Chat with my inner child.
You don't always have to smile or laugh politely to make others feel comfortable. Know your natural (frowny) resting face is enough - it is glorious; magnificent.
You don't always have to explain yourself when/after saying "no" to something.
You don't always have to be the one to speak to fill awkward silences or gaps in a conversation. Listen to the spaces in between the words. This is where you will find the Truth. Let the conversation unfold as it does. Observe.
You don't have to hug or kiss anyone if you just don't feel like it (that includes sexual activities as well). Your body is your body is your body. Also, you are so much more than just a body...remember that. More than a mind. You are the entire universe in one soul. Know this. Embrace this. Love and honour your mind-body-spirit(soul).
If you want/need something, ask for it, politely, and remember not everyone deserves an explanation as to why you want/need that thing. Sometimes, however (depending on who you are asking), it helps to put things into perspective.
You don't have to apologize for not answering someone's text/call etc. immediately, even if it is usually normal for you to answer quickly. If you feel that you don't want to answer, maybe you shouldn't. Be patient with yourself. Ask yourself if that person may not deserve an answer. You are the only one that needs to understand why. If someone questions your behaviour/answer/silence and you feel that you would like to explain yourself, be polite and brief in your explanation. It is not your job to please everyone at all times.
Very few people in this world can actually hear your thoughts, and even if they could, they likely wouldn't care. Most people are only very interested in themselves, and sometimes, that's a good thing.
Learned resilience is learned and learned helplessness is learned, which means both can be unlearned. Do with that what you will.
Feelings/emotions pass. Observe them and let them go. Neither positive nor negative ones serve as anything more than markers/signposts of temporary states of physiological/emotional/mental imbalance/balance. Do keep inventory of where you like/don't like to be and adjust your thoughts and actions, accordingly (easier said than done, I know, but you got this).
If you are having a particularly emotionally challenging/charged day, stop what you are doing, and do some breath work while expressing gratitude for whatever arises in that moment, however big or small.
You do not have to apologize for/explain anyone you choose to befriend or date; all the while, remember that some choices are not aligned with your highest potential and may cause you to deviate from your chosen path. Accept the consequences of every choice you make. Learn from your choices.
Cultivate healthy assertiveness. Meditate on this. It will make all of the above possible to achieve.
Ask yourself: Do you know who you are and why you are doing the work you do? Most people haven't figured it out, but this is the driving force behind exuberant, consistent confidence and grace.
Remember: True art (and relentless creativity) arises out of true vulnerability, humility, courage, fearlessness, and unadulterated love. Anything else is an imitation.
I love you, infinitely and relentlessly, as I love myself. I forgive you, completely, as I forgive myself. I know we will grow together, always. And so it is.

Silver and the Book of Dreams
[3 stars]
Creating a new story from well tread ground is never easy. But Helena Hufnagel and Sina Flammang still manage to put their own spin on the dreams-as-reality genre (adapted from Kerstin Gier’s novel). This isn’t a Freddy Kruger story, it’s the story of a group of teens trying to find their way in the world and how far they’re willing to go to get to their goals.
But in trying to skip past the drudge of the pretty well understood setup, Hufnagel compacts the action and reduces the reactions to speed things along. Some of this works quite well. Teens are great at just accepting the world at face value and responding to it without questioning the foundation. But some of the logic leaps, and certainly some of the acceptance of disaster and danger, are just too easy. It makes for a breezier movie, but it lessens the credibility and feel of the stakes.
Jana McKinnon is a solid lead with some great screen presence. She takes control of her situation almost immediately and helps drive it through to the end. There are a number of up and coming faces around her as well, Chaneil Kular and Rhys Mannion primarily. But the script limits the impact of anyone’s performance. There is little opportunity for nuance or depth. The story bolts out of the gate quickly and just keeps driving forward. Again, great for a distraction, but not exactly a great flick. But it is reasonable entertainment for an evening if you like teen horror movies. Silver also makes for an interesting calling card for the creatives and what they may come up with next.

#christmasclapback For years some of my in-laws campaigned for lineage and questioned me about when we were going to start a family, despite our repeated joint explanations that we weren’t ready yet (for numerous, clearly defined reasons). So, if this is resonating with you now, and you’re dreading a similar inquisition imminently, here is the Christmas clap-back I wish I’d thought of all those years ago. “Thank you for your concern about my readiness to continue your family line, but that’s really a decision for me to make about my own uterus, and I’d appreciate you staying out of it and keeping your opinions to yourself.” Don’t be pressured, because these people may want you to pop out kids to suit their own agenda, but it doesn’t guarantee they’ll love and care for them once they’re born. Check out the horrors my long awaited children endured in Too Relieved To Grieve | The Alternative Heartbreak Handbook: https://amzn.to/2Y4sC0s (link in bio) Your uterus, your choice, your readiness. Term Project 10: Your Choice (last illo)
Me, myself and I (of course I meant Friends)
Hip Hip Hooray! I had reached my end goal of completing 10 Weekly illos for the term project. I did something different I made the subject pastel-hued as the background contrasts with the foreground.
The reading break came so quick and left already damn that's crazy. This got me cooking for my final illo. So here is a throwback to last year's reading break where I met three of my best friends from high school in Vancouver for the weekend. They came all the way from Toronto and Winnipeg. We back outside Boys let's get it.
Thank you everyone for the weekly illos. It surely has been a ride.

Take Action on Day 1
The choice is yours.
When are you gonna take action?
Someday?  One day?  Any day?
The sooner you do it, the closer you’ll be.
You just gotta take the first step.
And, then the next step.
One step at a time.
Decide that today is Day 1.

Uncharted
[3 stars]
There is an alchemy to movies. You can have all the great action you can imagine, like this has. You can even have some decent talent, like Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Chaos Walking) and Antonio Banderas (Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard) like this has. I’ll even grant Mark Wahlberg (Infinite) some props along with Sophia Ali (Truth or Dare?) and Tati Gabrielle. But talent, even together onscreen, is empty unless there is also that elusive chemistry to pull it together; otherwise it’s all just empty moments on the screen.
And, sadly, that’s about what was left when the end credits rolled on Uncharted. Not even at the end of the extravagant finale of this launch of the franchise did I feel like there was a team on screen. And I don’t mean, necessarily, a group working together for a common goal in the story, I mean a group of people connecting emotionally on screen as individuals.
First Holland wasn’t quite an adult nor a teen. He was a young man playing an adult, but trying to appear younger than he is. Which is all a convoluted way of saying his character was ill-defined by the writers and then ill executed by director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland: Double Tap)…and that muddied the emotional through line for it all.
Wahlberg didn’t help either. His typical laconic approach to the role could have been understated and funny, but instead it was just empty. Without a believable tension between the two main characters, especially with Wahlberg standing in for the missing brother, there is no arc, only a puzzle and adventure. Pretty and inventive? Sure. But no more memorable than a roller-coaster after you’ve gotten off of it.
The series isn’t dead in the water. There is potential (and a clear path to a sequel that’s begun just a couple minutes into the credits), but they’ll need some seriously better writing and directing to rescue it going forward.
