I tried something new. Writing a Middle Earth story about young Fili and Kili and Uncle Thorin. I was inspired by this amazing piece of art by @sugarsu Here is the link to the original post. If you like the artwork, please consider reblogging the original post as well.
In the woods of Ered Luin
Summary: Uncle Thorin is taking care of young Fili and Kili and they visit the woods in the area of Ered Luin, The Blue Mountains. Just a lot of fluff and a somewhat anxious Thorin at times, but we all know the boys, so we can't really blame him 😉

It was still early, but Fili and Kili had already been running around since their eyes had opened to a beautiful day in Ered Luin. Dis and Thorin were sitting at the kitchen table, quietly drinking their coffee and listening to the chatter and laughter of the boys. Thorin usually didn’t have a lot of time, so he valued these family moments very much.
Thorin had offered to spend the day with his little nephews. His dear sister Dis had gratefully accepted the offer and looked forward to having some time to herself. But as soon as Thorin had offered to take the boys, next to excitement a little pang of fear hit him. What mayhem would he encounter this fine day? Nothing ever did not happen, something always did.
Thorin mustered up his courage and got up to fetch the boys. When he saw a heap of pebbles, blankets, pillows and a cat on top of it, he wondered what had happened in the few minutes he had taken his eyes off of them. Shaking his head, he said, 'Come on boys, get your coats, put on your boots.’
The heap of blankets, pillows, pebbles and cat immediately came apart and two pairs of eyes looked at him questioningly. 'Where are we going uncle Thorin?' they asked.
“You’ll see. Now come on, get ready,’ he told them.
Not long after, they entered the forest near the Blue Mountains. It was a beautiful day so far, but the big furry clouds in the distance promised some well deserved rain for the plants and wildlife in the forest. The leaves were softly rustling in the breeze, birds were chirping and singing, insects buzzing. The forest was so full of life, yet so peaceful.
Kili was jumping and running around. There was so much to see. Flowers, plants, little rocks, insects. Thorin smiled. That boy never seemed to run out of energy. Fili was usually much more reserved and quiet. He was walking alongside Thorin, observing the woods, asking him all kinds of questions and Thorin was answering them patiently.
‘What animals will we see today uncle Thorin?’ Fili asked. ‘Will there be moose? And wolves? What about bunnies? Oh look, uncle Thorin, what kind of bird is that?’ his little fingers pointing at a bird with a bright red chest, singing its morning song on one the branches of a big oak tree.
Thorin cringed at the idea of encountering a wolf and the pebbles being in danger, but he didn’t have a lot of time to think about it, for Kili came running up to him.
‘Look uncle Thorin, look what I have!’ he exclaimed enthusiastically. He was holding something in his tiny hands, careful not to drop it. Thorin crouched down. ‘What have you got there little man?’
Kili opened his little hands and a black spider crawled out. ‘You can have it uncle Thorin,’ he said proudly and with a big grin on his face. ‘I fetched it for you.’
Oh dear, how to get himself out of that situation.
‘I think the spider is …,’ he started
‘Ciaran’,  Kili said.
‘What?’ Thorin looked at Kili, confused.
‘It’s name is Ciaran,’ Kili explained.
Thorin raised his eyebrows at that and scratched his beard. Wow, he had only just found the spider and it already had a name as if it were part of the family and needed to be taken up in the Durin family tree.
The new addition to the line of Durin was quickly forgotten though, when a rustle of leaves alerted Thorin and he looked in the direction of the sound. The word ‘wolves’ still fresh in his mind, he grabbed Kili and told him to be quiet. He checked on Fili, who was crouching down beside Thorin, imitating his uncle and all three of them looked in the direction of the moving bushes nearby.
A little spooked by Fili’s question about wolves, Thorin wished that he had brought his sword. He held his breath, but he sighed with relief when a deer and a fawn appeared and not a big bad wolf.
‘Oh look uncle Thorin,’ Kili pointed at the fawn, ‘A baby deer! Can we go pet it?’ he asked excitedly.
‘No, Kili,’ Thorin said, ‘They are erm … having breakfast. It’s best to leave them be.’
Kili sighed disappointedly and Thorin chuckled.
‘Come on boys, let’s go about our way. There is a stream not far from here.’
That also got Fili excited and both pebbles ran ahead, their chatter and laughter echoing between the trees. It warmed Thorin 's heart to see them so excited and happy. With a smile on his face, he followed his nephews in the direction of the stream.
The clouds, which had seemed so far away at the start of their walk, now gathered above them, hiding the sun and making the forest a little darker. Drops of rain started to fall and the calming sound of the raindrops falling on the foliage and the fresh smell of wet earth had a calming effect on Thorin. All anxiety about wolves forgotten.
He loved the woods, the sounds, the smells. He filled his lungs with a deep breath of fresh air and for a moment closed his eyes and held his face up to the sky, the fresh rain drops gently falling on his face, his beard and his long, dark hair, which was held back with a beautiful handcrafted clip in the form of a raven.
He stood there, enjoying the moment, but then, at once, snapped back to reality. It had gone quiet. Even though shouting and noise usually didn’t mean anything good when the boys were concerned, neither did absolute silence. He quickened his pace and almost tripped over a boot and another one and another. He followed the trail of boots, picking them up. Apparently, the boys had decided that they no longer needed those.
He approached the stream and saw Fili crouched down, his blue cape over his head and his chin resting in the palm of his hand.  Kili was perched on his hands and knees on a flat stone in the stream.  They were studying a black bird which was hopping from stone to stone in the stream. The bird paused, sat on a stone and curiously turned its head from side to side, seemingly as curious as the boys. It was altogether a peaceful sight, the dripping sound of the raindrops making little circles in the water, the gently flowing stream, and the boys watching the bird, watching the boys.
Thorin crouched down next to Fili and put his big hand on Fili’s tiny shoulder. So that’s why the little rascals had gone quiet, he thought and smiled.
‘Can we keep him uncle?' Kili asked, breaking the silence. ‘Can we take him home so that we can show him to amad?’
‘No my dear boy, your mother wouldn’t be very happy if you took a bird home. It lives here, in the forest, you know. This is its home.  Everyone and everything has its own place in this world and the woods is where the bird belongs. It would be sad if it had to leave his home. You don’t want it to be sad, do you?’
Thorin heard himself say the words and for a moment sadness hit him. His thoughts went to Erebor, his home, where he belonged and which he had been forced to leave and for which he longed with all his heart. One day, he would return to the Lonely Mountain. He was sure of it.
He didn’t have long to think about it, because a frog hopped out of the water, onto the stone chasing off the bird.
Kili giggled and reached for the frog. ‘Can we take …’ he started.
‘No, Kili, we can’t take the frog home either,’ Thorin said sternly, but he had a hard time keeping a straight face. Kili seemed to want to take home every animal and insect he encountered. Thorin was sure that Dis wouldn’t appreciate a zoo in her home.
After a moment, Thorin got up and said, ‘Come on boys, put your boots back on. Let’s go see if amad has something nice to fill your bellies ok? You must be hungry after all these adventures.’
With that, the frog was all about forgotten, the boys hurried to put their boots on and off they went with Thorin in tow. Thorin was quietly enjoying the walk back home, while Kili and Fili chased after butterflies, found treasures - read 'stones' - along the way, chased each other and left Thorin wondering if he, Frerin and Dis had ever had the same amount of energy as these two boys.
The rain had stopped, the sun had broken through the clouds, its rays illuminating the way home and he couldn’t have been more relaxed.
By the time they got home, Thorin was quite proud of himself that so far, the day had passed without any incidents and mayhem under his supervision. He was grateful for the family time, but also, deep down, grateful to be handing them back over to their mother, his dear sister, whom he admired more and more, every time he looked after the boys.  But also deep down, he longed for another day with his nephews, whom he loved as if they were his own sons.

thinking of the contrasts between fili and kili in that kili is not seen as a typical dwarf through things such as short beard, no braids, uses a bow, falls in love with an elf, etc. while fili is always doing the most he can to prove himself as a good dwarf and a good heir to thorin. really shows the difference in fili being the eldest and being more uptight since he has more pressure on him while kili is more rambunctious and free spirited since he doesn’t have as much pressure on him

A Long-Lost Home

Thorin kicked off his boots and let out a huff. Winter was coming, and each day the trek from the forge back to the house he shared with his sister became more difficult. He shrugged off his coat and made his way to the kitchen, fully expecting an ambush from his sister-sons at any moment. Young Fili and Kili never seemed to tire of jumping on him as soon as his presence was made known, no matter how difficult his day has been. Eventually, Thorin had learned to accept the inevitable and humor them for a bit before relaxing for the evening. When no tiny arms were flung around him, he cautiously approached the kitchen.
On the counter sat Kili, his tiny mouth and hands covered in pink stains. Dis was furiously rubbing a rag on his face, attempting to scrub some of it off.
“Mum, that huuuurts,” the young dwarf groaned.
“Well, next time maybe you ought to be a little clearer while eating. Or perhaps just stay away from the raspberry bushes altogether!” Dis gave a little shake of her head and dipped the rag into a nearby bowl of water.
“Uncle Forin!!” Kili screamed as he caught sight of him. The boy had recently lost his front teeth and Thorin had to fight a smile anytime his lisp made an appearance. Unfortunately, however, Kili hadn’t yet learned the value of volume control. It seemed he only knew how to yell. The line of Durin’s eardrums sustained continual damage.
The young dwarf reached his hands out to his uncle but before Thorin could lift him off the counter, Dis turned and shot her brother a glare.
“Oh no you don’t! This one’s not going anywhere till I get him cleaned up.” Kili looked back up at his uncle, big brown eyes pleading to be saved. Another time Thorin may have taken the boy’s side, but he knew there was no use provoking Dis when she was already in a sour mood. She too had the legendary Durin temper.
A frustrated shriek and the sound of something crashing echoed down the hall from the direction of the bathroom. Dis, still scrubbing Kili’s face, turned to Thorin with a sigh.
“Would you please go see what that’s about? Fili’s been in there half an hour, doing Durin knows what.” Thorin squeezed his sister’s shoulder and turned in the direction of the commotion.
Fili was standing on a chair and glaring in the mirror. An unfinished plait laid partly done across his scalp. Well, if you could call it a plait. It was more like extra knots added into already very tangled hair.
“Now, now Fili my boy. What’s the matter?”
Fili’s words came out in a rush.
“I was trying to braid my hair but it was so tangled cause me and Kili were playing in the bushes today but I couldn’t brush it out so I just tried braiding it but it won't work and now my arms hurt so bad and-“ Fili let go of his hair and buried his face in his arms with a frustrated huff. Thorin felt a touch of sympathy for his nephew. He very clearly remembered his own frustration when first learning to braid his hair. He laid a hand on Fili’s back.
“I felt the same way when I first learned to braid.”
“You?” Fili turned large eyes up to Thorin. “But you’re good at everything, Uncle!” A gruff chuckle escaped Thorin’s throat.
“Not at first I wasn’t. It took a lot of practice and patience.”
“But I’ve been practicing so long !” Fili cried. “And I’ll never get these tangles out of my hair. I’m doomed to be ugly forever!” Thorin couldn’t stop the corner of his mouth lifting at that. His two nephews quite enjoyed catastrophizing.
“Let me help you then,” Thorin offered. He reached up into one of the shelves and pulled out a brush. Starting at the ends of Fili’s golden locks, he gently worked through each tangle. Fili’s head wasn’t as sensitive as his brother’s, who refused to even have his hair brushed, much less braided. Still, he involuntarily winced a few times when Thorin pulled a little too hard. When the brush finally passed unencumbered through the golden strands, the elder dwarf set it down and began parting the hair. He separated it into five thin bundles and began braiding.
“Um, Uncle?” Fili asked tentatively. Thorin raised an eyebrow.
“Can you tell me some more stories of home?” Thorin paused and looked down, swallowing an unexpected lump in his throat. Fili hadn’t yet been born when the dwarves had fled Erebor. He had never known the kingdom under the mountain. Yet, he still called it home. While Kili often begged his uncle for tales of adventure and bravery, Fili tended to like the tales of the lost kingdom more. The home he had never known.
“Uncle?” Fili’s small voice broke Thorin out of his reverie.
“Oh course, dear nephew.” He took a deep breath. “In the kingdom of Erebor lived a great king…”
Fili leaned into his uncle’s touch as Thorin gently pulled his hair through intricate patterns. While he weaved the hair, he weaved tales of Erebor. He let his love for his homeland shine through the stories. He told of the noble king Thror, whose rule was so great that even the elves paid respects to him. He told of the magnificent statues carved of ancient dwarf kings. He told of the vast riches the treasury held, of the prosperity of his people. He described great feasts held in the mighty halls of Erebor, the sound of laughter echoing off the high ceilings.
He did not speak of Smaug, nor of the gold sickness that took his grandfather. He spoke not of the Pale Orc nor the mines of Moria. Those tales could wait. For now, he would speak of happier times. Of golden days spent in his grandfather’s halls under the mountain.
At that moment, Thorin made an oath. He had always known one day he would reclaim Erebor, but today he promised himself that when he did, his nephews would be right there beside him. The line of Durin would return to their rightful place on the throne, where they would rule for centuries to come.

At what age is a dwarf considered a young adult? What about a the human equivalent of their 30's?
I've been googling for some information about Tolkien's dwarves and their age timeline but I can't find anything concrete. I know the age where a dwarf is considered an adult is ages 40-50, similar to when a hobbit turns age 33, but I'm getting charts where they're basing the dwarven ages all the way up to 375 and comparing it to the human equivalent.. but then I get an average lifespan of about 250 years. Much confusion.
Can anyone knowledgeable help me confirm? It's for my bagginshield fic. :)

Modern AU: mafia LoTR/the Hobbit x teen mafia reader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Age: 15 reader Chan is the young daughter and heiress of a very well known Mafia boss and a target for other Mafias.
the Bardlings are older in this. Warning: kidnapping and spanking.
You are having breakfast with your mother who is the boss of a famous mafia despite her busy schedule she always makes time for you. Your father was the previous boss of the mafia but when he died before your birth he gave it to your mother. Being the daughter of a mafia boss has its ups and downs.
No one ever dares to mess with you and best of all a lot of students wants to be friends with you, not for wealth or because of your cool mom but because your are a very nice person the downside however is that you could be the target for rival Mafias like the Durin Mafia, the Mirkwood mafia, the Rivendell Mafia, the Bowman Mafia even the Baggins Mafia.
As you eat your breakfast your mother lightly cleared her throat "Y/N dear I have a meeting with the other Mafia bosses this afternoon. I don't want to leave you here alone since I gave the servants a vacation for their hard work so I'm taking you with me." When she said that you got excited because this is your first Mafia meeting and you never saw the other bosses in person "Really Mom?" You asked excitedly "Yes. But I want you to stay close to me." When she said that the bus horn beeps "Love you Mom see you at noon." You said getting up from your seat and giving her a kiss on the cheek while walking towards the door.
At School:
Tumblr media
When the bus pulled up your friends came up to you and together all of you went to your lockers "Hey we don't have any plans right? I promised my folks I'd watch my sister tonight." asked Porsha "I'm watching my niece and nephew tonight." Adam said "It's game night at my house and I volunteered to get the snacks." Tyler said "No my mom has a meeting this afternoon and is taking me with her." You told them "Oh thank god we don't have plans today except for our plans for the arcade on Friday." Adam said taking out his history text book "yeah because Friday night is our night." Tyler said until the two minute warning bell rang.
At 12:30:
It was now break time. Everyone was goofing off and planning for the weekend until the class phone rang "Class 256." The class aid said "Ohh Y/N your Mother came to pick you up." She said "Ok." You said collecting your things and going to your locker "By Y/N." Your class said together.
After putting your books away and grabbing your book bag you made your way to the front desk to see your mother in her suit talking to the front desk lady "Thank you have a good afternoon." She said and walking out with you behind.
You rode with your mom up front as you told her what happened at school "You guys were dissecting squid today? We dissected frogs when I was in school." She said "Yep and one of them was still filled with ink it squirted Mr Alfrid." You told your mom until you stopped in front of a huge building.
The building was bigger on the inside with a lot of doors and hallways and was eerily quiet except for a few voices at one of the doors with two guards blocking it "Welcome Mrs L/N." One of them said opening the door for you and your mother "Thank you." You said to the guards who both smiled and nodded.
Inside you see a lot of people you never meet "Hello M/N." A man with waist length blond hair and icy blue eyes greeted your mother as well as everyone else "Who's the kid?" A man with shoulder length brown hair with grey streaks and stubble asked "This is my daughter! Dear introduce yourself." You looked at everyone and said "hello my name is Y/N L/N I am 15 years old and this is my first time here." You said making everyone surprised "She's younger then Tilda." A woman about ten years older then you said to a man about a year younger then her but 9 years older then you besides him was a woman five or six years older then you "I didn't even know you have a child. She looks just like you." A black haired man said "Can we get to the meeting at hand please?" Asked a man with Black and silver streaked hair, a black beard and blue eyes on ether side of him were two more men one about 22 years older then you and the other 15 or 16 years older then you.
The meeting started with no interruptions "So M/N why don't you bring Your child around more often?" The tall blond asked "Thranduil can you please not bring my daughter into this? She's still a minor." your mother said annoyed making him and the other four men smirk at you much to your discomfort "She looks like a mini M/N." One of the men who looks like Elrond said "Shut it Elladan." The other said "Will you both act your age for once." Asked a woman who looks like a female version of them and Elrond. you gave her a thankful smile which she gave back.
After the chaotic meeting you and your mother drive to a restaurant for lunch with Thranduil and his son Legolas who is 23 years older than you. Your mother and Thranduil sat up front with your mother driving while you and Legolas sat on back while one of Thranduil's guards drove his car. The car was silent with the adults talking and you playing on your phone you suggested a sushi restaurant since you haven't had sushi in a long time.
Inside the restaurant:
You and Legolas are getting food the guard with you two while your parents talked Legolas asked you what's the best sushi to start with and you happily told him F/S (favorite sushi) after getting your food both of you sat down with your parents while they talked Over their own sushi and whine while the guard stands.
After eating dessert you had to use the bathroom "Mom I'm going to the bathroom." You told her while getting up "ok dear." She said giving you the ok "I also have to use the bathroom father." Legolas said giving Thranduil a wink who gives him a smirk.
After using the toilet you went to wash your hands as your doing so something didn't feel right. You felt woozy, everything was spinning, and you felt sleepy it then hit you that the room was smoky and before you knew it you collapsed the last thing you see are a pair of legs.
A few hours later:
You wake up feeling like you had a hangover. You adjusted your eyes to the light and saw that you weren't in your own room. This rooms walls were painted a Scarlett color, the bed was queen size with sheets the same color as the walls there was a small wardrobe, nightstand, mirror and a big window letting in the moonlight. When you got out of the bed you saw that your still wearing your school uniform (image above) you fearfully ran towards the door hoping it was all a dream and that your in the hospital but only to find it locked from the outside.
You looked around for your phone but it was no where in the room. You sat on the bed feeling sick until the sound of the door unlocking was heard "Looks like someone's awake." A familiar deep voice said looking up you see Thranduil still in his suit but you also saw the other men from the meeting you believed your mother called them Bard, Bilbo, Elrond and Thorin "I can't believe you actually kidnapped M/N's daughter, the heiress to the L/N name." The one named Thorin said to Thranduil who smirked in victory "You even did it right under M/N's nose." the one named Bard said. Your eyes went wide with the fact that you've been kidnapped and worst of all your mother won't be able to find you anytime soon if you'll ever see her again that is. So many questions felled your head 'why am I here? Will Mom find me? Will I be able to go to school? will I see Porsha, Adam and Tyler again? What are they going to do with me?' Your brain went numb from all the questions in your head because by god this was to much and you just want it to go away "So what now? I mean what are you going to do with her?" The man with short curly hair and green eyes asked while pointing at you making the others look to you "I'll keep her here. After all she is something or someone precious to M/N!" He said walking towards you and picking you up from the bed by your underarms like you weighed nothing bye god you were small compared to everyone in this room even Bilbo Baggins the shortest man in the room was taller then you "Here are the rules,
1. you are not going to school anytime soon.
2. You are to wear what I give you.
3. You are to use my last name.
4. I am your father so you well address me as so and do what I say.
5. You are to listen to Legolas your new big brother.
6. I am hanging on to your phone until Your obedient enough.
And finally the last rule, you are not to leave this house."
You got furious with the rules "GIVE ME A GOOD REASON WHY I SHOULD LISTEN TO ANY OF THESE STUPID RULES, TO YOU AND YOUR SON! AND CAN YOU PUT ME DOWN IM NOT A BABY?!" you shouted in rage making the others lightly chuckle "It's quite adorable when mafia children act tough." Bard said making Thranduil lift you higher "Because your mother took something precious of mine so I'm taking something precious of hers, We are adults with Legolas being 23 years older then you and you will follow these 'stupid' rules or else." You where not being held prisoner by a guy you only just meet "Or else what?" You asked defiantly making him smirk "Perhaps this is the proper time to show you the punishment for disobedience little one." He said sitting on the bed and swinging you across his lap causing you to yelp. He lifted up your school skirt revealing your black shorts "WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING YOU CREEP?" You screeched in alarm "Shush." He said at this point you felt your temper rising "IM NOT A CHILD." You screeched once again feeling like he was bullying you "If you continue behaving like a child then a child you shall be treated as." He said delivering the first swat making you squeak after a few swats he spoke "So are you going to be obedient?" He asked still delivering swats "No." You screamed "Suit yourself." He said swatting harder to the point of your backside feeling like it's on fire "YES YES ILL LISTEN JUST PLEASE STOP." You screeched out not wanting to take this torture anymore you haven't been spanked in years since you were little for making so many nanny's quit. After the torture of spanking he sat you up on his lap with a victorious smirk on his face you've never felt so humiliated or vulnerable in your life "Good and one more thing Elrohir, Elladen, Legolas, Arwen, Fili, Kili, Sigrid, Bain, Frodo and Tilda will all be looking after you since you went through 60 different nanny's in the past." He said making the other four men followed by nine familiar faces but one you never meet before. He looked to be seven or eight years older then you, he had curly black or brown hair and blue eyes "WHAT?!" All of them asked in shock looking at you like You have two heads "What? They weren't any fun." You said revealing your rebellious and fun loving sides "We'll talk about this in the morning. It is past your bed time young Lady." Thranduil said but you looked at the time "But it's only 9:04." You said annoyed "Yes but your still young." He said putting you back on the bed he and everyone else left after he turned off the light "Jerk face." You said rubbing your still burning bottom threw your skirt and shorts then you slowly crawled into bed and fell asleep hopping that your mother will find you.
At your house:
M/N was angrily looking at the footage of Thranduil, Legolas and the guard kidnapping her daughter "Just you wait Thranduil Mirkwood." She said angrily closing her lab top.

Fall in Ered Luin 🎃
Summary: Family Fluff - Thorin spends the day with his young nephews Fili and Kili. Thorin thinks that after a couple of successful times, he has babysitting under control, but does he, really?
Inspired by, but not specifically for @fellowshipofthefics fotfictember I just finally have vacation and my muse showed up 💜

Tumblr media
Sunrays were illuminating the damp, mossy grounds of the Ered Luin woods, which were covered in an array of pretty red, yellow and brown colored leaves. The air was filled with the scent of Fall. Thorin took a deep, soothing breath and closed his eyes, the sunrays warming his face. For a moment, Kili and Fili’s chatter and laughter softened and a smile played on his lips. He was content. No, he was happy. A welcome change to the feelings of sadness which usually haunted him.
He opened his eyes again and looked at the boys scouring the ground for acorns, twigs and leaves and their little treasures, aka rocks.
Thorin had offered to take Fili and Kili for a walk in the woods, while Dis, his beloved sister, would get supplies from the market for a nice dinner and a pumpkin pie.
Usually, when they went into the woods, the boys, especially Kili, wanted to bring home all kinds of things, including animals, but Thorin could proudly say that so far, he had managed to get home without much more than pretty rocks and pebbles and the occasional stick.
Today, however, he had told them that they could bring anything home with them, so that they could make a nice Fall project from what they would find. Both Fili and Kili had brought their tiny rucksacks to carry their precious collection back home.
“Put the bunny down, Kili,” Thorin bellowed, when he saw Kili trying to stuff the animal into his rucksack.
“But Uncle! “ Kili protested, “You said we could take anything!”
With a sigh, Thorin crouched down beside his nephew and petted the bunny, before taking it and releasing it. Kili’s chin wobbled and tears sprang to his eyes.
Thorin gently stroked the little pebble’s head and explained, “You can take any leaves, acorns, flowers and things like that, Kili. You just can’t take home any animals, ok? They belong here, in the woods” He smiled at Kili, pulled out an acorn from his pocket, which he had picked up earlier and Kili’s eyes lit up. Sorrows all forgotten, he sprang up and ran towards his brother to show him the gift.
Fili was crouched down, curiously studying some pretty colored mushrooms. “Uncle Thorin!”, he yelled, “come look”. He proudly pointed at his find. “Aren’t they pretty!” he exclaimed and Thorin had to admit that the big red mushrooms with white spots were a pretty sight on the green, mossy forest bed. He just loved the Fall and its colors and scents.
After having roamed around a while and the pebbles having collected their treasures, they walked back home, where Dis was already unpacking the goodies she got from the market.
“Can we help make the pie?” Fili asked, having climbed up on a chair to look at the supplies sprawled out on the kitchen table.
“I’m not sure that’s …” Dis started, but Thorin stepped in and offered to make the pie with the boys, so that she could rest a bit. Dis hesitated for a moment, but having some time to herself sounded wonderful.
“I got this and the boys,” Thorin reassured her and gently ushered her out of the kitchen.
“All right then.” Dis smiled and left them to it.
“So boys, what do we need?” Thorin asked, rolling up his sleeves.
“Forks!” Kili shouted.
“No, dumbass,” Fili laughed. “We first need to make the pie before we can eat it. We need the recipe, Uncle Thorin,” he said and climbed off the chair to grab the book from a side table, which was filled with cookbooks and notebooks with secret recipes by Dis. He had helped his mother in the kitchen many times before and he knew exactly which book had the recipe for the pumpkin pie.
For the next hour or so, Thorin and the boys managed to put the ingredients together and the pie was finally in the oven. When Dis entered the kitchen, she found Thorin, Fili and Kili and the entire kitchen, covered in flour and remnants of ingredients. Thorin looked a little guilty and the boys, well, they just looked proud. She couldn’t help but giggle. “Need a hand, my dear brother?” she asked.
Thorin sighed gratefully and a while later, the kitchen, as well as Thorin, Fili and Kili, were spotless again.
“Why don’t you go rest a bit near the fire?” she told Thorin.
“Can we have a story, please, Uncle Thorin?” the boys pleaded, tucking on his shirt.
“Alright, alright,” Thorin agreed and swooped the boys up into his arms and onto his shoulder. With the boys dangling from his broad shoulders, giggling and squealing, he retreated from the kitchen, leaving Dis with a smile on her lips. She loved the boys so much and her brother wasn’t too bad either.
When Dis entered the living area a while later with a tray laden with hot chocolate and pumpkin pie, she found the boys lying on their tummies on the soft rug in front of the fire, glued to Thorin’s lips, who was telling them a scary story. They ooh-ed and aaah-ed and were completely engrossed in the story.  When they saw her with the goodies, however, they sprang up and took the pie and hot chocolate, only to sit down again and beg Thorin to continue the story.
When their bellies were full and the story finished, the boys were visibly tired and yawned. They curled up beside Uncle Thorin, who had a hard time keeping his eyes open himself.
“I should change my profession to babysitter. I’m good at it.” he whispered, proudly. He smiled and gently pressed a kiss on Kili and Fili’s heads.
“I guess you are,” Dis humored him, holding back comments about the state of the kitchen and the boys earlier. They love you, my dear brother, as do I. Days like these are my favorite, especially in the Fall and I’ll make sure they stay in my memory forever.
“Likewise , my dear sister,’ Thorin agreed. “Family time is the best.” and with those words, Thorin dozed off, holding his beloved nephews Fili and Kili close.

Cruelly Hung

Warnings: being hung by your hands, kind of racial hate
Word count: 889
A young Fili find out just how cruel humans can be to dwarves when he is hung by his hands and left to die.
Tumblr media
Please refer to the warnings of this story.  If you go past this point you are consenting to reading this content.
The ropes were tight around the young prince’s wrists, cutting and burning his skin with every struggle. They were suspended high above his head leaving the rest of his body to hang uselessly, tormenting his mind as he swung and struggled to free himself from his confinements, each time missing its mark with his dwarven body’s short stature.
The icy winds swirling from the snowy mountain tops struck his skin like arrow tips and as the sun slowly set around him, the temperature only got worse. Goosebumps plagued his skin and he could feel his teeth chattering in his skull. Now, dwarves were not as susceptible to the elements as humans or hobbits were, but after being striped to his trousers and left hanging for almost an hour now, Fili was truly feeling the effects of his torcher.
His hands were slowly going numb, the blood flow being cut off to his fingers by ropes that only grew tighter the longer he hung there. His thoughts were beginning to slow as his mind became fuzzy the more he tried to struggle his way to the ground. His shoulders ached as his muscles were pulled at an odd angle above him, tensing and straining with every shiver of cold.
Again, he wrapped his numb fingers around the ropes to pull himself up, taking gaping breaths of air that he struggled to do while his arms were pulled above his head.
He wanted to cry, to scream at his betrayal, but his body was to weak to conger up such reaction. If only he had listened to his uncle when he warned Fili not to trust the humans. His slow death would be his punishment for not caring for his King’s words.
Fili had met them deep in the wood while hunting, three young human boys. They had watched him strangely but treated him kindly. They young dwarf had half the mind to run that second, but he so very rarely came across creature his age. Even if their kind aged differently, they have been young like him and he had abandoned all the warnings and red flags to chase after them in play. He had not expected their kind smiles and playful whispers to be in malice, a lure to get the ‘strange creature’ to follow them to his end.
No sooner had he introduced himself to them he found his hands being tied and his body thrown of the edge of an abandoned barn roof. They had laughed at his struggling and panic, turning their backs and leaving him there for the creatures of the woods to find. He had begged and pleaded for them to come back, for someone to help him, but they had left with glee in their eyes. And now Fili understood why he wasn’t allowed near the human settlements. Why he was hidden whenever that had to pass by the trading merchants of men or locked inside when every there was a territorial dispute between the two races. Because they would hang you and leave.
A rustle in the bushes somewhere below him made his heart pound in his chest. He tried to turn his head, but his position left him blind to anything that wasn’t right in front of him. He opened his mouth to call out for help but closed it again in fear that it would be a wolf or warg, or worse, another human.
It wasn’t until he heard the deep voice speak in his native tongue did he cry out, desperately swinging and struggling no matter how badly it cut into his hands.
The rustling grew louder the more he screamed and pleaded and he gasped in relief as his uncle burst out of the undergrowth, sword in hand and eyes ablaze in anger. When his eyes found Fili, striped and hanging by his hands he called out again and raced up the rotting staircase of the barn, reeling in the rope and pulling his nephew into a protective hug.
Fili’s shivering frame latched onto his kin, nuzzling into the warmth of his body and furs. Unsure of the weak wooden frame they stood on, Thorin rushed them back to the solid earth, hushing and cooing at his young nephew in an attempt to stop his sobbing. The king silently checked him over, testing his wrists and shoulders as Dwalin and Gloin stood guard around them. When he was finished and satisfied, he unbuckled his thick jacket, letting the material wrap around Fili’s tiny frame as he pulled him into his chest.
Fili could see the anger in his uncle’s eyes and blamed himself, digging his face into the crook of his neck to hind from the world and his uncle’s disappointment in him. He felt Thorin’s body take a deep and shuttering breath and his arms moved to hold him closer.
“Easy now little lion, you are safe,” his uncle’s deep baritone voice called to him, his chest rumbling under Fili’s chin. The young darrow didn’t answer but gave a small nod. He looked around at his kin’s faces and felt a rush of emotions overcome him. The feel of his uncle’s hand rubbing circles on his back was calming and as the comforting feel of warmth and safety returned to him, he let his eyelids flutter close.

For: Fili :: @swordoaths Muse: Hal Verse: Unexpected Journey | au
A knock on the door was the first, and only, sign that the Master of Bag End's evening was getting disrupted. By Dwarves of all people. At least, it would have been the first sign if Bilbo hadn't been warned about the Dwarf rune on his front door earlier. He glanced over at the chair nearest the window of his living room and gave a small smile at the curled up asleep young Ranger.
Whether Hal would remain asleep was a different matter altogether though. Dwalin and Balin had noticed and kept a quieter tone but the Hobbit wasn't sure if the two now standing on his doorstep would do the same. He let them in with a warning to keep their voice down- which Kili promptly failed when he saw the older two Dwarves.
Hal went from asleep to awake at the noise and on her feet in seconds. It took her a few minutes, and Bilbo saying where they were, before she started to relax. She ran a scarred hand through her hair, then tilted her head to look at Fili. "Chances of your Uncle getting lost, Prince Fili? Since I doubt you two were allowed to come alone."
