I didn't know about American Girl's short-lived contemporary character line until a few months ago (they came out during my hiatus from keeping up with the brand), but when I discovered them, I immediately knew I wanted a Z doll in my collection, because she has my favorite face sculpt, and I'm hoping to eventually collect all of the dolls that use it. I didn't think I'd get her anytime soon since she's usually priced incredibly high, but I happened upon one that sold for much lower than usual, despite me ending up in a bidding war. Yesterday, Z arrived home, along with another doll (who I'll introduce after I fix her up) and a small lot of clothes! I got her dressed and redid her hair, and now she's ready to join all my others!

Have you hear you hear of Zyang? or know what type of doll she was? She wasn't Girl of the Year or a Historical characters
Z was part of a short lived contemporary line in 2017. She was based off a character of a previous AGtube short!!
Z debuted along with Tenney Grant and Logan. It’s an open secret that this contemporary line was American Girl covering their asses; Gabriela wasn’t actually the intended GOTY that year, and was only developed after AG was called out for lack of Black GOTYs on Oprah. Tenney was the intended GOTY. It’s speculated that AG didn’t want to cut their losses by scrapping Tenney’s already developed collection, and so decided to release her as a “contemporary” character. AG released Z along side Tenney and Logan so this wouldn’t look as obvious to the general public.
Gabriela and Tenney have actually never fully retired, and are still occasionally sold through AG in “bundles.” They also usually make a comeback at Costco around Christmas time. This is probably due to overstock; 2017 was not a good year for AG. However, Z hasn’t gotten this treatment to my knowledge (excluding her dog and dog’s raincoat outfit- pretty sure you can still sometimes get that on the website), and is actually quite expensive to buy second hand (we’re talking $250 at minimum).
Z also was subject to a lot of manufacturing and quality control issues. Like a lot of 2017 dolls, she was a victim to perma panties, and her wig is apparently prone to frizziness, thinning, and breakage, even when just pulled out of the box.

G L A R I N G Historical Inaccuracies in American Girl (Because someone I'm following did a post on AG dolls today, and I'm ~shamelessly~ still into them)
Traditionally, Nimíipuu names given to children had to do with ancestors, place, and responsibility; and names were changed several times during a person’s life. Unless the baby was dying and had to be named very quickly, naming was done after great consideration, often by an elder or holy person. It’s unbelievable that any 18th Century Nimíipuu mother would name her baby for the first thing she saw after giving birth, Kaya'aton'my's name meaning "She who arranges rocks", the first thing her mother saw after giving birth.
Swan Necklace is the English translation of a Nimíipuu leader’s name, but one wonders why—and in some cases, how—the author came up with names for characters such as “Speaking Rain,” “White Braids,” “To Soar Like An Eagle,” “Light On The Water” and “Bear Blanket.” Did she research traditional Nimíipuu name giving or did she just think of random words that sounded good together? Good going, author.
A prepubescent Native American girl in 1764 would not have had a relationship with her father that included physical touching. Generally, girls stayed with their mothers or aunts and grandmas; and boys stayed with their fathers or uncles and grandpas. Unless it was an emergency, it is not likely that Kaya would have ridden behind her father on a horse, holding onto him. Nor is it likely that she would have “put her arms around his neck while he held her tightly against his chest for a long time."
Horse-stealing raids were not the same as raids to capture women and children, nor were they done at the same time. Nor would raiders feed captive children “only scraps from their meals.” Captive children were taken into adoption, often given to a family to take the place of children who had died, and treated as well as the other children. Which is kinda nice, when you think about it.
The “enemy tribe” is unnamed; in any event, people from horse cultures did not whip or otherwise abuse their horses. Previously owned horses were accustomed to being ridden and wild horses were gentled—not “tamed”—by their owners.
Hunters would not have brought back buffalo to camp and given the meat and hides to the women. Rather, the camp moved to the hunting grounds so that the women could butcher the meat right there.
Kaya’s sightless adopted sister, “Speaking Rain,” as all Native children, would have been taught to take care of herself. She would not have to hold hands while walking with someone, nor would she be constrained from picking berries or gathering firewood, nor would she ask questions about things she could figure out for herself.
The people all look alike, they are all the exact same tone of brown, and their facial and physical features are the same, too. In pictures where the women and girls are sitting, they’re sitting in the wrong position. Indian women in this time period would not have sat with their legs crossed, nor would they have sat with their legs up, hugging their knees.
The non-fiction sections at the end of the books, called “A Peek Into the Past,” are uneven. While some parts convey good information, particularly the boarding school story in Kaya’s Escape! and the story of the Dalles Dam in Kaya Shows the Way, other parts are rife with error. For instance, in Meet Kaya, the author states, “Early white explorers, including French fur trappers, mistakenly believed that all Nez Percé wore shells through their noses and gave them that name.” How could anyone look at someone and “mistakenly believe” him to be wearing a shell through his nose? The Nimíipuu people were called “Nez Percé” by the French because they pierced the septa of their horses’ noses so that the horses could breathe better and run faster.
While Felicity is often shown with her hair pulled back in a ponytail and tied off with ribbon, this is anachronistic to the era. Ribbon was expensive and rarely used on children's hair and the purpose of wearing caps was not only for propriety but because hair was not washed frequently and caps kept dust, dirt, and debris out of the hair. Felicity would have more accurately had her hair braided back or pinned up underneath the caps she wears.
The multiple illustrations of girls and women wearing pinner caps in day-to-day wear is inaccurate on several levels. Not only would pinner caps not have given protection, but they had long lapels down the back; also, pinner caps were no longer in fashion by the 1770s.
Kirsten is portrayed with bangs and has been since release; however, at the time, bangs were not fashionable for most girls or women with the prevailing style being center parted hair pulled back. Other girls and women shown in her series do not have bangs.
While Samantha was initially marketed by Pleasant Company (and later American Girl) as from the Victorian Era, Queen Victoria died in 1901 and the series starts in 1904. There is always a slight overlap and blending of eras in history; however, the attitudes, social airs, issues, technology, and fashions of the stories place Samantha more properly as Edwardian by British metrics or, more accurately, the American Progressive Era. This is especially seen in the blurring of class issues seen through Samantha and Nellie. In the full Victorian Era, it was considered in very poor taste and unrefined for the wealthy to interact or befriend those beneath their station (such as their servants) or consider them equals, or consider the needs of the poor and working class beyond pity and disconnected philanthropic donations. For example, Nellie and her sisters would have most likely not have been adopted by another rich family, but Gardner and Cornelia are considered very progressive for their time and do not care about their daughters' previous class level in both supportive and personally ignorant ways. The series can be perceived as Victorian due to Grandmary, who is very traditional in mindset; however, she does change her mind and opinions quite often throughout the series, showing a shift in attitude from Victorian to Edwardian if classifying American eras by British terms. The more accurate for the United States would be a change from Gilded Age mentalities to Progressive Era. American Girl now accurately refers to the time period as "Turn of the Twentieth Century" or "America's New Century," though they occasionally refer to the era erroneously as Victorian.
That's all I have to say. If you have anything I missed (that isn't Courtney's friend with HIV- Y I K E S), reblog and add it!
Also, are we gonna talk about how many characters are named Elizabeth? Elizabeth Cole, Melody Elizabeth Ellison, Elizabeth "Z" Yang, and Joslyn Elizabeth Kendrick. Really?

his eyes find the book resting in your hand, a page bookmarked. but when he slowly lifts it up from you, he notices a couple of other pages marked as well. curious, he reads the lines of the page you're currently on, eyes smiling and a smirk forms on his face when he realises what it actually is.
he notes the name of the book, future reading maybe or studying, whatever it may be – consider me, becka mack. when he reaches to place it back in your hand, or next to you, your eyes fly open, looking at the way his fingers clutch the book you were reading.
"w-what were you doing?"
"i could ask you the same, baby. tell me, why are certain pages bookmarked hm?" his fingers don't let go of the book between your bodies, his thumb tracing the spine of the book, and your knuckles. "her teeth tug on her bottom lip, lashes batting, and i’m already pulling the tie free...," he continues, when he manages to pull the book from your hand, reading the words on the page in front of him. "cute."
"it's not c-cute," you whisper, your eyes never leaving the way he's holding the book. "oh right, sorry. hot. do you want to recreate this hm? is that why you've bookmarked it?"
"n-no," you spit out, hoping he'd leave the book any minute, so that you can hide it from him.
"lies. i think i saw something about blindfolds. think we can try that tonight?"
