i feel like not many people know this but the storyline of the video game simon plays with ayub in episode one parallels his relationship with wilhelm (just in case you needed more proof of how insane the attention to detail in the show is): 

the game is called ‘a way out’ and follows two convicts as they plot to escape a prison and in the show, simon plays leo, who has been in the prison for longer. the other character, vincent, is a recent transfer to the prison - see where i’m going with this?

[spoilers for a way out ahead], although leo is hesitant at first, the two men decide to come up with an escape plan because they share a grudge against the same man - very reminiscent of W & S’ relationships with august (also: potential season two plot point?). the two bond and save each other a few times during their journey but towards the end, vincent ends up betraying leo and reveals he was an undercover agent the whole time - the reason leo was arrested in the first place was because of a sting operation vincent was involved in. similarly, wilhelm is the reason simon is caught up in the video scandal, but he also leaves simon to deal with the fallout by denying his involvement. *cue getaway car by taylor swift*

this video game as a framing device does not only parallel wilhelm and simon feeling trapped in hillerska - and their society as a whole - for their otherness, but, because it literally involves criminals, it also helps reinforce the reoccuring theme that W&S are constantly made to feel like their relationship is peverse or wrong in some way ( which i could make a whole post about, i have Thoughts). 

anyways all of this makes the scene where simon tells wilhelm that they “did nothing wrong” just that much more impactful.

i just rewatched episode 6 for the first time and i think i was just really overwhelmed taking everything in the first time not really processing my emotions in the moment but now that i know what to anticipate i don’t think i’ll ever be able to watch this episode without crying again. there’s never been any piece of media that’s hit so hard for me. i’m not really the type to actively bawl over fiction but i sure as hell can’t see what i’m typing through my tears now. what the fuck man. how is anyone meant to get over this?

She’s seen enough emaciated young girls from wealthy families with sunken, lifeless eyes and thinning hair walk through her door. It’s taught her that fundamentally a lot of eating disorders stem from a wish of control rather than a wish to be beautiful. Somewhere along the line though, it gets mixed up, starts to mean the same thing, controlling your intake and wanting to be smaller. Although she’d never admit it to the prince’s face she worried about him when the video debacle happened, there are some weights people don’t reach without restrictive methods and she’s good at recognizing them. Watching him walk in through the doors to her office is another thing though, a familiar aura greets her, withdrawn and alarmingly isolated.

Or, Wilhelm takes a shine to certain very self destructive coping methods. A 5+1 fic where we see Wilhelm's eating disoder through the eyes of five people he knows and one he gets to know.

i love living in denial so i am very bad at closing cycles and dealing with endings. (so this’ll turn out very sappy) i’ve been invested in young royals since july 2021 and it’s hard having to let it go. with all its highs and lows, this show made me feel seen and brought me lots of comfort when i needed it and very fun times on the internet that i’ll look back at fondly. it saddens me knowing i won’t be seeing these characters again or have another season to look forward to (although never say never, right?) but i guess everything good must come to and end.

this cast and their characters will be very much missed, but they’ll always have a special place in my heart 💜
