dreams-of-fate asked:
" sometimes recipes just don't work out. and that's okay! what matters is that you tried. " (Chun'er~)
Tumblr media
He was coated in flour the recipe was open in front of him. Lan Sizhui glanced helplessly at Chun'er when she said sometimes they just did not work out right and the slender young man dusted the powder from his face. "Mn." he agreed but was not looking pleased. "I am sure I followed this recipe to the letter." he said as he held the small booklet out to her. "I bought it in Ting." he thought it had been a lot of rice flour to be honest.
Tumblr media
"It seemed a bit much." he lamented as he glanced to the mess of hard dough and flour that was covering the small preparation area of the kitchen. "So...its a get our daughter and go out sort of night." he cheered immediately as he began to clean up. "Do you have a preference of where darling ?" @dreams-of-fate

Top 10+ notable baihe authors currently working today
1. Jun Sola
Jun Sola (君sola)'s claim to fame rests on her tomb-raiding epic Exploring an Empty Tomb (探虚陵), which she began serialising in 2010. It is now approximately 4 million words long and still ongoing. The epic tells of the adventures of sheltered but intelligent cultivator Shi Qingyi and the mysterious Luo Shen across multiple historical periods and into modern times.
A partial (8 out of 300 chapters) fan translation of the novel (historical section) can be found here.
A partial fan translation of the audio drama adaptation for the modern section of the novel can be found here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Ning Yuan
Ning Yuan (宁远), baihe's own multi-genre queen, has been writing steadily since 2008. Her titles range from historical court epic At Her Mercy (我为鱼肉), sci-fi thriller The Creator's Grace (造物的恩宠), VR-themed novel Middle-Aged Love Patch (中年恋爱补丁), and showbiz romance The Show Must Go On (逢场入戏) For 2024, she has promised a historical cyberpunk baihe novel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Ruo Hua Ci Shu
Ruo Hua Ci Shu (若花辞树), who has been writing in the genre since 2012. She is probably best known for her historical novels, of which the most popular is Minister Xie (谢相). Billed (by me) as The Goblin Emperor meets Sha Po Lang, Minister Xie tells the tale of teenage female emperor Liu Zao's indefatigable efforts to turn her (significantly older) prime minister Xie Yi into her wife while trying to get to grips with ruling an empire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Jiu Nuan Chun Shen
Jiu Nuan Chun Shen (酒暖春深) shot to dizzying levels of fame on the strength of the action thriller Miss Forensics (我亲爱的法医小姐). The novel features a push-pull relationship between a forensic pathologist on a one-woman crusade of vengeance and justice with a self-destructive streak a mile wide and a police detective whose stubbornness is a match for hers. Its popularity is such that it even has some degree of mainstream awareness.
A partial (5 out of 144 chapters) fan translation of the novel can be found here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Qi Xiao Huang Shu
Qi Xiao Huang Shu (七小皇叔) had been toiling unnoticed in the word mines for a few years before earning acclaim with her Republican Era tomb-raiding novel Reading the Remnants (问棺). The novel focuses on the adventures of five tomb-raiders: Li Shiyi (a veteran of the trade), Song Shijiu (a creepy fast-growing baby found in a tomb), A-Yin (a tomb-raider turned courtesan), A-Luo (the Overseer of Hell), and Tu Layao (a small-time hustler).
A partial (8 out of 115 chapters) fan translation of the novel can be found here. A second partial (10 out of 115 chapters) fan translation of the novel can be found here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The author has since released a trio of contemporary romances — Pat Me on the Back (帮我拍拍), Evening Tide (晚潮) and Kissing a Gardenia (都什么年代了啊) — set in audio drama production and acting circles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Min Ran
Min Ran (闵然) specialises in contemporary romances, all of which have been popular enough to attract print publication and audio drama (and sometimes manhua) adaptations. Her two most notable works are the contemporary age gap romance For the Rest of Our Lives (余生为期) and the showbiz novel (with a dash of rebirth) Waiting for You (余情可待).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Yu Shuang
Yu Shuang (鱼霜) writes primarily contemporary romances, and is particularly known for her showbiz novels. Notable works include the showbiz novels The Light (微光) and Those Long Divided Must Soon Be United (分久必合)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Yi Zhan Ye Deng
Yi Zhan Ye Deng (一盏夜灯) is another specialist in contemporary romances. Her best known work is probably the age gap romance Feelings Speak for Themselves (桃李不言), which has been adapted into both an audio drama and a manhua.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Qing Tang Shuan Xiang Cai
Qing Tang Shuan Xiang Cai (清汤涮香菜, literally: Clear Soup with Coriander) is known for her mostly-fluffy, slice of life contemporary romances. Her best known work is Fascinating (入迷).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Shi Wei Yue Shang
Shi Wei Yue Shang (时微月上) she came to the attention of the wider baihe audience with her 2021 infinite flow novel Players, Please Be On Standby (玩家请就位), followed by the transmigration xianxia novel Incantation for Subduing a Dragon (降龙诀).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honourable mention #1: Tai Yang Jun
Tai Yang Jun (太阳菌) is a favourite among fans of the wuxia subgenre, which is under-represented within baihe. She is probably best known for the two wuxia novels Jianghu Demolition Squad (江湖拆迁队) and Song of Everlasting Regret (长恨歌), as well as the xianxia novel The Dragon (见龙).
Honourable mention #2: Misterande
Your one-stop shop for dark deranged toxic lesbians, Misterande's best-known work is the dark thriller I'm More Dangerous Than You (我比你危险), featuring a cat-and-mouse game between a serial killer and a writer of suspense novels. The manhua adaptation has an official English translation, which can be read here.
Honourable mention #3: Xiao Bao
Xiao Bao (晓暴), known affectionately as 'CEO Bao' to her fans, has written upwards of 20 novels, most of them featuring high levels of explicit sexual content. Her titles include Bait (诱饵), an omegaverse novel featuring a mostly consensual poly relationship, and A Young Girl's Fancy is as Lovely as a Poem (少女情怀总是诗), featuring a daughter/mother relationship with (at least initial) noncon/dubcon.

For whom was this spring created (if I cannot spend it with you)?
Special thanks to @alamangoes for illustrating this idea so well and blowing me and @botanycrewmember out of the water every time she sent us an update!
Reference and research under the link!
These are the references that we sent to Stes before we commissioned her. We just thought it was neat to share <3
For the general silhouette and cut of the clothes, we had references of paintings & sculptures from the Southern-Northern Dynasty and early Sui Dynasty. The clothing patterns are inspired by the characters’ names (waves from Gu Hengbo’s “bo” and clouds from Yuan Zixiao’s “xiao”).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gu Hengbo’s hairstyle is taken directly from the novel, described as a high bun held up with strings of jade beads; Yuan Zixao’s hairstyle is a simple period-appropriate topknot that allows for easy maintenance during travels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gu Hengbo’s sword, Tian Wei Shei Chun, is based on a replica of a sword forged in the 6th century; the charm on the sword hilt is a traditional Chinese bow that we decided is made by Yuan Ying for his shimei.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuan Zixiao’s fingertips are stained with ink due to her role as an archivist; the water and cloud motifs in the background are inspired by illustrations from the Shan Hai Jing, emphasizing the distance and yearning between the two characters

Happy Lunar New Year! It's the Year of the Dragon!!
I've seen the new Dislyte banner and it just reminded me about some fun thing about how we talk about Lunar New Year and some things surrounding it.
So as a primer, the Lunar New Year is based on the Harvest Calendar 农历 (Nong Li) as opposed to the Gregorian calendar that we use in most of the world today. The Nong Li Calender follows the cycles of the moon, hence the reason it's known as the Lunar Calendar in english and other western languages.
Tumblr media
So when we mention Spring Festival 春节 Chun Jie it encapsulates the entirety of the first 7 or 15 days of the Lunar New Year (16, if we count New Years Eve). All 15 days are significant and depending on how big or how close your family is, there's slightly differing tradition.
New Year's Eve - 除夕 Chu Xi - Everyone arrives home and we have a big reunion dinner with our immediate family.
New Year's Day - 大年初一 Da Nian Chu Yi - Officially Chinese New Year, we'll go around visiting our eldest relatives to wish them a happy new year bai nian. Families tend to congregate at the home of the eldest living relative (great-grandparents' homes, grandparents' homes, eldest uncles homes) Wearing red, Firecrackers, Dragon Dances and Lion dances are all common parts of the celebration! By legend it is used to scare away the evil monster Nian who used to eat people!
youtube
(Lion Dancers will go up to people's homes and businesses as a troupe to usher in the new year! It's also a highly acrobatic sport with its own institutions, definitely check it out!)
Seventh day of New Year - 人日 Ren Ri - Day of Humans - we consider it the day where the first humans were created by Nuwa, so it's everyone's birthday! Festivities for most households tend to end on this day or on the eighth of New Years.
Tumblr media
Fifteenth day of New Year - 元宵节 Yuan Xiao Jie - Lantern Festival marks the official end of the New Years/Spring Festival. In Hokkien we call it Chap Goh Mei 初十五 (literally 15th [of the new year])
You can read about the other days of Lunar New Year here: https://www.nypl.org/blog/2021/02/11/15-days-lunar-new-year !
Furthermore in my home city of Johor Bahru we have a special procession on the 21st of the new year's called the Chingay Parade.
Tumblr media
So how should I wish people who celebrate Lunar New Year?
Happy Lunar New Year! is good (abbreviating to Happy LNY! is cool too) this is for consideration of for example Koreans, Vietnamese, Hmong, and other diasporic Chinese Lunar New Year celebrators!
In my country of Malaysia, Happy Chinese New Year is the norm because most people that celebrate Lunar New Year happen to be ethnically chinese.
恭喜發財 (Gōng xǐ fā cái) - Wish you wealth and prosperity
身體健康 (Shēn tǐ jiàn kāng) - Wishing you good health
萬事如意 (Wàn shì rú yì) - May everything go well for you
Bonus:
What are Red Packets and how do I get one? (lol) 🧧
It's also generally alright to go visit or 拜年 bai nian with your neighbours that celebrate Lunar New Year during this period of time, remember to bring a pair of mandarin oranges with you! (Remember to always bring mandarin oranges in pairs as it's seen as good luck.) You might want to contact them ahead to see if they're around XD Unmarried folks can get a red packet from the hosting family for wishing them a happy new year. It's kind of like trick-or-treating lol.
新年快乐!!

She was a polarizing character but I adored Yuan Chun (not as a person per se but her arc!!!)
If you think about it, she starts as very much a main character in so many period romcoms/romances - a lovely and loved princess. Babyish and spoiled but not really mean. With a crush on the handsome easy going hostage prince (who is treated as an honorary guest and can probably make quite an appropriate husband.)
But the reason I love her so much (in addition to the fact that Li Qin is stupid beautiful as far as I am concerned and I'd stare at her all day if allowed) is that taking a charmed life princess and deconstructing that is one of my fave tropes even though it can be done very differently (EB is doing it with Ning, I loved Glamorous Imperial Concubine which did it with Ruby Lin's protagonist, the FL of Goodbye My Princess etc.) I am always a fan of "I am a Disney Princess in the wrong genre" set up.
And that's the thing - she's not in a fun romcom, she's in a grim epic. And so her family destroys her hostage prince's family and life and he turns about and destroys her family and her. Her arc is sweetheart to villain which, come to think of it, is very much Yan Xun's own arc. It was never gonna happen in the drama, but it would be a fascinating AU in which they somehow got together in their damaged monstrous glory.
Meanwhile have a MV for her:

One very early foreshadowing of the Chun Yuan reveal is in ep 15 when Shen Meizhuang is demoted for allegedly faking her pregnancy. Zhen Huan bribes Fangruo with the brow ink to ensure that somebody will look out for Meizhuang and then we get this scene, where Fangruo has painted her eyebrows in the distinct style that Chun Yuan used. After that the Emperor, who had been giving Zhen Huan the cold shoulder, decides to visit her when he had been planning to spend the night at Hua Fei's place. This is such a "blink and you'll miss it moment" which makes so much sense in retrorespect i.e. Fangruo was inducing the Emperor's nostalgia for ChunYuan to make him visit Zhen Huan.

Teng Pu-Chun was born in Taiwan in 1957. He graduated from National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). Due to his father’s profession, Teng observed patterns of stones and structures of trees since childhood.
Determined, sharp and mature at an early age, Teng loved the learning process. After graduation, he bid farewell to the art circle in Taipei and moved to eastern Taiwan to enjoy unfettered freedom. The artist has been creating ink paintings for a long time.
However, he does not confine himself to the artistic traditions of the Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. His work displays a sense of individual freedom; in particular, the unique technique of “rolled wrinkle strokes” - it makes his magic realism truly beautiful.
