I put on my Naruto-scholar hat and am currently working on an essay about how Konoha tried to erase the Uchiha from collective memory.

So I was looking at the various memorials within the village and found it interesting that the anime changed the appearance of that one memorial stone:

The manga one is shaped more like an ordinary tombstone, which is rather meh in impact when compared to other memorials in Konoha (the Hokage stone faces/the Vote statues or even the Will of Fire flame in the graveyard).

The anime chose a stone resembling a broken Kunai, a standard ninja tool.

One of the central themes in early Naruto was the Shinobi = tool dilemma.

Chapter 32’s title was literally “A tool called Shinobi”.

[Becoming the country’s tool is most important…] [That’s the same for the leaf village]

Back then Naruto (both the character and the manga) criticized and rejected this idea very clearly. A couple panels before, it was hinted at that Kakashi, the role model shinobi, quarreled with this dehumanizing concept himself.

I honestly love that the anime changed the memorial’s appearance because now the metaphor couldn’t be more on the nose - it was a perfect choice to symbolize what’s wrong with the shinobi world. Konoha views her Shinobi as tools (the same way a Kunai is) and what is commemorated with the memorial are Ninjas killed in the line of duty, i.e broken tools.

Maybe that’s why Kakashi kept disassociating in front of the memorial. It’s a painful reminder of Konoha’s ideology, one that let the village use his loved one’s like worthless tools till they’ve served their purpose and died an agonizing death in the name of the Will of Fire.

It’s clear that for Konoha, a Shinobi is nothing more than a name on a cold stone after their death; their memory to be smelted down and forged anew into propaganda.

Despite that, one key theme has always stood steadfast till the end of Naruto - the importance of human connection and the transformational power of sentiments like love and grief. And it was always the connection human-human, not human-state, that was the most powerful force.

Yugao, Kakashi and Iruka. It was them who, through their grief, reclaimed their deceased loved ones and honored them as humans with dreams and feelings - not as the village’s tools.

Which of the minor jōnin characters who aren't senseis would be the best sensei? Genma, Hayate, Izumo, Kotetsu, Raidou, etc. I think the background jōnin are underappreciated sometimes

Well, not all of them are jonin (some are chunin), so I'm gonna add under the pretense that they either got a lucky promotion or got in trouble, so now they have to deal with the genus sjdjdjdjbd.

I've read so many fanfics starting the background Konoha nins that I sometimes forget they don't play major roles oops 🫡🫡 anyway, here it goes!!!

Rin and Kushina jinchuriki double attacks: what's better than one amazing jinchuriki? TWO amazing jinchurikis. It'd be cool to see Rin and Kushina controlling their powers and fighting together. Also? Kushina being Rin's shishou is such an interesting concept. Yes, teach your local medic nin some sealing <3

Konan and Karin paper chains inferno: we have two sensors blessed with beauty and power... If they decided to set a trap together, I imagine there won't be much to save from the poor soul who's their target. They can also bond about being fucked over by one of the sannins... You know.

Anko and Ino purple fangs special: capture and torture the enemy, cracked the secrets on their minds and put a stop to their acts. Anko and Ino are both sure of themselves and their abilities, they are not afraid to show off and more than anything, they are every bit as capable as they say they are. The danger of sending them together in a mission...

Chiyo and Tenten army of two: one puppet master and one weapon master together? As long as Tenten is armed to the teeth, Chiyo would have the time of her life controlling a flying arsenal. Let's not forget that Tenten was trained by Gai, so she surely knows how to evade and be fast when she wants to.

Yugao and Shizune poison blades: two elite women of Konoha, specialists in kenjutsu and poison. It wouldn't be exactly nice to have them in your pursuit. It's not every day that an anbu captain and one of Lady Tsunade's appreciates want you dead. Just be careful to notice the senbon ad you try to don't fall for Yugao's katana.

My Naruto AU Headcanons:Itachi Uchiha

Itachi was trained by Minato and learnt Flying Thunder God jutsu from him. Itachi also figured out how to add Fire Style to Rasengan,and taught Minato how to add his chakra transformation to it,which was Lightning Style.

Minato is the only one throughout history to teach FTG to two of his successors:Genma Shiranui and Itachi Uchiha.

Kushina spent quite lots of time with Itachi after Obito's death. She is one of main reasons Itachi is not just so great at casting sealing jutsus but legendary Talk-no-Jutsu as well.

This skills were useful against Mangetsu and Mei,as he slowly guided them to light. They went from rivals to enemies to comrades and to friends.

Minato died with his head resting on lap of 5 years old Itachi,poking on the uchiha prodigy's forehead in his last moments.

Itachi's best friend and soulmate is Mangetsu(INFJ),who is complete opposite of Suigetsu(ESTP). They are so intimate it's unreal for most people.

Mangetsu is a very affectionate person who likes to depend on Itachi,often hugs him and lightens his mood. The irony of this is that Mangetsu wanted to kill Itachi so bad for 4 years. INTJ X INFJ=Golden Pair

Sometimes,Tsume teased Itachi,asking him to go on a date with Hana. Hana scolded her mother once she told Itachi "Afraid us half-canine anomalies would taint your noble uchiha blood?" Which earned her a shocked expression on Itachi's face,who just said "What?"

Ayame liked to cook for Itachi and waited for him whenever he came back from a mission. Itachi believes Ayame to be one of the best chefs in the village. He encouraged Ayame, who genuinely thought Itachi's good enough to match her.

Itachi mentored Yugao for two weeks after Shisui's death. By the end of the training session,She had mastered 4 different kenjutsu styles and significantly enhanced her physical prowess. Danzo originally wasn't gonna let Itachi do it,but Itachi said he'll make sure konoha will have one of the absolute best swordsmen ever. He succeeded.

Out of all Akatsuki members,Itachi enjoyed Konan's company the most. Konan would visit him once in a while,and prevents the illness from paralyzing him. She kept it a secret. She was like an elder sister to him.

Deidara's death hit Itachi hard. While the former had beef with the later,They mutually respected each other and got to hang out a few times. Deidara sensed Itachi's sadness and could empathize with him. Deidara missed Kurotsuchi badly. Itachi never slept ever since Mangetsu died under full moon. Deidara occassionaly lied beside him,staring at the moon and stars.
