The androids come for the Son clan first.

It isn’t that they don’t leave any wreckage in their wake, traveling to Mt. Paozu; their appearance is simply so sudden and comes with so little warning that the world and its protectors are caught flat-footed. The androids move quickly, having no cause to seek distraction with a specific purpose in mind.

That changes on discovering that Son Goku is dead.

Gohan tries–tries to defend his mother, but his strength amounts to little more than a momentary deterrent; he falls, borderline paralyzed with pain and powerless to do more than listen as they break Chichi, destroy his home and ruthlessly cut short his grandpa’s furious bellows of grief.

Piccolo arrives, too late to help by minutes. Despite the state he’s in, Gohan nonetheless reports everything he can; two monsters in the forms of callous teenagers, unnatural in that they don’t have any ki signature, individually almost as powerful as Freeza. Piccolo commends his protégé for surviving, apologizes he didn’t arrive sooner.

Then he puts the boy to sleep.

Gohan may be drastically stronger than the average earthling, but not only has his training been neglected after Goku’s passing, he’d actually regressed since Namek. In his current state, confronting the androids a second time is tantamount to suicide.

Begrudgingly, Piccolo reestablishes that mental connection he shares with his older, benevolent half; Kami, already largely appraised of the dire circumstances, directs the Z warriors to the Kame Sen’nin’s island.

Piccolo thinks of Gohan, and asks:

“Make sure the noisy woman–Son Goku’s friend–is there as well.”

Piccolo’s arrival coincides neatly with Yajirobe’s, the wild man armed with sword, senzu and an obvious desire to quickly remove himself before any plans for combat come up. Gohan’s unconsciousness puts them on edge, though Piccolo ignores the suspicious glares thrown his direction and explains the severity of the threat to the planet, to say nothing of humanity.

Piccolo asks that Bulma and Lunch take those who cannot fight, along with Gohan, somewhere safe; the androids knew to look for Goku at Mt. Paozu, so it stands to reason they could eventually come to Roshi’s island seeking out Son’s friends and rivals.

“Sure,” Lunch says over Bulma’s indignation over plans being made for her. “I know a few spots to lay low.”

The blond tears off with Bulma, baby Trunks, Gohan, Oolong and Puar in the hovercar Yajirobe arrived in despite the swordsman’s protests.

“If that bastard were still here,” he says, a beat after they’ve left. “We’d be better off.”

Alas, Vegeta disappeared into space shortly after Goku’s passing, with no indication he planned on ever returning; nor that he had any inkling that he’d sired a son with Bulma. Whether he would help is debatable, but as it stands, Piccolo and Kuririn are the strongest fighters they have on hand. Piccolo could likely contend with the androids if he fuses with Kami, but doing so would rob Earth of its dragon balls, and by extension, any chance they have to save the lives Gero’s creations have already taken.

“There is one technique that might work,” Piccolo says, turning squarely toward Roshi. “The Mafūba.”

z fighters' tv opinions headcanon

- goku is hopeless. he's either falling asleep or getting bored and leaving. your BEST hope is maybe a jackie chan movie and lots of snacks but more than likely he'll just decide he'd rather have a real fight than watch a fake one and go find a sparring partner.

- chi-chi definitely was a 'tv rots your brain' mom and didn't let them have one in the house for many years. she caved when goten was little (he was already watching tv when he was over at trunks', she reasoned), and now she likes to watch cooking competition shows while viciously critiquing the contestants. she also likes hgtv, although it may end in her giving a rant about city folks.

- piccolo eventually gets sucked into chi-chi's shows as a result of spending so much time with the sons. he starts forming very strong opinions about cooking and food, despite, you know, not eating. he thinks gbbo is overrated despite never having missed an episode, and he LOVES chopped and cutthroat kitchen. after pan is born, he also becomes something of an expert on children's tv, and he does judge you based on what your children are watching.

- gohan discovered most tv when he was a teenager and chi-chi had mellowed out (though he and dende did sneak to watch a few kids movies back in the day). he loves power rangers and other super sentai shows OBVIOUSLY, and he gets really enthusiastic about watching all the disney movies he was never able to with pan (he enjoys it more than her tbh. pan had no reaction to mufasa dying but gohan was sobbing for days). he also enjoys the odd science documentary, but he likes to use tv more to unwind and have mindless fun. loves classic star trek.

- videl's not much of a tv person, but she enjoys going to the movies for a good action flick. it's more of a social thing for her.

- krillin loves the old school comedies. give him some mash or seinfeld re-runs and he's set. he used to enjoy kung fu flicks, but the more skilled of a fighter he's become, the more trouble he has turning off his brain to just enjoy the movie. they have a lot of nostalgic value though, and he shows them all to marron.

- android 18 loves horror. even after all the battles he's seen, krillin still gets a little squeamish (though his tolerance has gotten much better since they got married). she has no problem showing things like the shining to marron as a toddler, and she often likes to comment when the main characters make foolish choices. she also points out what she would do different if she were the killer (partially because she likes to freak people out like she did with future trunks). if she and krillin are trying to compromise, they'll watch drag race.

- 17 also likes horror movies, though he finds them less fun to watch when 18 isn't there to do running commentary with. he enjoys nature documentaries like planet earth.

- growing up bulma loved escapist romance movies, especially romcoms. her interest waned once she realized she was now the same age as the mom characters, which deeply hurt her vanity. she also grew up watching classic sci-fi movies with her dad, and she likes to revisit them and pick apart the science (gohan is the only person who will genuinely engage with her on the subject). one day when she was bored she figured out how to get tv from across the galaxy and she now likes to watch soap operas from the various planets in universe 7 to learn about other species (her mom also enjoys these). late night tv and celeb gossip shows make excellent background noise for her while she's doing an all-nighter on an invention.

- yamcha's introduction to tv was through bulma, so he is very fluent in romantic comedies and makes frequent references to them. he eventually starts watching sports movies/anime, mostly because everyone else assumes he's seen them as a professional sports player, but he genuinely likes a good underdog story and seeing a team learn to work together, so it's a nice match.

- tien thinks tv is a waste of time and every show/movie yamcha has forced him to watch has only strengthened this opinion.

- vegeta PRETENDS to think tv is a waste of time, but he's intrigued by grimdark fantasy, especially if there's a dysfunctional royal family for him to project onto. game of thrones is his jam. bulma trolls him for trying to hide the fact he watches tv by loudly discussing fake spoilers. after the buu saga, he starts taking himself a little bit less seriously and now fights with bulma about her not using the profiles on their netflix account, which fills his recommendations with "trash". she wins every argument by saying if he feels that way he can pay for his own account.

- trunks and goten liked typical kid stuff like marvel movies and action shonen anime, but once they started actually being in fights they began to find them kind of dorky. the saiyaman movie definitely killed their superhero enthusiasm. teen goten mostly watches cartoons like steven universe or adventure time, which trunks will watch to make goten happy. left on his own, trunks is probably watching hbo comedies like curb your enthusiasm or silicon valley. they both enjoy watching unsolved mysteries type shows to try and figure out how many of them are the results of their family and friends.

- mr satan watches pro wrestling and biopics of himself played by hollywood heartthrobs who are way too handsome for the role. buu loves every single one of these movies and cheers in all the right parts.

- whis is slowly working his way through sex and the city with bulma during their spa days.

- beerus still doesn't know what tv is. bulma is torn over whether or not to introduce him. on the one hand, he could get hooked on a show and then wouldn't blow up the earth while it was airing, but on the other, what if a plot twist he didn't like happened? she remembers how vegeta utterly destroyed the gravity room after the game of thrones finale. and what if he found some food dish on a tv show that wasn't as good in real life?? no, too risky.
