I'm going to say one of the nicest things I can about a show about Star Trek: Lower Decks
They played us like a string quartet.
(Spoilers for 4x09: "The Inner Fight")
Lower Decks was sold a Star Trek/Rick & Morty mashup from the start. The first scene is a drunken Mariner literally harming her sidekick, Boimler. It practically screamed, "Mariner & Boimler a hundred tours! Double-u, double-u, double-u dot Mariner and boimler dot com!"
But of course, it also had Star Trek references. One of the earliest is "Who would win in a fight? Khan or Roga Danar?" Why would anyone else in The Federation know or care who Roga Danar is? And there's no imagination on display for the oldest referential paradigm, "Who would win in a fight?" Lazy. Bullshit.
Of course before the end of season one, Lower Decks showed us it was more than that. Boimler was gaining the kind of experience he needed. The story hinted very strongly that Mariner had been in Starfleet a LONG time. She wasn't a omnicompotent mary sue; she was a Commander with her own philosophy/trauma that compelled her to remain an Ensign.
It was a good show and it stood on its own. The references were used well to create interesting stories ("Twovix"), as part of the setting ("Hear All, Trust Nothing"), or just as a gag here and there ("Kayshon, His Eyes Open" and, like a dozen others). The references to the setting become the background radiation, remarkable in how deep a cut they really are (Vendorians?). I've described it to many people as "Star Trek, but everyone has watched Star Trek."
What it wasn't, was related to its namesake. "Lower Decks" was a surprisingly heavy episode about the younger members of the Enterprise crew and their perspective on the missions of galactic import that the viewer usually enjoys an omnisicent view of.
Lower Decks mentions our main cast don't have that omniscient view, but Mariner is a stone-cold badass, Rutherford was part of a secret effort to develop artificial intelligence, Tendi is the Mistress of the Winter Constellations, and Boimler--actually Biomler is no more exceptional than any other Starfleet officer.
So when we get our main cast and the senior officers into a room and they mention Nick Locarno, our thought is, "LOL, another reference. This one from TNG. Not particularly deep. LOL, Boimler is a Beverly Crusher fanboy. I guess it makes sense, they have the character model from the episode with Tom Paris. Clearly, Robert Duncan McNeil is happy to do some voice work. We'll probably make a reference to how much he looks like Tom Paris.
"lol"
Look, if you figured it out then pat yourself on the back. Me? I filed away another reference. I didn't realize that Nick Locarno was connected to the episode of TNG that was this entire series' namesake. The characters even say, "Who?" which is one of the first times they don't get a Star Trek reference. Because Nick Locarno isn't a part of the Star Trek universe they view with an enthusiastic fandomness; it's part of their dramatic history, whether they know it or not.
"ha-ha, I guess Nick Locarno is too deep a cut for the show that called back to Morgan fucking Bateson."
But whatever, A-plot/B-plot. Gags about Starfleet habitually rolling up to seedy establishments in uniforms while looking for information, which is subverted by Captain Freeman being fucking genre savvy (also, wasn't she going to be promoted before getting arrested at the end of season two? I guess getting framed for a crime was deemed to be not very 'admiral-able'). Mariner ends up in a cave with a Klingon taking shelter from a crystal rain.
The pieces are there. Mariner was an ensign during The Dominion War. Two to three years before The Dominion War, Wesley Crusher left Starfleet, our Nick Locarno expy Tom Paris was recruited to Voyager, and Sito Jaxa was an ensign.
And Nick Locarno is in play.
We could have figured it out! We're in the narrative and emotional third act of this series (Tendi gave us the "We'll always be friends" speech last week)! Everyone regular just sat in a room trying to figure out how to help Mariner; we were one fruit salad analogy away from an intervention with Dr. Migleemoo!
Mariner escapes from Cardassian interrogation chambers for fun!
But Locarno is just another TNG reference, like Beverly Crusher. Background radiation. The season's story arc is something original to Lower Decks, which it's proven it's unafraid to do at this point. The series has no relation to "Lower Decks"
And then they fucking hit us with it; Beckett Mariner knew Sito Jaxa. They were friends. Then Jaxa died.
That's Mariner's trauma (that and The Dominion War).
And I didn't see it because I came to see Lower Decks as a series that stood on its own merits as a show while calling back to earlier Treks in a light, non-committal way. And I credit that solely to the writing of the show which leveraged both of those qualities to make an entertaining show that I like before, but now respect.
Just amazing stuff.

i don't think i've discussed this on tumblr before outside of a few offhand mentions, but a while back i put together scraps pointing to the fact that all of dennis' erotic memoirs were written while he was in high school, primarily backed up by the fact that the two additional memoirs posted on the official paddy's pub blog as well as the other two that were adapted into a dvd extra, which either directly mention this
Tumblr media
(which makes him 16-17) and explicitly ends with him allegedly having sex with multiple adult women and a tiger, or implies it – dennis saying he drank 12 mugs of "mead" then later saying it was "brandywine", which is very much not mead while also specifically mentioning a non-alcoholic beer sign. the NJ location of medieval times opened in '90; he mentions going with A Companion (which was probably a date he drove there, not mac or charlie,) so I'd place this around the same time (16-17), after he got his license, but before he was legal drinking age.
when he first reads from his memoirs in 4x09, he narrates one that states "she was much, much older than me", and in the dvd extras he also recounts sleeping with a "matronly" japanese woman who also ended up being a "good deal older" than he had thought she was, and notably says, "nestled in her ample womb, i became a man" which has. certain implications.* in the second dvd extra he also says "i'm pretty sure i was her first" re: the random woman who he's picked up, which i'd say was originally written and intended to have taken place when he was significantly younger. obviously the reenactment has them both as 30-something yr old adults, but smut film also has him reprising the role of his 14 year old self, so it's not without precedent. he also starts off saying this is from chapter two, and the prior story was from chapter one, implying both are extremely early on in the memoirs
there's also the fact that charlie had stolen the memoirs for an unspecified length of time, long enough for dennis to comment on how long it'd been since he'd seen them. we can assume he likely stopped writing the memoirs entirely once he got his recording setup, which would've been around the time he moved in with mac somewhere around '98 when they bought the bar, putting him around 21/22. but the earliest memoir we know of dates back to 1991, when he was 14, then another confirmed to be in 1993/1994. additionally we only see him adding to the book when he's institutionalized (which is implied to have been some sort of hallucination, so it's arguable that even happened) and in the dvd extras (with a quill but no ink, so i don't know how that would've worked).
tldr; dennis sleeping with older women while underage was a pattern, possibly before klinsky, definitely after, and all but one of his memoirs seem to explicitly detail this abuse.
*i'm fairly certain this was his account of losing his virginity, and i believe this predates klinsky. if this truly is "chapter one" of the book, then it's more or less confirmed, but this memoir is also an interesting outlier because dennis actually has an emotional reaction after sex and goes back on his ~pinkie promise~ about not falling in love with her. just like with klinsky, she's portrayed as alluring (something that makes up for her age in dennis' eyes, also similar to the memoir snippet we hear him read in 4x09) and there's a heavy focus on her being motherly, but she is very much depicted as predatory as well (particularly via editing choices – clearly depicting her as a cougar – but also dennis' narration), with her seducing him, then Separating Entirely.

Anyway, I want to talk about this exchange between mostly Viren and a little Aaravos, and how I think it'll pertain to Callum and Rayla's dynamic going forward, since as most of the people following me probably already know, Viren-Aaravos Callum-Rayla is one of the most consistent four-way foil dynamics in the show. Where Aaravos pushes Viren further down that dark path, yet eventually is the reason Viren breaks away entirely (thanks to his fever dreams because Aaravos made him do dark magic in 4x09), while Rayla is already consistently trying to get Callum off of it, yet has inadvertently pushed him further down it in a few ways in S4 and S5. Quote about Rayla from TDP's head writer here.
With all that initial stuff out of the way, let's talk about it.
The first is that when the possession plot line comes back around Rayla will be called to make a Sacrifice, just as Viren was, but instead of being an innocent creature he has no attachment (which is the moral test Viren needed), Rayla's tendency to sacrifice whatever is personally important to her for the good of the world will be in direct opposition with well, not wanting to sacrifice Callum by any means necessary. And she, like Viren, will refuse.
And so will, I think, Callum, at least in a way. Let me explain.
By far the most interesting, indicative, and arguably important word in the exchange is "because," i.e. "I find myself here at these horrifying crossroads because I have followed a dark path." He's had to make this awful, difficult, horrible choices because of his prior choices; they all snowballed. They all became a slippery slope (as Sarai would say). He wasn't just randomly dropped into it. As his younger self says in his dreams, "Every step is a choice."
And now Callum has opened the door of dark magic back up again, and thereby left himself more vulnerable (presumably) to being possessed again in the future. A consequence because he did dark magic, and because he has a darker side (and potential darker path ahead of him). It makes me think more and more that Rayla is going to get stabbed / seriously injured when he's possessed again, and that will be what forces Callum to another crossroads: her death with Aaravos remaining trapped, or saving her life but setting his enemy free. A sacrifice he's willing to make and a sacrifice he's not.
This is furthered by the idea running throughout Callum and Rayla's dynamic of "They might save you or they might kill you" "Exactly, just like me" (book one novelization) where Rayla will save Callum because she refuses to kill him. But, given the way their dynamic is now interwoven with Aaravos and Rayla's own parallels to Aaravos, if Callum isn't going to kill him, yet, either... Then doesn't he kinda have to save him? (More of a reach, I know, but listen with the salvation and destruction theme the exchange makes more sense I swear).
And either way, Aaravos doesn't have to make the choice for him; Callum will play right into his hands anyway.

Fantasy Guide to the Debutante Ball
Tumblr media
In recent years due to the rise of Bridgerton, the concept of a debutant has piqued a lot of your interests. I've been answering a lot of questions about debuts so I've decided to compile everything into one guide for you all (y'all deserve a guide because I've not made many in ages cause I've been absolutely swamped. I'm going to try do more).
What exactly is a debut?
Tumblr media
A debut is the entrance of a member of the nobility, the gentry or the wealthy into the society of the day. They are being formally introduced to their peers and their future social groups. This milestone marks them coming of age and being able to finally take part in society as adults. Both boys and girls make their debut in society. But we will be focusing on the girls for today.
How to Debut in Polite Society
Tumblr media
Like many traditions, there are strict guidelines one must follow. Most debutants are at least 16, ranging to 16-20. They must be a member of nobility, gentry or a part of an influential family in order to participate.
In European tradition, the debutant is introduced to the Royal family by a female relative, who has already been presented at court. They are formally introduced to the court and society, making their bows or curtsys. Once this ritual has been observed, every debutant will hold a ball at their own home to celebrate their coming out. Every debutant will host a ball and attend other debutants' balls over the weeks of the Season. They would also attend different events throughout the Season in order to meet their peers and make connections. The tradition of the debutant ball has become a rarity in recent years though some still practise it.
In 19th Century America, one debut's by holding a ball to mark one's entrance into society. Peers, influential figures and other affluential people would be invited to witness the debutant make their entrance. In more recent years, a debut is made through International Debutante Ball. A debutante must be recommended by an established member of society or a member of the committee (usually a female relative) similar to the European tradition. However, in American tradition the debutants are escorted by her father rather than a female relative and once she's presented, she is escorted by a younger male escort. The American debutant does not get away without her curtsy however, she must perform the gesture known as the St. James Bow to attendees or in Southern tradition, the "Texas Dip".
What to wear to a Debut
Tumblr media
Everything, even down to what you're wearing, is set out in tradition. When debuting at a European Court, the traditional choice is a white court dress (though soft pinks and shades of white are permitted). The dress was short sleeved and had to have a train. The debutante wore long white gloves, a veil in her hair with three white ostrich feathers and jewels. Before the debutant has been introduced, she would hold her train over her arm and then let it fall when she has been presented. American debutants have a more complex colour scheme since they can participate in the ball for up to three years first time debutants wear wear white, post-debutantes black and on the third year they wear red.
I also really recommend watching Downton Abbey 4x09 because of how accurately it depicts the debutante's journey from before ceremony, the actual ceremony and post-ceremony.

it's the way tony and chris flip the script on the whole like. protege imitating his mentor, taking his place and outgrowing him (killing him too, depending on the genre). instead tony begins to copy christopher. tony sends chris away in 5x05 on a job and he uncharacteristically starts to use cocaine for stress relief and he seriously considers getting with his nephew's fiancée - not just having sex either, he tells melfi this whole bizarre fantasy he has of marrying adriana and starting a second family with her that he'd get "right" this time. (which is also curious because tony definitely knows adriana has fertility problems, but it's not a factor in this fantasy.) when melfi asks him if he intends to act on this, he says no, firstly because of how carmela would react, and then because it would destroy the work he put with christopher "after years of grooming him", and finally because he is aware it would be viewed as incestous. but it's something tony's thought about more than casually, it's a sort of reverse freudian dream where he replaces his nephew-son and takes his place as adriana's spouse.
and adriana as a person is part of it, but when tony tells christopher he and adriana were just chatting about chris... he's trying to put him off the scent, but he's also right. they were talking about chris right before things almost turned sexual. he comes up every time tony and adriana have a conversation, even if only briefly. the appeal of adriana is tied up in her connection to christopher. (which is interesting because christopher later takes up with juliana and repeatedly expresses discomfort over the fact that she had a relationship with tony, even though they ultimately never consummated it. the pseudo-incest of sharing a partner is part of the appeal to tony, but even the vague appearance of it unnerves christopher.)
tony does almost the same thing immediately after he kills chris a season later. he sleeps with christopher's mistress - even jokingly (?) asks her if he fucks like christopher - and takes drugs with her. tony rarely does drugs during the series, but he mentions to christopher, i think in 4x09, that he used drugs a fair amount when he was younger. i think part of what going on is an age thing - recapturing youth, the power trip of replacing the guy who was supposed to replace you (even if you were the one who said he would).
but i also think it ties back into tony's anxieties expressed in 1x01 that the perfect ideals of usamerican masculinity are being lost more and more across each generation. tony feels he is a corrupted, softer, and weaker version of the men who came before him, but he thinks christopher has taken it one step further. tony used drugs as a young man but he calmed it down; christopher developed an addiction. tony goes to therapy; christopher goes to rehab. tony talks about the mob in (barely) coded language to melfi, who at least has doctor-patient confidentiality; christopher confides in jt, his friend from aa, until finally christopher says too much and has to kill him. in replacing christopher, i think tony also feels as if he can rewind the tape, stop what he sees as the erosion of manhood, and by extension the mafia - which needs those ideals in order to exist.

Carl Grimes was suicidal:
S3-4a: After Lori’s death we see Carl slowly start to become more careless with himself i.e. running into the walker infested tombs by himself to save strangers. While the pre s4 timeskip is without conflict and with Rick spending more time with Carl as a father rather than leader gives Carl time to heal and be a kid again the beginning of season 4 quickly gets rid of that progress.
While Patricks death itself didn’t send him back on it’s own Carl wasn’t given any time to process it with having to help take care of the younger kids in quarantine, having to fend off the walkers with rick when the fence fell, before having his entire home destroyed and finding his baby sisters carrier covered in blood.
4x09: Couldn’t bring himself to shoot Rick when he thought he’d turned, just lay down and waited knowing full well what would happen. If Rick had actually turned Carl would be dead.
s5-6: Carl continues his reckless behaviour, sneaking out of the walls, confronting Ron on his own after he just tried to kill him, luring walker Deanna to Spencer. After losing his eye he starts showing clear self-worth and self-esteem issues with him not wanting to go to hilltop and
6x16/7x01: Carl was leaning forward in the lineup trying to get Negans attention and apart from Abraham was the only person sitting up straight and looking directly at him.
7x07: Carl had no escape plan, I don’t think he even considered trying to make one. He snuck into the sanctuary to kill negan, Carl didn’t care what happened to him as long as negan was dead. When talking to negan later that episode Carl tells negan he should kill him.
7x16: There is a deleted scene of Carl talking to Rick while they’re getting ready to fight the saviours where Carl asks Rick if he would have chopped off his arm in the clearing and whether he’s be able to right now because he might have to. Once again putting Alexandria and defeating the saviours over himself.
When Sasha was revealed to be dead Carl was the first to act, there were several people with pointing guns at him just seconds ago, who were still right behind him, while they were distracted by Sasha he’s still demonstrating a lack of concern for his own safety
s8: Carl sneaks off on his own to find Siddiq, telling no one he’s leaving let alone where he’s going, in the middle of a war let alone an apocalypse. He also shoots himself, yes he was bit but he still shot himself.
While Chandler Riggs was recently 18 at the time of Carl’s death, season 8 takes place in May 2012, less than 2 years since s1 placing Carl’s age at 14.
This isn’t very well organised so if anyone has anything else to add feel free to reply or reblog.

hello, it's me
i was wondering if, after all these years, you'd like to meet

hello, can you hear me?
i’m in California dreaming about who we used to be
Tumblr media
when we were younger and free
Tumblr media
i’ve forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet…
Tumblr media
hello from the other side, i must've called a thousand times… at least I can say that I've tried
Tumblr media
to tell you i’m sorry for breaking your heart

but it don't matter, it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hello, how are you? it’s so typical of me to talk about myself, i’m sorry
Tumblr media
i hope that you're well
Tumblr media
did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened?
Tumblr media
it’s no secret that the both of us are running out of time

so hello from the other side, i must've called a thousand times
Tumblr media
to tell you I'm sorry for everything that i’ve done

but when i called, you never seemed to be home

I have so many spncarfucking comic ideas, it's a blessing and a curse. It's so hilariously easy for one (me) to take spn's original dialogue and scenes and twist it to spncarfucking in one's (my) head, but the real hardship is then one (me) would have to make them. A spncarfucker creator's eternal struggle. One day tho, they will be made.
Early Season Examples: 1x19- Dean trying to convince Sam to fuck a car so he wouldn't be so grumpy and repressed all the time.
1x20- Instead of John criticizing Dean over the non-existent rust on the wheels, it's for not cleaning out her tail pipe properly after use.
1x20- Instead of Sam and John fighting not over walking away from hunting, it's about John not treating the impala right and abandoning her for a younger taller truck.
2x01- John giving Sam a grocery list of things to get so John can carfuck the impala one last time before making the demon deal. Azazel calls him out on it.
4x01- Sam calmly tells Dean that he wasn't douching up the impala with the ipod jack but trying to keep her happy with toys since Dean was gone and couldn't satisfy her.
4x03- Dean discovers Mary and her parents also fucked cars and Mary talked John into trying it for the first time with a VW van, but Dean talks him into the Impala.
4x09- Sam telling Dean about the car roleplay him and Ruby did
4x14- Sam and Dean fighting over the siren, carfucking, and letting Ruby ride shotgun in the impala while Dean was dead.
4x17- Sam's confession towards the end of the ep about his dreams, but the dreams are more about watching his brother carfuck Baby more than the hunting monsters.
4x17- Zach undo's his whammy on Dean. Dean gets pissed that Zach indirectly caused him to cheat on Baby with a Prius.
5x04- Dean pissed at future!Dean for leaving Baby in ruins and not knowing who they are anymore.
5x08- Impala!Sam.
I've got so much more, but like this is long enough. But, one day I'll get to all of them. One day.

M*A*S*H - Viewguide, S4
Are you interested in the long-running anti-war situation tragicomedy M*A*S*H (1972-1983), but there are simply so many asterisks and so many episodes?
Well I can’t help you with the asterisks, but nor can I help myself: I started watching all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, and bringing back for you my viewing selections, chosen for The Qualities.
— — —
In which we lose two of the three top billed cast members and gain two new ones, a couple of the regular writers and directors also seem to cycle out, and in the ensuing slightly confused flooding of our previously steady stream, Frank is sinking like one of those water-logged stumps, someone seems intent on trying to keep Margaret from also getting dragged down by him through the approach “she’s just not around again, idk,” Radar is somehow swimming up-stream and now seems several years younger than he was when we started, and Alan Alda is piping up more and more to point out the banks and steer us into deeper waters, and if he’s also maybe altering our course just a little, let him.
Meanwhile, TIMESCALE: we learn in the opening scene that the first three seasons have timelooped for "just over a year” :) elated with this data :))
And so we enter M*A*S*H, Part Two:
M*A*S*H - Season 4 Recommended sequence
4x01-02 ‘Welcome to Korea, Parts 1 and 2' - Acting CO Frank Burns really thought he was going to get to mold their new doctor Hunnicutt into a Mini Frank, but did not account for Hawkeye Pierce, on a desperate scramble to the airfield, to pick him up while still reeling and reckless from having just lost his best friend, and in this, one of the most riveting figures BJ has ever encountered. TOO LATE, he got his hands and damage all over him already! Anyway I helplessly detailed exactly what goes down in these if you are BJ Hunnicutt (BJ…Hunnicutt) in my increasingly disclosing notes, so stay tuned for that.
4x04 ‘It Happened One Night’ - Not to be a weirdo and skip to Colonel Potter already being here, but this one is really good. This is one of my quiet favorites of the season. And I think this works so much better as the one to follow the two-part premiere actually. Hawkeye and BJ aren’t quite in sync yet—this is accurate. Hawkeye and Margaret continue to get more in sync—this too is accurate. Lots of Klinger (LOTS of Klinger) (hirsute…), Radar being so irritated with the chaotic bumbling of the new private is so funny, and you’re still getting a good impression of our small, forthright new CO: regular Army, but you know what? Maybe…our regular Army. And that could rule actually. Oh: AND EVERYONE’S SO COOOLD. My fav-orite!
4x05 ‘The Late Captain Pierce’
BJ: “For he was a jolly good fellow…” Hawkeye: “I was much too young to die.”
A clerical error renders Hawkeye legally dead. M*A*S*H x Catch22 for real, murder me. And, five episodes into the new season of an episodic sitcom and they were still letting Hawkeye be torn up over those he’s lost, and have this wholly new emotional register with his new friend BJ, way longer for both than I’d thought they would let him have. But y’know, Alda got to direct this one.
4x09 ‘The Kids’ - Great TV show setup: learn things about the characters by how they read bedtime stories to dislocated orphans. If you guessed, “oh yeah, and that’s gonna create the moment where Hawkeye finally lets himself start to fall in love with BJ,” you are a better guesser than I!! But man what a good choice. Alda. (Back in the chair.)
4x10 ‘Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?’ - I just adoooore Dr. Sidney Freedman. Any scene with Sidney in it: a balm. Here he returns for the episode in which the 4077th gets a wounded soldier who says he’s Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, Radar is now twelve.
4x16 ‘The Price of Tomato Juice’ - I was trying to describe the format of these kinds of chain of wants & favors episodes to Jody and she was like, oh, you mean it’s like the Deep Space Nine where Nog explains The Great River of Commerce. Yes exactly.
4x19 ‘Hawkeye’ - They gave the rest of the regular cast the week off and just had Hawkeye monologue with a concussion for 25 minutes, ambling around a Korean family’s farmhouse with surprisingly disconcerting candy apple red syrup creeping from his temple, live-narrating his own self-diagnosis, doing snippets of musical numbers, and just generally rambling as he tries to keep from fainting before his rescue arrives. A lot of oscillating between being about to keel over and quashing down his fear to put on a blithe front for an audience who can't even understand him, and a beautiful cow. In short, crafted for me special! I actually made this meme to explain to a friend why I was so undone by The Fabelmans (dork alert), but the thing is, it always worked because it was also about what it's about:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4x21 ‘The Novocaine Mutiny’ - Frank brings Hawkeye to trial for mutiny. He could, wildly, literally hang for this, but most of all: you bet there’s a Rashomon (scream).
4x25 ‘Deluge’ - I don’t know what to call these exactly, but they tend to do a couple of them a season. Usually, not always, they’re letter writing shows, with the letter narration forming the framework instead of an overarching plot, letting them do just a sequence of scenes somewhat related. Bullet point stories. This one however the scenes are intercut not with something else from the world of M*A*S*H, but actual historic footage from the period, in easily the most artistically experimental episode they’ve done yet. It’s all jarring juxtapositions of a very long surgical run with what was on TV back at home in 1952, with a jarring editing rhythm to match, which wasn’t fully working for me and then soooo working for me. Bit of an ‘O.R.’ echo, but so much odder and dreamier, in like a David Lynch way, and I think the sensation is well worth the list.
4x26 ‘The Interview’ - Anndd then you do this one next, which follows on the previous one almost like a brief bit of serialized storytelling. It’s all black & white and everyone is just being interviewed by a TV journalist about how they are (not) getting through it. At one point I paused to write this and let out a shaky yelp at discovering I was only 9 minutes in. At another point I had to pause to create my own break where there would normally be one just to let out mooore shaky sounds at an image Father Mulcahy had just described that will be lodged in my mind for the rest of my actual, actual life. Happy Season 4 Finale!!
Season 1 • Season 2 • Season 3 • Season 4 • To be continued

Rambling thoughts as I rewatch 4x09 “Road Kill”
I thought it would be a younger version of herself from the promo & Natacha’s interview before the episode aired – BUT – I FUCKING LOVE how they did it. This is my favorite of all the ‘begins’ episodes from both 9-1-1 & LS
“Is that Marjan?” x3 – trying to figure out if the 2 Paul ones were the same one and the edited it weird or if it was in the script that he said it twice
You helped with that Tumor cake Marj.
I love that he doesn’t believe that she sold the bike & got $200 more.
So not subtle about the party – but these people are so happy to get her back and I love it.
Acts of service really is her love language
I love that the girl made it out of her relationship – I also love how they showed her doubts – that was so real. It isn’t easy leaving bad relationships – but in the end she overcame her fear – with the help of Marj.
The season of sisters – so funny. I am trying to figure out who is next – We know that Grace has 2 (Sierra’s irl sisters), Carlos has 2, and Marjan has at least 1.
As someone that performed in those 4-hour recitals – I agree -they get long and tedious – but can be absolutely adorable and hysterical at the same time.
This is actual a pretty decent spread – but yeah – that is kinda a lot of canapes
You are ALWAYS extra
They are so fucking adorable – they definitely dodged an LED bullet
Once again – they kill it with the music.
The thing about the red car – my guess is from Marjan’s memories – did the Mom crawl out of the car and die, then the father moved to the passenger side of the car? Because Marj was in the back on the drivers side behind her friends Dad. The placement when adult Marj checks them out confused me.
This is her second accident in 2 seasons
How long did she have to sit with her dead best friend and his parents after their accident?
I love her origin story – so much of who she is, why she is who she is, is so beautifully consistent with her character the last 3.5 seasons
We learned so much new info about her
Mateo gets very emotional when the people he loves are in distress – he showed us this in the first season when they found out Owen had cancer, it has continued through out the seasons. It makes sense that he would be as worked up as he is.
Good thing Grace is always at work when they need her
Kinda find it funny that the cop stays at the house while 3 firefighters go investigate.
Sucks for Rick – getting murdered for being a nice guy.
How does this cop NOT see the dead body or blood?
Grant did not cover it up that well
I also thought Grant was for sure going to kill the cop when he started walking back to his car.
The makeup department did an amazing job
TK reliving the events of who knows how long ago – this timeline taunts me daily – from Carlos’ kidnapping and now this
The acting this season has been phenomenal
“I hate to ask you this, but was she the victim or the perpetrator?” Carlos Reyes – I mean, it’s a fair question.
How the fuck did this dude bail himself out? Was the bail amount $5?
I think it is interesting that Marj was called Mouse when she was younger, but how that accident changed how she presented herself. She took her BFF’s mom’s advice and lived her true self – not as someone that was remotely quiet or shy.
This cop wasn’t at all suspicious of this dude? Like didn’t even bother running the plates?
She lost so much blood – I love that she used some of it to put up the ‘126’ on the wall.
Get a sister – Get a killer = season 3 of LS
This whole episode is so well done
“That girl can’t just see the sites like a normal tourist?” Paul ‘exhausted’ Strickland
Of course Grant borrowed his dad’s RV for a trip – guess he just never said how long that trip would be.
Survival instincts are crazy
“Are you a liar?” – child Marjan to Adult Marjan
His constant use of the word ‘friend’ gets super annoying after like the 3rd time he said it.
It is awesome how they had every part of the 126 (with a late cronut assist from Tommy) helping to find Marjan – and similar to 4x04 – Marjan saved herself – but had help in finishing the job
So I guess it is: get a sister – get a killer – save yourself from the killer – your family assists you getting medical help
The scene in the tunnel – The terror in Marjan’s eyes was something I FELT. Not just saw – but FELT
Flare to the neck – nice way for an abusive killer to die
Kinda happy it was extra painful, even if it was quick
Off topic – but I have been watching A LOT of Stranger Things – so the scene of Paul, Judd, and Owen all being on their radios made me laugh and think of the kids/teens (mostly the never-ending story scene)
Now Kylie will never have to look over her shoulder for her abusive ex again.
Owen’s face at the truck after they find the old man’s body – perfect expression of fear and grief.
I am so glad they cut the Nanteo scene in the hospital
Give them development, but this wasn’t the time
Super cute TK sleeping on Carlos
I do hope that they do something with what they have been sorta building up for them
SO FUCKING OVER THE DIET/NEGATIVE FOOD REFERENCES
None of these people do well with R&R – not a single one of them – But I think Grace and Owen are the worst
“It could be that our daughter just don’t got no interest at all” Judd Ryder – good luck buddy
“Who is here for Marjan Marwani” EVERYONE
“Why you guys first? Fine just don’t take too long.” Mateo being the youngest brother.
Another great quotable episode
I did love the reveal of it being a younger Marjan, showing us her parents
This was such a strong episode – from top to bottom, every member of the cast & crew really gave it their all – and it shows.
She looks so small in that hospital bed with her found brother & adopted dad, then her smile when she gets the flowers from her parents – such a great ending scene.
Looking forward to the rest of the season – It just keeps getting better.

I made this post before about the trans episode of The Good Doctor but that was on season 1, I'm on season 4 now and there's another one! Like last time, I loved the ep, and I will give you context:
The episode 4x09, "Irresponsible Salad Bar Practices" (title unrelated to the patient btw) includes the case of Rio, a trans man with a brain tumor. He is an adult (unlike the trans character of the last ep), has been on T for a while and has had top surgery (the actor, a trans man himself has lovely top surgery scars, but i digress). He's also in a relationship with a cis gay man, that's important to know.
The episode starts with him doing a check up, where Dr. Reznik asks him for his gender and pronouns to update the hospital records cause "Software clearly needs a trans update." Ok, the important bit is that Rio need surgery to remove the tumor. The tumor has grown rapidly, they think because of high levels of hormones... Rio is pregnant.
This all is handled nicely and respectufl, not once he is missgendered, not once they assume any of the patients decisions because of his gender or his pregnancy. Except fo Shaun (surprise!). As always, because he's a stereotype of an autistic man, he asks very inappropriate and offensive questions that are none of his business and are not medically relevant. Just because he wants to understand.
This annoys me, but I can't really complain cause it's also what I like the most in these types of episodes. Shaun genuinely wants to learn and be better.
Anyways, he asks Rio's boyfriend, Eli, if he "considers himself gay" even though he "has vaginal intercourse". Eli answers with some restraint (I would have punched him, who the fuck cares, Eli isn't even your patient. But anyways...).
Later on in the episode, Shaun says the following line when talking to Eli (which saves the entire thing imo). "I read that cisgender people often reduce transgender people to their genitalie, and that that is offensive. Did I do that to you and Rio? I'm sorry."
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to add the rest of my favorite line! Shaun says he's confused about Rio because he has gone through hormone replacement therapy, he has had top surgery but now "he's choosing the most female act" and Eli, very calmly responds "it's not female if Rio is doing it" which is exactly what I said to my mom one time when there was an interview on tv about a pregnant trans man. I love that line. Pregnancy is only a female act, when females do it. Anyways, Shaun looks taken a back for a second and just answers "yes" and then continues to talk about how Rio must have dealt with prejudice, and he relates to that.
This proves once again that Shaun wnats to learn, cares about learning, and he can do it on his own. He didn't harrass his trans patient with questions (at least after realizing he didn't like that). He went and did research on his own, realized his mistake and apologized. That's so important to me! Because none of his offensive remarks, on this episode or back to the one in season 1, none of those comments where from a place of hate. And I do want to bring up this point again, that his ignorance about trans issues has nothing to do with his autism. His bluntness and need of logical understanding have (because, again, he's a stereotypical cookie cutter autistic writen by allistic people). His ignorance has a lot to do with the fact that this man was homeless for a while, didn't have a supportive enviroment, i don't really know what his school life was like, but he lived in a small town, his "mentor" was his younger brother, who died when they were kids. It's not like he had many oportunities to open his mind to the wonders of the trans community you know?
Once again, not defending transphobia or justifying anything. Just sharing my humble opinion about the lowest rating episode of the whole show so far, according to IMDb (although that has everything to do with the reviews being like "this woke series, why do you talk about trans issues and racism? this is supposed ot be ESCAPISM not a documentary" as if that was a valid review lol).
The episode also included a case to do with racism, which I also really enjoyed and think it was handled nicely. But alas, I don't think my opinion is too important as a white dude who doesn't know much about racism and the shit that black people go through, specially when seeking medical attention. I can give my opinion on trans issues all I want, but that's as far as my experience goes.
Btw, Rio had his surgery, is perfectly fine and soon to be a dad with his lovely soon to be husband Eli :')

After the new short story drop... forget about Ezran and Callum's arguments, HOW IS EZRAN GOING TO REACT TO RUNNAN'S BOW W/RAYLA????????????
I am deeply intrigued by the potential of Callum finding the bow (the literal weapon that spilled their father's body) and subsequently willing to work in tandem with Rayla wielding it in S5 vs Ezran finding the arrow - a symbolic representation of the murder - and well, breaking it under his boot. (Garlaath's merciless boot of crushing, anyone?). It makes me wonder if an old theory I had, of Runaan's remaining binding on his arm providing a tether to Ezran, may come into play with both brothers aiding in freeing the Moon fam, but we'll have to see.
I admit, I had assumed that Ezran's lack of immediate long term proximity to Rayla - thereby not having to interact with Runaan, really, more than he'd want to, in comparison to Callum, who will presumably be his son-in-law someday - would mean that Ezran would have an easier time with Runaan than Callum would... but in some ways, Runaan took more from Ezran than he did from Callum. Runaan took not just Ezran's last remaining parent, but the only parent he'd ever known, and one he was fully comfortable with. He was far younger, so Runaan took his childhood, and saddled him with kingship from age 9 onwards, which... yeah, be pissed as hell, baby boy. (You could argue that Runaan and his patterns / assassin-y encouragements that were passed down to Rayla are also what took her away from the boys, particularly Callum, for two fitful years, but that's a post for another day.)
Ezran is also crueler, I think, or at least more outwardly angry, towards Rayla in 2x08 than Callum is to her in 2x03 each time the secret comes out. Part of this is I think because Callum already had an inkling/basically knew and just didn't want to accept it (and was older) whereas Ezran was blindsided. I've long thought that Ezran would have good reason to be angry at Callum and Rayla, still, for not telling him in S2 (it was understandable, but also fucked up, and could easily lead to a breach in trust there, however subconscious).
I think Ezran will have an easier time understanding Rayla's side - he's friendly with Zubeia, who ordered the hit and who he's gotten to know as a Person ("Zubeia is gentle and kind and funny") - because no matter what Runaan did, he's still her father, and well... Ezran sure as hell misses his Dad, too. Rayla will also, most likely, be against any sort of dark magic risk as well, so they're more aligned there.
Ezran going back to stomp the arrow reminded me a lot of Claudia tricking Rayla in 4x09, which is to say - younger, typically more passive siblings who were forced to be more active in uniquely taking up the heavy burden of their father's powerful mantle, while their older brother got off comparatively scot free? Yeah.
I think Ezran could have a harder time with Callum's involvement because 1) this man took their dad away, and Callum has no personal relationship to Runaan (although I'm sure meeting Ethari, which Ez has not, impacted him) and 2) the anger and fear at Callum being willing to risk himself as well could be a wedge. Even maybe getting at "You're going to risk yourself for Rayla when you nearly died last time" mixed with "You're not going to listen to me when I've been right here the whole time?" because well - she did leave both of them. And if they make plans or discuss the coins and wait to bring Ezran into the loop? It's their joint secret keeping in S2 all over again, and he has every reason to be hurt about that.
But yeah as someone who's wanted Ezran to have Big Messy On Screen Feelings explored in depth for a while, a possible "Ezran feels hopeless/angry" arc, and a Broyals conflict episode/arc (for those sweet Viren-Harrow parallels) I am thrilled. This is everything I could've ever wanted for him tbh
