Opinion on Zadr?

I have to address this here bc there is a whole ton of weirdness around this topic and I’m a IZ centered account. My answer is that there is Zadr I am okay with and Zadr I’m not okay with.

I’m not okay with Zadr when it is shipping the OG characters. The OG characters in the show are children (including zim) and it’s not okay when they are aged up purely for sexual reasons.

I’m okay with Zadr if it is a AU like mine where they aren’t the OG characters and are older for non sexual reasons. My AU is completely removed from the OG show. It uses elements, events, and characters however the characters are completely different from the show and are older. If I ever do art not related to my au I will address that they are children in the comment.

In my AU the characters never enter relationships until old enough to do so. However I won’t ever post anything sexual about any characters.

Yeah, I mean I’m not going to pretend to understand what’s going on in the mind of someone who is going through the tags of something they so actively hate, but it is very exhausting for me as a zadr enjoyer to have to run into them when I do. Blocking the anti zadr tag and variations of it mostly keep them off my radar, but some of them still slip through. 

And then sometimes you run into the people who have those really aggressive DNI banners in the general IZ tag that say things like “if you’re one of those zadr FREAKS don’t even LOOK at this post or I will KILL you” or some iteration of that. When all they really have to do if people tagging their work as a ship bothers them that much is put like. “Don’t tag as a ship” at the bottom. That’s part of what I mean about making the fandom hostile. Like, believe it or not, as a shipper, I can enjoy platonic and other non-romantic art of Zim and Dib for what they are. It seems intensely controlling to be trying to police how people tag their reblogs of your posts for their own blogs, but I can respect people’s wishes if they communicate it. Plus, I’m not really a content creator, so I guess I don’t really know what that’s like.

And you also find that level of toxicity within the zadr fandom with some people arguing that there are only certain ways zadr can be shipped. I don’t know, I just think that if you don’t like how some people are shipping zadr, you should just stay away from that. Plus, like. At its core, zadr comes from insanely toxic canon dynamics no matter how you frame it in fanworks. Like you still had to look at canon and say, “But what if I shipped these two?” So if you like zadr, it doesn’t make sense to me that you can even be arguing that one way is better than the other when at the end of the day, the source material is Invader Zim, in which Zim and Dib are deeply problematic characters.

I love the IZ/ZaDR fandom a lot. I do. And I am so deeply appreciative for all the creators in the fandom. A lot of IZ, specifically zadr, works have truly gotten me through some of the toughest moments in my life. That is not an exaggeration. But every so often, it gets really toxic in here, and it’s just so upsetting. Such is the nature of fandom, I suppose.

Just fyi the person who made that comic based on your headcanon about Dib's name just added a "zadr shippers dni" banner to the original post and has been ranting about every shipper being a dirty pedophile and not minding it is the same as supporting it and how they wish it was easier to block sideblogs and the like nonstop right after you reblogged it

I noticed when I couldn’t see my own reblog in the notes like all the others with comments attached. Which, I’m guessing means I’m blocked.

Honestly, it’s a disappointment and I’m considering deleting my reblog because I just don’t support that kind of mindset and hostility.

Nor the use of those banners.

At all.

Since, a common occurrence that happens is shippers don’t know ZiM is supposed to be over 100 Earth years till they’re told. And Johnen is constantly trolling the fandom (AND the crew of the show/comics/movie) with bullshit and has actually changed how old he’s supposed to be more times than I can count from what people have told me and research I’ve done.

For example: Originally, ZiM WAS also supposed to be a child like Dib based on this article someone forwarded me:

Rowling with retconning his own stuff post production with the recent tweets before the movies release about him NOT BEING A KID himself when previously it was stated he was also the equivalent of 16 year old he had plans of shipping with Gaz in the show???

And he ISN’T EVEN saying ZiM is OLD FOR AN IRKEN

In his tweets he said he was OLD IN HUMAN YEARS and NOT A KID even though, the article page I posted above, states he WAS originally.

And we’ve SEEN how and old Irken looks in the official comics. Including what ZIM HIMSELF WOULD LOOK LIKE OLD.

Everything is just such a complete mess.

I don’t see people pulling this shit with Vampires that are several hundred years old getting it on with a teenaged girls.

Nor have I ever seen any posts going off about the people I’ve seen/blocked shipping Dib and DWICKY. A HUMAN CHARACTER WE KNOW IS AN ADULT AND WILL ALWAYS BE 20 HUMAN YEARS OLDER THAN DIB NO MATTER WHAT.

How old ZiM actually is in accordance to how his people are supposed to age is a fucking mystery to me at this point

So I just play it by gut like most everyone else.

I’ve seen people say they view him as a teen, some an adult, some even an old man like in this one good-ass ZaDf fic I’ve read by @darkgunslinger called Saving ZiM

I myself see ZiM as a young adult barely out of his teens whose emotional and mental growth is stunted compared to other Irkens. And it’s something I’m actually going to be exploring in PAKet as it goes forward.

TL;DR:

I’m tired.

I’m tired of the drama involving this.

I’m tired of how many times on the weekly I have to hit “block” when I visit the tag because of people putting those STUPID and passive aggressive banners on their work when all I wanna do is look at some cute/awesome/good-ass art of the bug and Dib because the negativity just FUCKING DRAINS me and impacts my already poor mental health.

It’s gotten to the point I live in constant anxiety about being harassed over this personally myself.

My heart and my head seriously can’t take it.

I get kinda annoyed with all the people freaking out about the Zim x Dib ship. Yes, the creator said in a comment during part of a commentary on the episodes that Zim is an adult. I’m not hear to argue that it’s true or his trolling. I’m hear to say that most people probably did not see that interview before watching the series. When watching a series for the first time, you develop your personal canon. Most people’s canon was that the two were the same age. As a result, their fanfics and fanart come from a place of personal canon.

It seems hard for the ZaDr shippers to get why their ship is hated so much when most of the time they just see “if you ship ZaDr, you’re a bad person DNI.” Naturally a hostility forms from there. Like, I’m not saying you have to go and pull out every piece of evidence you have stating that the creator said Zim was an adult. But most people who ship ZaDr aren’t like, thinking of Zim as an adult at the time of meeting Dib. Zim is pretty darn incompetent and immature. Why would you watch him and say “yeah, he is a well put together man who pays his taxes and isn’t a moron in the least.”

Anyway, tldr. If you’re legitimately into the ship for the pedophilic content, uhhh.... well that’s pretty bad. But chances are, you just liked the dynamic in the show and want to see the enemy to lover slow burn. That’s just my take on the whole ZaDr discourse.
