“Wilbur, it is four fifty-eight! I checked the wall clock!” Ghostbur stops for a moment. “Wall clock. That sounds a little bit dramatic. How do-“
“Ghostbur, you need to hide.”
Ghostbur’s eyes widen (thank goodness, he’s finally looked away from the bloody mirror). “You called me Ghostbur!”
“What?”
“You haven’t called me Ghostbur since we met! Even though I’ve called you Wilbur a lot!”
Wilbur stares, dumbstruck, for a few seconds. Then he shakes his head. “Okay, I don’t care! You need to hide!”
“Hide? But I just got here.”
“Listen: Technoblade is coming.”
“Technoblade?”
“Yes, Technoblade. My flatmate.”
“You have flatmates?!” Ghostbur squeaks, holding his hands to his chest and shaking them excitedly. “I didn’t know you had flatmates!”
“Just one, and he doesn’t know about you. So come on, just hide!”
“So we’re surprising him?”
“Hide!” Wilbur explodes, racing forwards and pushing Ghostbur away from the mirror himself, paying no attention to Ghostbur’s surprised yelp.
Where to go, where to go, where to put him, where to go, where to-
“Bedroom,” Wilbur announces, steering Ghostbur in that direction. “To the bedroom.”
“The bedroom,” Ghostbur repeats, sounding awestruck.
Wilbur stops abruptly, grip tightening on Ghostbur’s shoulders in order to stop him as well. Ghostbur doesn’t complain. “No. Crap, we can’t go in there. Techno’s gonna go in there. We can’t… crap.”
“Why would Techno be going into your bedroom, Wilbur?” Ghostbur asks, turning his head around to make eye contact.
“Because we share.”
“Ohhh.”
“Crap crap crap crap crap, turn around.” Wilbur, still gripping Ghostbur’s shoulders, spins around, beginning to walk in the opposite direction. “Kitchen. We’re going to the kitchen.”
“The kitchen,” Ghostbur repeats, sounding just as amazed as before.
“You can get behind the island and stay there untilllll nope, not doing that.”
“Why aren’t we doing that, Wilbur?” Ghostbur questions, voice hitching just a little bit when Wilbur tugs him to a halt.
“Because Techno’s gonna go into the kitchen.”
“Why will Techno go into the kitchen?”
“Because he’ll want a glass of water.”
“Ohhh.”
Wilbur stands still, face tightening. “Crap. Umm…”
Is there anywhere else Ghostbur can go? Wilbur doesn't really think so, because he’s scanning as much of the flat as he can and he can’t see a single good place to-
Wilbur’s eyes widen. “I got it.”
“A place to hide?” Ghostbur prods, sounding freaking excited.
“This way.”
Ghostbur lets out a surprised sound as he’s pulled away from the kitchen and down the short hallway, pushed mercilessly along by Wilbur. “Where are we going?”
“Bathroom,” Wilbur replies shortly.
“Oh!” A pause. “Why the bathroom?”
“Because it has a door.” Wilbur walks just a little faster, not bothering to slow down when Ghostbur trips over his own feet. “And you can lock it.”
“Oh!”
~~~
Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?
I don’t know, most of my fic ideas I’ve written :0 At least partially.
That being said, I did come up with one AU during church that I like but haven’t really written yet XD
The premise is…
Modern AU (I have too many of these it is a Problem)
Sally and Wilbur are young—like twenty—and newly married
Sally is also pregnant aksvsksgjs
They have sucky families so as soon as they married they took off in a van and never looked back
They’re basically just traversing the country, no end goal in mind. They are wanderers *nods nods*
At some point they come across three little kids who ran away from home/a foster home/etc etc I’m still figuring things out
They’re all Teeny, like seven or something
Smol bench trio :)
So now Sally and Wilbur have to figure out what to do with these random kids
Sally is all “oh my gosh babies I am their mother now I have adopted them oh my gosh Wilbur we’re parents”
And Wilbur is all “kids ew”
Something something Wilbur starts to grow attached to the little guys something something found family something something
That’s kinda it lol!
Sidearm, One - Superboy, Zero!
Tumblr media
SUPERBOY #0 OCTOBER 1994 BY KARL KESEL, TOM GRUMMETT, DOUG HAZLEWOOD, DENNIS JANKE AND TOM MCCRAW
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC DATABASE)
Professor Emil Hamilton arrives at the Honolulu airport from Metropolis, ready for a relaxing vacation free of tense fights between super-heroes and villains. His luck quickly runs out however as he encounters Superboy and Sidearm in the midst of a brutal battle. Sidearm finds himself on the losing edge against Superboy and swipes Professor Hamilton's prosthetic arm. He attaches it to his Techno-Vest and turns the would-be weapon against Superboy only to discover that the Professor's arm is nothing more than a suntan lotion dispenser. Superboy quickly finishes the villain off with his tactile telekinesis, but keeps Sidearm's robotic arm as a souvenir.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tana Moon is present and catches the entire escapade on her mini-cam. Superboy and she race back to the KONA-TV station to edit the footage. While there, Tana overhears her co-workers speaking ill of her relationship with a sixteen-year-old boy. She goes back to Superboy's hotel room and engages in a brief moment of spite with Roxy Leech.
Professor Hamilton meets up with Superboy again and asks if he can examine him at S.T.A.R. Labs. Superboy and Tana fly down there and the Professor asks him about his earliest possible memories. He recalls waking up in the Cadmus cloning tanks and breaking free with the help of the Newsboy Legion. After securing his freedom, Superboy (calling himself Superman), met his very first super-villain – Sidearm. The two foes battled one another for the first time on the streets of Metropolis.
Tumblr media
After the examination, Professor Hamilton gives Superboy a tool designed to aid him in his crime fighting career – a pair of X-ray glasses. He immediately tests them out on Tana Moon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, members of the Silicon Dragons break a creature known as, Nanaue (King Shark), out of the Kulani Prison on the East side of Hawaii. Nanaue shows his gratitude by tearing into the men, ripping them to pieces.
REVIEW
Superboy’s origin remained pretty much the same after Zero Hour, we just got an extra scene from his origin. This is King Shark’s first appearance.
I don’t think Superboy really needed X-Ray glasses, I think that the Super-squad members benefit the most from having powers different from Superman’s.
In comparison with Dixon’s Robin, the themes of this book seem superficial. But that’s mostly because of the difference between Superboy and Robin (Tim Drake). They are two different types of teenagers (Tim would never use X-Rays like that).
Other than that the issue just moves around the supporting cast.
Grummett and Hazlewood’s style is iconic and usually works well in teenagers (unlike other artists that have problems drawing teenagers and toddlers, Grummett seems at his strongest when he is doing young people).
I give the issue a score of 8.
Back again with the costume designer talk -- Yes, I agree with the mischaracterization of all the characters in s6. It felt like last series' plots and endings had been thrown out the window. While watching s6, it felt like a different show all together. Everything that made every character unique was gone. Was there any reason as to why Edward was gone? Also, you stated that Matty likes Victorian and gothic culture. What are other characters' interests? I know Alo's are nature/punk; Rich: metal
Totally.  I think series 5 got a lot of backlash from older fans who no longer felt like the characters were relatable and were very vocal about that fact on Twitter, and so they decided to go completely in the opposite direction because maybe people would like that instead.  And I think that’s a real shame, because like I’ve said before, I think series 5 is some of the best, tightest writing that Skins ever did.  As far as Edward goes, I think he left to work on Secret Diary of a Call Girl. My impression is that he was trying to balance both jobs in 2010 and then felt like it was too much.  Katie Newham, who took over, was Edward’s assistant costumer, so I think he assumed that she would be able to just pick up where he left off, which ended up totally not being the case (and which is what makes me think she comes from a styling/costume construction background as opposed to a costume design one).
Canonically in terms of interests, here’s what the characters like:
Franky likes “making stuff,” The Catcher in the Rye, The Little Prince, Clockwork Orange, Graphic Novels – Dark Knight, Manga - The Rose of Versailles, Arcade Fire, Burial, Crystal Castles, Nirvana, Corpse Bride, Seven Samurai, Let Me In, Bad Santa, Spirited Away, Vertigo, Harold Lloyd!,  Dexter, The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, and taking photos.
Alo likes his weed, his van, his dog, Youth in Revolt, The Dharma Bums, The Velveteen Rabbit, Blitzen Trapper, Wolf Parade, Dog is Dead, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's, Fruit Bats AND Filthy filthy filthy filthy filth. Borgore, Excision, DatSikk, Funtcase, 16 Bit, Into the Wild, Grizzly Man, Where the Wild Things Are, East of Eden, The Jungle Book, Backdoor Sluts 9, The Hangover, Ninja Warrior, Party Down. Summer Heights High. Babestation. South Park. Family Guy, Lookwell, porn, and Victorian porn.
Rich is mostly defined by what he doesn’t like: he doesn’t like pop music, Simon Cowell, beautiful people, Radio 1, ITV, rapping, beatboxing, middle-class wankers, racism, sexism, Death Cab For Cutie, The Smiths, religion, Downton Abby, Tracy Chevalier, nu-metal, Empire magazine, Kerrang (wankers), drum machines (except when carefully used in Grindcore or Cybergrind – see Cutting Pink With Knives and Noism), synthesizers, Beth Ditto, public displays of affection, the city centre at the weekend, trance, techno, house, dubstep or any music made by skinny white people with computers, Kanye West, JLS, any show about fucking cooking or cooks, townies, chavs, narcissistic politicians, teachers, the song ‘Wait and Bleed’, the second solo on ‘Master Of Puppets’, artichokes, JK Rowling, any film or tv show with fucking vampires or zombies made after 1986, Glee, Glee, Glee, Glee, Glee, Glee, Glee. He does like metal (”ugly, angry music which you’d probably hate because you don’t understand it”), Atlas Shrugged, American Psycho, The Illuminatus Trilogy, Slayer, Napalm Death, Black Sabbath, Raging Speedhorn, Noism, Atari Teenage Riot, Venetian Snares, Behold The Arctopus, Godflesh, Cathedral, Sleep, Sepultura, Pantera, Soul Fly, Slipknot (2nd album only), PPK, Anal Cunt, Pig Destroyer, Jesu, Sunn 0))), James Plotkin, Earth, Brain Donor, Chrome Hoof, Hair Police, Mayhem, Wolves In The Throne Room, Burzum, Wolf Eyes, Ec8or, Dark City, Split Second, Blade Runner, Near Dark, Braindead, Halloween, The Thing, The Fly, and Alien.
The Killer Elite
Tumblr media
Cinema is the stuff dreams are made of, all our romantic reveries and daydreams come to life, a projection of the perfect world we'd love to be living in, full of excitement and happy endings. Or it would be if it wasn't for one little problem: not all our dreams are so wholesome. In fact some are downright scary. And nothing gets at the malign impulses lurking in our subconscious quite like cinema. It's something filmmakers have known since the earliest days; audiences love the vicarious thrill of illicit acts just as much as wholesome ones.
Tumblr media
Which brings us to the horror and fascination we have with those who disobey the most serious of all the Ten Commandments. As Ernest Hemingway once observed, ''when a man is still in rebellion against death he has pleasure in taking to himself one of the Godlike attributes, that of giving it. This is one of the most profound feelings in those men who enjoy killing.'' What he neglected to mention was the pleasure an audience often experiences, whether it's in the bullring or the cineplex, while watching this rebellion against death. It's a primeval experience, a ritualistic act, one that connects cinema to ancient rites and religious transfiguration. The cinematic killer enacts our hidden desire to kill and our hidden relief that the victim is someone else. They die for us, so we don't have to. They kill for us, so we don't have to. So whether it's the serial killer, the vigilante or the hitman, the killer is always with us, haunting our dreams, charming our worst instincts, hunting us down with remorseless determination. Here are five of the more memorable of cinema's most troubling and enduring residents.
Tumblr media
1. Speaking of Hemingway, his short-story The Killers was the basis for one of the great noirs of the 1940s. Two hitmen (Charles McGraw and William Conrad) arrive in the small town of Bedford to kill someone called 'the Swede'. As they move in on the local diner, their long coats and hats, the anonymous suit of the professional killer, add to the silhouetted menace. Inside they wait for the Swede to arrive, ordering food and talking to the owner and the one customer (Hemingway surrogate Nick Adams). McGraw and Conrad are impeccably hard-boiled here, barely-restrained violence embedded in every seemingly mundane exchange, voices oozing sullen condescension and contrariness. The levels of big city contempt Conrad gets into the line: ‘‘They all come here and eat the big dinner’’ is something else. They’re school bullies codified as angels of death, talking down to grown men (‘Town’s full of bright boys’), blood as cool as lizards. The film goes on to tell us why the Swede (Burt Lancaster) has ended up here but it starts with this recreation of the original story in all its noirish brilliance.
Tumblr media
2. We can't talk killers without talking Hitchcock. Killers were one of specialties and I could pick five clips from him alone. In the end I chose Bruno Anthony from Strangers On A Train. It's an incomparable performance from Robert Walker, the killer as psychopath, victim and charmer all in one. When Bruno stalks the young woman at the carnival Hitchcock invests the innocence of rides and signs (’Magic Isle’/‘Tunnel of Love’) with foreboding, all that darkness surrounding the bright fantasy world. We see the normal predatory desires of young men juxtaposed against the murderous kind following them. (Watch Bruno relishing the popcorn, appetites aroused by the prospect of the kill). But Hitchcock was always trying to implicate us in his murderous schemes, manipulating us to identify with killers, and here as Bruno murders the young woman Hitch lowers her body into our laps, presents her to us as a sacrificial offering in the dark reflection of her fallen glasses. We’ve got what we wanted all along, our true desires revealed. We’re no different to Bruno, really, his body distorted and demonic now in the visionary frame (within-a-frame) of those most Hitchcockian of glasses.
Tumblr media
3. It's hard to imagine the western without killers. The gunslinger, the outlaw and the gun-for-hire were staples of pretty much every western ever made. So an enormous wealth of ornery so-and-sos in black hats to choose from then. I've gone for an Italian take on this most American of genres. Surely few killers have ever had a cooler (or better soundtracked) entrance than blue-eyed Frank in Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West. We’ve just watched the McBain family brutally gunned down. One child remains, rushing out of the house, stopping abruptly as he sees the bodies of his family lying in the dirt. (This moment, the point-of-view camera rushing towards the door, then the close-up of the child’s face as Morricone’s heart-stopping music erupts is as thrilling as it gets). The mystery gunmen emerge from the brush, five faceless bringers of death, long coats billowing in the dust as they approach. Then the camera pans slowly forward and around to the leader’s face. It’s Henry Fonda, paragon of liberal justice in films like The Grapes of Wrath and Twelve Angry Men. Surely he won’t shoot the child? ‘What are we going to do with this one Frank?’ Frank spits on the ground, on our expectations, on his own reputation. Fuck that Henry Fonda. You think you know someone? ‘Now that you’ve called me by name,’ he replies. But this is just an excuse. Frank’s cold blue eyes have already told us what’s going to happen next.
Tumblr media
4. Not all movie killers are human, of course. Monsters, alien creatures and pissed-off animals have all menaced mankind over the years. Most of these can be explained by the unpredictability of nature or our instinctual fear of the unknown. Movies where we imagine being preyed upon by our own technology, on the other hand, are harder to explain. John Carpenter's Christine is a good example of this. In Stephen King's original book the car was haunted. In the film, however, it has no discernible reason for turning on humanity. It's just bad and it wants to kill us. Of course, it might be the culture that’s haunted, the dream of 50s America going sour in the 80s night, the eerie, mocking sound of doo-wop in the air. ‘You ain’t mad are ya?’ asks doomed bully Moochie Welch prompting the car’s headlights to explode like solar flares. Oh yes, Christine’s mad all right, mad as hell. (It’s a 1958 Plymouth Fury after all). Mad all the big-finned promise of the American Dream has been betrayed. Or maybe the murderous car represents the auto destruction of a society destroying itself, especially with machines. Techno-phobia was clearly in the air in 1983. Maybe Christine travelled back from the same future depicted the following year in The Terminator, where all our machines have finally risen up against us.
Tumblr media
5. And finally, a more recent phenomenon is the rise of the female killer. A staple of exploitation movies and comic books, the female killer has been gradually making her way into the mainstream as trash aesthetics and comic book sensibilities take over popular culture. Girls kicking ass is a win-win for everyone, female empowerment meets geek boy fantasy in an unholy alliance. Tarantino has something to do with it, as did TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, these killers tended to be wronged women on revenge missions or weak-armed but pretty girls not entirely convincing at running. But not always, and not anymore. Take the brutal elegance of Charlize Theron’s Cold War spy in last year’s Atomic Blonde. It’s still fantasy material, from bath scenes to lesbian sex, but the stunning, visceral one-take stairwell fight may well be a greater argument for equality than a whole library of feminist texts. The female body is no longer a weakness, the urge (and capacity) to kill no longer an unnatural consequence of some man’s brutality. Skill, stamina and force have equalised the contest. Hemingway’s assumption that only man could be ‘in rebellion against death’ by ‘taking to himself one of the Godlike attributes, that of giving it’ is old hat. There’s a new God in town now, and she’s taking no prisoners.
My Europe: Georgia fights over its future | Europe| News and current affairs from around the continent | DW
Georgia is the guest of honor at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, where from October 10-14 it will present its literature and culture to the visitors, book critics, authors, publishers and politicians that flock to the yearly German-language literary convention. In the lead-up to the book fair’s opening, journalist Krsto Lazarevic shares his impressions in a guest column of a country that is full of culture, contradictions and change.
Georgia is situated between the Greater and Lesser Caucasus mountain ranges, but it wouldn’t be out of place in the Balkans. A small country at the edge of Europe, its mountains and bad roads make it seem a lot bigger. People here are very hospitable; they make you eat until you’re fit to burst and keep refilling your glass of home-made schnapps. Georgia and the Balkans are pretty similar. The mountains in Georgia are a bit higher, the wine is better, and the hype rather bigger.
Ask them whether they consider themselves part of Europe and Georgians will stare at you in astonishment. Then they’ll pull a face, as if you’d asked them whether they wash their hands after going to the toilet: “Yes, of course. What do you think?”
Georgians are proud to be European, despite their geographical distance from Europe
To avoid any shred of doubt, every government building displays the European flag. It’s just a shame the EU doesn’t want Georgia because parts of the country are occupied by Russia. Georgians can hang out all the flags they like with the five-pointed stars on the azure-blue background: They may be participants in the Eurovision Song Contest, but their European patriotism is not enough for the EU.
Vegan restaurants and rotting meat
Describing a place as “contradictory” is not particularly original, but there’s no better word to describe the capital, Tbilisi. Coming out of a vegan restaurant in the center of town, you find yourself a few seconds later standing in front of a butcher selling pig’s heads and suckling piglets. The suckling pigs are stretched out under the hot sun. Bottles of ice in their bellies are not enough to stop a whiff of putrefaction from lingering in the air.
The old temple of Narikala sits majestically on a hill in downtown Tbisili
Three metro stations further on, an old textile factory has been transformed into a hipster paradise. Here you will find backpackers, artists and young entrepreneurs openly smoking joints outside. A few months ago the law was changed so that you can now smoke dope in Georgia without risking punishment. Getting caught with tab of Ecstasy can still land you in prison for up to eight years, however.
The capital Tbisili is also full of modern and adventurous architecture
Less than five minutes’ walk from the factory and its graffiti-covered walls, right-wing extremists are standing around outside a metro station, gathering signatures.
“What are you collecting signatures for?”
“Muslims are a threat, and we don’t want them in our country.”
“But there are a lot of Muslims in Georgia, aren’t there?”
“Yes, that’s why they have to leave.”
“But they’ve lived here for centuries. Where do you want to send them?”
“We don’t care. They’ve just got to go.”
As argumentation goes, this leaves something be desired. Nonetheless, the men have already collected a lot of signatures.
I haven’t met many Muslims in Georgia, but I have met a lot of Orthodox priests. They’re highly respected and enjoy a great many privileges. They don’t pay taxes, people admire them, and they’re apparently allowed to jump the line at the supermarket. After communism was thrown into the dustbin of history, religion filled the vacuum in Georgia. Criticism of Patriarch Ilia II, the current leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church, is tantamount to blasphemy.
Techno revolt
There is, however, another Georgia — one that bothers the clerics. Inside the Bassiani nightclub, drag queens are kissing on the dancefloor. One of them says, “This is freedom for a night. Outside is enemy territory.” Outside, openly homosexual people are frequently beaten up — sometimes by priests and police officers — and the perpetrators go unpunished.
Back in May, a minor revolution kicked off in Bassiani. The soundtrack of this revolution was techno. Old factory buildings and run-down Soviet architecture are the perfect surroundings for hardcore electronic music. In the middle of the night, hundreds of police officers with helmets and machine guns stormed the nightclubs Bassiani and Café Gallery. The next day, thousands of people demonstrated against the raid by gathering in front of the parliament building and holding a rave.
Almost everyone was surprised by what happened next. The prime minister and his government resigned and were replaced by others from the same party. This happened at the behest of the all-powerful oligarch and former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. The “techno revolt” was successful because the oligarch — the one who makes the decisions — agreed with the demonstrators’ demands: Western freedoms and a country more closely aligned with Europe.
What does ‘Europe’ mean?
This wasn’t just a raid on a couple of nightclubs; it was a culture clash between progressives and reactionaries. For the time being, the progressives have won. Georgians want to be part of Europe, but what exactly does that mean? For most Western Europeans, Europe represents liberal values. Those who took part in the techno revolt feel the same way.
But for most Georgians, and many Eastern Europeans, “Europe” signifies the Christian West, protection against Russia and money from Brussels. What they don’t want is the liberal modern world — the one where minorities, dissenters and people with alternative sexual preferences are treated as equals. At least, the majority of Georgians don’t want this.
That’s no reason to give up, though. Georgia is changing. The fight for a better future has only just begun.
Krsto Lazarevic was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina and fled as a child with his family to Germany. Today he lives in Berlin, where he works as a journalist and writes for various German-language publications.
NEW MUSIC 2017
The Orange Drop – The Curse of Kukaka Strictly speaking this was released late last year; an exemplary psych wig-out.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Nuclear Fusion Ever wondered what people mean by playing behind the beat? Well you can hear the two drummers play both behind and in front of the beat… in the same song! Mentally groovy!
Dead Horse One – Insight Again, released at the end of last year; a wonderful droning compressed psych embrace.
Miles Mosley – Abraham Man alive this band have chops, a fantastic piano-led soul/funk work-out.
Small Feet – A Winter Coat On Bare Bones I think Stockholm band-leader Simon is special singer/song-writer somewhat reminiscent of Neil Young; a song for lonely winter walks.
Loyle Carner – The Isle Of Arran Great rapper, inspiring lyrics, awesome performer, and one of the best samples all year; nuff said.
Sinkane – Telephone Subtle this is not; big dance grooves.
Ron Gallo – Young Lady, You’re Scaring Me Part White Stripes, part Two Gallants, part Rival Sons,; all rock n roll!
Tinariwen – Sastanaqqam The elder masters of ‘desert’ blues always hit the spot.
Strand of Oaks – Everything Punchy boisterous rock, with a few Elvis/Josh Homme ‘Huhs!’ thrown in for good measure.
All Them Witches – 3-5-7 Love this band; rolling heavy stoner rock grooves.
Chicos de Nazca – Never Ends Even woozier than the above, sun washed tequila haze guitars abound.
Great Ytene – Locus Post punk but also four to the floor rock, interspersed with, and descending into, gnawing nervous, and bordering on atonal, washes.
Cameron Avery – C’est Toi Crooning ‘standards’ love song authentically made modern; big baritonevoice, strings and cinematic appeal aplenty.
W.H. Lung – Inspiration! This is a stellar find, coming across as a mix up of Neu!, Talking Heads and Hookworms, exceptional!
Spoon – WhisperI’lllistentohearit Really good album but it is the propulsive drumming which is absolutely stand-out brilliant on this track.
Tamikrest – Wainan Adobat New masters of ‘desert’ blues in my opinion, this is a great up-tempo number.
Mount Eerie – Ravens One of the most difficult and most emotionally affecting songs I’ve ever listened to. Painfully sad and personal, as real as a portrayal of grief as I can imagine.
British Sea Power – Praise For Whatever A tale of two songs in one, with the first half given to atypical British Sea Power songwriting, before mid-way through out stomps an enormous bass lead groove wig out.
The Black Angels – Half Believing Modern psych kings back on form with this menacing yet mournful track.
Betrayers – Belong Here Raga No idea how I found this, but it’s a chugging bluesy number, although not sure it qualifies as a raga.
Matthew Logan Vasquez – Same Stomping, grooving funk soul rock.
Jane Weaver – Did You See Butterflies? Jane laying down those now trademark motorik bass and beats and ethereal vocals, this time concerned with butterflies.
Thurston Moore – Exalted A slowly unfurling melodic opening gives way to some molten guitar workout, before some almighty build and release crashes, and then comes the vocals; immense.
Ho99o9 – United States Of Horror Speaking of immense, these guys are fucking awesome; turn it up to 11, atop spitfire politically charged lyrics, but unlike anything else out there.
Endless Boogie – Back in ‘74 Boogie-tastic with perhaps my favourite lyrics of the year about a kite flying contest at a Kiss concert in 1974.
Pumarosa – Red Beautiful vocals float above a glorious melody and some seriously tight grooves.
Aldous Harding – Blend Sparse, confessional sounding, but altogether quite beautiful.
Minotaurs – Hipswinger Now I know I go on about grooves, but seriously, this is just groove-tastic, when it drops around 0:55, I mean, hell yeah I’m gonna swing my hips; with added brass.
Richard Dawson – Weaver This is a very unique album; it is a concept album, I’ll say no more; this was the track I returned to most often.
Hey Colossus – In A Collision Chugging rock which also manages to sound ominous and delicate at the same time.
Floating Points – Kelso Dunes Ambient instrumental post rock that really taps into a driving motoric groove, that borders on space rock!
B Boys – B Boys Anthem Arty, brash, tight rock song barely over a minute
Michael Nau – Good Thing The sound of this album is a joy, with warm tones and an obvious hiss akin to old records; this track is the most lovely of the lot.
Peter Perret – Living In My Head This is real climbing up the walls, in your head, blues-esque stuff; how Peter Perret has come back from the brink to deliver this kind of great music is anyone’s guess.
Broken Social Scene – Vanity Pail Kids Industrial pounding opening and a soaring indie chorus.
Holy Fuck – Chains Oh Holy Fuck; this is scary techno, which piles on the layers of noise and pounding beats until your ears bleed; it has it’s time and place, but I love it.
Public Service Broadcasting – The Pit Top band, with another great idea for an album; battle like drums and swelling guitar swirls and strings.
Dan Croll – Tokyo Classy pop song-writing with an absolute earworm of a motif.
Jesus on Heroine – Neu!comers A glorious bed of guitars and gentle swells.
Kacy & Clayton – The Light of Day Some 70s folk sounds, bordering on country vocals, warm yet clear.
Chris Forsyth – Have We Mistaken the Bottle for the Whiskey Inside There is that groove; reminds me a bit of a favourite from last year, The Wave Pictures, in the instrumentation, except this has more drawl.
LCD Soundsystem – how do you sleep? So fucking good; the definitive 101 on how to create a build in a song; ominous percussion, unnerving strings, savagely brilliant lyrics (perhaps a touch Bono-esque), which has drop after drop as each instrument is introduced, building to the brilliant titular pay-off; my only gripe is that James didn’t fucking play it live!!!
The Horrors – Something To Remember Me By Great band, great album, and an absolute banger.
The War On Drugs – Pain Guitar solos; hummable, glorious, soaring guitar solos.
The Killers – The Man This is the best song of the year (except LCD obviously); a groovalicious squelchy lyrical monster; it’s USDA certified lean!
Thee Oh Sees – Animated Violence The heaviest Thee Oh Sees (or whatever they’re calling themselves these days) have ever been; a giant slab of heavy sludge interspersed with bizarre guitar arpeggios.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Anthem for No State, Pt.III I consider myself lucky to be here at a time I can see Godspeed play live; they are truly peerless. This best track from their latest album comes across like an apocalyptic mariachi song, with strings, guitars, drums, building to a trademark cacophony before the subtle transition at 6:20 which carries you away; beautiful, mournful noise.
Neil Young – Captain Kennedy Not strictly new music, but from the unreleased ‘Hitchhiker’ album released earlier this year, this is Neil at his folky acoustic best.
Juju – And Play A Game A bizarre but wonderful song built upon one repetitive bass line, which literally has about a dozen genres stuffed in it; stick with it though, and from roughly 2 minutes in it is motorik gold.
Marilyn Manson – SAY10 Manson doing what Manson does best; that chorus is one of the hookiest things I’ve heard all year, and the guitars sound absolutely on point, just the right about of crunch.
St. Vincent – Smoking Section I think of this as Annie’s broadway showtune of sorts, like ‘A Man Needs A Maid’, but it’s more than that, it’s personal, mournful, and yes theatrical, but also has a wonderful send off.
Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile – Fear Is Like a Forest Much as I struggle with Courtney’s vocal delivery, she does sound great here, and with Kurt layering on the Crazy Horse guitars, it’s just a great track.
Curtis Harding – Ghost Of You Smoky soul and grooves.
New Candys – Tempera Reverb?! Can we get anymore reverb?! Solid psych under 3 minutes!
Baxter Dury – Miami Perhaps the best bassline of the year, slinky and disgusting at the same time, with the lyrics to match depicting a grotesque character amped up to 11, but absolutely delicious.
Baltic Fleet – A la Mortal I have a penchant for crescendo focused instrumental ambient rock, which is exactly what this is.
Pete International Airport – Flowers Of Evil Languid grooves buried beneath ambient textures and Robert Levon Been’s (of BRMC fame) trademark sing/sneer, but transitions into a gentle and quite beautiful outro.
Pretty Lightning – The Rhythm Of Ooze With a distinct whiff of Archie Bronson Outfit, this takes a blues riff and pushes it to the max.
Boubacar Traore – Dis lui que je l’aime comme mon pays Absolutely fantastic acoustic blues from the legendary Malian bluesman; it’s the same progressions and structures but with a vital energy and magnificent instrumental interplay which is as rousing as it is impressive.
Burnt Offering - The Cult of the Wicker Man, a great documentary on The Wicker Man, Firesign Theater - Weirdly Cool - A PBS pledge drive for WLIW, Clockwork Orange, *** Burnt Offering - The Cult of the Wicker Man.2001 Documentary on The Wicker Man. This is the dub of the PAL tape Dawn made for me. With commercials.Narrated by Mark Kermode Burrowhead,  Kermode at the stumps of WM #2, Christopher Lee, Seamus Flannery, Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Ingrid Pitt, Anthony Shaffer, Peter Snell, Robin Hardy, David Pinner. All Robin got out of Ritual was the hare. Pinner reads from his book, describing Willow’s dance. Not to buy into the paranoia about the missing footage but he seesms to be changing his tune somewhat in retrospect.
