Liv and her family just moved, and she's starting at a new high school in Harbour City. She opts to wear a button on her backpack that identifies her as queer (she's bi). As she meets other students, including Jake, his friend Aaron, and his girlfriend Layla, she worries their friendliness just indicates they're going to be extra mean to her at some point. But Layla has a safe space: the mall. Her mom works in an office there, and she eventually gets a job there, too, but it's one of those miserable jobs that requires her to wear a mascot uniform. Friendships develop. So does her crush on Jake, who has a girlfriend. And then things get creepy with Mr. Trent, her English teacher, as her friendships and her parents' marriage start to change.

I loved the ordinary, everyday sense this book had, and it took me right back to high school in a way that most YA fiction fails to do, at least for me. (I was much more a bookstore guy than a mall dude back then, though in the 80s there were still bookstores in the mall.) Highly recommend for YA collections.

About the Author

My 5-Star Review

The Killing Code is, incredibly, my first read by Ellie Marney. I know I have an older one of hers on my shelf, but haven’t read it yet (which I will be rectifying immediately!). I was thrilled to join this tour and see what all the buzz is about.

I love historical fiction books, and if you make it feminist *and* a murder mystery? I am so in! In this book we have “code girls,” the young women who worked night and day in the codebreaking brigade during the war, coupled with a series of gruesome murders of government girls that our intrepid group decide they must solve because the police are too blinded by their prejudices. The characters are all wonderfully drawn, and the romance is absolutely *chef’s kiss*. I had butterflies at the same time Kit and Moya did! There’s also loads of information on the actual codebreaking work the girls do, and it’s obvious a *ton* of research went into this book. Marney also addresses the racism, classism, and sexism of the era in America (which we all know isn’t just historical). I love the theme of found family, which is one of my favorite tropes, especially in YA. Top it off with some great mystery-solving techniques from Kit, Moya, Dottie, and Violet, and I can honestly say there is nothing I didn’t love about this book. I suspected I knew who the killer was, but I definitely wasn’t sure until right about when it was figured out, so that was a great ending for me!

I highly recommend The Killing Code to anyone who enjoys a great mystery and/or historical fiction. I really hope you’ll pick this up, and let me know what you think!

Stevie Bell is back to solve a murder in Nine Liars by Maureen Johnson. "Senior year at Ellingham - Stevie is adrift. Her boyfriend, David, is in London. Her friends are concentrating on college applications. She's just solved a big case and now there's nothing to distract her. David invites her and her friends to London to do a two-week study abroad. Shortly after they arrive, David's friend, Izzy, tells them about a double-murder from 1995 that her aunt knew about. Nine friends went out to a country estate for the weekend, but only seven came back. Was it a burglary gone wrong? Or is someone still lying? " This story spends a lot of time in Stevie's head. She's worried about life, love and future. Her hoodie choices are interesting and hilarious. It's nice to be in a different location like London and to visit a creepy mansion in the countryside. Johnson makes the Nine a group you want to hang out with (but not too long - too much for me) There are secrets and more deaths. You never know until the reveal who the killer is. There were a couple of clues at the beginning so if you pay attention you might catch something. This can be read as a stand-alone. There are references to previous books but not much is given away if you haven't read them. Not a fan of the very end. Stevie deserves better. A nice YA crime fiction story from Johnson. Hi Leigh, Please tell us a little bit about yourself. I grew up in a small town on the south shore of Eastern Long Island, but I recently traded in cold, damp, gray winters for the warmth and sunshine of Central Florida. I live with my husband, daughter and son-in-law, two sons, and four dogs. In addition to the two fantasy series’ I’m currently writing, I also write inspirational romantic suspense and cozy mysteries, work as a freelance editor, and homeschool my thirteen-year-old son. In my spare time, which is rare, I enjoy spending time with my family, walking (while taking pictures of scenery and wildlife), and reading. What is the first book you remember reading? I remember reading a picture book called So Big when I was around three. I must have read it often, because I can still remember some of the words. What are you reading now? I am currently reading Sarah J. Mass’s Throne of Glass series and loving it! What books have most inspired you? I’ve probably been most inspired by the Lord of the Rings books and the Harry Potter series. Losing myself in them inspired me to create worlds of my own. Do you have a special place where you like to write? I most often write in my library, where I can close the door and have quiet, a typical writer’s cave. But I love taking a notebook outside to write by the pool or the garden. It’s so peaceful. Where do the ideas for your books come from? Everywhere! I think of ideas all the time. I can be having a conversation with someone, and all of the sudden an idea will strike. Sometimes while I’m reading or watching TV I’ll get an idea. Since I write them down on whatever is handy at the time, I often have piles of Post-it notes, receipts, even napkins with story ideas jotted on them beside my computer. Is there anything about writing you find most challenging? The most challenging thing for me is getting that first rough draft down on paper. Other than that, the most challenging aspect of writing is finding the time to do so. What do you think makes a good story? I think the most important thing is to keep it interesting, keep the plot moving forward, keep throwing hurdles up for the characters. I tend to enjoy reading and writing stories with more action.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you? Yikes, that’s a difficult question. I am not at all adventurous, and yet my characters tend to be. Half the things they do, I would never even dream of. I think if I had to choose one, I’d say Ryleigh. Only because she is extremely maternal toward her younger sister, Mia. What makes your books different from others out there in this genre? I think Realm of Ice and Shadow is a bit different because it takes place in both a medieval-style fantasy world, with swords and dragons, but some of the characters come from the modern world. Mia, Ryleigh’s younger sister, is appalled when she realizes she can’t bring her cell phone to Cymmera with her. What’s next on the horizon for you? My current goal is to somehow get through writing the ten or so books I have contracted over the next two years. I have two more YA fantasies due to release next year. I enjoy writing cozies, and I’m hoping to continue with all four of my current series’ as well as adding one more which I’ve begun plotting. I also write an inspirational romantic suspense series, which I’d like to continue. In addition to that, I’d love to write a YA fantasy series about the seven deadly sins.
