Feel free to ignore if this is too spoilery but when DotY Zuko becomes Firelord would he make sign language a required part of the Fire Nation school curriculum?

Absolutely, but probably not immediately or through his own initiative.

The first few years after the Comet are spent housecleaning the Fire Nation Imperial Government and rebuilding international relations. I imagine the Gaang flying hither and yon trying to keep the war from restarting because everyone hates the Fire Nation (and like, with good reason, but not really conducive to world peace, y'know?), and Zuko himself is too busy trying to demilitarize his country and dodging assassination attempts to focus on such benign matters as educational policy.

Once things settle down, Zuko can now focus on the internal matters that have so far been neglected, and by now I imagine he has a somewhat less bloodthirsty government to work with. With the War Council mostly neutered and its funding cut substantially, departments such as Education can come into focus, and Zuko is careful to hire ministers willing to take initiative for the betterment of the people and the country. One of these ministers is a native of the Outer Island of Wei Jian, whose younger brother had sent her a letter the summer the war ended about a mysterious new student in his class who claimed that Fire Lord Sozin had actually ambushed the Air Nomads instead of fighting a standing army in honorable combat, and played the tsungi horn like a man possessed, and even threw a dance party in a cave outside of town and then disappeared without a trace! This minister, a lowly clerk at the time, had taken it upon herself to find out the truth about the Great Comet attacks, and in so doing made it her life's mission to rehabilitate the Fire Nation's educational content and policy. Being appointed to the Fire Lord's Education Council makes this minister's career, and after a crash course in YHL to ensure that she can understand her Lord, makes sweeping reforms in how Fire Nation children are taught, both in methods and content.

A few years pass, and after these reforms are settled into common practice, this minister, now fully fluent in YHL and delighting in being able to chat with the off-duty Yuyan Archers who continue to litter the Palace, gets the bright idea to propose the addition of Yuyan Hand Language to the available language courses taught at the higher educational levels (others of which include High Earth Court, Imperial Fire Tongue, and both Northern and Southern Water Dialects). This catches Zuko by surprise, and after some thought says that if our intrepid minister can get a curriculum approved by the Yuyan Tribe Elders, then he'll approve it. She does just that, shocking just about everyone, and within a few years of her proposal Yuyan Hand Language is added to the list of language courses at the secondary levels.

Within ten to fifteen years of the first class, Yuyan Hand Language is second only to Fire Common in languages spoken in the Fire Nation.

Seriously, my heart, guys

Chills every time Smellerbee throws up her hand and shouts "Freedom Fighters!" and the whole camp cheers - really you see how they're a family, a community, healing together the best way they know how

Honestly, everything with Jet is great - him actually giving GOOD advice to Katara, making him a real person rather than someone who only cares about himself - I believe this Jet actually cares about Katara the person, not just Katara the weapon

Also the fact that there's only the small hand-brush as a romantic gesture, the rest of Katara and Jet's interactions keep strictly platonic - nowhere near as charged as all Sokka's interactions with Suki and Yue

So! Finished Legacy Of Yangchen yesterday, and hoo boy. Here are my thoughts (spoiler warning):

amazing. awesome. 10/10

really though I think this is the best of any of the novels so far. Like I really liked the others but this one was really good

love that there was no forced romance or pointless will-they-won't they, Kavik and Yangchen *aren't at that point* (and you know might never be, we don't know) so while there's potential and a lot of chemistry (and a fake-dating plot), they don't have a big kiss moment or anything resembling a love confession - their closing interaction is a pledge of companionship. Frankly I think aang/katara should've been handled this way. But alas...

absolutely loved all the parts where it would show the present happening, get to a really tense moment, then cut away to show the build-up to that event - helped keep the suspense up while also giving the necessary set-up. Very cool.

Love Chaisee. She's horrible and I love her bc she's also really smart? And there's moments where you almost feel like she genuinely wants to help even though she's doing all this terrible stuff behind the scenes. But it never feels like inconsistent writing

That said. The fact that she supposedly invented Lake-Laogai-esque brainwashing felt a little forced yk. Like cool reference, why'd it have to be here? Now you've created questions like, how does this technique get all the way to Ba Sing Se 800 (give-or-take) years from now?

That's basically my only complaint though, and other people have covered that issue better than I could

I liked getting some more info on how combustion-bending happens, we already knew it was a rigorous training but yikesss

kalyaan also is such a cool villain. like, Avatar has done 'villain is the hero's relative' before but it's always been 'well, they're an abusive monster who'd let their family die as easily as anyone'. The scene where they got Kalyaan to confess by 'torturing' Kavik? Wouldn't have worked with Ozai or any of Korra's or Kyoshi's villains; iirc even the lady from Imbalance wasn't terribly concerned about her kids. Same goes for Chaisee and her genuine concern for her family; I liked the departure from the typical villain formula.

Absolutely cruel to kill off Nujian?? That was uncalled for. I'll be suing for emotional damages. Rude.

Jujinta my little guy <3 (i have a lot of thoughts on Jujinta but mostly I just think he's pretty cool. Would still love to know how the whole Yuyan thing works, since the Legends RPG says they were established in Roku's era a whopping six centuries or so in the future? Was archery just like a family trade until that point when they formed an Organization of it or is it just inconsistent lore?)

didn't expect Akuudan and Tayagum coming back for this book, but I'm glad they were included. Love 'em

ATLA marathon done ( I never entirely watched the 3rd season before, only the episodes after Zuko joined) and here's some very unpopular opinions about it:

1/ Suki is overrated and a bit annoying.

I don't hate her character but I never saw her as a part of the Gaang nor as a love interest for Sokka. A brief one in season 1 to mark his long road out of his sexism, yeah, but after? I don't think she's relevant anymore. Kyoshi's warriors should stay in Kyoshi's island, period. Ty Lee has so much more potential for me.

2/ Zutara is freaking stereotypical and boring.

And let's be honest, most of these shippers are themselves either crushing on Zuzu, either on Katara or even on both. It could maybe be a brief moment but not a long term relationship.

3/ Aang is unbearable half of the show.

From his voice to his "but the monks told" to his refusal to even consider the fact he could possibly have to end a monster to save everyone else... He sounds altruistic and nice but he can also be very self centered and irresponsible. I totally get that he's only 12, but when you act like a holier-than-thou more than the half of the story it's just irritating. In season 1 yeah it was normal but I feel like he was like that all the show

4/ The main villain is dull and empty.

Big bad fire dad who want to be the ultimate world ruler, give me a break... Hot but lack of everything else. But good looking.

5/ Making the Fire Nation soldiers more dumb or less good at fighting than everyone else is just stupid. How did they managed to conquer the world? Take the Rough Rhinos for example, described by Iroh like if they were legendary fighters but beaten each time? Very logical, very very logical. Only the Yuyan Archers weren't poorly treated but these poor archers never came back so...

6/ Appa and flying bisons are overrated. Dragons and shirshus are way cooler. And the fact they made him go underwater in the invasion episode is just ridiculous, why not making him earthbend or breath fire at that point?

7/ Speaking of Shirshus... June would make a good ship for Zuko. He's made for powerful non bender girls with long dark hair.

8/ Uncle Iroh is nice but not an angel, and Iroh apologists should remember than if Lu Ten was still here, Iroh would probably be an antagonist, one you wouldn't mess with.

9/ Fire Nation seems to be the only one, with the swamp benders, to allow women in their army. Also their technology... No wonder Legend of Korra is in the 20s, after the end of the war, they had all the time to create and modernize.

10/ And finally, Katara is the reason why Zuko didn't win the last Agni Kai. If she wasn't in the way like that, Azula wouldn't be able to target her, and Zuko wouldn't have to sacrifice himself for his friend. I smell the same bullshit as the Hermione situation in the first HP movies when they tried to make her doing all the cool stuff/ good lines, they should let Zuko have this moment for himself, Katara already has plenty occasions to shine.

Now the angry fangirlies can rage in their corner, it'll keep them busy until Netflix ruined the show.

Okay so the ones I find interesting are:

Seungwan - I always thought Seungwan was a very interesting character and that it would be very nice to see a reader insert with her, considering that she doesn't have a love interest (also, i kind of always saw her as a queer character? Idk, something just smells lgbt on her)

Yuyan - I really wanted to read something with her but always found absolutely nothing. I really like the angst/fluff thing, i love this combination

Bona - Omg finally someone writing for WJSN😭😭😭😭😭 I love Bona so much and it's really exciting to see someone willing to write about her

Yeah, I felt like Seungwan definitely needed a proper love interest, so she seemed like the most fitting character to write about first. I totally get what you mean about the fruity vibes she gives off too lol.

Yuyan doesn't get as much attention as she deserves, I'm so glad someone finally requested for her. Angst/Fluff is also my favourite combination, because I get to write the saddest stuff, but then give it a happy ending or something like that.

I've been really getting into WJSN lately, so I'm thankful people are requesting for them. Bona is so cute and deserves the world! I'm always happy to write for them.

Wait why is yuyan kind of eating… i forgot about her bc they blacklisted her from tv within months of debut but shes still doing stuff and performing live. Not only that she is leaps and bounds better at singing than any female cpop idol rn…. and she has improved since qcyn2 maybe we should be forcing all idols to sing live to make a living shes doing it cos she has no choice but maybe its for the best.. and she still dances and does choreo she must rly like being an idol bc almost all the other vocalists from produce shows become purely singers post competition. I hope she gets more opportunities i think a 4 year ban is enough punishment for making stupid posts at 14. 4 years blacklist at the beginning of a career is a death sentence. Floatsam

Hakoda wondered if the blue light on the ocean was a spirit flame. It was not.

Now he has custody of a fierce little firebending girl, while his healer does everything he can to save the boy they found. He wonders if he'll regret it, what with the apparent Spirit interference and all.

Jetsam

Jetsam: unwanted material or goods that have been thrown overboard from a ship and washed ashore, especially material that has been discarded to lighten the vessel.

Zuko wakes up from some fever dreams and finds himself on an enemy ship. It's a good thing Azula is there, huh?

Creation

Deep in the Swamp is a tree. In the Tree, the Spirits speak. It is the Prince's duty to listen.

Azula doesn't know about anyone else, but this crap is giving her anxiety. Can she just burn it all down now?

Destruction

What's being destroyed? Trust? Minds? Self-esteem? Boats? Find out here!

Extinguish

Zuko and Azula are still trying to settle. Some things are revealed. The North Pole can't come soon enough.

Appearance

Her illness makes an appearance. Hakoda's dad voice makes an appearance. Something that shouldn't be alive makes an appearance. A surprise guest makes an appearance.

So many appearances.

Counsel

Counsel: To recommend a course of action.

Hakoda would like to recommend the Northern Water Tribe to watch their step.

Ignition

Spirit healers are rare, but man they're effective. Yugoda will never turn someone away. It doesn't even occur to her.

Zuko is grateful for it all.

Monster

The patriarchy attempts to pigeonhole some dragons. They learn that dragons bite back.

Departure

Finally, they leave the Northern Water Tribe. It is a relieve to shake the snow of it from their boots.

Stowaway

The number of royalty on this ship has gone up by one (1). Hakoda should know better by now. Yue will do anything to protect her people, and that includes rebellion.

Truce

A long due conversation with members of a chain of command. Interesting things are brought to light.

A bit of canon smacks Zuko in the chest.

Territory

Azula is not afraid of losing these people. She is also not territorial. She refuses to believe it.

Learning

Aiko starts her lessons. Azula challenges her. Hakoda is unsure of how he feels about Fire Nation training practices.

Teacher

Aiko starts teaching. Zuko makes a discovery. Aiko makes a discovery. Zuko starts teaching.

Diplomacy

Zuko tries his hand at negotiating. Bumi is interested in creative problem solving. Azula is going to creative problem solve General Fong, using a knife and some fire.

Mercy

Zuko meets the 41st. Hakoda watches the future begin to unfold.

Judgement

Judgement: (A) a misfortune or calamity viewed as a divine punishment.; (B) The ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.

Book 2: Riptide

Greetings

Bumi throws a ball. For some reason, three royals sit in the corner. One of them is not enjoying themselves.

Chosen

They arrive at the South Pole. Of course, there is a surprise there.

Ice

There is no warmer greeting than this one.

Light

The glowing iceberg was just the beginning.

Takeoff

With a push, the kids are off. Will they make it to the Northern Water Tribe? Or will they murder each other on the way? Well, here's the first step.

The Southern Air Temple is silent. For the first time in a hundred years, a human stands on her grounds and breaths in the wind.

There are consequences to our actions. Sometimes there are good, sometimes they are bad. Intentions mean nothing when the actions cause harm.

Recovery

The ride to Kyoshi Island is awkward and uncomfortable. But they will get along if it kills them.

Decision

Zuko finds a problem to fix. Luckily, he has help. But someone have to make a difficult decision.
