Shurdh
Shurdh or Shurdhi is a weather and storm god in Albanian pagan mythology, who causes hailstorms and throws thunder and lightning. Shurdh was worshiped in northern Albania until recent times.
Shurdhi is thought to have been an ancient Illyrian god. In some regions of the Albanian Alps the weather and storm god was referred to as Rmoria or I Verbti; the latter is an Albanian adjectival noun meaning "the blind one" that was used in northern Albania also to refer to the fire and wind god. Shurdhi could be related to the sky and lightning god Zojz, and to the presumable sky and weather god Perëndi. Some of Shurdhi's attributes can be found in the mythological figure of drangue.
Tumblr media
The name Shurdhi appears to be connected with the Albanian term i shurdhët meaning "the deaf one", however, this link seems to be only a coincidence, since the name Shurdh is more likely a compound of *seuro, "water" (cf. Albanian shurrë "urine"), and *dos "giver/donor" (cf. Albanian dhashë/dha, "I gave/he gave"); his name thus means "water donor". A relation between the name Shurdh and the second part of the theonym Zibelsurdus found in ancient Thracian epigraphic monuments has been suggested.
The coincidence of the name of the weather and storm god Shurdh with the term shurdh-i "the deaf one" probably gave rise to the adjectival noun I Verbti "the blind one" or Shën Verbti "the holy blind one", which was used to refer to the weather and storm god in the Albanian Alps along with Rrmoria, and to refer to the fire and wind god in the Zadrima region.
The theonym Shurdh could be related to the name of the island of Shurdhah near Shkodër, and it is found in the oronym Maja Shurdh ("Shurdh Peak") in Kelmendi, and the toponym mi Shurdh, a region in Mirdita.
According to folk beliefs, Shurdhi travels using storm clouds which announce hailstorms when he arrives. He can be greeted and turned away with noise and gunshots. Baron Nopcsa identified Shurdhi with the ancient Thracian thunder deity Zibelsurdus, who was also greeted with weapons. According to Karl Treimer, a presumable basic form perejont-, "the striker", of the Albanian divine name Perëndi may be an epithet of the thunderstorm god Shurdh, who may have been a favorite god since he would have refreshed pastures and fields and was probably also of a warlike nature after this presumable epithet given to him.

Jerina Dushmani, Princess of Zadrima • Jerina Dushmani was a 15th century Albanian Princess, daughter of Lekë Dushmani, Lord of Zadrima. • She was renown for her beauty and intelligence and was often compared to Helen of Troy, as it was the desire for Jerina’s hand that caused a rivalry between two Albanian princes, Lekë Dukagjini and Lekë Zaharia, that ended in tragedy… • Shout out to my cousin @editaagashi for suggesting I illustrate Jerina. I love you! ❤️ • • • #ArtaTheArtist #Albanian #art #albanianartist #AlbanianArt #JerinaDushmani #lineart #DigitalArt #zadrima (at ZADRIMA GEOGRAPHIC ALBANIA) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg4mePTLrz3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @artatheartist • • • • • • Shemër • Sister-wife • The Balkans are such a melting pot of different people, cultures and religions, at times it's difficult to differentiate between your own language and your neighbor's. • Growing up, there were many words and phrases that I heard and assumed were Albanian, only to find out later on that they were actually Greek, Serbian, or Turkish. • "Ortake" is an example of one of these words. Our neighbor had two wives, and they were referred to as "ortake," or "sister-wives." • This is actually a Serbo-Croatian term meaning "companion" or "consort," but used in reference to sister-wives. The Albanian term is "shemër" • • • #thebalkans #albania #kosovo #malesia #montenegro #macedonia #çameria #albanianartist #albanianart #albanian #sisterwives #folkart #ortake #folkartist #zadrima #shkoder #mirdita #artsy #semantics #penandink #folshqip #inkdrawing #sketch #art #artist #drawing #illyrian #calligraphy #albanianlanguage https://www.instagram.com/p/B0eAtINHg8N/?igshid=mr3sj7b2h55o

Voiland, defense lead Grafton to dominant season opener
GRAFTON – Starting a football game off with a huge offensive play and forcing three first half turnovers will pretty much always put a team in position to win and win big.
Grafton’s football team was ready to go from the opening kickoff at home on Friday night against New Berlin Eisenhower, as the defense picked off two passes and recovered a fumble while the offense scored 24 points in the first half to establish dominance in a 33-7 victory to open the season.
“This was a good start to the season,” Grafton coach Jim Norris said. “We still have a lot of things we need to work on fundamentally from a structural standpoint. This is a great starting point. It’s great to get a win like this against a program like that and do what we do. We’re happy but hungry.”
“Tough night,” Lions’ coach Matt Kern said. “We’ve got a lot of guys who were making their first start tonight. We had some early nerves and just kind of a sloppy first half overall. Certainly a lot of things that we know we have to improve on out of this game, so we’ve got to go back to work next week and do that.”
Black Hawks’ sophomore quarterback Chase Norton found do-it-all senior Dominic Voiland down the right sideline for a 39-yard touchdown on the team’s first play from scrimmage following the first of those interceptions by junior cornerback Dylan Neumann. Voiland nearly doubled the lead when he ran a punt back for a touchdown late in the first quarter, but a holding call negated the score.
Grafton forced its second turnover early in the second quarter when, following an Ike completion over the middle, junior linebacker Preston Bonk forced a fumble that the Black Hawks recovered in Lions’ territory. Grafton established its running game on the ensuing drive, and after Norton ran left to convert a fourth down, Voiland scored on a 5-yard end-around to the right side to put the home squad up 14-0.
“That was in our game plan since day one,” said Norris of his team’s rushing attack. “I don’t think we got off script for the first couple drives and they did a good job of stopping what our base stuff was. We had to make some adjustments on the sideline. We established the run game and moved the ball consistently on the ground.”
Ike forced its first turnover later in the second quarter when senior defensive end Luka Zadrima recovered a fumble in Black Hawks’ territory. An 8-yard run and two 5-yard passes by senior quarterback RJ Connell, along with a Grafton personal foul penalty, got the Lions into the red zone. They capitalized when junior running back Max Ringwall took a reverse to the left for a 14-yard score to get within a touchdown.
“I think our defense did play hard,” Kern said. “Our guys swarmed to the ball and we work a lot on turnovers. That’s part of our identity as a defense. We’re certainly going to continue to encourage that and the guys know the effort level it’s going to take to make this happen. We’re going to keep pushing that.”
Norton immediately responded to Ike’s lone score. On the first play of the next possession, he hit senior running back Canon Pfaff on a screen pass to the left, who then darted through a hole for a 67-yard score to re-establish a 14-point lead. After that, an interception by Black Hawks’ senior linebacker Andronik Ovsepyan set up a 43-yard field goal by junior kicker/defensive back Silvio Lanza to take a 24-7 halftime lead.
“I just decided to put my head down and run,” Pfaff said. “Every single time, I give 100 percent for my team. I love this team and I would give the world for them.”
“We practice turnovers,” Norris said. “We have a turnover circuit; how to strip the ball, intercepting the ball, everything. We pride ourselves and our defense is hungry for it and it paid off.”
Lanza drilled a 32-yard field goal midway through the third quarter after a sack by Lions’ junior defensive tackle Sam Sidello. Ike later got its second turnover when do-it-all senior Tristan Obst jumped an underthrown pass near the end of the frame.
Voiland put the finishing touch on the victory when he took a bubble screen from Norton on the left side 19 yards to produce the final score.
“They are a product of hard work,” said Norris of Voiland and Pfaff. “The mantra of ‘Pound the Rock’ is what we do. They continue to swing the sledgehammer and we never know when a big play is going to break. They just keep swinging, keep working. They do it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. When you watch them and see what they do day in and day out, you understand it.”
