The old ramen shop near Yukigayaotsuka where local workers would often have lunch. The building had seen its better days when I first saw it in 2006 or 2007, but the owner lived upstairs so like many of these old shops, it was also a home. I haven’t been there since covid began and I wonder if it is still around.

Autumn ends and winter nears. Every year at this time, we look forward to a return the the mountains of my childhood home and excitement and anticipation builds. Even the job seems to become more less stressful.

But this year things are different and we’ll be staying in Tokyo. That might not be bad were it not for the fact that everyone back home is growing older and time together is passing by quickly.

Mai Homu: Yukigayaotsuka

For well over 15 years, the fire extinguisher in front of this house has enticed me to photograph it. The old, rusted metal of the house makes it a thing of beauty (or something) in my mind when photographed close up. But in fact, the whole house is beautiful. The wooden structure, the old style (and dangerous in a quake) heavy tile roof, as well as the sliding doors in front. It is likely more pleasant to look at and feel all nostalgic about than it is to live in it, but if offered to me at a reasonable price, I would test that theory.
