"Verbs and nouns of meaning in ancient Greek and Latin are polysemous, just as in the case of the English verb “to mean". Andreas T. Zanker considers how the ancient vocabulary could be used in different ways and investigates its development over time. In the first part of the book, Zanker argues for the role of metaphorical and metonymical transference in the creation of expressions of meaning; Greek and Roman authors used the same verbs to describe what inanimate things, including words and texts, meant/signified as they did of human beings in the act of meaning/signifying something. In the second part of the book, the author focuses on certain metaphorical extensions of this vocabulary and argues that they have implications for modern discussions of meaning, particularly in literary criticism."

[Prostrates self before you] If its not too much trouble. Tumblr user Catilinas sir. I came across a quote apparently from Ennius that "disrobing before one's fellow citizens is the beginning of perversion" and I wondered if you perhaps knew anything about it/recognised that from your adventures in poetry?
hi hello i've barely read any ennius (any-us if you will) so i alas did Not recognise it. but the magic of google tells me that the translation you found is the one used in zanker's 'the power of images in the age of augustus' which shamefully does not provide the latin or even a reference. wtf zanker. more google reveals that the latin is flagiti principium est nudare inter civis corpora, and that it is preserved in cicero's tusculan disputations. looks like cicero's talking about greeks being gay in the gymnasium. this article starts by quoting the line but it's almost 3am and i'm not going to read what it says! there might be more if you stick the latin in google scholar but other than being able to give you things you might already know to potentially look into i have no clue what's going on w it :/ ignosce mihi

Augustus & Political Religion
Religion was an integral part of Augustus' public image and propaganda, evolving throughout his political career. His moral positions, ancestry and politics were not only influenced, but justified by the Roman religion.
Many Romans claimed to have divine ancestry but Augustus was divi filius thanks to Julius Caesar's deification, elevating his status and allowing him to increase his authority and validity as heir to Caesar's power. Ovid's poem, from The Metamorphoses, demonstrated Augustus' lineage to Julius Caesar by listing both of their military accomplishments in parallel and including Venus as a highly maternal figure. The poem even states that Caesar, god and imperator, was "surpassed" by Augustus who is the very cause of Caesar's deification: "Therefore, in order for the emperor not to have been born of mortal seed, Caesar needed to be made a god." Caesar was loved by the Roman people and the elevation of Augustus above him creates a highly positive and religiously significant image of him that serves to emphasise the dignity and greatness of the Claudian line.
Tumblr media
Octavian used coinage to spread this same message to the common people of Rome in 43BC when he was in competition with Antony and the Battle of Mutina was fresh. The coin also emphasises their differences skillfully, with Julius in the laureate and Octavian bareheaded
As well as Augustus' personal identity being influenced by religion, he also used it to portray himself as a cultural hero, a bringer of the new age. Prior to this age, many (particularly the old and conservative) Romans felt as if the morals in Rome were declining, and this was commonly attributed to the lack of religion present in the Romans' lives, and their lack of piety. In Horace's 23BC poem 'Moral Decadence', he uses direct address in the vocative "Romans [...] you'll still expiate your fathers' sins till you've restored the temples." Here, he uses the "crumbling" religious monuments as symbolic of the religious decline's link to the moral decline, the "sins". As Paul Zanker wrote: "[Augustus] needed to create the impression that he was in a position to address the real causes of the ills that plagued Rome. Then he had to prove it."
Tumblr media
Augustus, who wanted to be known as pious and as someone who improved the religious and moral factions of Rome's identity "restored eighty-two temples" (according to the Res Gestae). This creates an image of him as a caring, generous leader, who wanted to improve the lives of the Romans and held their religious needs as a priority. On the Res Gestae's reliability, P.A Brunt & J.M Moore said: “These elogia would hardly contain any direct, untrue claims, since there would be too many people who could disprove them. […] However, the account of achievements might be highly selective.” Beyond this building program, we have accounts from Suetonius describing the revised and introduced laws on morality enacted in 17BC (leges iuliae): "for example on profligacy, adultery, chastity, and bribery." These laws show that his traditional and religious image was not merely an image; these laws lasted as an aspect of his legacy, according to Lin Foxhall who stated that they were "the starting point for law, behaviour and discourse [about] marriage and the family."
In terms of religion used as justification, Augustus relied greatly on the image of Pax, a goddess who had previously not been particularly integral to Roman culture. A coin released specifically to Augustus' armies in ~32BC (just before the Battle of Actium):
Tumblr media
In one hand she holds an olive branch, in the other a cornucopia. The message (one aided by religious authority: Pax, and the divi filius) of the coin is fairly clear to the legions of Augustus - he will bring peace, prosperity, and diplomacy through these wars. An altar was built to Pax, the Ara Pacis (13BC).
Tumblr media
It was commissioned (supposedly by the Senate) to commemorate Augustus' return from military campaigns in Gaul. Among the mythical and religious imagery is Augustus in a priestly procession as a reference to his position of pontifex maximus that he received after the death of Lepidus in 12BC. In fact, his whole family is depicted, pious and an exemplar of family life.

hello! water anon again here (here’s a little dagger for today’s special occasion 🗡)
oh…(!)…the interpretation of not allowing someone to leave even after they die….that too…..ashfhfjfkdl…..
And on the Pantheon! I can’t believe I just discovered this today:
“Among Agrippa's many building projects, by contrast, there are no temples, apart from one special case, the Pantheon, intended for the ruler cult.” (The Power of Images in the Age of Augustus, Paul Zanker)
…On one hand, there’s probably the practical element of allocating temple-building duties to Augustus for political image-making purposes (my guess). But on the other hand. What a special dedication……
Thank you for the Pliny paper! It’s pretty hilarious (and …endearing? Because, to a certain extent, same.) to see how Pliny tries to justify Agrippa’s errors in measurements …. “Agrippa is not actually wrong because nobody knows for sure.” Hghgnvjfkflf.
In return, here’s a paper that I stayed up till 4+am to finish reading — “The Afterlives of Agrippa and Maecenas” (by Alex Grigor) [https://researchspace.auckland.ac.nz/handle/2292/61857] It has a pretty good overview of several ancient authors’ portrayals of the two of them, as well as the views of several more prominent modern authors (e.g. Syme), and also how they’re depicted in several pieces of media (e.g. HBO Rome)!
And lastly, for a little bit of randomness, here’s a channel who does songs about ancient Romans in rap (and in Italian), here’s the one on Agrippa (https://youtu.be/El1bKu_Qj9g?si=KDe2h9k_C7rKGxds) (Channel name: Classic Sheee) (The lyrics are also available on Genius, and are pretty understandable after auto-translate if you don’t speak Italian!)
HI ANON SORRY ITS BEEN SO LONG FJVKVKBH. HAPPY (VERY BELATED) IDES OF MARCH YIPPEE!!!! thank you so much for the paper recommendation it looks so interesting! will be reading when as soon as possible. speaking of syme- started reading the roman revolution recently and his description of him as The Robust Agrippa has been bouncing around my very empty brain since then
that rap was. an experience. beautiful. 10/10.
don't have anything particularly academic to offer in return but !! i have just recently finished the october horse and. augh. you've likely already read it but if you havent my goddd it is weird and silly on occasion i recommend!

"Appendix I: Expressions of Inanimate Signification in Herodotus
p. 212-224
1 This book has of necessity been broad in range, and one thing that it clearly lacks is a case study of an individual author’s usage. This is due to my overall goal – to demonstrate the development of the vocabulary of meaning rather than to perform a synchronic analysis of its status at any single point in time. While certain authors have been mentioned piecemeal throughout, it will be useful to provide a study of an individual’s writing for the sake of comparison. Herodotus is in many ways an ideal subject for such an investigation: his history represents the first monolithic block of prose by an identifiable author to come down to us from antiquity, and so serves as one benchmark, at least, against which to measure earlier and subsequent usage.1 As such, it constitutes an important body of evidence for the process that I describe in Chapter 5, and provides a pendant to the writing of Plato, who has featured prominently in the preceding pages. Moreover, Herodotus engages with questions of signification with great frequency, and we might expect his vocabulary of meaning to be correspondingly rich.
2 The topic of signification in Herodotus has received much attention in recent years. Gregory Nagy has devoted a number of pages to the verb “σηµαίνειν” in Herodotus’ writing, particularly as we see it used in the first person: according to Nagy, the verb frequently implies that someone is communicating “from a metaphorically superior vantage point” and thus connotes a certain authority on the part of the individual transmitting the sign – be it a god, a poet, or Herodotus himself.2 Lorenzo Miletti, in his discussion of metalanguage in Herodotus, has considered the ways in which verbs such as “καλεῖν” and “δύνασθαι” were used to translate lexical terms from one language to another.3 Alexander Hollmann has provided lexicographical detail on further words in Herodotus that relate to communication and decoding, such as the verbs “φράζειν”, “λαµβάνειν”, “συµβάλλεσθαι”, “ἐννοεῖν”, and “εἰκάζειν”.4 In spite of this, it might be useful to lay out the vocabulary that Herodotus uses specifically for the signification of inanimate objects – what things mean, say, or show to an interpreter.5"
The first two paragraphs of the "Appendix I: Expressions of Inanimate Signification in Herodotus" of the monograph of Andreas T. Zanker "Greek and Latin Expressions of Meaning. The Classical Origins of a Modern Metaphor", C.H. Beck, Munich, 2016.
The whole Appendix can be found on the link that I gave above.

NOW we'll look at a single applications images,Įach APK file has every image it needs inside the RES folder of the source - this RES folder seperates all Screen Sizes on Different platformsĪs you can see, Android uses a seperate folder of images for every single screen size - comparing this to other software platforms, you can see that this takes about 14 times the space compared to Resizing Larger images with scaling. Here we can see that the Entire Animation on Start-up is actually a ZIP folder filled with Images - if you compare this to Windows using a simple BMP image - you'll start to see how the simple boot animation can take over 100 times the space requirements. First, add 1 Tablespoon of Butter into your cast iron pan and put it over your fire. It cooks up in one pan and serves about four. Let's begin by looking at the very first stage of Android - Booting.
