Your Saving Grace

Part I

“There’s nowhere to run. Give up. You’ve lost.”

Shaking hands moved back and forth across the table, eyes focused and brows furrowed in heavy concentration.

“Not yet.”

The man spoke softly, almost as if he were talking to himself. His eyes lit up with a sudden energy and he went in for the kill.

“Ha! Checkmate! I win!”

Mika’s boasting words and smug grin invoked a quiet chuckle from the other side of the room, but the man sitting across from him kept his solemn gaze on the knocked over chess piece in front of him.

“Mika, I swear to everything that is holy in this world- One day I will win.”

“You said that last time young grasshopper. And the time before. And the time before that. And-“

Jayme threw his hands in the air.

“Okay! I get it! I’m not the best at chess.”

“Not the best? Honey, you were put in check within the first three minutes on your best games.”

Zee spoke with her signature cynical flair, adding a bit of annoyance to her tone, but she smiled at the banter between the two boys.

Zee enjoyed when the two forgot their jobs and just existed like nothing was wrong. It helped distract her from what was happening outside.

Mika and Jayme had been friends for 3 years when the “Catalyst” occurred. From what the pair had told her, the two had been working on some underground investigation of a drug company, when the attacks began. The pair had been in New York City together, and they barely escaped the police. After that, they just were on the run until they met Mags and Zee, and that was it.

Zee assumed the New York incident was why Mika had a slight limp, or why Jayme had a constant tremor in his hands, but she never brought it up. There were things you didn’t ask your team, just as there were things you never told them.

Zee had been in Boston, working with Mags, when the Catalyst happened.

It wasn’t as bad there, but Boston was still a targeted city. A company’s CEO and a group of his henchmen staged an armed coup against the government, and declared himself an executive. The official reports said that Congress negotiated with the man, but in reality, the government was nothing more than a puppet for him.

Mags and Zee managed to get as much of their team out of the city, but they eventually had become the only remaining members still alive.

It had been difficult, but they survived, and they did it together.

And nothing would change that.

Not sure at this stage if Yoo Sangah's character arc will deepen a crazy amount but even if it doesnt her characterization is still pretty compelling adjacent to the rest of the cast's. She's so desperate to help the ones she cares about and she admires Dokja while also maybe resenting his confidence and eventually (maybe. I think) this will lead to her growing as a person and end up better able to empathise with others
