Red-Eyes
A few days ago we discussed the Blue-Eyes archetype, used by Seto Kaiba in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! DM anime, and today we have the Red-Eyes archetype used by Joey Wheeler/Katsuya Junouchi. Both Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Red-Eyes Black Dragon were treated as being incredibly rare in the anime, but there was one important distinction between the two: BEWD was a representation of power, where REBD was a representation of potential. Unfortunately, in the TCG, the Red-Eyes archetype wouldn't come anywhere close to realizing its potential. Though there would be a couple of good cards to come from the deck, they were far more powerful as generic cards rather than as part of an actual Red-Eyes strategy.
Tumblr media
In spite of the rivalry (if not downright animosity) between Joey and Kaiba in the anime, the Red-Eyes archetype would get a lot of support that mirrored Blue-Eyes support cards. Alternative White Dragon would be mirrored by Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon, White Stone of Legends would be mirrored by Black Stone, etc. Even Kaibaman would get a Red-Eyes Mirror card in the form of Black Dragon's Chick. This card is notable, however, for getting a name change specifically to remove it from the archetype, as it was originally called Red-Eyes B. Chick. It was never supposed to be part of the archetype, so it would get the Frog the Jam treatment until it was renamed, where Red-Eyes cards would all say "except Red-Eyes B. Chick."
Tumblr media
As mentioned before, the Red-Eyes archetype saw some similarities to Blue-Eyes, but one thing it never saw was competitive success. There are actually quite a few reasons for this, but we'll start with the beginning. Many of the early upgrades of Red-Eyes were, frankly, just bad. Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon could Special Summon itself from the deck, one of the few cards capable of doing so, but was strictly worse than the material necessary to make it. What's more notable, though, is Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon. This monster has similarities to Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon in name scheme and Summoning Condition, as it can only get on the board by Tributing a REBD. Also like Shining Dragon, it was 2 Levels higher than its base version with the same ATK/DEF line, and even gained 300 ATK per Dragon monster in the player's GY. This is where the similarities end, though, as Darkness Dragon didn't have the protection of Shining Dragon, and so was much easier to deal with.
Tumblr media
Also holding the archetype back was the plethora of Gemini monsters released as support it. Gemini Monsters are inherently some of the worst in the game, as, while they have effects, they don't actually have access to them until they're Normal Summoned while already on the field. Given that players are only allowed one Normal Summon per turn, Gemini Monsters could potentially take as many as two entire turns away from the player, slowing down their plays to insurmountable levels. In spite of this, most Gemini Monsters don't have particularly powerful effects, and the ones in the Red-Eyes archetype were no exception to this. The strongest of these was likely the Summoned Skull retrain, Red-Eyes Archfiend of Lightning. It could just pop all opposing monsters with less DEF than its own ATK, which sat at a whopping 2500, so at least it could potentially remove an entire board if it were allowed.
Tumblr media
Despite being a Dragon oriented archetype, there's some weird Zombie support contained in the archetype as well. However, it is perhaps because of their odd status that some of these cards saw more play than most of the other Red-Eyes cards. In particular was Red-Eyes Zombie Necro Dragon, which was an actually strong card in its own right. As a Level 7 Synchro with generic material, it was very easily playable, and was potentially a +2 for the player in the Battle Phase. This didn't make the archetype itself more playable, it did show that there were individual cards with potential.
Tumblr media
Before we get to any of the other good cards in the archetype, we must discuss a card that has a bit of an oddity in the archetype: Red-Eyes Fusion. You see, the card is objectively terrible, but is also one of the most played cards in the entire archetype. To explain why requires the introduction of two other cards. The first is Predaplant Verte Anaconda, which could copy the effect of Red-Eyes Fusion straight from the deck, including its ability to use material from the deck. What it didn't copy, however, was the complete ban on summoning any other monsters the turn it was used. The other is the card this would be used to summon, that being Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon. For a time, it would be the premier target for Verte, given its protection, ability to pop up to two monsters a turn (and burning the opponent for that monsters ATK), and negate that permanently boosted its own already formidable 3000 ATK.
Tumblr media
There were a couple of other actually good cards in the archetype besides Dragoon. Released well before Dragoon was Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon, a Rank 7 Xyz with decent protection that dealt 500 damage to the opponent's LP any time they activated a card or effect, which meant they had to be very particular about their turn. Its generic material requirement made it quite popular, particularly in Kozmo and Kashtira decks. It did have the ability to revive a Red-Eyes Normal Monster, but this was something that never came up since this required detaching material, and its actual important effect required it to still have them.
Tumblr media
Even before this, though, would come what was potentially the most used card in the archetype, that being Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon. This card would be a powerful extender for any Dragon related strategy, as it could hit the field incredibly easily and, until its errata, had only a soft once per turn on its ability to Special Summon another Dragon from the players hand or GY. This would lead to it being the only member of the archetype to ever see time on the Forbidden/Limited list, and even after its errata changing its effect to a hard once per turn freeing it from the banlist, it would see continued play because it was just that powerful.
Tumblr media
The latter part of this post shows that Red-Eyes being emblematic of potential is more true than could have been known in its early days, where it lived in the shadows of Kaiba's Blue-Eyes, Yugi's Summoned Skull, and even Joey's own Jinzo. But it wouldn't be as its own strategy, as it really didn't seem to have one. The only members that were ever truly successful were due to their generically strong abilities. Like with many other fan favorite cards, Red-Eyes Black Dragon just didn't have the ability to compete with the competitive meta, and would unfortunately languish in the depths of mediocrity, never realizing the full potential its wielder would in the anime.

So as it turns out, there is in fact a Yu-Gi-Oh card archetype/series that is quite literally The Wizard of Oz crossed with Star Wars.
