When I watched young royals with W 💖 @darktwistedgenderplural (thank you again a million times for doing this with me!!!!!) their insights made me realise so many new things and as we are currently having a bit of a Kristina discourse in the fandom i want to share something i noticed.
Because there's something very interesting about the lyrics in the song and the timing during the scene where Kristina arrives at Hillerska in season 2 episode 6.
When the car enters these are the lyrics
Tumblr media
And what's even more interesting in my opinion are the lyrics when Kristina hugs Wilhelm
Tumblr media
To me this is Wilhelm wondering how it would feel to have a properly loving and caring mother.
The screenshots are taken from the yr clips by threewordseightletters on youtube

003 | THE ART OF THE FRAME: We Are the Camera [1x01] -- follow the link below to listen!!
(TW: References to m*astrubation, abusive relationships, and hazing)
Margaret and Anton start getting into the little details with a discussion of the cinematography of Season 1, Episode 1 of Young Royals. While deciding what ought to count as cinematographic anyway, Margaret admits to hyperfixating on the first time Wilhelm smiles, and Anton calls out the shift of focus at the end of the classroom scene for making him feel *attacked*.

The theme music for People Don't Talk About... Young Royals is a dynamically-modified version of a selected portion of "The Lowest Place on Earth" by REW<<.

In awe of the music choices for both last scenes. Season 1 end with Wilhelm being heartbroken, full of resentment with a strong desire for revenge - Revolution. While at the end of season 2, even if he stands in front of everyone with the intention to break with traditions, he does it out of love, for Simon - and then the Most Beautiful Boy. His urge to change things is the same at the end of both seasons but his motives and his state of mind aren’t. And both songs capture that perfectly.

Music as therapy in YR
Some thoughts on how the characters in YR use music therapeutically - to help them process, regulate and understand their emotions.
Simon's song
Simon's song is the most obvious example. He starts writing his song in the beginning of the second season, not really meaning to make it about Wille at first. He doesn't know how to feel about Wille and what to do with him, defaulting into avoidance.
Wille creeps into his songwriting after Wille is nearly taken away from Hillerska. Simon is shocked and starts pouring his emotions into the song. See my other post for a closer look with song lyrics included.
Until this point he hasn't really spoken about his feelings with anyone, doesn't fully understand himself, so this is where he starts to actually process what's happened and how he really feels. Writing the lyrics helps him put it all into words, while the music (melodies ad harmonies) also carries emotional meaning.
By the Valentine's ball, Simon has understood - and I'm arguing the songwriting is a significant factor for him in gaining this understanding - that his emotions for Wille aren't going away, and he's ready to admit that, both to himself and Wille. Writing the song has helped him bring the conflicting emotions out in the open, making it an easy decision to follow Wille outside at the ball and kiss him because he really really wants to.
Wille's music
Wille is also using music to help with his emotions. This is shown already in the very first scene in S1, where we are introduced to Wille, showing his fight in the club while he's in the car being driven away. Suddenly we see that the song we've been hearing is actually blasting from his earphones. Upset and anxious, he's matching the music he's listening to his emotional state.
We see the same thing in S2 when Wille starts the process of letting go of Simon. He's listening to Lonely Ones, again matching the music to his emotions, helping him feel what he needs to feel so that he can get through it. Wille doesn't have many people to rely on either, so music works as extra support and safety net, reflecting his emotions back to him.
Using music this way is not simply wallowing in the emotions, it's a valid way to process and regulate. If Wille were to do this more consciously, he could really find music helpful in dealing with his anxiety.

I just need to share the fact that every time I watch the first episode, this bit of the song stays stuck in my head for hours and I find myself randomly singing "shake your bum bum like it's your mission" for the rest of the day xD

I wanted to talk about the music in Erik's funeral scene, because before watching it I was betting they would use Mozart's Lacrimosa from his Requiem in D minor. I mean, is the most famous movement of the most famous Requiem in history, and is widely used in tv and cinema when someone dies. The Lacrimosa is sad, and for me it represents the grief you feel when you get past the negation stage, so it's your basic music for funeral scenes. But the scene is introduced by some choral music I didn't recognize (but it worked for me because religious music is almost always choral; only instrumental or with soloists wouldn't have the same effect). And then it changes to the first movement of Fauré's Requiem. They use very little of it, but I recognized it almost immediatly 'cause I've been rehearsing it this summer (and I'm OBSESSED with it).
Fauré's Requiem, also in D minor, is all about peacefulness and the liberation that death gives to the deceased. Most Requiems have some movements that are a bit more happy or cheerful, but the general vibe is of sadness and even anger (specially on the Dies Irae, because, well, it's in the title). This is because the focus is in the emotions of those who remain living, of those left behind. Fauré, however, chooses to focus on the rest that death means. When you die, christians say you go to Heaven and you'll live there finally free from terrenal problems.
At first, it doesn't seem that this matches with the emotions Wille is feeling. He's crushed by her brother's death and the fact that he has to deal now with much more pressure than he already had to. Something more obscure, not necessarily Mozar's Lacrimosa, would've been more fitting.
But although the visual focus is on Wille, I think the music focus is on Erik, and how death is for the royal family almost the only way to be completely free from their obligations and all the pressure they are forced to endure. Erik doesn't need to have an official persona and a real one anymore; he can finally rest.

can we pls talk abt how omar, the omar who was so unsure of what he was doing and had never before acted not thinking he was that great at it, walked into the young royals auditions and his magic was so palpable they totally changed the script of who his character was going to be??? bc they had to have him play that role and he needed to be reflected in it. oh my god and he still is shocked ppl like his acting but when i tell you seeing simon eriksson come to life on my screen was so special and something i fully believe couldnt be done by someone else. Pointing out little moments and details of scenes that need to be remembered.
music room's kiss scene • episode 3
wilhelm is a man on a mission. he looks at simon up and down, he's crystal clear about what his intentions are - the lyric of the song going 'i do what i want and i'm gonna do you' right in this moment is *chef's kiss*. he just waits for simon to notice him before making the next move.
it’s cute how oblivious simon is at first. he reads the room as soon as he sees wille's behavior tho.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
let’s focus on wille humming and walking backwards to lead them into the music room. he’s so effortlessly playful, flirty and determined to get simon's attention.
simon doesn't follow him right away but stands by the locker to watch him entering the room first. you can tell he’s enjoying this just as much.
he goes after him eventually, checking the hallway once more, with the most unsubtle expression ever. they're my fav sappy boyfriends.
Tumblr media
simon making big steps to push wille against the wall and kiss him - the tension must have been too much for them to wait any longer. they don't really care about anything but to love each other.
again, not having a wider shot to see wilhelm's hands makes me feel like something very important is missing :(
Tumblr media
this moment makes me melt! i love to see wille towering over him but simon being the one still in charge, grabbing him by the jacket to guide his body. he doesn't mind at all sitting on the piano bc to stop kissing is not even an option.
their giggles in between are so them - smiling into the kiss is so them, especially this season.
Tumblr media
they have to be in the most uncomfortable position ever but still need to pull each other the closest they can and deepen the kiss.
simon literally pushing wille's face away from him when they get interrupted is funnyyy.
Tumblr media
they try so hard to hide the embarrassment. standing five feet apart is the first rule to not look suspicious i guess *giggling*.
chemistry so good that even their nods and hidden smiles are in sync.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
their laughter are too much spontaneous for this moment to not be improvised in my head.
anyway, look at them being so freaking happy and giggly for not getting caught in the middle of a make out session!
Tumblr media
something so romantic about their faces moving closer and closer with every whispered word. they're gravitating towards each other.
simon doing the triangle method for the first time - he learned from the best bf!!! and wilhelm is focusing on his lips instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh they look soo annoyed. fair to say that the school's music room is not the smartest place to choose to have privacy.
but the point is they're finally out and proud and just want to make the most of their free time together - they do deserve it.

Since this song by Future Islands came out, i wish for it to be in season 2. Like Simon listening to it in the bus. Obviously because of the title ? and slightly the lyrics ? Even the cover, i’m sure that’s the Hillerska window where they kissed for the first time.
“I met the King of Sweden,
Purples, violets,
You are all i need,
Nothing said could change a thing,
Where you go, I go,
Just say I’ll be,
Cause you are all I need”

Crying screaming throwing up with this knowledge right now.
So I decided I wanted to rewatch season 2 because I wanted to watch it with the english dub over it but anyways... I got to the party scene when Willie and Simon see each other for the first time since the break. Obviously they would choose a party song to play at, well, a party however, after it plays [serene music] to fade into the next party song. Something about this party song is different than the first one, and I wanted to see why.
So while looking up the second party song, I stumbled upon this article and I was so excited to share my findings.
It talks about: “[t]he best songs give you the opportunity to chill out and detach from the present. You easily find yourself lost in the zone or in the midst of an elaborate daydream.”
Tumblr media
I mean I don’t know about you but they’re definitely staring at each other like they’re the only ones in the room. As if zoning out or in a daydream.
They really thought of it all with the music and I love that.
Here’s the song btw.

I'm sure people have said this before but that look on Simon's face when Wille yelled at his parents wasn't worry or hurt or shock. It was plain fear. He saw himself in the future being the one Wille is yelling at, he saw the anger in his eyes and he saw his dad. He saw himself in the same place his mother was in when Micke left them. Especially with what happened with Sara and his dad, he realized people don't change even if they try to. He didn't recognize Wille anymore, the caring person he fell in love with but he saw the angry alcoholic he might become.

i am gonna headcanon that "i don't recognize you" is directed to sara and wille storms off because simon told him about the photographers or people being nasty towards him and wille leaves to END them.
you are welcome.
