FilmNation sells out on ‘The Crow’ reboot in Cannes (exclusive)

The Crow reboot package lived up to pre-market expectations and proved to be a standout from FilmNation’s packed Cannes slate as heavyweight international buyers snapped up rights to the upcoming revenge thriller.

Bill Skarsgård from the It franchise and Deadpool 2��will star alongside British singer-songwriter FKA twigs for Rupert Sanders, whose directing credits include Snow White And The Huntsman, Ghost In The Shell and Foundation. Sanders will direct from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, the Oscar-nominated writer of King Rchard and the upcoming Creed III.

Closed deals include Entertainment Film for the UK, Leonine for Germany, Roadshow Films for Australia and New Zealand, Eagle for Italy, Nordisk for Scandinavia, California Filmes for Latin America, Tri Pictures for Spain, and Moviecloud for Taiwan.

In further trading, rights have gone for Middle East (Italia), Eastern Europe (Vertical), Benelux (WWE), Thailand (M Pictures), Malaysia (Square Box), Singapore (Shaw), Portugal (Pris), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), Greece (Tanweer), South Africa (Empire), India (PVR), Turkey (Yeni Bir), and Baltics (Acme).

Production is anticipated to begin in Europe this summer on the reimagining of the cult character based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel. Alex Proyas directed the 1994 feature version about a man who returns from the dead to avenge his murder and that of his fiancée.

Producers are Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida – whose Metropolitan will distribute The Crow in France – as well as John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman, who produced the 1994 original. CAA Media Finance represents US rights.

Sanders is represented by CAA, Grandview and Independent Talent Group. Skarsgard is represented by WME, Magnolia Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein. FKA twigs is represented by UTA.

FilmNation’s Cannes slate includes Vatican conspiracy thriller Conclave to star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini; Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Djimon Hounsou in diver thriller Last Breath; Michael Keaton starring in and directing the noir Knox Goes Away; and Paul Greengrass-Benedict Cumberbatch peasant revolt drama The Hood.

As previously reported Apple snapped up worldwide rights during the market to sci-fi romance package Fingernails starring Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley.

Creed sempre foi sobre legado e um chamado ao enfrentamento do passado. Se no primeiro filme, Adonis Creed enfrenta sua jornada com ajuda de Rocky Balboa para fugir da sombra do pai e no segundo o enfrentamento é de filho para filho, com Adonis lutando com Viktor Drago, cujo pai, Ivan, foi responsável pela morte de Apollo em Rocky IV (1985), ainda com ajuda de Rocky; no terceiro Creed, o chamamento continua, só que dessa vez sem Rocky e o passado que assombra Adonis vem na forma de Jonathan Majors, como Damian, um antigo amigo/irmão dos tempos de reformatório que a vida separou.

Creed III é dirigido dessa vez pelo próprio Michael B. Jordan, sua estreia em longas, aliás, e tem roteiro de Keenan Coogler e Zach Baylin a partir de uma história que eles co-escreveram com Ryan Coogler, diretor do primeiro Creed e do Pantera Negra. Após ser consagrado como grande campeão de boxe, Adonis se aposentou e prospera em sua carreira de sócio da academia com Duke (Wood Harris), seu antigo treinador e na vida familiar, com sua filha Amara (Mila Davis-Kent) e sua esposa Bianca (Tessa Thompson) que forçada pela condição da surdez gradativa, largou os palcos e agora tem um estúdio onde produz novos talentos da música.

Neste filme  o drama emocional como background dos protagonistas continua e tudo o que Adonis tenta esquecer e apagar é trazido de volta, lhe obrigando a lutar uma luta que não se restringe aos ringues, fazendo com que ele se feche em silêncios e isso vai lhe consumindo ao mesmo tempo em que Bianca não sabe mais o que fazer para ajudá-lo. 

Damian procura Adonis para entrar no mundo do boxe, que relutante aceita, mas ele não estava disposto a apenas reparar o passado, ele queria a vida que nunca teve, ou melhor, a vida que ele acha que seria dele se ao invés dele, quem tivesse sido preso fosse Adonis, pois enquanto Damian tinha sua liberdade e seus sonhos ceifados, Adonis seguiu sua vida cheia de privilégios, carregando um nome que, mesmo tentando esconder, lhe abriu portas sem muitos sacrifícios. É muito bem trabalhada a tensão entre eles nos momentos nostálgicos e amenos, dois barris de pólvora prestes a explodir.

A direção de Michael B. surpreende pelo domínio, assim como também todas as referências que traz. A opção por enquadramentos fechados focando nas expressões e olhares, muitas vezes emocionados, é comovente e apela de forma certeira para nossa empatia. Outro ponto positivo é a coreografia de luta que tá incrível, sem contar no som super realista. 

Não posso terminar estas breves observações sem antes mencionar o monstro que é Jonathan Majors, seja na sua forma física, expressão corporal ou atuação, ele tá se garantindo muito, consegue transparecer magistralmente toda sua personalidade forjada na raiva e frustração de uma vida violenta e solitária e no momento da inevitável luta entre os dois, o filme ganha contornos quase oníricos, me lembrando Touro Indomável (1980, Martin Scorsese) e a estética de animes que Jordan já deixou claro ser fã.

Só nos resta confabular e ficar na expectativa do que a franquia nos reserva agora, já que se desvencilhou de vez de todo o legado Rocky e Sylvester Stallone só aparece aqui nos créditos finais como produtor. Aguardemos.

Creed III estreia nos cinemas em 02 de março de 2023 e esta resenha só foi possível pelo convite de cabine da Espaço Z + Warner Bros. Pictures. Ah, se você quiser rever os outros dois para não ir totalmente às cegas para a sessão, tanto Creed quanto Creed II estão disponíveis no Prime VIdeo.
