"The concept of love is of course prominent in Christianity, so even as a kid being raised in a religious environment . . . Machete wasn't completely alienated from it. But it has always been a nebulous, unperceivable and unattainable thing for him."
I love that you could replace "love" with "God" or "divinity" here and it would still work. And in that way it matches the way I've been perceiving their relationship as Vasco granting Machete a kind of holiness he didn't think living people could have

Fan art of @i-drop-level-one-loot ‘s darling Kirtch <3
He’s just such a cutie. I’m sure he would take better care of his books, but consider this one a dog-eared copy from his childhood🪲

ascensions lian
one of my favorite things about rereading tgcf is finding little bits of info where MXTX showcases how crazy strong xie lian is. like in the PROLOGUE we learn that if people trying to ascend fail their Heavenly Tribulations they either die or are (socially? physically?) ruined. like, nevermind the rigors of cultivating to ascension, the act of ascension itself is lethally dangerous.
and XIE LIAN
this motherfucker ascended for the first time IN HIS SLEEP. the second time he was so busy pummeling bai wuxiang that he didn't even notice it!!! what the hell!!! what the hell is this guy on and how do i get some

ive seen your “wouldn’t be the first time i got beheaded” comic on like 7 separate occasions and feng xin’s face gets me every. dang. time 😭
LOL thank you. the different reactions to Classic Xie Lian Antics is so funny to me. feng xin is so openly horrified and disturbed every time xie lian talks about that kind of stuff. i guess he thought that xie lian would have improved his situation by now (the last time he saw him was bricklaying at the start of his second banishment).

I guess I can't really get behind cas saving dean from hell as a destiel win, or lines like 'you don't think you deserve to be saved', because. this is not a point at which cas is doing because he believes dean is good and loves him or anything but. he saves dean because that's heaven's will. when he reminds dean that cas, and heaven, are who saved him in early s4, it's not him really saying 'you're a good man', it's a debt that he is using, pretty explicitly, to get dean to do what heaven wants. even the handprint reads like... ownership, in a way.
cas is complicit in heaven's manipulation of dean after he's pulled out of hell. that's what makes his rebellion later powerful, because this is an angel who believes in heaven so strongly that he will look into the eyes of the righteous man he saved and tell him that if he doesn't do what he's told, he will throw dean back into hell.

Underrated moment of joy in this season: The bleating ravens.
I swear my heart grew three sizes in that moment. Cuz I knew, I KNEW, that there was obviously no way Crowley was ever going to hurt a kid. I wasn’t sure how he was going to get out of it but I was positive he’d figure something out.
But the thing is (and I’m almost ashamed to say it) I completely bought the destruction of the goats. I didn’t love it, but I figured it fell into the same ~morally gray~ category Crowley so often does.
But turns out that demon is too kind-hearted to even harm a herd of goats! And that fact makes me MELT! Crowley is so soft and good on the inside, and he has such a strong sense of right and wrong, it kills me.
I want to wrap him in a blanket and give him a little kiss on the forehead. It’s what he deserves!

Shi Qingxuan's teeth were chattering. "I want to die.."
"Dream on," Ming Yi responded coldly.
There it was again, that familiar frosty tone of voice and those equally icy, cruel words. It was the same as it had always been, but now it took on a completely different meaning. - TGCF
I'm sure this has been pointed out many times, but when re-reading I have been DELIGHTED by MXTX's slight of hand with the He Xuan character. The cast and the reader both presuming tsundere cliches & writing off any derisive and adversarial statements as moody, harmless defensiveness instead of sincere malice. The guy told u a thousand times he's not your bestie!
👏 👏 👏
