Carioca: Why isn’t the statue smirking at me?
Nestor: It isn’t smirking at anyone, they’re all just imagining it
Carioca: Three of us saw it, Nes. How do you explain that?
Nestor: [points at Paulista] Sleep deprivation. [points at Queijinho] Paranoid. [points at Jandaia] Delusional personality disorder.

Hi! I'm fairly new to the Disney ducks/birds fandom, and I was wondering, where should I look to learn more about Panchito and José's families? Is their anything hopefully already in or translated to english maybe? Sorry to bother, but you seemed like someone who may know where to start. Thanks! Love your blog btw!
Well hello! Welcome to the fandom
I am not an expert but I can try to explain some things!
lets start with Panchito first. For what I know, there isnt too much info about his family except this video
youtube
Thats were I got maria from, the design I made for her in that ask isnt canon btw!
Now jose? thats a big family, I found a little chart that has all the family members! (here you have it bigger btw)
Tumblr media
I thiiink there is some members that are not there but something is something! They appear in the Zé Carioca comics, sadly there isnt english translated versions. I kinda get the comics because Im spanish and portuguese is almost similar to spanish. But I only get the main idea of each comic.I can try to give you a little introduction to the family members I know thanks to others who told me about them, so here we go…
Tumblr media
Zico and Zeca are the ones in his family that appear the most in the comics. They are Zé’s nephews, they are basically the equivalent of Donald’s nephews. There is not much info about their parents either.
Tumblr media
Then his cousins, the appear in a couple of comics but are not usually seen all together. From right to left, Zé Paulista, Zé Baiano, Zé Pampeiro, Zé Jandaia and Zé Queijinho. Their names represent a place in brazil, just like Carioca means someone from Rio. Paulista is from São Paulo, Baiano from Bahia, Pampeiro from Rio Grande do Sul, Jandaia from Ceará and Queijinho from Minas Gerais.
Tumblr media
Special thanks to @teemble who was the one that explain me a lot about his cousins!
And thats all I know for now haha, I hope this helped and if something is missing or wrong you guys can reblog and add the things you know!

I didn't find many good references for the clothes of cangaçeiros, so I invented a little. Consider this a "reimagining"…

Hc's - Cousins of Zé Carioca
Baiano digital influencer Loves makeup and costumes love the Z&Z Black clothes Have dated some celebrities (I like to think he hates Mark Beaks haha) The one who randomly appears at parties
Jandaia Don't let anyone touch your hair accept any challenge Mess with your family and a fist comes in your face Certain people want your head (literally) The biggest of the cousins, losing to Zé de Itú Muscles, okay? Carry a gun around
Paulista know basic english The oldest among them Lots of coffee, lots of energy Teas are not your favorites Hates how everyone cares about their health (but at the same time..no?) Still carry a whip (sjhdjhafhafgh sla)
Queijinho The “big brother” cares about everyone The most “down to earth” of them Brother of Zé Pamonha, and he is his sunshine protector Love animals, obviously. Put on mascara. I love to read in my spare time Used to hauntings Animal friends, yes sir
Pampeiro Always bet with Jandaia Speak a little Spanish. bad diction Is the favorite cousin among older family members Various prizes for competitions The one who makes a "straight joke", but is not straight
At some point, they find Donald and Panchito, all suspicious of Carioca's "friends", but later consider them part of the family. Depending on how I send them, they might have magic too, like José Pantaneiro thinks they are crazy, so he doesn't walk as much as the rest of the family, but they love them…

Explanation/essay about Zé Jandaia (Zé Carioca's cousin from Ceará) and some explanations after the cut.
check out the other parts about the other cousins!
Okay, story time!
Why the hell does Zé Jandaia dress like that? Why does he look like he's going to kill anyone at any time? Come with me!
What are these clothes anyway?
They are cangaceiro clothes! Who are the cangaceiros?
Tumblr media
"The Cangaço represented a social movement that took place in the northeast of the country in the 19th and 20th centuries, where the cangaceiros, groups of armed nomads who lived in bands, showed dissatisfaction with the precarious conditions in which most of the northeastern population found themselves, since power was concentrated in the hands of the farmers."
Defending the author, Cangaço can be seen as banditry and crime, or just a revolt against the oppression suffered at the time.
Tumblr media
Lampião
"Without amazement, using violence, armed with shotguns, knives and daggers, the bandits went out in groups in different places in the northeast of the country, looting farms, kidnapping and killing farmers, imposing respect wherever they went."
Why these clothes? Everything has an explanation!
"The cangaceiros had their own style: they used leather clothes, including hats, in order to protect themselves, both from the coarse vegetation of the caatinga and from police attacks, since they were constantly persecuted. And that was how the cangaceiro movement surpassed a decade, demonstrating its strength, determination and dedication."
Tumblr media
Most famous cangaceiros:
Lampião, or Virgulino Ferreira da Silva And his wife Maria Bonita, or Maria Gomes de Oliveira (First woman to enter the cangaço. )
As for his personality is based on the concept of "Cabra Macho". What is it anyway?
"A man of the household, harsh, of few words and with an immense thirst for justice."
"Everything is solved with the bullet or the tip of the fishmonger. Men who deviate from these two solutions are called "fresh" (homophobia?!) and are considered the shame of the family. As for women, unlike in other regions of the country, in Northeast is stereotyped as “male woman”.
If you want to know a little more, I recommend watching the movie "O Auto da Compadecida" (A dog's Will) from 2000. It's a very fun and fast Brazilian comedy (curiosity, it was recorded in my state and I was able to visit the city where the filming took place!)
