ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...

the visual inspiration for this was a combination of Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs and also Bernardo Cavallino's The vision of St. Dominic receiving the Rosary from the Virgin

this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.

you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.

also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.

A couple of weeks ago I bothered to spend the time to write out Wukong and Macaque’s leitmotifs because I noticed that they were very similar, differing primarily in that they weren’t identical, but up to a certain point were almost major vs minor versions of each other’s themes (pictured below)

Again, you can tell they’re not identical on paper, but to the ear they sound very similar, and it’s obviously not a coincidence that they start off with the same rhythm. You apparently can’t add more than one video to a post, so I’ll put the Macaque bit that I clipped and just say that I got Wukong’s from the end credits.

The similarities are notable, again, featuring Wukong in a major key and Macaque in minor key. (The version I wrote out is not in the same key as the clip; it was easier to compare them on paper when I wrote them in the sameish key.)

I’m no music analyst, I just took a year of the required colleges courses for music and switched away from it and still have everything ingrained in my head, so there’s not anything in particular I’m trying to say here, I just go bananas for it every time I hear either theme :))

Edit: I drew this out on FireAlpaca and forgot to mention that earlier. It’s not particularly relevant but I do think it’s funny

Summer 2023 checklist

Ask a friend for a book recommendation and then actually read it.

Go to your local library. Get a card. Attend 1 event they have. (Maybe see if you can borrow the book your friend recommended.)

Go to a park or outside space in your town that you haven't visited before.

Get a cheap pack of crayons, color pencils, or other cheap art supplies. Sit outside. (Maybe that park you've never visited!) Draw something badly. Enjoy how bad it is.

Get an outfit that feels about 20% skimpier and more revealing than you are comfortable with. Wear it. Eat something frozen. Feel cute.

Bake some cookies. They don't have to be pretty. Just follow the recipe.

Does your town have a Pride celebration? Go to it! (If it doesn't, what's the nearest one? Go!)

Find a farmers market. Buy something baked.

Get sidewalk chalk. Draw silly doodles outside your house. It's OK if it looks like a child did it. Your neighbors will like it.
