not receive the additional $500 payment due to the dependents' age.

5. Overdue child support reductions: While claiming a child could get you extra COVID-19 economic relief money, not keeping current with child support could reduce it.

Like tax refunds, an EIP can be offset by any past-due child support. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send the taxpayer a notice if this occurs.

For taxpayers who are married filing jointly and filed an injured spouse claim with their 2019 tax return (or 2018 tax return if they haven't filed the 2019 tax return), half of the total payment will be sent to each spouse. Only the payment of the spouse who owes past-due child support should be offset.

However, the IRS is aware that in some cases a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim also may have been offset by the injured spouse's past-due child support. The IRS is working with the Bureau of Fiscal Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, to resolve this issue.

If you filed an injured spouse claim with your return and are facing a smaller EIP because of your ex's child support delinquency issues, the IRS says you don't have to take any action. As an injured spouse, you will receive their unpaid half of the total payment when the issue is resolved.

6. Debt collections could cut into EIPs: If you are facing collections actions for other unpaid amounts, your EIP could be affected. Economic impact payments, like federal tax refunds, are not protected from garnishment by creditors by federal law once the proceeds are deposited into a taxpayer's bank account.

Making up the missed amount: If you, like the hubby and I, got less that then full COVID-19 economic impact payment amount this year — and remember these payments will be going out through the rest of 2020 — all that relief might not be lost.

Recovery actions, however, won't be available for several more months. 

Tax situations and info entered on Form 1040 tend to change every year. And even though millions of these coronavirus payments are being distributed this year based on 2018 or 2019 tax data, the money is in reality an advance tax credit against your 2020 income.

Congress wrote the CARES Act that way so that the money could go out as quickly as possible this year when people are being hard hit by COVID-19 economic cutbacks.

You might qualify for an EIP amount, either the balance of the maximum amount if you got just a partial payment this year or all of it if you didn't qualify for any based on 2018 or 2019 filings, when you file your tax return next year.

If your 2020 income falls within the earning ranges, which could happen since 130 million (and counting) folks are out of a job right now, you can claim the COVID-19 payment on next year's Form 1040.

The good news also applies to college students and older dependents who were stiffed in this year's advance EIP tax credit payout system. A student, for example, who cannot be claimed as a dependent by a parent or anyone else in tax year 2020, may be eligible to claim a $1,200 credit on his or her 2020 tax return next year.

Similarly, an older parent (or other relative) who was claimed by his or her adult child as a tax dependent (and qualified the taxpayer for the additional dependent credit) didn't get the advance stimulus. But if in 2020 that situation changed and the parent (or other relative) is no longer claimed as a dependent, then that now independent individual might qualify for the $1,200 credit on their own 2020 tax return filed next year.

I know all these next year EIP permutations are of no help now. But it is at least a very little silver lining.

IRS stimulus check: What to know about your eligibility, coronavirus payment, debit card

Here’s what you need to know about the current round of stimulus payments the IRS is sending out.

You’re trying to find out who gets a coronavirus stimulus check and if you meet the qualifications for one. Or maybe you know you’re eligible, but the IRS says you need to provide more information before it can process your payment. Or perhaps you want to check your status and see how much money you’re entitled to receive. And you could be asking if a second stimulus check is likely to arrive before 2020 is through.

What we know about a second stimulus check from the IRS

As the US economy continues to weaken as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, pressure is building in Washington to approve another round of aid for individuals and families. 

For example, an additional 1,877,000 people filed for unemployment during the last week of May as a result of the pandemic, the Department of Labor reported (PDF). The unemployment rate to 13.3% for May, which is lower than April’s 14.7% rate, but still one of the highest in US history.

The House of Representatives has already proposed a second stimulus package, and the Senate may start work on a package shortly, making a final decision in about a month. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicated that it could be the last stimulus check, according to CNBC. 

 Details about the prospects for a second stimulus check are still developing, but we break down what the current proposal for another $1,200 check for individuals (maximum), extended relief for renters and unemployed people. We also outline arguments for an against the proposal and what could happen next.

How many stimulus checks have been mailed so far?

As of the first week of June, the IRS told CNET it has made more than 159 million payments, including 120 million through direct deposit to bank accounts, 35 million through the mail as paper checks and another 4 million in the mail as prepaid debit cards. The agency plans to continue sending checks through the end of the year to those who are eligible.

The checks will be paid out through the end of the year, with the bulk of the IRS payments having already gone out.

Do you have to pay taxes on your stimulus payment? Will it affect your refund next year?

No. You don’t have to pay taxes on a stimulus payment you receive from the IRS. The IRS does not consider it income, and a payment you get in 2020 will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2020 tax return next year. It will also not count toward determining any benefits you receive from the federal government.

You can spend your stimulus money just like cash. The IRS will only reduce the payment to offset past-due child support.

How to use the Economic Impact Payment prepaid debit card

On May 18, the US Treasury said it is starting to send about 4 million prepaid debit cards called EIP cards. The Treasury said it’s sending these cards instead of paper checks to some eligible US residents for whom the government does not have banking information. We’ve asked the Treasury for clarification on who gets a card versus a paper check.

The Treasury said you can use the card to make purchases, get cash from in-network ATMs and transfer funds to your personal bank account without a fee. You can also use the card at stores that accept Visa debit cards. Once you receive your EIP card in the mail, head to the EIP card page to set it up.

Find the schedule for when you can expect your check

You can use the IRS Get My Payment to see a schedule for your payment. The US Postal Service also has a free service that can notify you when your check will arrive in the mail. You’ll need to sign up for it. 

As part of the 2020 stimulus package, you may meet the requirements for a payment from the federal government.

When will the checks be completely paid out?

For those who expect to receive their payments through the mail, the IRS will have sent the bulk of the payments out by the end of June. The agency said it would sharply increase the number of checks mailed through that month. However, a smaller number of checks may continue to arrive through the end of the year. 

If you want to receive your payment straight to your bank through direct deposit, however, the deadline to provide your banking detailing in the IRS Get My Payment portal has passed. Those who had previously provided the IRS with their banking info can still receive their payment through direct deposit.

The Social Security Administration said Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who didn’t file a 2019 and 2018 return and who don’t have a representative payee should have received their electronic payment from the IRS by May 13 by direct deposit or to their Direct Express card. For SSI recipients who receive their monthly SSI payment by paper check, the IRS began mailing checks on May 15.

How much stimulus money you get depends on your taxes

The total amount of your stimulus check will be based on your adjusted gross income, or AGI, from your 2019 federal tax filing or — if you haven’t filed this year — your 2018 filing.

If you’ve filed your 2019 federal tax return, you can find that figure on line 8b of the 2019 1040 federal tax form. It’s line 7 on the 2018 1040 tax form. If you haven’t filed this year, don’t worry. The US government has delayed the due date for 2019 taxes to July 15 as a result of coronavirus.

Here’s who is eligible for a stimulus payment

The amount you’ll receive will depend on your total income in 2019 or 2018. If you qualify, you’ll receive one payment. Here’s who qualifies:

If you’re a single US resident and have an adjusted gross income less than $99,000

If you file as the head of a household and earn under $146,500

If you file jointly without children and earn less than $198,000

The IRS said someone who died before receipt of the payment, a non-resident alien or someone who is incarcerated does not qualify for a check. These payments need to be returned if received, the IRS said.

How much you’ll get as a single taxpayer

A single US resident must have a Social Security number and an AGI under $75,000 to receive the full amount of $1,200. The sum decreases as your AGI goes up. If your adjusted gross income reaches $99,000, you won’t be eligible for the stimulus. 

Heads of household

If you file as head of a household, you will get the full $1,200 payment if your AGI is $112,500 or less, with the amount decreasing until you reach $146,500.

Couples filing jointly

Married couples filing jointly without children with an adjusted gross income below $150,000 will get a $2,400 payment, decreasing to zero at $198,000.

For children

For each child aged 16 or younger in the family, parents will get a payment of $500. Parents will not receive a payment for children born, adopted or placed into foster care in 2020 because the payment is based only on information from your 2019 or 2018 tax return. The IRS said you may claim the child next year for an additional credit on your 2020 tax return. Older children and other dependents may not be eligible for a payment.

If you haven’t filed federal taxes for 2018, do that right now

The IRS said if you haven’t filed your 2018 federal taxes, that could affect your stimulus check and urges anyone who hasn’t filed a 2018 tax return to file now. Be sure to include direct deposit banking information on the return.

If you’re not typically required to file a tax return, you could still receive a payment

Many who normally are not required to file a tax return — including senior citizens, Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance recipients and railroad retirees — will not need to file a simple tax return to receive the payment, the IRS said.

The IRS said recipients of Supplemental Security Income will automatically receive the full $1,200 economic impact payment, with no action needed on their part.

Others, including those who haven’t filed a 2018 or 2019 return because they are under the normal income limits for filing a tax return, can use the Non-Filers portal to get their payment. To get started, go to the IRS’ Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here site and tap the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here button. As part of the process, you’ll enter personal information and, if you want to receive your stimulus check by direct deposit, banking information.

What about Social Security recipients?

The Treasury Department said that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive a payment. Instead, the IRS will use the information on Form SSA-1099 for Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

The IRS said automatic payments should already be arriving for recipients of Social Security, survivors or disability insurance benefits and Railroad Retirement benefits.

What about those who receive federal benefits and have children?

The IRS said those who receive federal benefits, have dependent children and weren’t required to file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 needed to act by late April or early May to receive a full payment this year.

Without submitting this information by the due date, the IRS will give you $1,200 this year and the additional $500 per eligible child with your return filing for tax year 2020 — roughly a year from now.

SSI and VA beneficiaries had until May 5 to update the IRS.

The update deadline for people who receive Social Security, survivor or disability, or Railroad Retirement benefits was April 22. The IRS said recipients in those groups have been scheduled to receive checks.

The deadline has passed to set up direct deposit to have the check sent to your bank account

If you don’t have direct deposit to your bank account set up, the deadline to provide your banking details in the IRS Get My Payment portal was May 13. Those who had previously provided the IRS with their banking info can still receive their payment through direct deposit. And you can still use the Get My Payment portal to check the status of your payment.

To avoid scams, the IRS cautions you not to provide your direct deposit or other banking information to others who offer to help you set up an electronic transfer.

Do you need to sign up, apply or request your check?

For most, the federal government will automatically send your check to you electronically or in the mail, if you qualify. If you’ve not filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019, the IRS said you may need to file one to receive a payment. Scroll up to the section “If you’re typically not required to file a tax return, you can still receive a payment” for details on who is required to file and how.

What to do if you don’t receive your check

If you qualify for a payment, the IRS plans to mail you a letter about your payment to your last known address within 15 days after it sends the money. The IRS said the letter will provide information on how the IRS made the payment and how to report not receiving the payment if you don’t get it. Several CNET readers, however, are reporting the letter does not include clear instructions for what to do if you don’t receive the payment. We’ve asked the IRS for clarification.

Starting May 18, the IRS added 3,500 telephone representatives to help with potential problems regarding payments. The representatives won’t be able to help with problems specific to your payment, however. CNET readers report being able to get through to the service and receiving help.
