Celebrating Maria Bethânia on her 78th birthday.

Maria Bethânia is by far one of the most important singers from Brazil and actually comes from a family of artists - her bother, for instance, is none other than Caetano Veloso. She started her carrer in 1965 replacing Nara Leão on the play "Opinião". Soon after, she released her first record through RCA, but it was at Philips she'd record some of her greatest success. She was part of the quartert Doces Barbaros alongside her brother, Caetano, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa - with whom it's widely speculated she dated for a while in the 70's. She also recorded with Chico Buarque, Zeca Pagodinho, Alcione and many others Brazilian icons.

She's considered the queen of MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and known as 'Abelha Rainha' (queen bee - eat your heart out, Beyonce). Maria Bethânia inspired every generation that came after her and it's a common sense in Brazil she's more than just a great singer/artist, she's a force of nature.
