alright i’m jumping on-board. dni if you think astrology is bullshit, if you've never played a legend of zelda game, if you can't see your bedroom floor because it's so messy, if you don't like lemonade, if you like hot weather better than cold weather, if you only shower once a week, if you can sleep with socks on, if you don't eat three meals a day, if you have more than 3 URLs saved, if you listen to the same music regardless of your mood, if you don't have a library card, if you don't have a favorite animal, and if you're an only child.

Every now and again I like to gift an author with an illustration of a fanfic of theirs that I have immensely enjoyed. This illustration is for @zeldaseyebrows fanfiction, "The Mushroom Risotto Incident" on Ao3. This is from Chapter 2, "Stir".
Link and Zelda fall into a sweet, confortable routine together, but Zelda just can't bring herself to confess her love to Link due to guilt from "accidentally" witnessing an embarrassing moment before Ganon was vanquished. The fic is rated E(18+) so please mind content warnings.

I love this sweet moment of adoration and cuddles.

My #1 post of 2022
The Guard Outside the Door
Inspired by the comic below:
Tumblr media
Zelda hummed as she walked out of her chambers, her research notes in hand. Glancing to her left, the Royal Guard stationed at her door stood as he always did since he was assigned his new post approximately two weeks prior. Taciturn and rigid, staring directly ahead with those icy blue eyes.
"Hello," Zelda made another attempt at getting him to at least look at her, but it was to no avail. He remained as he was without even the slightest indication that he had even heard her. She was mildly irritated. Her last guard always gave her a twinkly-eyed smile when she came or went, and it was something she had grown fond of in her comings and goings. This new guard, however, was a stick in the mud and absolutely no fun at all.
"It's polite to at least acknowledge when someone speaks to you," she huffed at him, putting her hands on her hips in disapproval. "You are not required to be rude to be my chamber guard."
Still no reaction.
She felt the scorn rise in her chest, and in an impulsive move, grabbed the guard's beret by the crest badge and yanked it down in front of his face. Crossing her arms to see if he would do anything, she was thwarted yet again. The guard didn't react whatsoever!
"UGH!" The princess rolled her eyes and stomped away in disgust, muttering about speaking to her father about the manners of his Royal Guard.
She missed the pair of azure eyes peek out from under a lopsided beret, following her every move until she was out of sight.
When she came back to her chambers that evening, she was in poor spirits. Much praying, meditating, and study proved fruitless yet again, and each day felt more like failure. As she approached her door, the guard stood--beret straightened--just as stoic as before.
"I don't suppose you'd have a smile for your princess, would you?" Zelda asked, her tone noticeably more demure than earlier that day.
He blinked, but gave no other reaction. Zelda frowned. She grabbed his beret, yanking it down over his eyes again.
"Fine. Be rude!" she snapped, and failed to hide her sob as she walked into her room and slammed the door.
In her haste, she missed a troubled brow and two icy blue eyes glance toward her door and then down at the stone floor.
The next morning, Zelda emerged from her chambers, glanced over at the sober guard, and continued to stare. When he offered no interaction or acknowledgement, she took a step closer. The blue-eyed guard continued to stand unaffected. Fuming inside, Zelda walked right up to the side of his face and stared, her nose and lips mere inches from his ear.
"Why won't you acknowledge me?!" she whispered harshly under her breath. "Am I that repulsive that you eschew conversation?"
The guard swallowed hard. Then blinked. But nothing else. Zelda stomped her foot and growled loudly.
"Uuuughhh! You are positively INTRACTABLE!" She yanked his beret over his face and stormed off.
She missed the guard letting out the long, drawn out breath he was holding as he slumped up against the wall and put his hands over his face.
That evening was the annual ball, and Zelda dreaded it every year. Even at fifteen, she would be made to dance with unfamiliar potential suitors, some twice her age. One particular partner was especially attentive in all the wrong ways, and filled her chest with anxiety as she danced. An unwelcome hand too low on her back, an unmistakable brushing against her bosom, and a far-too-close-for-comfort pair of lips against her ear and neck. After his third dance with her (that she could not refuse), she had had enough. Complaining of a headache, she asked to retire to her room. As she left the Sanctum, she did not see the offending suitor follow her down the corridor. Before she rounded the corner to her bedroom door, a strong pair of hands grabbed her around the waist.
"Leaving so soon, my sweet pet? We've only just started our fun!" his inky dark tone made her shiver with fear. She wrenched herself out of his grasp, her words spitting out a retort.
"I would caution you to take care with your hands and your words, sir," she hissed. "Your advances are not welcome. It was inappropriate for you to follow me here!" She rounded the corner, and saw her dispassionate guard standing by her door. Her pursuer grabbed her by the wrist and yanked her back behind the corner and out of the sight of the guard.
"You will do as I say, and I will act as I will, silly girl," he seethed at her resistance. She shrieked and slapped him in the face, throwing him off balance. It was just enough to get away and she ran back around the corner in a panic, but her guard was nowhere in sight.
"GET BACK HERE YOU LITTLE--" but the voice behind the corner stopped abruptly as she heard a scuffle, a muffled cry, and a sickening thud. Then silence. Zelda backed up toward her door, the tears spilling over as she crumpled to the floor outside her room.
Suddenly, a soft pair of white gloved hands took gentle hold of her arms, lifting her up off the floor to standing. Her breathing came in sobs, and the comforting arms attached to the gloved hands held her close as she leaned her forehead onto a willing shoulder. Despite her anxiety, she felt safe enough to wrap her arms around his torso and squeeze tightly.
"Thank you," she whispered through her tears. "I don't know what would have happened if you weren't--" but the rest of the sentence was interrupted by a soft gloved hand stroking her hair. She melted into his arms and stayed there for what seemed like hours. She sniffed, and pulled back, and she was met with a pair of crystal blue eyes staring into hers with an expression she wasn't able to interpret. The corners of her lips turned up into a smile . Oh, it was a good thing he hadn't looked at her before, because she could fall for those eyes. The head-over-heels kind of fall.
She grinned playfully, grabbed the tip of his beret, and yanked it down over his face.
And this time, she didn't miss him sliding it back in place and giving her a wide, white-toothed smile.

Zelink Week Day 2
beasts | dragons
Masterlist | Zelink Week List | Part 2
words: 1418
summary: A criminally short Zonai!Zelda and prince!Link piece.
BotW - AU
@zelinkweek2021
---------------------------------------------
“Hylian.”
The single word sent his heart rate skyrocketing. He whipped around to the source of the voice, wondering just who was brave enough, or maybe stupid enough, to wander through the woods at such a late hour. Or what, because he always heard stories of why he should never look closer into the call of darkness, yet here he was. He raised the lantern in his hand higher, squinting like it would help, and a hand latched around his wrist just firm enough to make him want to scream.
Link tried pulling his arm free, using every ounce of strength to not drop his only source of light.
“Hylian?” the voice repeated. It came from the owner of the hand, a figure topped with a skull he didn’t recognize. Very little covered the person’s body by Hyrulean standards, and what was left uncovered was decorated with swirling smears of paint. He assumed the person was a woman.
Maybe his flustered and surprised silence was frustrating the stranger, because she squeezed his wrist tighter and nudged her helmet aside to stare at him. Even in the low light, he could tell her eyes were a vibrant and endearing shade of green, marvelously reflective of the foliage encasing them. They were studying him, staring into his soul, looking over all of him, and he couldn’t understand what she seemed to be waiting for.
“What is a Hylian doing here?” she asked. It was heavily accented, but her common tongue was impressive—or maybe he just listened to the gossip in the castle too much. Link cleared his throat and tried to step back, but she followed into his space again.
“I-“ he tried, but what could he say? He was being carted off to marry the Zonai princess and had escaped when his travel party had their backs turned. How could he explain that? She’d never believe him. “I ran away.”
Something in her eyes softened, as did her grip on his hand. She seemed to consider him for a moment, then let go entirely with a frown.
“Bad life,” she said, sounding a little unsure of her words. Link shook his head quickly.
“No-“ he defended, and she cocked her head.
“Why do you run?” she asked. Link furrowed his eyebrows. As if he could be this open with a stranger.
“Are you Zonai?” he questioned curiously, thinking it would be both a long shot and quite the coincidence. To his surprise, or maybe not, she nodded.
“And you are Hylian.”
An astute observation.
“Do you know your princess?” he asked, feeling awkward and stupid and everything inbetween.
An amused smile crossed over her features. She did not give him an answer and instead took his hand, threading her fingers with his.
“Come,” she said simply and he had little time to protest before she was walking, dragging him alongside her.
Link made a noise of refusal before considering his options. He didn’t know where he was, and it was either getting kidnapped by this strange Zonai woman, or married to someone he’s never even seen before. Kidnapped it was, so he stopped trying to break free and just followed along. She led him through the trees, over a babbling creek, deeper into the heart of the forest.
“Do you..have a name?” he asked when he became too unnerved by a towering statue to stay quiet. She looked back at him with a sly smile and Link tried desperately to make sense of why it sent his heart racing.
“Yes,” she replied, but she said no more than that.
“Mine is L--”
But she’d turned on him and pressed her hand over his mouth, her eyes shining with something between a warning and amusement. Had he not been raised in a castle, he might’ve bit her.
“We do not speak our names to the woods,” she said, her laughter evident behind her words.
“Why not?” he asked curiously.
“For the same reason you do not look too closely at the things you think you see.”
She did not speak again and he found himself too afraid to ask any more questions until they reached a civilization carved into the towering walls of lush plateaus. He would be a fool not to acknowledge how lovely it was.
It was here that he learned her name: Zelda, and she learned his. The Zonai were surprisingly kind, accepting him as one of their own, and Zelda turned out to be adventurous and curious and all things inbetween. She had a knack for roping him along with her until he gave in and joined her barefoot in the water, or agreed to face a set of Moblins, or ran hand-in-hand through a lightning storm. His life had gotten far more interesting than it ever had been in the castle, and he no longer worried about the arranged marriage or any of his duties. What he did instead was let himself fall head-first in love with the Zonai girl that had found him and brought him here, where he felt most at home.
He followed her, even to the edge of Lake Hylia in the middle of the night, dodging patrol guards that might’ve been looking for him. When he asked where she was taking him, all she said was that it was a surprise. He was partial to disbelief until he saw it emerging from the water, making its way towards them with a grace that was almost terrifying.
Never before had Link been so close to a dragon. It was far bigger than he could even comprehend, larger than life, and it was right in front of them. He couldn’t help shuffling backwards, but Zelda was just behind him and she didn’t let him get far.
“Farosh,” she greeted, the name sounding far more natural on her Zonai tongue than it ever would on his. “She says hello.”
“Can—you understand her?” Link whispered, afraid if he spoke too loud he would somehow scare the ginormous beast away.
“She would not be here if she was not curious,” she replied quite simply, then nudged him gently with her elbow. “Reach out your hand.”
“What?”
“Like this.”
In demonstration, she held her palm out to the dragon, her fingers steady as if this was no more than a Hylian retriever. He hesitated, but her green eyes were ever patient and understanding, and he trusted her. With a breath, he copied her movement, fighting to keep his hand from shaking.
“She is gentle,” she assured, and Farosh lowered her head. “Touch her.”
“Touch-“
But she placed her hand on top of his and he felt the other just on his shoulder. He looked back at her in utter surprise, but she only smiled in return. What made him look away from her was the feeling of rough scales beneath his hand and a tingling sensation, almost like static, shooting from his fingertips to his toes. The mighty dragon was under their hands, rumblings softly but low enough to vibrate his entire body. Link laughed in giddy disbelief.
“This--I… It’s incredible,” he whispered, utterly amazed.
“She likes you,” Zelda whispered back. He could hear her smile.
“Wow. What does that mean?”
“It means she approves.”
Link turned to look at her with furrowed brows, and Farosh ascended slowly above them to return to the water.
“Approves of what?” he asked.
“You,” she replied, lacing their fingers together and leaning her forehead against his.
“I don’t understand.”
“You ran away from something they decided for you.”
“From--yes, from the marriage that they sent me off for.”
“I am the Zonai princess,” Zelda said quietly and Link took an abrupt step back to stare at her with wide eyes. “It is not forced if you choose it yourself.”
He should’ve been upset that he hadn’t known that before, but he found that he couldn’t be angry with her at all. He’d fallen in love with her regardless of any arrangement, and it was she who gave him that opportunity. How could he be angry at that?
“Do I choose it?” he asked, a smile spreading across his face as he pulled her against him.
“It would be quite the issue if you didn’t,” she replied, brushing her nose against his. “Farosh thinks you should, by the way.”
Link laughed, giving her hands a gentle squeeze as he said, “Then I guess I do.”
And Hyrule’s missing prince kissed the Zonai princess, his soon-to-be bride, under the moonlight on the coast of Lake Hylia.

day 6: abnormality @zelinkweek2021
ao3
AN: inspired by this lovely artwork from @eerna. it's so good that it's seared into my personal canon. (also, day 7 will be egregiously late, so i'll prob post it as its own thing)
* * *
The aftermath of the Spring of Power.
* * *
“What’s wrong with me?”
When she asks it, she doesn’t expect to hear anything, just like always. But still, she can’t help but stare into the stupid statue’s eyes and hope for something to happen. She stares and stares until the water begins to feel almost warm. Until Link appears in the periphery of her vision.
“Princess, your fingers are purple.”
When he helps her out of the spring, she isn’t shivering--she’s cried so hard that she doesn't have energy for anything else. He wraps a cloak around her, his brow the most furrowed she’s ever seen. She barely has the energy to thank him, let alone walk. After she nearly trips for the third time on the way back to their campsite, he stops.
“Can--” he stumbles over his words. Even lifting her head to look at him makes her tired. “Can I carry you?”
“Yes. Please.” She just wants to be somewhere warm. The chill is coming back, and this time it’s deeper than it’s ever been.
He places one arm beneath her legs, and one behind her back.
Perhaps in another life, she would have blushed while her handsome knight carried her, bridal style, to their lodgings for the night. In another life, she would’ve taken this opportunity to loop her arms around his neck and bury her face in his neck.
In this one, as soon as her body doesn’t have to work to move, she passes out.
* * *
She wakes up shortly after he places her down to the sound of the kettle whistling. She couldn’t have been asleep for more than twenty minutes, and she would fall back asleep instantly if her dress weren’t still so cold. Link’s moved her bedroll as close as it can be to the fire. She closes her eyes to soak in the heat on her cheeks.
“I’m making tea,” he says.
“Thank you.”
“You should change.”
“Ok. She closes her eyes for a bit more. It isn’t so bad now that her face is warm. She can almost ignore the fact that the rest of her body feels like the Biron Snowshelf, and if she focuses on the fire and its crackle it sounds so soothing, and—
“Princess,” he says gently. “You should change.”
Zelda rubs her eyes and sits up. “You’re right.”
In the tent, she shivers as she peels off her dress. Link also laid out a towel, and she runs it over her body as quickly as she can considering her hands hurt like hell. She focuses on getting her Rito set as quickly as possible.
When she walks out to sit next to him, he has a mug of tea and a second cloak ready.
“Here.” He drapes it over her shoulders, and hands her the steaming mug. She estimates she’s feeling one tenth of how hot the metal actually is as she wraps her hands around it.
“Thank you.”
Slowly, the unbearable chill defrosts. She takes a sip of the tea.
“Mm,” she says to break the silence. Now that the fog in her brain is also clearing, it’s easy to remember that she cried in front of him for the better part of an hour. She’s too tired to be embarrassed, but still. “This is good. What is it?”
He doesn’t look up from polishing his sword. “Oolong. Decaf.”
“Fancy,” she says.
He nods.
“Did you know,” she says, after a beat, “that oolong is one of the most difficult teas to produce? Some say it’s similar to making fine wine.”
He doesn’t say anything; it seems like there’s a spot of rust or monster gunk that’s particularly to get off. But she’s used to his silence by this point--if anything, now that she’s gotten him to open up, it’s strange when he does respond. It’s easy to keep talking.
“Excluding external factors like the mountain you’re on and that year’s weather conditions, there are millions of small things you can do to vary the flavor. You need to choose a specific variety to grow, how long you want it to oxidize for, and in the case of decaf, you need to expose the moistened tea leaves to pressurized carbon dioxide.”
She looks into the fire. “But, there’s one thing all oolong producers need to do--you need to let it wilt in the sun. Once you pick the plant, this living thing that you’ve cultivated and cherished and killed, you need to find a day with strong sun. You need to let it wilt.”
She doesn’t know exactly where she’s going with this (just that it fills her with rage when she thinks about how her father couldn’t care less if she froze to death today), so she stops.
“Mm,” he says after an inappropriately long amount of time. “Interesting.”
She almost smiles. “You’re lying.”
He looks at her. “What?”
“Nothing.”
They sit in a comfortable silence for a while more. When he puts in the last of the firewood, he speaks first.
“Are you ok?”
“What?”
He looks at her. His brow is furrowed again. “Are you ok?”
The question is so simple, so genuine, that it stabs at her.
“Sorry,” she says, wiping at her cheeks when the tears come. “Sorry, I’ll stop.”
“It’s ok.”
He looks back into the fire again, and waits patiently.
“To be honest,” she says with a sigh once she’s done composing herself. “I don’t think things are going too well.”
“We have time.”
He looks so calm, despite the fact that there’s only one more spring and time is running out. And sure, they have the Champions and the Divine Beasts and the Guardians, but Zelda knows that their odds of survival would increase exponentially with her.
“Yes,” she agrees, “but it isn’t enough. And this isn’t--this can’t be normal.”
“What can’t be?”
“Not hearing anything. Not feeling anything, even when all I do is pray.” She hopes she doesn’t sound too bitter.
He looks back into the fire. “Nothing’s wrong with you.”
Again, for someone who normally says nothing, it’s impressive how his words cut into her like a knife. This time she swallows the lump in her throat. She can’t cry in front of him for a third time.
“Oh,” she says, in her worst impression of casualness, “so you were listening earlier?”
“Sorry.”
She smiles a little to try and put him at ease. It doesn’t look like it’s working, especially since he’s still avoiding eye contact. “You mean to tell me you aren’t listening all the time?”
“Well this one,” he says, then pauses. She wonders if he’s also remembering how broken her voice was (“What’s wrong with me?”). “This one sounded a bit different.”
“It was,” she says, choosing to not say, “I fear I will cause the apocalypse.”
He looks over at her. She doesn’t know if she wants him to tell her if everything will be ok, or if she just wants a hug.
It’s her turn to stumble over her words. “Can--can I put my head on your shoulder?”
He looks surprised, but who is a knight to refuse his princess? (And secretly, she has a feeling he’d go to the ends of the world for her.) “Sure.”
Very gingerly, she places her head on his shoulder. He doesn’t say anything. They watch the fire die down to glowing embers.
* * *
It’s hard for her to fall asleep, even when the fire is out and she’s so toasty it’s easy to forget what she felt like just a few hours ago.
She keeps playing his words over and over in her head. Nothing’s wrong with you.
Link is solid and warm and an anchor. A reminder that underneath the legends and lifetimes and lore, there’s another story here. It involves a boy and a girl, a princess and her knight.
The princess knows that she’s in love with her knight. She knows she might end the world.
“I’m sorry,” Zelda whispers.
Link shakes his head. “Don’t be.”

Zelink Week 2021 Day 2: Blessings
Theme: Beasts
Prompt: Wolves/Dragons
The night was quiet and Zelda was in tears. She couldn’t stand her own incompetence, and the whispers of the castle rang loud in her ears. Zelda had somehow deluded herself into thinking that she’d gotten used to the snide remarks that rose in her wake. She’d been proud of her thicker skin. The illusion of security was shattered this morning, when she was informed by one of the Sheikah guards in the castle that her ladies in waiting had been encouraged to be harsher with her, and had been fed some lines regarding her apparent lack of devotion. She had noticed the comments of course. Finding out it was by the design of those closest to her, not the envy for her status as Princess, had been devastating. She had the maids dismissed immediately, but now she felt guilty for firing them when all they did was follow orders.
Did she deserve it? She didn’t want to believe it, but that was easier to swallow than the prospect of her own father deliberately wearing her down for no legitimate reason. Being strict was one thing, but this was malicious.
Zelda went to bed that night exhausted and shaking from emotional fatigue and perhaps dehydration. At least sleep could theoretically block out this despair for a few hours.
Or she would have, if she wasn’t gently awoken by her appointed knight.
“Link?” she mumbled, taking the robe he offered, “What’s going on? Has something happened?”
He shook his head. “I want to show you something.”
He held his hand out to her, and she took it, savoring the heat of his palm against hers. They left her room with a whisper. Zelda squeezed his arm as they passed by some guards.
“Is it okay to be out like this?” she asked, “Won’t they tell my father?”
Link shook his head, “I’ve talked to them. The Night Watch is obligated to report potential breaches in security. Nothing more.”
She walked a little straighter then, as they ascended to the outer edges of the Sanctum. Walking these paths always sent Zelda into a daydream. She envied the birds that could ride the winds without a care, but Link led her higher still, following behind her as she climbed the ladder leading to the belltower.
Once Zelda reached the top, she rushed to the railing and looked out into the night. Though the castle was her home, it never occurred to her to visit the top of the bell tower. It was euphoric, to gaze out at the land as Hyrule Field stretched out beneath her. For once, the stone gilded in gold didn’t feel quite so suffocating.
Link placed his knight’s cloak on her shoulders, which was odd, considering it was early summer. Zelda opened her mouth to tell him it wasn’t needed, even if the gesture made her heart flutter. Before she could voice her thought the air grew cold.
Zelda watched her breath steam in front of her face in utter disbelief. She shivered despite the cloak, before Link tucked something behind her ear and she felt a sheet of warmth fall over her. She turned to give him a smile, but he shook his head and pointed in front of them. That’s when she saw it.
Cloaked in snow and starlight, a massive serpent crowned with glowing ice descended into the slice of sky right in front of the window. The creature looked her in the eye, and she sucked in a breath so cold it burned her lungs. At the sight of such a great beast, Zelda felt her knees buckle. Link’s arms came around her, and she leaned into his chest as she watched the serpent curl itself in a circle around the tower.
“What is this?” she whispered, hesitant to break the moment and disturb the creature.
“That,” Link whispered, ticking her ear and pulling a blush from her cheeks, “Is Naydra, the patron spirit of wisdom. It circles the castle every night at this hour, but only when you’re in the castle. I asked the Koroks about it, and it’s been happening for a decade.” Zelda felt tears prick her eyes. If what he said was true, Naydra had arrived just after her mother departed.
Link reached around and took her hand in his. “Most people can’t see the dragons to begin with, but the guards notice the chill. I promise the Goddess is watching over you, even if nobody else can see it.”
And for that moment, encased in her beloved knight’s arms and bathed in Naydra’s sacred glow, she believed him.
