"are you ok" no i am once again thinking about the end of Aporia's Tag Force 6 story route where he's the one who wins the duel against Z-one and Z-one just dies in front of him and Aporia cries over it and then immediately kills himself by throwing himself into the Ark Cradle reactor. And that's just your real PSP video game for today. and im normal about it
Tumblr media
normal about the crying smiling sprite immediately before he jumps into a Momentum reactor in the wake of his best friend's death. NORMAL!!!!

Unpopular opinion apparently but I don’t mind Z-Arc’s dub voice? Maybe I’m just too used to voices like Yami Marik’s to find it all that annoying but honestly, I’m more so impressed with Mike Liscio’s vocal range: he plays all four of Yuya’s counterparts and Z-Arc and Ai in the next show, VRAINS and all six of them sound very distinct from each other. That’s just insanely talented.

🌻 >:)
IM FOUND ONE OF THESE MEMES IN MY DRAFts! Im gonna rank my experiences in the major fandoms i’ve engaged with.
🩵 YUGIOH! - Second longest running fascination. Upside!! Made life long friends. DOWNSIDE!! Was my first go at online engagement and in those 10 years so much happened that I still can’t help but feel a little sour. …Though ygo back in the day wasn’t good at tag comments, so I didn’t even know those were a thing for years until I branched out. 5/10. But grows to a 7/10 because i’ve settled into a niche area with so few people that it’s now a silly little club. 💕
🧡 Dragon Ball/Z - GENUINE CHAOS. Started off slow but intensified hard cuz get who got involved while Super was airing??? (I didn’t watch it lol), so the discourse and fighting was at an all time high. I have no idea how I even survived this in retrospect. My slight association with people netted me troll asks and my liking of Yamcha also set me up for those. …and frequent art reposting, and quite a few bizarre interactions. Pretty sure my art and edits have circulated more in latin america than I even know. This was also pre-tumblr purge so the amount of nsfw that got thrown my way is… something. That said!! Made also really good friends 💕 and DB/Z probably desensitized me to longer form discussions. 5/10 for insanity, but 8/10 for good reception and VERY PEAK and generous humans.
I think dbz hardened me.
💚 Invader Zim- started off fun (mostly irl with my friendo from days of YGO), but quickly devolved into territory that tested my patience. WHY ON EARTH THIS SERIES’ CONSUMERS had such a huge morality high ground base is beyond me. It’s this fandoms fault I learned about certain modern day online discourse terms and what instilled an irrational posting fear for a year lol. Fun at first and there’s super creative and receptive folk (then those people got kicked out) and left the most insufferable beings imaginable. There’s no in between. Shoutout to all 3 friends made who are still peak. 3/10, if I ever finish any remaining projects or decide to bite the bullet and show completed work, i’m not engaging again. The base just skews somewhere I can’t handle. Which is crazy given the ABOVE contenders have, on paper, done so much more.
dbz hardened me but iz weakened me. Which is probably why i need the formers bootcamp back. Don’t think I’m as fearful now, but i’ll still be salty.
💜 Twisted Wonderland - this is a work in progress experience. Will require further evaluation if all of the above experiences haven’t set my standards. Will stay in my corner. So far it’s 6/10 in vibes (they’re much calmer than the last one), tho I question how much of the interest is from what i do vs. what I did for others. Haven’t shared a ton of opinions yet and god knows lol we don’t want that /s. Still recovering from the former making me wanna just not do much. Baby steps I suppose.
💙 - Sonic The Hedgehog: This is a cheat, I have never interacted with the fandom directly (purely by happenstance, so thankfully no traces exist), but I have been into this since I was a child with no issues. So by default this is the best one. 10/10, didn’t engage, but I do lurk. Though all the stuff I see on tweeter isn’t exactly anything out of the norm for fandoms in general to do, so it weirds me out that people rag on this one for just kinda talking amongst themselves about innocuous things.
“omg this fandom is arguing over QUILL length ughhh can they never be pleased [30 yt videos about this drop]” ngl, this just feels like par for the course junk fandoms do. It really feels no different from DBZ where people go ham about the art style changes and which one is better. Or stupid shit in IZ where they fight about comics vs movie vs show. Like??? The only major difference here is that StH has more people in it (by the millions).
So literally nothing these folk do or say strikes me as anything more serious than what other fandoms already do??? Its just more outsiders see it then churn out content and perpetuate something worse from what’s honestly….pretty tame stuff. Maybe it’s just twitter’s setup given that’s all folk talk about.

having a bad day, can you tell me about the pink man
I'm actually having a bad day too because I've got a cold and am feeling shitty but I'm always down to talk about the z man! I hope you don't mind if I publish this because I want it to act as an endorsement of tales of symphonia to my ygo followers lmao. Cross contaminate that shit!
Basically, in my life, before there was Ryou Bakura, before there was Aegis Alver, there was Zelos Wilder. This man has been my personal punching bag since I was 14 years old - that's 15 whole years! If kinning had been a thing when I was 14 I absolutely would have been a Zelos kin back then... Ahhh.
Basically, I'm going to try and keep this as spoiler free as possible in case anyone wants to play the game, but Zelos acts as a parallel to the main female character in many ways, and really, he's what Colette could have turned out to be if she didn't have the support system of her friends growing up. Zelos is someone who has never thought of himself as being worth something, and all the interactions he has growing up only solidify that belief - between a traumatic event that all but severed his relationship with his sister and constantly being treated like he's nothing more than his title, he doesn't really have any reason to think otherwise, at least until he meets the main character and you watch him begin to open up and grow.
I think part of the reason I personally relate to him so much is because of the mask he puts up to hide how much he hates himself, and the way over the course of the game you either watch him tear it down or give in to his self hatred based on how much trust you put in him. So your choices as a player literally determine the trajectory of his growth and his ultimate fate.
I've personally been putting him in Situations since 2008 because I see a lot of myself in him and I feel a catharsis in it. Both when he comes out on top and ends up with comfort, and when it's hurt no comfort (definitely wrote a number of sui fics with him in my day, especially as a teenager when I was struggling with suicidality). He's really just such a fascinating character and both love to hate him and hate to love him.
Might I recommend my fic Ice Palace if anyone wants to know more? (spoilers ahead)

Hiiii ^-^ I am so terribly new here lmao, both when it comes to ygo and tumblr itself
A friend got me to watch 5Ds and I fell in love with it after like 3 episodes because it's absolutne peak fiction, and since finishing it I've been working my way through all the series without any particular order! Finished 5Ds, Vrains and recently started chipping away at GX
I have a soft spot for Vrains especially despite all its flaws, the final duel was just *mwah* imo
And 5Ds, as I mentioned, was excellent all around; might have a bit of a crush on Yusei lmao-
I also really like Antinomy and Primo; their designs are so good....
As for me personally I'm still kind of figuring this stuff out but I use he/him! I'm a beginner artist and writer, though I haven't done anything ygo-related specifically yet; that being said, I am currently working on an OC, so I'll make sure to post him when he's done-
Aaannd yea! I'm very happy to meet you!
Hiiiiiiiiiii, @simontheseventh!! You are definitely new around here; I've had this blog for three years, so I do know a lot of the residents around here, lololol. It's nice to see a new face, and hopefully, I'll see you around often enough.
5D's is really the way to go. U_U I'm actually a 5D's blog, but it gets hidden under all the DM stuff. Everyone has a crush on Yūsei, and anyone who says they don't is lying. That boy will make anyone go soft. \QAQ/ And of course you love Primo, that's a thing around here so you're not alone. If you haven't found them yet, you should definitely check out @vivaldini (Primo stan, sometime risque artwork, Androidshipper (two in one)) and @redeyesretrodragon (Yllaster fan, especially Z-One(?); doing so new stuff with them). I've never gotten the chance to speak to them directly, but I think they're pretty great to have in the fandom.
That being said, you should definitely get into Zexal next. 👀 Join us, join us, join us!
I also use he! And they. u_u We have so much in common, lmao. A beginning artist and writer? Nice. There's a few other people here who also have an YGO OCs. So many new things to see soon, oooh.

What are your top 5 favorite anime?
Princess Tutu - gorgeous in every way, a story that does the concept of a multilayered narrative justice while also using the beauty of ballet and fairy tales to their full emotional advantages, and also the name helps gatekeep, because if you can't get past the name you aren't the sort of person who would enjoy it anyway. I can't recommend it highly enough. Available here
Kill la Kill - amazing and energetic animation, a unique story with a surprising family theme, and probably the coolest modern take on the delinquent girl archetype. I did resist watching it at first because of the lack of under-boob support on Ryuko's outfit, but honestly, it no longer bothers me. There are valid story reasons behind all the costume designs. Again, this has the beneficial side-effect of automatic gatekeeping. Available here
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters - peak early 2000s character design, tons of merchandising money to fund legitimately good filler arcs and hire high quality animation directors (sometimes), a hero that actually has the worst win-loss record of all the protagonists of his franchise (but still retains the largest fanbase and greatest admiration for his skills and personal character), multiple engaging character arcs, and my personal favorite. This is the one most affected by nostalgia. YGO was my first fandom outside of Disney, the first thing I was really into that neither my parents nor my younger sister cared about, and it remains incredibly important to me. It took me 10 years to be able to watch the final two seasons, as my local channel for some reason decided to only play the first 2.5 seasons over and over. Those final seasons were not at all disappointing either; I loved them entirely, even with all their flaws and animation issues. I'd never claim that YGO is perfect, especially since I prefer the 4Kids dub to the original; yet even the subbed version, which I have also seen, has issues as a story. The original manga is superior to BOTH versions, if we're being honest. But this anime is amazing, fun, wholesome (without being lame, particularly the sub; the dub can be pretty lame) and long without being impossible to finish. The dub is available here (w, x, y, z), but to get the subbed version, you either have to pay through the nose or search the bowels of the Internet. Might as well try the dub: even if you don't like 4Kids, you can have fun laughing at them, and all the changes the dub made were meticulously catalogued here.
Dragon Ball - one of the best shonen ever, with an amazing world, strong characters that stay simple without being simpletons, and a slow, savory pace that makes every fight pop. I binged the entire (subbed) show in March 2020 when I had to stay home during the initial lockdown. It was exactly the cheery, grounded, fun shot in the arm that I needed when things were still uncertain and scary in my world. While I enjoy Z and parts of Super, the original is far better: more consistent in quality, pacing, and relevant themes. It's here and here right now. If you're already a fan, Totally Not Mark has some huge video essays reviewing both the entire franchise arc-by-arc and analyzing the major characters of the franchise. (The Buu arc review features Team Four Star ^_^)
Akage no Anne - one of the best works of World Masterpiece Theater and directed by future Studio Ghibli director Isao Takahata; a picture-perfect adaptation of Anne of Green Gables made for Japanese ESL education that managed to capture the pace, feelings, and gradual growth of its cast. With dreamy sequences to represent Anne's imagination and mirror the long descriptive passages of the book, the series grounds itself with simple and realistic character designs that change slowly over the course of the series to reflect the passing of time. It's from 1979, so it's even less fancy looking than Dragon Ball (1986), and Anne's initial design looks a bit awkward since she's pretty awkward and underfed at the start. But don't be fooled. Not only is this the closest adaptation I've seen to the book, but it manages to reflect Anne's rich, emotional inner world without relying on narration or a diary. It uses silence in a very mature way. Although Akage no Anne was not at all the beginning of Japan's love affair with Anne Shirley, it has become a cornerstone of that fandom in Japan. And if you love Isao Takahata's work like I do, seeing one of his earliest works is a pure joy. It's actually available on YouTube; this version has been up for 7 years straight, but I'd urge anyone interested to watch it sooner rather than later. You never know when a YT anime playlist will disappear.
Honorable Mention: Maison Ikkoku - this is one of my favorite manga, one I liked enough to collect in full and read multiple times. The anime is beautiful, and unlike some adaptations of Rumiko's work, it doesn't delve into alternate characterizations or themes. It's an iconic 1980s anime and I love what I've seen of it. But I can't put it higher because I've never been able to see all of it. Occasionally I've been able to watch episodes on YouTube with French subs, but I'm not fluent in French, so I only know what's going on because I'm so familiar with the manga. I still recommend it as a mature seinen romance/comedy. If anyone knows where I can watch or legally obtain it, I'd be very grateful.

So Episode 123. We are finally here.
The recap is done by Asuka.
After the recap, Yuri states he will turn all five into cards, Yusho thinks he is Yuya, but Asuka tackles Yuri. Sora activates a switch, Reira fails to escape, so Sora kicks them out of the way, but fails to help Asuka. Yuri states the barricades interfere with Duel Disks.
Yuri states he made some research of Asuka, she didn't lose to a male Duelists in her Honors Students era.
Yuri shows her the Honors Student Deck (this is based on the Ancient Gear Structure Deck released around this time, which was the remake of the original GX era one). Yuri asks her to choose that, or his regular Deck. Asuka states he should Duel with his regular Deck, so Yuri does the opposite.
Asuka Summons two Cyber Angel Natashas to lock Yuri out, the second Natasha is a recolor.
Sora is happy that Asuka has done this, but everybody watching this episode probably realizes this is a mistake, since the more recent Ancient Gears can negate Monster Effects. Asuka has a deeper plan, though.
Yuri sees the card text to pretend to figure out how the Deck works. As he later claims, he actually knows how the Deck works, he is merely acting to force Asuka to lower her defenses, but also to slow down the Duel to promote the aforementioned Ancient Gear SD R.
Sora, and Asuka assume he messed it up, but Yuri claims he knows what he is doing (he does).
Yuri continues his act to act suprised that he can use his trump card. Sora is shocked that he Summoned Reactor Dragon this quickly.
Asuka uses Natasha's effect, but Yuri continues his act, and destroys both Natashas.
Yuri tells Asuka to hurry up, we get a shot of Yugo, and Yuya saying the same thing. They aren't synchronizing, though, this is just a cinematic shot for irony.
In Yuya's cut, he asks Obelisk Blue student where Yuzu is.
Asuka uses Natasha's effect to take control of Reactor Dragon. Yuri acts distraught. Asuka makes a speech about Academia doing the same.
Yuri Summons Golem with Unfinished Ancient Gear to protect himself from Reactor Dragon.
Yuri claims he will use his trump card, Asuka assumes this alludes to Polymerization, so she seals Polymerization with Fusion Destruction. (This is a reference to Misawa vs. Judai Duel in GX S1).
Yuri continues his act, Asuka makes her big speech. Asuka tries to encourage Yuri betraying Academia, Yuri reveals his backstory, and how Leo helped him to find confront. During the flashback, we see Asuka in her old clothes (which she gave to Yuzu), and Yuri being jealous. Leo is watching during Yuri's backstory.
Yuri reveals he longer cares, he just wants to card people for fun. Leo is shocked. Asuka states he will the only one left. Yuri thinks that is wonderful
A brief break here, this is supposed to be a parody of the intentions of various Shin Yoshida-written villains, both in and out of YGO. As we see Z-ARC's essence later on this episode, this is also his ideology as well. Bohman, and Number 96 are the primary examples of this, but a lot of Yoshida's villains have this intent.
Yuri, with his supposedly newfound confidence (he made this decision likely much before this Duel), activates his combo to get Super Polymerization. Sora, and Asuka are shocked. Asuka states the Deck shouldn't have it, Yuri reveals he put it there, and reveals he actually knew how the Deck worked.
Yuri also reveals Super Polymerization was in his hand since the start of the Duel, which is why it wasn't sealed. Asuka asks if he tricked her, Yuri states she is too honest to the point of being dumb.
Asuka tries to negate Super Polymerization, but as everybody knows from the Wizards of the Coast era ruling, Super Polymerization cannot be negated once activated.
Super Polymerization's fusion background is different, we see multiple cards being sucked in, with the green swirls in Z-ARC's later card seen. This is supposed to be a visual reference to how Leo's ARC-V Reactor is slowly, but surely allowing Z-ARC to reconsitute himself, regardless of what happens to Yuboys.
This might need some lore explanation. As we discussed in the Kanji names, most Standard arc characters have names alluding to flowers, since everything in their respective Dimension contain a piece of En Cards, and respective Dimension Dragon, which is a fancy way to saying everything in ARC-V's current timeline iteration a tiny piece of Ray, and Z-ARC. So irrespective of the dimension counterparts, carding tons of people allows for these tiny bits of Ray/Z-ARC to reconstitute themselves.
Of course, Super Polymerization's own lore, as a card that originates from Duel Monster World that required the sacrifice of lots of the main cast also one of the factors that turbo charges this process.
Yuri Summons Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem (Cronos's big monster) to finish Asuka off. He states carding people is like breathing to him, and he thanks Asuka for making him realize his dream (this is a Giorno reference, cause same VA), and he states he will card everyone in the multiverse. We see a shot of Z-ARC, coming out of Yuri, laughing evilly, looking kinda goofy.
Leo is shocked that Yuri is out of control now. Yuri controls the barricades, causing Sora to be shocked, and he reveals he had control of them since the start. Yuri states it is time for Sora's execution.
We cut to Yuya, Obelisk Blue student states Yuzu is in Experiment Tower, Yuya screams her name, and Obelisk Blue student grins evilly, because of the Fusion Parasite in him.
Next episode is brainwashed Ruri duel 2.0.
That was the episode, here's the lore.
We already discussed the big lore parts, but this episode exists to clear Asuka, since Yuzu will not be relevant until the Z-ARC, and will not be Dueling at all, and since Edo will be paired with Sora instead, her use in the show is over. She managed to showcase her new cards, so that's it.
As we discussed before, it is pretty obvious Yuri was already planning to betray Leo, though I guess situation would have changed if Dennis didn't commit suicide. So, this episode, besides serving as the SD promotion, is here to set up Yuri as irredeemable until epilogue, and showcase the only way to get through him is by beating him, unambigiously.
It also shows Z-ARC's growing influence on the events, because of the reasons we stated above.
While the Sora, and Asuka act as if this Duel showcases Yuri's intelligence, since he reveals he already knew the mechanics of the Deck, it only showcases Yuri's shrewdness instead.
This episode's animation budget was largely spent on monster Summons, not so much on the characters.

z-one vs aporia makes me so fucking mentally unwell to remember. z-one really executed someone who REALLY cared about him in cold blood in front of everyone after going "yeah i don't see you as my friend you're just a machine". and he's one of the few permadead characters. dead inside. (kinda like aporia! *laugh track*) also this is a personal thing but i was really spoiled on 5ds before starting it but i legitimately did not know z-one vs aporia was a thing at all so that may have helped
YEAH! YEAH!! YEAH GOD ALL OF THIS!! YOU GET IT.
Like we get it right on the heels of the text basically just telling us Aporia fights for Z-one not just out of hope for the future, but out of his love for him. He will do whatever Z-one asks of him because he fuckin loves him!!!! SO SO MUCH!!!
Tumblr media
and then Z-one just fuckin kills him! Just executes him in front of everyone, in front of kids, in front of THE KID WHO REMINDED APORIA TO HAVE HOPE AGAIN IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! I LOVE DIVORCE!!!!
But even before that, the way he spends the whole duel actively toying with Aporia, dangling hope of a victory in front of him only to yank it away, makes me UNWELL. The way he starts out the duel so cordial and almost warm but the second Aporia refuses to stop or back down from his point Z-one just goes Ice Cold. goes full I Will Crush You Until There's Nothing Left mode. it's TERRIFYING. Aporia isn't a person to him anymore!!! Just a thing. Just a tool acting out and beyond its programmed task and which must be dealt with accordingly :,^)
All of this because Aporia committed the crime of *checks notes* effectively telling Z-one Maybe Things Will Be OK, Actually. Maybe We Should Trust Team 5D's. 8,^) *screaming into a pillow*
I ALSO HAD A SOLID CHUNK OF 5DS SPOILERS GOING INTO IT BUT SOMEHOW DIDNT KNOW THIS ONE WAS COMING and god it just Hits. this duel is the reason Aporia weaseled into my brain in the first place; something about this metal as fuck imagery of this broken and beat to shit robot throwing down against his friend for the sake of the future ripping my brain wide open. I have watched this duel a perfectly normal amount of times <--lying
it's so fucked up, i'm obsessed with it and them and it's so fucked up. And YEAH LIKE YOU SAID!! APORIA'S JUST. PERMADEAD. ygo bad guys either die or get redeemed and somehow he got both and it makes me explode. ;___; One of these days I'll get into my post-canon 5Ds AUs where Aporia made it out alive in one way or another (if folks can do it with Bruno then I can do it with my big guy!!!!) THEN YOULL ALL SEE!!!! SOBBING
