It’s true Austin had been the driving force behind their relationship. When he met her, he felt as if he had come home. There’s a line in a old Tracy Chapman song that he’d always loved, “It would feel so good to be, in your arms, where all my journeys end.” That’s what being with her had made him feel - safe, whole, complete. Someone to share this crazy life with.
She had resisted at first. She was older than him - ready to settle down, get married, have a family. He was on the verge of fame, a soon-to-be breakout star in a Hollywood blockbuster. She had been attracted to him of course, had fallen for him instantly. But she resisted giving herself completely over in the beginning. She’d been in Hollywood a long time, knew many actors, had seen behind the curtain.
She kept telling him she didn’t think she could survive it, if they got together and it didn’t last. Didn’t he want the freedom to be young, handsome, famous and unattached? But all he wanted was her. A freight train couldn’t have kept them apart. It was destined to be, for better or worse. And now here they were, an ill-fated pair of crossed stars, crashing into one another yet again.
—-
The lumberjack helped Austin get her into an Uber and gave him her address. When had she moved to Nashville? So much had happened in such a short time, Austin felt off-balance, as if he might teeter off the edge of a cliff if he wasn’t careful.
She was in and out of consciousness on the drive home, mostly out, and it gave Austin time alone with his thoughts. They turned, inevitably, to that day in May, after they had returned from Cannes, when everything fell apart in the most spectacular way.
Why had Austin let himself be persuaded, by one of his oldest and dearest friends no less? It had started innocently enough, this friend dropping little comments here and there about how Y/N was nice and all, but Austin wasn’t ready to settle down, was he? He was getting more famous by the day, paparazzi following his every move. Invitations to parties and premieres and film offers from his favorite directors. It would be so much easier, so much more fun, without being attached, his friend had said.
And what about all of the upcoming projects Austin had that required him to be away for months at a time - in Budapest, in Ohio, and after that, who knows? Y/N had a full-time job at a studio in LA that required her to stay there, meeting with directors and actors, supervising film productions. She couldn’t pick up and travel with Austin. In fact, she had been quietly house-hunting for a place the two of them could call their own. Something about that got under Austin’s skin, an itch he couldn’t quite scratch.
Then, right before Cannes, his friend struck the final blow. Austin had been in love once before, he reasoned, and look how that turned out.
“I watched it nearly destroy you, man. It took you two years, three women and the other side of the world to get through it. What if things don’t work out with Y/N? Do you really want to go down that path again, so soon?”
Austin was torn from his thoughts as the Uber pulled up to a brownstone apartment in East Nashville. He gently shook her awake and she blinked blearily.
“Where am I?” she asked groggily.
“You’re with me, baby, I’m taking you home,” Austin murmured quietly, his voice a raspy hum, a protective arm around her shoulder.
He got her out of the car, up the stairs and into her apartment, rummaging in her purse for the keys. In the moonlight, he could see the apartment she had made her own. He felt a catch in his throat…she would have made them such a beautiful home together.
But that dream was dead. He knew there was no going back, no matter how much he wanted to. He had thought about reaching out to her once he came to his senses, realized his mistake. His life felt so cold without her constant warmth. But he was paralyzed by guilt and regret, unable to make the first move. And now he could see that she was completely broken, unrecognizable after what she’d been through. A soldier returning half her weight.
Austin practically carried her to the bedroom, gently laying her down in the bed, taking off her cowboys boots (he smiled to himself, he never thought he’d see the day), and covered her with a blanket. He sat down on the bed beside her, gently placing his hand on her cheek, stoking her eyebrow softly with his thumb. A little quirk of hers, she had always loved it when Austin did that, it made her feel safe and cared for and loved.
She opened her eyes then, and looked at him, pain and recognition written on her face. A tear slipped down her cheek before she moved her head from his grasp, and turned away from him.

The autumn sun slanted through the living room curtains and fell across Austin’s face, waking him. He rubbed his eyes and stretched his long arms above his head, yawning. He rolled over on the couch, opening his eyes and for a moment wondered where he was. The events of last night came flooding back all at once, hitting him full force. He felt heavy and sad and…dare he say it, a tiny bit hopeful? He had no reason to hope, other than the fact the universe had brought them together once again, in the most unexpected way.
He heard a noise from the hallway and turned his head. He could just barely see Y/N’s eyes staring at him from behind the doorway. She ducked her head back behind the wall when she realized she’d be caught. A hint of a smile crossed Austin’s lips as he cleared his throat and sat up.
“Good morning,” he rasped, his voice still waking up, making it more of a whisper than he had intended.
Y/N slowly reappeared and leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, an unreadable expression on her face. She looked more like the woman Austin remembered then - her face rid of the heavy makeup she had worn last night, eyes still sleepy, an over-sized Journey t-shirt hanging off one shoulder. Her short, dark hair though, that would take some getting used to.
Austin ran a hand through his bedhead, making his curls stand up even more, rather than taming them. He thought he saw her face soften for a moment, a ghost of a smile playing across her lips, but it was gone in a flash. Her light eyes pierced him through and through as she just stared at him.
“How are you feeling?” he asked tentatively, standing up and moving slowly towards her, inching closer one step at a time, as if she were a wild, skittish thing that would bolt at any moment.
He saw her tense up the closer he got, before she cut her way away from him and into the kitchen. He heard the faucet running, the kettle switch on and the sounds of coffee being made. She still hadn’t said a word.
Austin knew her well, could tell she needed some space, a little time for her world to adjust to the current situation. He walked over to the window and looked out on the beautiful fall morning, leaves of yellow and orange littering the ground outside, a slight breeze making them dance on the sidewalk.
He felt restless, his thoughts swirling a mile a minute. He had so much to say, so much to try and make her understand but he didn’t even know if she would listen to him. How was he going to find the words to tell her that every love he had before was the love of a young, immature boy. But this was different. A grown-up kind of love, the love of a man.
“What are you doing here, Austin?” The sound of her voice startled him out of his reverie. He took a deep breath before turning to face her.
She stood across the room, as if she didn’t trust herself to get too close to him.
Austin’s heart stuttered in his chest for a moment. She was talking to him. Not angry, not sarcastic. It was start. He needed to tread carefully here.
“I drove down to Nashville for the weekend, just for fun. I’m in Cincinnati for a couple of months, working on the new Jeff Nichols film,” he said by way of explanation.
A genuine smile broke out on her face and the hard exterior slipped for a moment.
“Oh my gosh - Aus! You got the role? I’m…I’m so happy for you.”
Austin had been in talks for the film when they broke up, Jeff Nichols was a favorite director of his and Y/Ns. It lit him up inside to see the old her shine through for a moment.
He smiled but soon felt tears pricking his eyes and turned back to the window so she wouldn’t notice. So much time, wasted.
He took a breath and steadied himself. This was it, the moment he had hoped for and feared and wrestled over for months. Without warning he turned around and closed the distance between them in mere seconds.
Y/N was too startled to move. Her breath caught and faltered, she looked down, unable to bring herself to look into those ice blue eyes. The eyes that had sparkled when he teased her. The eyes that had turned dark blue when he made love to her. The eyes that had cried when he left her.
“Y/N,” he breathed, “Look at me.”
She shook her head and squeezed her eyes shut, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I can’t,” she whispered, her voice thick with tears.
Austin reached out his hand, gently taking her chin in between his fingers and lifted her face towards him. Her eyes were still shut tight against the sight of him.
“Please, baby. I have something I need to say to you.”
She took a shuddering breath and opened her eyes, looking at him, truly looking at him, for the first time in months. Tears continued to stream down her face. Now that they had started, she wouldn’t be able to stop them.
Austin bit his bottom lip, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. It hurt him to see her in so much pain. More than anything he wanted to take her in his arms - hold her, kiss away her tears, tell her everything was going to be ok. But he held back, he had to try and make things right first.
“I miss you so much. Letting you go was the biggest mistake of my life. I let myself be swayed by someone I shouldn’t have. And...” he paused, unsure how to proceed, the fear welling up in him even now. Even though he was an actor and expressed emotions for a living, it was difficult for him to reveal his true feelings when it came to his actual real life.
“And this is no excuse, but… I was terrified. Terrified of being hurt again, terrified of making a life with you, terrified of having a real home for the first time in a long time.” Tears were falling down his cheeks now, but he didn’t care. “When my mom died, I felt like my home, my heart, was ripped away. I never thought I’d find that again, until I met you. But I ruined it," he whispered, his voice breaking. "I lost the one real thing I’ve ever known. And I…”
Y/N stopped his words with her mouth, taking his face in her hands as she kissed him. Then she kissed his eyes, his forehead, his cheeks.
“Shh, Aus. It’s ok. Shh, now.” She placed her hand on his heart, leaning her head onto his chest as he enveloped her in his arms. He was shaking, taking deep breaths, as she snaked her arm around to rub comforting circles on his back.
“I love you, Austin,” she said simply. “You’re my person. There’s no one else for me. There never was, there never will be. It’s only you. I just thought I’d have to live the rest of my life knowing you were out there somewhere, but not with me. Please. Please never leave me again.”
She looked up at him as he smiled through his tears. It was more than he had dared to hope for - her kindness, her love - he didn’t deserve it. But he would strive every day for the rest of his life to be the man worthy of her.
