Fun fact: two of the biggest source ports for the classic ID Software games Doom and Quake were developed by trans women. Darkplaces for Quake by Ashley "Ladyhavoc" Hale and Zdoom by Marisa Heit.

To explain: The source code for most of ID Software's old games and engines including the Doom and Quake games are open source, which means that fans can use it to create ports for these old games that run natively on modern systems, including both Windows and native Linux support and enhancements that take advantage of modern hardware. They also enable you to run modern mods and level packs, like the memetic Darkplaces.wad that uses a derivative of Zdoom. Pretty nifty if you want some 90s shooter action. And you can thank trans women programmers when you do.

Blasphemous Experiments

More from my Heretic kick.

Blasphemous Experiments is, apparently, an assortment of unconnected maps stuck together in a collected episode; but they're so cohesive a whole, you wouldn't know this without reading the included .txt file.

Part of this is due to some excellent use of the Blasphemer texture set, which keeps things feeling incredibly fresh.

Gameplay is also pretty consistent in quality, the author throwing in some interesting setpieces and fights amidst some very tight ammo balancing and frugal dispersal of inventory items; things can get tight, although never unfair.

Two major things stuck in mind for me though; one's a mileage-may-vary matter, the other not so. Firstly, later maps get exhaustively-large, at least for my personal tastes -- some gamers like this kind of thing, I'd err on the side of bitesize maps if I had my way. Secondly, there is a lot of darkness; something the author was apparently aware of due to the relatively-high presence of the torch inventory item. Without these and GZDoom's dynamic lights, I doubt I'd have navigated the levels as well as I did.

These two points are all that prevent me from giving this a five. 4/5

I present my doom map project: Paradise - A Doom Tale

So this is a project I've been working on for a while for Doom, making use of various GZDooM features. I had been working on it for a fair while, took a break, and have resumed work on it, and it is Paradise - A Doom Tale.

To put it simply: It's a funny little thing where you're doomguy and you're going to a town called Paradise to kill all of the demons. The first map of it will be a good ole train map~!

There is also a lot of weird shit that you'll face and encounter, including:

Mario Smoking da weed

Strange salespersons

Denny's in weird places

And so much more...

It's still a major W.I.P, but the end goal of it will be to have a big hub area after the first level on the train, wherupon you're given the freedom to explore and then go to one of the three areas of which you'll fight memes, lots of demons, and nazis!

It'll be wild, I hope to have a demo out with the first map and a preview of the hub soon :)
