True, this particular mission had ended up with him working with the Resistance, but he was still sure he’d been the target and they’d just gotten lucky finding the Resistance fighters there. Which he probably needed to get out of there before he became the next prisoner. “Doesn’t mean your friends wouldn’t kill me if they got the opportunity.”

“Then you must not be trying very hard.” Poe replies, his eyes lit up with amusement and his lips tight with a smile he’s trying so desperately to keep to himself.

“C’mere, lemme show you.” He barely waits for a response before placing his fingers to her neck in the appropriate position. Her pulse is identified almost immediately, and his free hand reaches for one of Rey’s.

“Right here, nice and strong. You can’t possibly miss it.” He says, replacing his fingers with hers and holding her hand steady in place. “Feel it?”

This war, the First Order, it’s all for him to bring back his Empire. I was a puppet in his war. I need you, Rey. We need to destroy this evil together or they will be no galaxy left. “not this time,” he says weakly, eyes fluttering closed. he had plans for them. a life outside of this war. outside of this good versus evil and everything else. he had plans for them to live happily, together, and have a family. something he’d deny he wanted from the moment they first met. the connection was instant and he’d felt this deep pull towards her. 

it had never gone away, not even now as he lay dying in her arms. “before i go... rey... i love you. i wanted more for you... for us... a life we’ll never have,” he mumbled.

ben had been trying to figure out the best moment, the best place, the best way to ask rey to marry him for quite some time now. things had been going well with the resistance and while he had been met with much discourse upon his arrival, he was currently in a place where most of the people there were accepting of him. he still needed to keep his guard up. 

currently, rey was asleep, next to him in bed and he had been lying awake, twisting the ring in his fingers. the same one that his father had given his mother many years ago. it was an emotional moment, receiving it from her. it meant so many things, but most importantly, that she was on his side. she had been so supportive of his new choices, of his new life. it made tears sting in his eyes.

as rey turned over and opened her eyes, he knew that this was the moment he’d been waiting for. she gave him a small smile and he returned it. 

“there’s something i’ve been wanting to ask you now for awhile... are you awake enough?” 

she laughed a little and nodded, giving him her full attention.

“you mean so much to me, rey,” he started, ring hidden in his fist for the moment. “everything you’ve done for me, what you’ve risked to bring me here and give me a new life, a better life... i can never tell you in words how much all of this has meant to me. that you believed in me when no one else did, that you saw the good in me, which is more than i can say for anyone else in my life. rey... you are everything to me and i would be honored if you would be my wife. will you marry me?” he asked, producing the ring for her to see.
