Shattered Memories
Tumblr media
The tent trembled in the breeze, dutifully shielding your bodies from the frigid midnight air. Hebra was always terribly chilly. You were bundled up in your Rito armor. The feathers stuffed inside the fabric kept the warmth in and held you in a lovely embrace.
It wasn’t the wind or cold that had awoken you. It wasn’t even the sound of a monster. Instead, it was your companion. You looked over at him groggily, turning on the oil lamp by your side. His messy blond hair clung to his forehead, damp with sweat. His breathing seemed rapid and his head quickly jerked from side to side.
You frowned, lifting you hand to try and gently stir him awake. Before your fingertips touched the fabric of his shirt he shot upward, “WAIT!”
You nearly leapt out of your skin. Leaning forward you gently grabbed his shoulder, already knowing what was about to happen. You couldn’t see his turned face, but you could tell he had fat tears puddling up in his eyes. He trembled, trying to catch his breath.
You scooted closer, wrapping him up in a tight embrace from behind. His hand gripped your wrists. His heavy breathing shifted to shuddering shoulders and hushed sobs. You could feel your heart shatter as he cried against you.
“It’s alright,” you cooed, kissing his shoulder to try and ease the anguish. He sobbed, choking on the tears and hacking horribly when he couldn’t catch his breath.
Some may wonder what the cause of this is. What could shake the hero so terribly?
Memories.
Over the years after the Calamity was finally sealed away and Hyrule saved, memories that didn’t belong to him began bleeding his mind. He would say they felt familiar, but they were from worlds unlike yours. Hyrule, but different. Your friends had the same names, but they weren’t the ones you knew. There were some names you hadn’t heard before; Groose, Midna, Malon.
The weight of these memories and the traumas stored within them drove your hero mad from time to time. These memories mixed with his already painful ones, bleeding and blending together so he couldn’t tell which were his and which weren’t.
So this is how these nightmares came to be. He would shudder awake in a cold sweat, having lost someone dear yet wasn’t his.
It felt as though hours passed when he finally calmed down. The hero turned as you let go, his eyes red and puffy. He wiped his tears with the heel of his hand.
“Are you alright?”
A simple nod was all he gave. You smiled sadly and clasped his hands in yours, lifting them to kiss away the cold. “If you ever need to talk about it, I’m here.”
A small smile tugged at his lips. “Thank you,” he murmured.
It was quiet for a long while, but then he slowly laid down and lifted the covers to offer you a place beside him. You accepted and scooted under the thick blanket, wrapping your arms around his waist to secure him. The rhythm of his breathing began to slow, suggesting he was dozing already.
You couldn’t begin to imagine how he felt. He had lost everything; his family, his friends. Now he was loosing people he didn’t even know. You prayed to Hylia to help ease his mind and let him rest for once.
Hopefully once the two of you found Zelda and put and end to the Demon King, that would happen.

People say there's a ghost haunting Hyrule Castle. The princess can't sleep.
-
I wrote a little ghost story for @bloodmoonzine! I had a lot of fun working on it and I am super super super excited for everyone to read it. there is only one day of preorders left, so get them while you still can!

HERE IT IS! i hope it works? it's exacly 100 words but if it's too long i can try with another snippet
… but her expression was more disappointed than sad. When she spoke, her voice was the soft fall of a summer rain, with the roar of a thunder. Failure, she said. I laughed. I laughed until tears began to run down my face, red as my mother’s blood. The woman spoke no more, nor did she move, as cold and unfeeling as ice. I looked at the pool, but my reflection was gone. All I could see was the bloodied bed, a boar’s carcass, and a one-eyed man with blood leaking down his face, same as mine. Red, red, all red.

Three Times Zelda Woke Link Up and The One Time He Woke Her (SS Zelink Oneshot)
Hey everyone! Here's some Skyward Sword Zelink for y'all!
the first time Zelda wakes Link up
"Link?"
Her hushed but urgent voice comes through the propped up window, along with a head of sunny blonde hair. It temporarily blocks out the shaft of light that's been moving across his room for the last few days.
"Liiiink."
He doesn't answer. Instead, he tucks his head beneath his pillow and blankets, and so Zelda starts shimmying between the wooden panel and the window because she's stubborn that way. She lands on the ground with a thud, and one blue eye peeks out beneath his make-do fort.
"Papa says to leave you alone," Zelda tells him as she's brushing off her knees. Then she stands up straight and puts her hands on her hips. "But you were alone all week. You need a friend, I think."
Another eye peeks out and the blanket inches off his face.
Her papa, the Headmaster, has been really good to Link so far. When he heard what happened, he ran over and all but carried Link back to the academy. He gave him a really nice room of his own with a really comfy bed and lots of stuff just for him.
But Link brought his own pillow because he wanted something from home, and he didn't let it go for the whole walk or even for the whole week.
Every day, the Headmaster comes to check on him, and Henya brings him food from the cafeteria. But Link usually eats only a bite or swallows just a spoonful, and every day, Henya gives him an earful when she comes back and collects a full tray.
Zelda is the first friend who's come to see him. Not that he doesn't consider the Headmaster or the chef his friends or anything, but Zelda somehow always knows what to say or do, even before Link figures it out for himself. Maybe he can't say for sure because he doesn't have a lot of friends to begin with, but Link thinks that she's the best kind of friend a person can have.
When Zelda leans over to one side, she's looking at him sideways and her blonde hair almost touches the floor.
"You don't want to be alone, do you?"
It's not that Link wants to be alone. It's just that he doesn't want anything at all.
Or maybe, actually, he does want something, and that's for his parents to be there. But they're gone and they're not coming back – they can't come back, and maybe he should just be alone instead.
Link doesn't say this. He won't say this because Zelda's just being nice. She's always nice. And he wants to be nice to her too, but he doesn't feel like he can right now and so instead he stays quiet.
"Well, you shouldn't be alone, anyway."
She marches over the carpet and he tucks his legs really quickly right before she can plop herself onto them. When she sits on the end of his bed, Link sits up, wiping the wet streaks on his cheeks with the back of his hands, and faces her.
"Do you wanna go for a walk?"
He shakes his head.
"Do you wanna play a game?"
He shakes his head again.
"Do you wanna talk?"
He pauses for a moment before he shakes it once more, this time a little hesitantly.
Her lips twitch and Zelda nods sagely, in a kind of way that's too wise for her age. "Fine then. I'll talk, you listen." He doesn't protest to that, at least, so she must take that as encouragement.
"I lost my mama too. It's just me and papa. I don't remember her much. Sometimes I wish I did, but sometimes I think that would make me sadder.
"But you lost both your mama and papa, and you must remember them lots. It must be very hard. It was hard for me. I mean, I know it's not the same but-"
"It is," Link cuts in and her head whips to him. It's the first time he's said something in a long time. It sounds kind of like he's sick, his voice quiet and raspy, but he's speaking. It's a start. "I mean…you lost someone too. I'm sorry."
Her lip tremors. It looks like she wants to smile or maybe cry. The thought makes his tummy twist. Instead, she just nods. "Yeah."
"Are you okay?"
"Yes. I just - I'm worried about you." She smiles this time and the way it brightens her entire face makes his chest feel somehow less tight and gross. "But you know what? You're really brave."
Somehow, for the first time in a while, Link feels okay enough to smile. All week, he's felt nothing but tired and sad. But when Zelda came in, it was like she brought the sunshine with her.
With a firm nod, she suddenly decides, "I think you and me will be okay."
Something in his heart tells him Zelda's right.
the day of the Wing Ceremony
For a moment, there's nothing but darkness – darkness that's become too familiar for his liking. He's been here before, and the same loneliness that always accompanies it prevails.
A low tremor rumbles beneath his feet before building and building, then bursts forth all together. A familiar beast emerges, dark like the night and scaly like some sort of reptilian monster.
Link doesn't know why he would be familiar, or why for some reason he knows distinctly it is in fact a he and not just some nameless, heinous creature. But he is and he does.
There's a flash of white light and he instinctually blocks his eyes with an arm. A voice that does not match the beast – and is definitely not Link's voice – accompanies the light and for some strange reason he's sure it's someone safe.
It sounds mechanical almost, so precise and monotone that it – she couldn't be a human, but she's urgent and she's telling him about some sort of quest. He can't help but feel like he's seen and heard all of this before.
A squawk shakes the earth and – no, that's not right. That's definitely out of place.
Link stops, whirls around, and –
His back hits the floor with a resounding thud.
A golden beak sticks through his window and black beady eyes stare down at him in a way that's almost judgmental. Zelda's Loftwing cocks its head before spitting a letter at Link with full force and the wooden panel slams shut upon its departure.
Really, Link should expect this by now.
Rubbing the back of his head, he picks up the letter and pushes himself to his feet. If Zelda's choice of messenger didn't give away her identity, then he'd know by her signature seal and the floral scent of the envelope. It smells so much like her it's like she's in his room.
Link feels a smile creeping on his lips as he reads its contents. Even on such a special day like today, Zelda's found a way to wake him up. She's been preparing for the Wing Ceremony all month, at least, and he's sure she's busy even now. She's been sewing and singing and rehearsing, and she gets excited every time she speaks about it and it makes him excited too.
By the time he's done reading, the smile has taken over his face and he starts to make his way out the door.
Link didn't know it then, but that would be the last time Zelda woke him up for awhile.
the first time they sleep together
Golden light is pouring through the foliage on the roof. It filters through his closed lids and so he scrunches his eyes closed with a tired groan. Really, Link thinks the sun should rise an hour later. Morning light is nearly as insistent on waking him up as a certain someone.
He hears a faint giggle. Speak of the goddess.
Link frowns, because he knows Zelda's made her way over to his side of the Tree of Life and she's going to make him get -
She throws a leg over his lap and Link stiffens. His eyes flash open. Zelda’s right there.
Casually wrapped in a sheet - nothing but a sheet - she sits astride him. Her blonde hair is messy and gleams like melted gold in the daylight. He's not breathing – his breath lodged itself somewhere in his chest the moment he first opened his eyes.
"I hope you didn't think I'd let you sleep in today just 'cause I kept you up all night."
Heat floods his face. He expels a rather big puff of air.
"Don't tell me you forgot."
"No -" he says quickly, and then his mouth clamps shut.
But moments later, his face softens. He does remember – he remembers everything. Last night was probably the most amazing night of his life. He was able to hold Zelda and kiss her and be closer to her than ever before. He almost can't believe it really happened.
Link puts his hands on her waist because he has this inane need to touch her and he's not sure where else he ought to put them. It makes her smile, so he finds himself smiling back. Zelda's really good at making him smile.
She sweeps her hair over one shoulder and dips her head, and she kisses him. It's languid and lazy, but there's something about it that makes his stomach flip.
Without even thinking, his hands slide down her thighs. They're partially uncovered by the sheet and they're so soft and she's so warm, and Link feels himself really waking up. Zelda makes a content sound against him so he thinks he must be doing something right. She plants one hand on the mossy ground beside him and the other on his shoulder.
After many lazy kisses, her tongue slides across the seam of his lips and he welcomes it. For awhile there's nothing but Zelda and her lips and her thighs and sunlight. When she draws back, he nearly whines, but she doesn't go far at all.
"Hold me," she whispers, somewhere between a request and a command, but Link has no complaints.
One of his hands cards through her hair, which is also so soft, and cradles the back of her head. Link pulls her closer and leans her forehead against his own. "I love you," he murmurs. It's not the first time he's said it and it won't be the last.
Zelda breathes out the most joyous laugh and it comes with the brightest smile. "Prove it," she dares.
And so he does.
the one time Link wakes up first
"Zelda."
She turns over, swinging an arm onto Link's side of the bed.
It's still strangely new for them to share a bed. But Zelda's father didn't feel right about them staying in the Sealed Temple and sleeping on mossy stone floors, and he was right. They were kind of used to treating it like a home and always returning to it in between explorations of the surface.
But really, since they're staying here indefinitely, it's probably good to have a house. The villagers were gracious enough to build them a small home that resembles the ones up in Skyloft, and though they built two bedrooms, the couple were quick to make use of just one.
Zelda expects for her arm to fall over Link so that she can cuddle up to him, and she frowns when it lands flat on the mattress instead. She can hear his laugh, beautiful and fleeting like windchimes, but it comes from the opposite side of her.
She turns over again and her eyes peek open, and Zelda instantly finds Link's figure very much perpendicular to her. Her brows furrow before her eyes properly open, and even then, she has to rub her eyes and blink a few times before she can actually see.
And when she does, Zelda thinks she's still dreaming. She must be dreaming.
Not only because Link is sitting there at her bedside, very much awake at what must be the crack of dawn. But because he's holding a ring box and there's a very beautiful ring cushioned within.
Zelda jolts upright and her breath is sucked from her chest. Then she finds she can't move another inch.
His beautiful blue eyes are looking up at her with utter devotion – the kind he reserves just for Zelda, not even for the goddess within her that might actually seek devotion - and maybe even a hint of nerves.
"We've been making promises all our lives," he starts, and by the second word, his voice already starts to quiver, "and right now I'm going to make some more."
Zelda wants to nod or smile or really do anything that shows that she's listening to his every word but she really can't move. She hopes he can see in her eyes how enraptured she is.
"I promise to always be your best friend," he says. "I promise to protect you and take care of you and to hold your hand.
"I promise to build the family you've always wanted and to be a good father to our kids. I know that I'll love them so much because you'll be their mother.
"But mostly I promise that I will never stop making promises to you and I will do whatever I can to keep them. All I ask is that you promise to marry me."
Of the two of them, he's the quiet one, and yet when he chooses to speak, he manages to make Zelda speechless.
Her hands are on her rosy cheeks and tears blur her vision, and she's trying but failing to hold them back. They start to roll down her cheeks, unbidden, and it makes Link's own tears start to fall. A sort of breathy laugh bubbles out of him.
"Link," Zelda says raspily, and a hiccup of a sob escapes her. "Tell me I'm awake. Tell me I'm not dreaming right now."
He swallows and nods, his eyes watery and brilliantly blue. "You're awake," Link whispers. "You're here with me."
Zelda starts laughing, and she thinks she must look pretty ridiculous crying and laughing, but Link's doing the same and he looks so beautiful. She leaps out of bed and topples him, and he grunts as he's knocked to the ground, but he's still laughing.
Her legs are still tangled in the sheets so she inadvertently drags them down with her. Link tugs at a coverlet and throws it upwards, and it falls over them slow and breezy like a feather. In the pocket of space, they're tucked away from the rest of the world; even tawny morning light just barely seeps through.
Zelda leans in to kiss him, but their lips are salty from their tears and it keeps getting interrupted by one or both of them laughing, and so eventually she draws back.
Love is alight in her eyes and they're locked onto his. "I promise," she murmurs. Link takes a trembling breath. "I will marry you."
With endearment in his eyes, Link tucks a lock of hair behind her pointed ear. Then his hand sweeps back and cups her face, his thumb idly stroking her cheek and wiping away any stray tears.
As he pulls Zelda in to capture her lips once more, he thinks back to the first time she woke him up and how right she'd been back then. They'll be okay.
Zelda was always the wise one, after all.

mipha’s happy ending is her death.
had she managed to survive waterblight ganon, she would have been the last champion standing. there would only be one divine beast firing at calamity ganon, but without link there with the master sword to do any real damage she’s just making it easier for zelda to snatch him up and put him on a divine leash, and who’s to say the other three beasts wouldn’t turn on Ruta in an attempt to snuff out the one that got away?
but if she does make it out, leaving Ruta on standby or whatever makes sense, link is dead. zelda is trapped in the castle. the other three champions are ghosts bound to cold, mechanical tombs that do nothing but wait for new victims. she can’t kill three blights if she barely survived her own. she can’t possibly kill the calamity.
so mipha goes back to Zora’s domain, hugs her father and Sidon, and hears from the Sheikah scientists that the Hero has been placed in that cave they found on the Great Plateau, that it’s going to heal him better than her Grace ever could, and that he’s going to wake up soon and retrieve his sword and save all of Hyrule.
mipha holds sidon closer and mipha waits, because she knows link, she loves link, and he always comes back. he never leaves a quest unfinished.
the fields burn, more people die from the Guardian attacks, lynels armed with shock arrows take over most of the woods near Zora’s Domain, and mipha waits.
and waits.
and waits.
a hundred years pass. sidon has grown so tall, even taller than her, and she wonders if the sheikah scientists were lying. that woman, Purah, hasn’t contacted her in ages, and the last she heard of Impa, she could barely walk a few feet without needing her cane.
a lynel has made its home atop shatterback point. mipha would feel more confident in taking it down if her Grace wasn’t waning after a century of use healing anyone that comes to her, and if she didn’t still feel the phantom pains of Waterblight’s spear as it pierced her torso. she’s too afraid to pick up a trident, now, because all she can hear is her own screams echoing off of Vah Ruta’s walls.
then link walks right into the throne room and asks after Divine Beast Vah Ruta. why doesn’t he have to worry about this one? why isn’t it infected like the others?
mipha runs up and engulfs him in a hug, tears streaming down her face, and when she pulls back to look at him there’s no recognition in his eyes.
he doesn’t remember her. he doesn’t remember anything. all he knows is that he has to save his princess.
mipha has known that the two of them were meant to be together since she was born. she grew up hearing the legends of hyrule’s royal family, she knows how intertwined their souls are, but still she held out hope that maybe once, just this once, a different princess would catch his eye, maybe one that wields a trident instead of a Sheikah Slate.
but now he doesn’t know anything about that. he doesn’t know anything about anyone, and still the only thing on his mind is zelda. mipha’s happy for her friend, she’s happy that zelda is the one who gets to have him if it isn’t her, that zelda has found someone so devoted, but it doesn’t stop the ugly, jealous part of her from rearing it’s head just a little bit.
she points link in the direction of shatterback point, and watches his back disappear around the corner. he comes back thirty minutes later with twenty shock arrows and a new sword and shield.
he’s going to gerudo town next, he tells sidon, because boys will be boys and the two of them have bonded over the week he’s spent in the Domain. he wants to learn more about Urbosa, and more about Zelda by extension. Those two were close, weren’t they?
mipha wishes him luck. he leaves. so she waits.
and waits.
and waits.
a month later, a message from the Chief of Gerudo Town reaches Zora’s Domain. the Hero of Hyrule went inside of Divine Beast Vah Naboris two weeks ago, and he hasn’t come out. their scouts can confirm that Naboris is back on the prowl, kicking up a sandstorm as it searches for its next challenger.
without mipha’s power to give, without her Grace to guide him, without her to save him, link has died again. they can’t afford to put him back in the shrine of resurrection, who knows how long he’ll sleep this time, and Zelda’s power is growing weaker by the day-
if only she hadn’t survived, mipha thinks. if only she were a ghost, too, and if only she could offer him her Grace so he would survive Thunderblight Ganon. At least he would be alive. At least she would be happy to stitch his skin back together and shove the life back into his body for as long as he needs her to, it would be her pleasure.
mipha’s death is her happy ending, because at least in death she gets to stay by link’s side.

I might get hate for this but is it just me who absolutely hates how Wild's character is written in fanfiction?? Especially Linked universe fics, Jojo wrote him so well and I feel like no one really pays attention to how mature he really is, he's a hero like the other Links, not someone who needs to be coddled?? I'm only saying this because nearly everyone focuses on him(for good reason,he's super cool and his game is best selling so I get it) but I feel like everyone ruined his character a little over one cutscene of him eating rock roast and some scars and memories??

“I can’t do this… You deserve happiness… you deserve to have your youth…. But… I’m scared of what will happen if I let you go…” Her words were filled with pain and fear. Fear of the known and the unknown. “Zelda…” he was still holding onto her shoulders, but now gently wrapped his arms around her. The young royal saw that kind and caring face of his and remembered their youth. The little boy who was listening to her and made her laugh with masks from the market. Could she really take away the childhood of this adorable little boy? Maybe the Zelda of the past would still be open to be happy with him. And yet the thought was too much. She cried into his shoulder, trying hard to contain herself, but it was impossible. The tears refused to stop. All while Link still held her. Seeing this scene unfold, Link’s trusted companion Navi flew around them, leaving a trail of sparkles in her wake, like a line circling around the pair. “Princess, I.. I don’t know what is happening, but I’m here for you.” “Link..” She looked into his eyes. Throughout all of this, she was making choices. For her Kingdom and for him. But did Link ever have a choice?
Happy Valentine's Day! What you are currently witnessing is an official artwork AND a writing snippet from The Legend of Zelda: Remnants of the Past - Chapter 1. Coming very soon!
Tloz: ROTP is a sequel to Ocarina of Time, in the same way that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are in their respective timelines, with this one being set on the 4th timeline, where Zelda ended up not sending the Hero of Time back to his childhood. While ROTP is actually mainly the story of a new Link and and a new Zelda, their adventure is set in a world created by Link and Zelda from Ocarina of Time, who rebuilt Hyrule in their image. So Oot Zelink is canon to this 🥰

Got another evil au idea, but I don't know how I want to do it... vote time!
Keep in mind that the results will make things take different amounts of time. I have a LOT of wips I'm juggling, which is why I'm uncertain in the first place. I think drawing will do the idea the most justice, though. Any opinions would be appreciated!

Grog has noticed a number of peculiarities in Kakariko Village. Eerie lights flicker in the mountain valley. Murky black water fills the old stone well that no one uses. Golden spiders spin their webs under the eaves of abandoned buildings. Little does Grog know that the legendary Sheikah of Kakariko still live, and that they are watching.

Inspired by this art, go give the artist @s-kinnaly some love. It’s a beautiful piece💜. I used it for spicy inspiration 😳 I hope yah don’t mind.
Little Hero
Link likes sleeping in the wild, less monsters now that the calamity has been averted, less dangerous ones at least. He likes finding a place high in a tree on a branch big enough to keep him from falling or in the natural little nest of roots, just big enough to be comfortable. The sun is just starting to rise, breaking through the foliage when the sheikah slate on his hips starts pinging.
He frowns, rubbing sleep from his eyes before finally giving heed to its beckoning call. He frowns as he opens it, the map taking up the screen, a golden yellow marker blinking over the castles. That cannot be good, he better go check it out.
Link checks on Zelda first, looking through the window to find her sound asleep, half off her bed but safe. She has been working with Purah most days as of late, probably will not even notice he is gone until this evening. Plenty of time for him to get back before she can start to worry.
Link uses the sheikah slate to travel to the shrine within the castle grounds. Some monsters have slipped in again, nothing he cannot handle. A few Keese and chuchus, all easily dispatched.
He uses the map to guide him, following it down further and further to where he fought Ganondorf. He does not know what he is expecting to find down here, what could possibly make the sheikah slate go off. Maybe something, more likely someone messing with Ganondorf’s remains?

Stone Fate Chapter 1 is up on Ao3!! Here's an old sketch of the duo to celebrate!!
Expand for a small snippet!
Link’s hands raise to his face. His fingertips lightly touch skin; but that hardly seems to be what he expected. To have opened his eyes to see the Lost Woods, something is certainly missing from him now. From over his thumb, he sees the faintest orb of blue light peek through into his blocked vision. Quickly swinging his dirt-covered hands to his side in balled fists, the boy darts all of his attention to the little projection. He does not say a word. Rather, he springs into a sprint after the leader. After all, he may just end up vanishing otherwise. The mist, unnoticed, thickens at the follower’s sides. It twists and bends the path he blindly takes. The invisible trail weaves back and forth for a time either far too long or far too short, and by the time he reaches the end, it leaves him dizzy. Much to his surprise, however, the sight that awaits is one even his spinning head can recognize: the familiar setting of a cracked stone pedestal covered by overgrowth. Twisted vines and roots reach up and overwhelm the shape while blue-and-white buds gather at the edge. He lifts his eyes, expecting to see the face of his guardian. Rather, his wide eyes rest on the glass-like face of a blue spirit. In her presence, the flowers bloom.
“Master. Master, she is waiting for you.” The spirit begins, her tone blank yet smooth like the echoes of rushing water. “Your fate has long been laid out before you… and now, the time has come. Do not keep her waiting, Master… Link.” Link blinks a few times, pointing at himself as if the stranger could possibly mean a different “Link.” “Link.” The hollow figure’s voice suddenly changes entirely as she continues. “Link. Link. Link!” She mimics, repeating near infinitely, until—

Battle Scarring
You can find this fic, and many more, on my ao3!
_______________________
An arrow whizzed through the air, striking the hay bale target with a distinct "thwack" before it fizzled with a slight crack of electricity, then stopped.
Zelda had wanted to learn how to use the shock arrows properly since, as Link learned the first time he used them, firing them wrong can result in the user becoming just as damaged as the target. That, and she felt like they were the type she should use. She found she had a knack for the electrically charged arrows, and they made her think of Urbosa.
Link had worried about her using such destructive ammo when she was still new to the bow, but he was able to craft a shock arrow that was far less devastating for her to start with. He watched her pull another from her quiver and load it. "You're a quick learner. Last week, it would have hit the pond." He pointed at the small body of water that was just behind the target.
Zelda shook her head at the memory. "Goddesses… all those poor fish. Serves me right for forgetting that electricity conducts rather well in water."
"It happens." He flinched slightly at the sound of another charged arrow hitting its mark, and crackling with electricity. "I promise you whatever mistakes you'll make with that thing will be nothing compared to what I managed to do with mine."
"Have you forgotten I kept watch?" She giggled. "I saw some of the ludicrous things you managed with those bomb arrows of yours. I'm surprised you came out of it all unscathed."
"Mostly." He pulled up his right sleeve and pointed at a small patch of skin that was warped and hairless compared to the rest of his arm. "That's what happens when you mix up your bomb arrows with your regular ones, then fire at close range. Kind of surprised this is all I walked away with."
Zelda sat the bow down in the plush grass, and walked over to him, looking at his arm. "I'm shocked your eyebrows didn't come off with it. I remember that fight. You were trying to dispatch a bokoblin, right?"
"Yep." Link cringed at the realization that she had seen that. Of all the things she had seen him do, it had to be that.
The encounter had originally terrified her, but now she did her best not to laugh whenever she thought of it. She could still perfectly recall Link's high-pitched screams of terror. "You scared me to death, you know. Still do. I've probably got gray hairs from keeping watch over you." She placed a finger on the scar, feeling the formed ridges. "How have you walked away alive from most of these instances?"
" Most ." The memory of the guardian's laser gnawed at him before he shook it away. "Experience, pure luck, and a lot of healing elixirs."
"And plenty of calls to Mipha's power, I'm sure."
"I'm sure she's getting sick of saving my ass."
"Goddesses, I miss that woman." Zelda took another arrow from the quiver and set her sights back on the target. One final shot before resting. She fired and watched as the arrow hit the small, central dot in the center of the target. Bullseye. "What other scars have you collected from your various… excursions?"
"Misadventures?" Link corrected.
"Scuffles, if you will."
He had to think for a moment. Sure, there was no shortage of scars on his body, but he had forgotten the stories behind most of them. After a while, all the bokoblin bites and lynel scratches just blended together. He thought about the prominent one on his left eyebrow, which sliced right through it. "Got this one swimming with Sidon, one day."
Zelda raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"Yeah. He had me on his back, and I thought it would be funny to try and stand up. You know, like a surfboard. I guess…"
Zelda sheathed the bow, biting back a grin. "I think I missed this one. Do tell."
Link lowered his head, and his ears twitched, slightly abashed. "I… slipped off of him and got sent careening right into a rock. Got knocked out cold and he had to fish me out of the water." He blushed slightly. It wasn't one of his finest moments. The red hue deepened when he heard Zelda snort. "I could have been concussed, you know!"
"Nothing your brain hasn't already been through I'm sure."
"Hey-!"
"And this one?" She said, pointing to a cut in his ear. She used the tip of her finger to trace it slightly, and it made his ear twitch.
"Careful, it's sensitive." He perked them slightly. "Hate that one. Yiga scar. I was fighting one and his blade just barely scathed me, but I was left with… this. Makes it harder to hear out that side." The blade had taken out a sizable notch in his ear. Hylian ears were designed in such a way that they could hear the slightest movements. "Now I mostly just rely on my sight, and gut instinct."
Zelda's own ears mimicked his movements: a habit that had grown on her since the calamity. "I… definitely don't remember that one. I would have tried to help. Somehow."
He could see her slight frown. She probably couldn't have stopped it even if she wanted to, but, Zelda being Zelda, of course, she would still feel guilty. "Hey, It's alright. Just another scar. Believe me, there's worse and better." He said, pulling the collar of his shirt down slightly, exposing yet another blemish, and he started to talk about a lynel that had caught him off guard while he was riding away from the stables.
She learned very quickly that he was absolutely riddled with scars. She must have been busy when most of these happened because only a few of them jogged any memories. What had he gotten into? "My word… There are so many! How did I miss all of these?"
Link pulled his shirt back down over his torso, covering himself, and all the little imperfections, back up. Zelda mourned the loss. "You were pretty busy, you know, saving the kingdom and whatnot. I'm not the only one with scars. You got your fair share too." He gestured at her thigh. Beneath her pants, Link knew of a large mark she had earned when she launched herself between him and a bokoblin's mace. She couldn't walk for a week, and it had barely missed a major artery.
"That I did, but mine pale in comparison. You've been through… so much." She lightly grazed her hand over the covered mark on her thigh, the memory burning in her mind. Link had scolded her for what felt like hours for charging to his rescue like that. No matter. She would gladly do it again.
Link took a few tentative steps closer, close enough to catch her hand in a gentle cradle, rubbing his fingers along the back of it. "We both have. No more one than the other." Feeling bold, he brought her hand up to his lips, placing a gentle kiss on her knuckles, making her smile and blush. "We've come a long way, princess."
"That we have, Hero."
It was more than just the physical and mental scarring. Link was Link, he had always had his fighting spirit, but after Ganon's defeat, Zelda had accompanied him on pretty much every journey, hike, and battle he had gotten into. Though she was more than winded after the first few, she quickly learned to keep up. She had mastered her way with a sword, even finding her own technique, and was more than skilled with her power, now that she had a hundred years of usage on it. She was turning into a knight of sorts too.
It was more than her skills. Her body had changed too. Her physique closely matched that of Links, she just wasn't as skinny, and scars were starting to make themselves plenty. Hell, she had a new one forming on her calf from falling off her horse a week ago, and her hair was cut short, something she did immediately after a Yiga clan member had yanked her to the ground by her long ponytail. He had nearly sliced her in half while she lay there.
Her hand still in his, he gently pulled her towards a nearby tree, its orange, and amber-colored leaves just beginning to fall. A telltale sign of the season's change. He spun her around slowly before placing his other hand on her waist, bringing her close. A little trick he had learned a hundred years back, waltzing in the ballroom. She admits that was the first time he had, literally and figuratively, swept her off her feet. "You were once a princess without a single scrape on your body. I'd call you fit to be a warrior now, or the most beautiful knight I've ever seen."
She giggled, still pressing close. "Only because of you. You kept me safe all those years ago. You still do. Though, I don't think I'd quite recognize myself now. All bruises, bumps, and muscles."
Link had let go at this point, stretching his arms as far as they could go, then leaning back against the tree's rough-barked trunk. "Man, what would that young princess in Hyrule Castle think if she saw you?" He said, referencing a young, less experienced Zelda.
"I think she'd faint."
"In terror or joy?"
She leaned back with him. "Both, and you? What would that little countryside farm boy think of you?"
"Oh, he would drop dead ." They both laughed at that. "The Princess' royal knight, hero of Hyrule, and I can talk now? He wouldn't believe it."
It was true. Before the Calamity, Link was best known by his fellow knights for being unusually silent. Even the princess had commented on it a few times before she had grown fond of him. " You never even chirp. You can't always let your sword speak for you, you know. Part of being in the royal family is having quick wit, and a sharp tongue."
"Like watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly." Zelda took a seat under the tree, with the ground covered in once near-extinct silent princesses. She patted the dirt next to her, silently asking Link to sit next to her. "You've come a long way, hero. You should be proud, and I think it should be commended. If I could see to it that a ceremony be held, I would. I guess my praise will have to do for now."
Link smiled. "Your praise is more than enough."
"Yeah? Guess I'll have to say it more often."
"We should both be commended. I mean… look at you."
"Look at me." She copied, gesturing to her body.
"Oh, I am." He punctuated it with a cheeky wink.
"Ugh, you are truly awful." She gave him a light biff to his arm. "If only my father could see me now. I look like I could lift a bull, I probably could, and if he heard my profanity now, he'd fucking gasp too." That earned a chuckle from Link, but he watched solemnly as her smile faded, and she looked at something on the distant horizon. "I feel like I've lost half of what makes me a princess."
Lost it? She seemed more like a Princess now than she ever was. Fit to be queen, if Link could have a say in it. "Zelda." The sudden change in tone made her tense. "You are still very much a princess to me. You haven't lost a single bit of your charm or beauty, and if anything, I'd say you've gained a whole lot more."
"You think so?" Her eyes were still focused on the distant hills.
Aiming to shake her from her downcast state, he silently scooted up behind her, and wrapped his arms around her waist, making her squeal in surprise. He pulled her back into his body, and placed little, feather-light kisses along her neck, making her chuckle and sigh. "I do think that, Zel."
"Zel…" she turned and cupped his face in her hand. "Now there's a name I haven't heard in… a long time."
"You'll hear it more. I promise. I remembered how much you liked it." Lifting his head, he saw that the sky had begun to take on a slight pinkish glow. Night was on its way and, as much as he'd like to stay right there, all night, a snug, shared bedroll in their tent was much more enticing. "Sun's setting, love. Wanna get a move on?" He held out a hand for her to take, and pulled her up off the ground.
"Alright, but I choose where we set up camp this time." She began collecting their things and went to pull her used arrows out of the hay bale.
"What? What was so bad about last time?"
That earned him an eye roll. "You may be used to sleeping on sharp rocks, but I'd at least like a nice patch of grass under the tent. With my luck, you'd stick us over a mud puddle."
Link gestured defeated, though he would admit he was used to just picking random spots and setting up camp. Zelda had a much better sense of comfort than he did. Good thing she was royalty. "Alright. Alright, I'll get the horse."
He returned a few minutes later with a blood bay stallion in tow. Zelda took her time tying everything snug onto the saddle before she took his hand, and he lifted her up with him.
She wrapped her hands around his waist, leaning into him. "Let's go, Hero."
"As you wish." With a click and a light boot to its side, the horse reared slightly, and they sped off toward the forest, leaving their cozy little archery spot behind.
