(Shadowgast Cat Café AU)
ao3: hand in hand is the only way to land
5.1k, fluff, getting together
"They are truly ridiculous, are they not? Just look at them."
"They are sooo cute. Ahhh.." Jester sighs, her chin in her hands, dreamy look on her face.
Molly looks back at the two wizards. Essek is sitting at the bar, on his laptop, and Molly can see from here that he's just scrolling up and down absently, as he stares intensely at Caleb, whose back is turned as he steams some milk for a customer's drink. When Caleb turns around and smiles at Essek, Molly can see him awkwardly duck his head to stick his nose in his laptop again.
And now, Essek is busy with whatever the hell he’s always tapping away at, Caleb in turn sits there drying cups with a dreamy look on his face as he watches the other wizard. When Essek looks up, Caleb startles and fumbles the glass, and it drops to the floor and shatters. He gets up to help him, and it’s right out of a movie scene with their heads together as they both crouch on the floor with their hands “accidentally” touching as they pick up the glass shards.
Fuck’s sake. Molly could wring both their necks.
They’ve been doing this dance around each other for weeks (or maybe months at this point, who knows) and it is infuriating. It was cute at first, but now… Molly just wants to be able to chill out after a long day of work, and have his Iced Triple Red Eye in peace without having to sit in the constant treacle-like tension in the room that the wizards are holding between them. Other than this being (one of) his places of work, this is his favorite coffee shop, and they’re ruining it.
So, they should do something about this.
“We should do something about this.”
When Jester turns to him, she has stars in her eyes and she looks what can only be called delighted .
“Oooh! Molly, can we really?! They can be cute little boyfriends who work in a cute little cat cafe together and oh my GOSH - I am SO excited!” Her tail lashes behind her eagerly, then wraps around his leg as she leans in and almost yells in his face.
The wizards were making him feel grumbly, but as usual, Jester’s energy is contagious, and he grins back at her.
“Alright darling, love the enthusiasm but hold your horses – we need to come up with a plan first.”
Jester settles down and puts on a very silly serious face, complete with a tightly knotted brow and a pout as she starts thinking. Molly ruffles her hair because she’s cute and he loves her, and because she lets him.
Just as they both settle in for a good plotting session, the café door slams open and Nicodranas’ hottest local celebrity and resident rich bitch strides in, phone in hand, baby dragon on a chain on the other, and half his face obscured by his giant bug-eyed sunglasses.
Yussa Erenis. Haughty elf wizard (gosh another one, what did Molly do to deserve all of these wizards) who is well-known for– actually wait—
“What’s he famous for again?” Molly whispered from the side of his mouth at Jester.
“No clue. But he knows Mama, so he must be important!”
Molly hums in assent, and keeps watching the scene unfold in front of him.
Yussa’s pug-faced, silver baby dragon is having a hiss-off with Frumpkin, and Yussa looks like he could care less, prattling out his order before he’s even asked.
“Triple hazelnut iced chai latte with oat milk and espresso cold foam. And don’t forget the topping like last time.” And he ends the order with a dismissive hand wave.
Molly rolls his eyes to the heavens. The ‘topping’ is sprinkles arranged in the letter ‘Y’, as evidenced by the ridiculous man’s socials.
He’s a right git to be sure, but looking at how he fills those gold pants (and who the fuck wears gold pants anymore?), Molly would be lying to himself if he didn’t admit he found him sort of hot. And that he sort of wanted to sleep with him. In an ironic sort of way, obviously.
Essek makes his way back to his seat after all the glass had been cleaned up (and the blue eyed redhead had been sufficiently looked at longingly), and Molly watches his expression turn from blissed to disdainful in one fell swoop, and he rolls his eyes as he turns away from Yussa, just as Caleb says, “Ja, coming right up.”
Dealing with customers already wasn’t Essek’s favourite thing, and the dressing down his teacher had given him for forgetting his ‘‘‘topping’’’ last week had rocketed Yussa to the top of his shitlist. Yes, his teacher. Essek was in Nicodranas for a magic apprenticeship, and he had the misfortune of ending up as Yussa Erenis’s apprentice.
Essek had walked in once to the café hair and cardigan looking singed and smelling smoky, and announced irately that he was going to ‘murder his teacher for leaving him with his ugly bastard of a baby dragon for ten days while he frolicked around to Light knows where’. Amidst giggles, Molly had made him sit down and given him some of his famous spiced chicken soup to help him calm down. Essek was a simple man, and terribly predictable, so it worked.
He’s also kind, attractive, sassy, and a nerd, and clearly a great fit for Caleb.
He just wishes they would do something about it.
So, back to the matter at hand.
“Any ideas?”
Jester’s drawing in her sketchbook, and looks up just as she completes a pink heart around a doodle of a small, cutesy version of the wizards kissing.
“Nope!”
Molly grumbles again and places his head on the table, cheek smushed into the surface, and he turns towards Jester and whines, “Jessie, I can’t take it anymore. Help meeeeeee.”
“Hmmm okay, okay.. maybe I’ll ask mama for help when I go home today. She’s really, super good at romance ,” And she wiggles her eyebrows, which makes Molly laugh. “Everyone always falls in love with her right after they meet her.”
“Alright.”
He listens to Jester sing something under her breath that sounds like, ‘ do do do dooo, the Ruby of The Sea is the best lay ever –’ as she continues doodling, and he spaces out, turning over fleeting ideas in his head as they come and go.

I don’t care if you loved, hated, or felt meh about the end of campaign 2
I care when people try to pretend there is the remotest moral implications for ANY of those feelings, or that feeling the “wrong” way makes someone a lesser person
People aren’t “not as smart” as you for feeling a different way about the end of a story
Doesn’t matter that you saw all these hints and bits and pieces that fit perfectly/were completely abandoned
Doesn’t matter if they want a different kind of narrative, catharsis, or even just plain explicit, unmistakeable rep
(Hola shadowgast, poor lads were like 7 hours in and forgot how many of us were raised on “oh but they might be more than friends 😘”
Also the demi Essek reveal, love to have it, respect Matt wasn’t sure how to bring it up in game (honourable mention trans Yussa Erenis, lookit all this wizard rep), still woulda felt just as good both ways)
Like I get this is the age of “all of you are so uneducated my take is PERFECTION INCARNATE AND I CAN PROVE IT” but… just
Take a moment to remove all those little quality indicators
Accept other peoples’ reasons for feeling the way they do are perfectly valid, reasonable, and still won’t change how you feel because Your Feelings Are Valid Too
And they won’t change how other people feel, and nor should they
Personally, I’m Children Of Earth-ing 141 because all of Matt’s favourite ending tropes are my Least Favourite Most Hated Endings Of All Time, and I’ll happily commiserate with anyone who wants to join me
But it makes me so happy when I see people say they loved the ending, that it was everything they wanted and perfect (not least because you’ll probably love all the other endings too! Vox Machina’s was very similar and I’d be STUNNED if c3 broke the pattern!)
Something may not be for me, but so long as it resonated with someone else, as long as it made you guys light up like the dang sun, it was good, and valuable, and worthwhile
(And yes it did take me like a year of crankiness and grumbles to get here and it is still a work in progress, but it’s just so much nicer than trying to shoot down someone else’s joy? It’s way more fun to lean in and I’m taking this mindset to everything else I love forever)
It’s a good way to remind myself that even when people think completely differently and do shit I would never, that there’s some worth and joy to be found in doing shit that way
It lets me expand my horizons and look at why I feel the way I do about things and question if there’s something I’ve missed, because there nearly always is
We are better when we’re together and when we remember to respect each other as people, ESPECIALLY when we disagree over the little shit
There’s always fixit fic for shit you hated and canon compliance for shit you love, and talking to someone who truly loved something you didn’t see the value in is a great way to feel better about it
Talking to people who didn’t like something you loved is a great way remind yourself that yeah, we are all different, and that is Super Fucking Good Actually (and come up with buckwild headcanons about how to make things perfect for both of you, which is always good fun)
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of “everybody who doesn’t agree with me is wrong and just can’t Think like me” but that trap leads to boring little bubbles until we’re all just breathing our own farts
No matter what divides us, we can always agree on the simple truth: Matt does not make cishet wizards and that is very sexy of him

For Maia -- Caleb/Essek/Yussa, hanging out being nerds together
Wizards in a Tower
Caleb wakes with a start, not sure what’s driven him out of a solid sleep. He lies there for several seconds, orienting himself to the dark room, running through his reminders. He’s in Nicodranas. He’s in Tidepeak Tower to complete some research with Yussa’s help. He’s with Essek.
Caleb rolls over, and his arm lands on an empty patch of mattress. Of his drow lover, there is no sign.
He sighs and rises from the bed, tugging on a robe and tying it around his waist. He has some idea of where Essek has gone, and the realization puts a fond smile on his face.
He pads out of the guest quarters, bare feet whisper quiet on the polished stone, and climbs the stairs to the study. The door is cracked, the low murmur of conversation floating out from within, and as Caleb pushes inside, the scent of fresh-brewed tea tickles his nose.
He finds both his quarry and Yussa inside, perched in front of the fireplace, tea set between them, and a table piled with books nearby.
“I should have known introducing you two might have been a terrible idea,” Caleb says as they look up at him, Essek with his warm smile, Yussa with eyes twinkling of carefully guarded mischief.
Essek and Yussa have known each other for years now, since Caleb first made the introductions and suggested Essek might find shelter and friendship in the mage’s tower. They circled each other like stray cats unwilling to trust for several weeks, but by the time Caleb returned a month later to check in, they had become fast friends.
As he had known they would.
“I have no idea what you mean,” Yussa says, sitting back with tea and saucer in hand. He crosses one leg over the other, the very picture of ease, the elegant and no doubt expansive fabric of his gold robe settling around him.
There’s room beside Essek, so Caleb takes a seat, and finds there’s a third cup and saucer waiting -- as if they knew he would be soon to join them.
“We were all supposed to be resting before we dove back into experimentation and study,” Caleb says as he serves himself and side-eyes his lover.
Essek does not look at all apologetic. “I woke with a thought, and it wouldn’t leave me be. You know very well how that is.”
“And you couldn’t wake me?”
“You need your sleep,” Essek says, mouth curved with amusement behind the concealment of his tea cup. “You’re not getting any younger, you know.”
Caleb rolls his eyes. “Yes, I’m well aware that I am only human.” He stirs honey into his tea, the familiar scent of it wrapping around him. It’s definitely one of Caduceus’ blends. “What was your revelation?”
“He believes he can finally re-program the mechanism within Halas’ creation,” Yussa says, a touch of amusement in his tone, as there often is when he watches Essek and Caleb interact.
“To reduce the effect or increase it?” Caleb asks, and he knows he’s failing to hide his enthusiasm. There is so much more to explore within the Archmage’s bane, but part of the difficulty in doing so is the time-constriction effect.
The other, more physical dangers are no longer much of a concern since Caleb has long since learned that Jester and Fjord are always eager for a jaunt, and he can rely on both Beau and Yasha to accompany him if he wished. But he does so hate to lose time.
“Both,” Essek says, and there’s pride in the way he lifts his chin. “I believe I can finally change it to suit our whims.”
“How confident are you?” Caleb asks.
Essek hums as he considers it. He sets down his tea, hands smoothing over the wrinkles of his robe before he casually rests a hand on Caleb’s knee, the warmth and weight of it both a comfort and apology.
“Reasonably so,” Essek says. “Though I would need to run some tests. I’ll not risk any of our lives until I am more sure.”
Caleb nods. “The Nine Heroez is due to make port in a few days. Can you wait that long?”
“I can be patient,” Essek says.
“My waking alone would suggest otherwise,” Caleb drawls, and Essek’s cheeks turn the rosy-violet of a blush.
“I am still here,” Yussa says in a mild tone, but his amusement is palpable. “Kindly take your flirting back to your quarters.”
Essek’s blush deepens.
Caleb chuckles. “And waste the tea you’ve so graciously brewed for us? I know better than to be rude to our host. Besides, I’m awake now. We might as well start crafting a plan.”
“I wasn’t aware The Mighty Nein bothered with plans,” Yussa says. His tone is mild, but affectionate, and the teasing in good fun.
At this point, Yussa owes them more than they owe him. A certain incident involving an item retrieved from Aeor comes to mind.
“You’d be surprised,” Caleb says. “We are unexpectedly reliable.”
“Never have truer words been spoken,” Essek says and pats Caleb’s knee. “Fine then. I’ll explain what I know. We can start with that.”

Okay no hate to Wensforth but who in their right minds opens the door to their abode right after a group of people tells them they are being chased by VERY BAD AND STRONG people at the moment and these people might be coming any second. Although it would be a different thing if Astrid herself somehow found the door and opened it. I would give benefit of the doubt but it just seems strange to me.
I’m just fucking scared for Yussa’s life damn, he is still floating somewhere in the Astral Sea while big bads are in his house and they can pretty much do anything to him and his tower. TM9 could have potentially just kidnapped his body with them, like yeah not the best plan but at least higher chance of survival. Now, Yussa’s life is pretty much in the hands of the assembly and I. DONT. LIKE. IT.

Just watched the episode and is it just me or does Caleb regress like at least 9 “interacting normally” points when around yussah?? He seems so apologetic and meek and it just feels like he shows his neck to an extent. The rest of the group was very quick to agree to leave him there alone to learn but I’m glad they didn’t because he just seems so jumpy around yussah. He isn’t like that to the same extent with Essek though so I don’t know where the line is drawn with him
So I talked a little bit about the dynamic between Yussa and Caleb after Yussa’s first introduction. Caleb most definitely is very on edge and wary around Yussa. I don’t want to completely re-hash that post here, but the cliff notes take 1) when Caleb first met Yussa, he was strongly reminded of Trent, and 2) Caleb and the Nein’s subsequent interactions with Yussa did nothing but reinforce that perception.
As far as why Caleb’s reaction to Yussa is different from his reaction to Essik, there are a few different things in play. First, the circumstances in which Caleb and the group met each of them are very different. Essik clearly has power over them, and the ability to harm them, but Essik’s presence was offered to them, as opposed to them pestering and intruding in his space until they got his attention. (I mean, Jester has done a lot of “pestering” of Essik, but teasing someone is much different from actively trying to break into their giant fuck off tower.) Now, it’s true that Essik is—or at least started out—with them out of obligation to his station and the Bright Queen, but it’s still a far sight different from being with someone who has no reason to pay you any mind beyond personal amusement.
Second, while Essik is liable to be just as untrustworthy as Yussa, Caleb has a better sense of Essik’s motives. Yussa is a powerful mage, who has (by his own admission) outlived most, if not all, of his previous allies.* Yussa also runs somewhere along the scale of neutral to opposed to the various power structures of Wildemount’s politics. He’s explicitly opposed to the Clovis Concord, and flouts morality in favor of power, in a way that may very well remind Caleb of the Cerberus Assembly. Yussa is loyal, first and foremost, to himself and his own self-interest—which makes him not only dangerous, but a wild card. He has no particularly good, or predictable reason to keep the Mighty Nein around, and it would be relatively easy (at the very least in Caleb’s view) to fall from his good graces. Meanwhile, Essik’s loyalties and motivations are (as far as we and Caleb know) entirely clear. The Nein have to be careful, and remain at least relatively deferential to the political figures of the Dynasty in order to stay safe. The ways they might fall out of favor with the Dynasty (betraying them to the Empire; lying; running off without explanation) are far more predictable than the ways they could potentially draw Yussa’s ire.
Third—technically, Essik offered up his tutelage without much prompting on Caleb’s part. Caleb asked Essik for more information about how to go about learning more about Dunamancy on his own, and Essik is the one who took it upon himself to “test” Caleb, and to then agreed to teach him a couple spells. When Caleb does ask for further tutelage, he pulls back the request as soon as the Bright Queen let’s him know he’s treading on dangerous ground. Caleb is cautious around the higher-ups of the Dynasty. He is also bold in his requests and actions—he wants to accomplish a pretty big goal, after all, in ending a war—but he still manages to be so in a way that is respectful of his company, and he tends to follow their lead in their interactions. As soon as it is clear Caleb is pushing too much and too far, he pulls back. He is plenty cautious with both Essik and the Bright Queen, but he takes bigger risks with them, because he has specific goals that involve them, and specific things he’d like to learn from Essik. This isn’t exactly the case with Yussa—Yussa’s only real draw, when they first meet him, is “powerful mage.” He’s a potential source of knowledge for Caleb, yes, but the arcane knowledge that Yussa possesses are likely to be things that Caleb could largely learn for himself through research. Dunamancy is something he can only learn in the Dynasty—and even then he defaults to wanting to learn from books rather than another person.
When the group returns to Nicodranus, Caleb is still nervous around Yussa, because he remains an unknown. He’s anti-Clovis Concord, but his stance on the war isn’t necessarily clear to Caleb or the group. Part of their tentative arrangement with him was reliant on the idea that he’d get to study the Beacon more. Given how much they don’t know about Yussa, the entire group assumes that he’ll be upset that they no longer have the beacon. Caleb is likely still recalling that Yussa’s biggest piece of advice to Caleb was “use your friends to your advantage.” As another point of contrast, Essik has been helpful and encouraging toward Caleb without using rhetoric that explicitly reminds him of Trent. Essik has begun to earn…not Caleb’s trust, exactly, but perhaps some of his confidence. It’s possible that in their first interaction, Yussa could have done the same. Had Yussa and Caleb’s first conversation gone differently Caleb might have had some of his concern and wariness abated—even if it nothing could eliminated it completely. Instead, the one and only extended conversation the two of them had reified every anxiety Caleb has about powerful mages—especially powerful mages without obvious loyalties beyond their own self interest. Yussa, in Caleb’s mind, remains a more direct threat than Essik (whose only reason to turn on them is if they betray the Dynasty). Further, where Essik may remind Caleb more broadly of “dangerous, powerful mages,” Yussa specifically reminds Caleb of Trent, and therefore his behavior around Yussa likely reflects how Bren used to behave around Trent.
*Some of that may be the natural result of Yussa being an elf, but we don’t know how many of Yussa’s former allies were also from races with longer lifespans.

So, what do you think? A burned bridge with Yussa for sure?
I remember how strongly he was with Jester at the mere notion of sharing the towers location.

Things that did not happen in Cognouza: In all the array of possibilities, there was one where the Mighty Nein did not stay in Cognouza after Lucien began to bind the Somnovum.  Where they did not break reality to restore themselves, and instead had to retreat or perish when Lucien triggered the charges. Where Somnovum may be a misnomer, now, as yet another pair of red eyes opened, not for the first time.  They lay, confused, on the warped streets of Cognouza, staring at the sky that wasn't, and thought, How rude, that someone hadn't even buried him this time.
Where the closest thing that he had to decent company was a golden elf wizard, who, to be fair, might only not be screaming along with the rest because he didn't have a face. (Imagine coming back, as a part of Cognouza, newly attached to the hive mind by a strange broken splint.  Like a tumor, like a shadow, like a parasite.  Something that only existed because he wanted to live when he shouldn't, and in the astral sea, willed was as good as done.)
