In 1490, Leonardo da Vinci delved into the architect Vitruvius' theory on human movement within circles and squares, blending the human form with geometry.

He used male models and cadavers to study and highlight the “ideal body”, emphasizing perfect proportions akin to human anatomy. This exploration, rooted in the belief that "man is the measure of all things" as the philosopher Protagoras said.

This belief impacted the understanding of the female body, historically overshadowed by the male perspective.

This series challenges the traditional focus on the Vitruvian man, now exploring anatomy through abstract, expressive strokes with a queer approach.

Imagine if Vitruvius had been a woman and Leonardo had been Leonora – how would this have shaped our world?

I’ve been painting at a somewhat manic pace lately. I bought some Daler Rowney System 3 acrylic paint recently, and the smell of that particular paint brought me back to living in Malaysia in 1999 when I bought my first set of acrylics, they were the same brand and had that exact peculiar smell. I went through a phase of not liking acrylics at all, but now they are all I use. It’s weird how smell connects with memory. #FrancescoClemente @vitoschnabelgallery #INDIA until Jan.17, 2019 In his quest to explore the metaphysics of spirituality, mysticism, identity, and the self, Clemente has created a body of work in a variety of mediums that is often charged w eroticism & intimacy, rich in references, and expansive in its openness to interpretation. Opening at #VitoSchnabelProjects in New York, the exhibition “Francesco Clemente: India” takes its name fr the title of a new series of monumental canvases that continue Clemente’s lifelong dialogue w the cultural & artistic practices of India, where he maintains a home. The four paintings on view depict maps of the country’s geographic borders punctured with symbols that draw fr the itinerant experiences of Clemente’s life, and fr his passion for paradox & metamorphosis. Painted in a sensual palette of understated earthen hues, these compositions are accented w brushstrokes of brazen pink. In one painting, India is composed of a field of pink flowers whose petals are tinged w subtle hints of blue. A background comprised of white skulls – a motif Clemente returns to time and again – surround the outline of the nation, streaked w drips of paint. In another work, the map of India is covered by waves and inhabited by fish, while the Indian Ocean has turned into land. The third canvas depicts the nation as an apparition in the sky; mysterious pink clouds part to form the shape of the country through which the sun’s energy radiates a hypnotic white light. Finally, the fourth painting in the group is engulfed by a smoggy atmospheric haze.
