I wanted to reply with a cheery song, but I’ve not listened to many. I’m torn between the man below and zemo - but I hadn’t written for you lot in a while, so wanted to give you something quick, easy. as the zemo one would be looooong with a backstory and everything. but, here you go, some Murdock angst. (Equally anyone wants the zemo one, hit me)

As soon as you hear the piano keys being played, you’re pretty sure your heart drops. Even if you try to hide it, taking a sip of your drink, pushing your hip further into the bar—just to feel something, needing to be grounded.

The tune carved into your bones with how often you play it. The song for your heartbreak as you try to smother your pain with wine, beer or spirits.

Because you shouldn’t have kissed him. And you most definitely shouldn’t have taken a cab ride back to his.

You don’t mean to, but you let your eyes cross the room to him. Brushing over him, light, meaningless. Even if it means everything.

Even if you’re held together by mirror-talks and quick motivational speeches.

Because you love him.

You have done for a while. And he’s your friend. He’s best friends with your best friend, and…

Sighing, you bring your drink to your lips. Attempting to focus on the way the edge of the wood is digging into your skin. Leaving a mark, most likely.

Just like he did.

You downed your drink, even if it made you wince. Needing to halt your thoughts, desperately realising you needed to leave as you placed the glass on the counter.

Because if you stayed, if you let your eyes fall to him, you’re sure he’ll read you like a book. Already so open to him, his fingers knowing you as if he’s studied you.

You grab the strap of your bag, turning your back to the room, to the song. Thankful it was warm, that you hadn’t needed to go back to the corner where they all were—where he was. Pushing open the door, letting the city wash over you, allowing you a chance to breathe, to swallow.

That tremor in your throat, the warning side of a lump, of a sob. Your hands wrapping around yourself, nails digging into your arms as you try to push on, trying to move with urgency.

Only to feel him.

His fingers taking your arm, turning you to face him. Your eyes reluctant to meet his, even if he’s already burning his senses into you.

Because that’s what Matt Murdock does.

“Matt…”

“Shh,” he whispers, pulling you close to him.

And you should fight him, even if it feels nice—feels exactly like what you need. Your eyes opening wide, staring over his shoulder at the moving cars and people. None of them realising, none of them noticing that the Devil of Hells Kitchen is in plain clothes.

That he’s holding you together.

“I can’t…” you whisper, trying to wiggle free.

And he whispers your name. A sound that’s like a key to the chains you’ve been wrapping around yourself, determined to keep yourself from letting it all come loose.

The mere sound unlocking a memory of him whispering it in your name, of his hand on your neck, of his hips meeting yours.

You press your palms to his chest, pushing him, blinking tears back. Not wanting to let them fall. Refusing to let them fall.

“Please,” you beg, voice cracking. “I can’t be…”

“Can’t be, what?”

Your bottom lip trembles, shaking your head, knowing he’s seeing it all—in his own fucked up way. Another secret, another deceitful action on his part.

Like the nightly routine. Like the woman he drops everything for.

His hand moves to cup your cheek. “Sweetheart—“

The name pulling you back, wrenching yourself from his touch. A look of disgust so powerful, you’re sure it spoke volumes even to him.

“I can’t be a placeholder, Matt. I deserve… I’m worthy of better than being a backup.” You let it wash over him, providing him a second. “I know, okay. A-and it’s fine. I’m f-fine with not being more than fri-friends…”

Even if you’re not.

The door of the bar opening again, releasing a few seconds of the song into the air.

“…but I need to stop loving you as something more, to do this. To be around you,” you say, running your tongue over your lips. “Otherwise… I’ll lose you, and you’ll lose me. For good.”

He doesn’t say anything.

And you’re not sure if that’s worse.

Your stomach bubbling, almost fluttering with nerves. Even if you should feel relieved, almost free. You’d said it, you’d let the words out.

“Good—“

“I can’t…” he began. “I can’t let you go… I care about you. I… I can’t.”

You almost held your breath. Almost let yourself believe in a fairytale. But, this is Hells Kitchen. There were no magical godmothers or glass slippers. There was no carriages or magical kisses.

Straightening your spine, you painted a smile on. For your sake, more than his. “Try.”

summary : There’s no going back after what happened last night, you finally give in, he finally let his guard down. Everything seems to be perfect for a moment.

You blinked a few times as the sunlight hit your eyes then stretched lazily to the other side of the bed. Oh shit. It’s not empty like it supposed to be. Wait.. it’s not even your room.

Zemo has already woken up for a while now, he leaned his back on the headboard and used the time before you wake up as his advantage to process all the events that happened last night while secretly admitting to himself that he quite enjoys the view of your presence by his side and he could get use to waking up next to you. But when he first woke up, he was upset.

He never thought he would be able to do any sexual activities with anyone else after his wife was dead but last night there was something in him that permitted him to let everything slide.

He never wanted what he had with his wife to fade away and let alone the thought of someone replacing all those special memories. And he intended to keep it that way.

As the time passed by with so many years he stuck in prison alone, you were his first visitor that wasn't there to laugh at him or try to kill him. He appreciated your kindness and then the connection between you two became more of an affection but he will never hold you like he wanted to. But last night he was finally able to make all his fantasies come true. But after all these years that he went from admiring you to loving you and cutting you off, why now? Maybe it’s the alcohol that makes him forget all the overthinking in his head and be loyal to his own feelings, or maybe you and him were just carried away in that moment…

“What time is it?” You finally let your first word out after trying to think straight about what happened last night. Trying to concentrate your mind on the past makes your head feel a little giddy. There was a lot to think of, like was it just a one night stand for him or it means more than that, and above all, how the fuck did you let him beat you in your own game and end up in his bed, but now that most of your conscious is back, you have to get out of this room before someone else wake up and caught you naked in the Baron’s bed.

“What’s the hurry” He didn’t quite know what to say, he wondered if it meant more than just a one night stand to you too but he wasn’t ready to hear the answer yet, so he now just does what he seems to do best lately, getting on your nerves.

“Fuck you” you mumbled back at his useless words and reached for your phone to look at the time.

“I just did” He let out a small chuckle.

His answer makes your face turn red but you choose to ignore him. Okay, it’s still pretty early so no one is possibly up. You stand up from the warm sheets and look for your dress on the floor praying that it’s still in good condition since it is Sharon’s. The floor was a huge mess with your clothes sporadic with his lying all over the place. You quickly pick up your dress and wear it in hurry, not noticing a sad glance from the Baron. Although he hates to let anyone replace his wife, he doesn’t want this to be over. He doesn’t want to feel lonely anymore after he met you.

“Use the fire exit path if there is one, James is already up” Zemo speaks again but louder in the hoarse tone before he clears his throat. He then stands up from the bed and walks right to your direction, picking his favorite coat up from the floor and placing it from behind your shoulder. Oh, it seems like his actions speak louder than his ego after all.

“Great” you roll your eyes before heading towards the door and open it. You didn’t take his warning that seriously because you thought he was only messing with you, well, you might want to consider it again when you saw Bucky sitting on the sofa and looking right at you and you were frozen.

“Did he manipulate you into doing all of these?” Bucky still doesn’t move from his spot but turns his head to look at you.

“Do what?” You tried your best to get out of this situation and go into your room without anyone knowing anything.

“If you wanna play it this way, at least take off his coat before acting so innocent” He was furious but he kept his tone down, not wanting to wake the others. Oh damn it, you totally forget about the coat.

“Fine, he didn’t manipulate me into this, it was my own choice, my drunk-self choice” You admitted. You get it if he was mad, he has every right to, considering everything Zemo put him through, he would never let that bastard near you.

“I know I have no right to change your mind, but I have to say that I see you as my little sister and I’ll be damn worry about you if you’re dating him, but I also believe that you are capable of looking out for yourself, so if he hurt you, just tell me” To your surprise, Bucky gave you a sentimental big brother speech. You hug him tightly and whisper a light ‘thank you so much, you’re the best’ to his ear before making your way to your room and take a hot shower.

You decided to wear a turtleneck shirt to cover all the hickeys from last night. The day went by more or less crazier than you expected, the price for your bounty has been doubled and yet you all have to go out in the open to look for Dr.Nagel.

Luckily, Sharon was there to help when the four of you went into interrogation and find out more about the serum. Zemo has been doing great at his job so far, he doesn’t seem like he would betray you yet but he doesn’t work for you guys either. He has made his own purpose clear that he’s only here to abolish the super soldier serum, and he intends to keep it that way by killing Dr.Nagel. But it wasn’t the only thing he focused on, you can always feel his eyes on you and he’s been acting quite overprotective over you, walking behind you, asking if you were okay. He was the one who carried you out of the debris after the bomb. You were about to sit in the back of his supercharged car but he stopped Bucky from sitting in the front and said ‘lady first’.

The fight was terrible, you got yourself some scars on your body but the Baron was there to help. The first thing he did when he stepped his foot on the plane was look for a first aid kit and take care of your scars. His fingertips ghosting around your face made your heart skip a beat. You would be lying if you say you didn’t notice that his actions towards you have changed after the fight. He has been more loving, more caring and he doesn’t seem to care if Sam and James would notice at all. He took care of your wound, covering you with his blanket when you fell asleep.

The fight scared him. It makes him imagine his life without you and he doesn’t want that. He never wants to lose you and he doesn’t want to waste anymore time. He let his guard down, completely this time.

what i love about bucky and Natasha as individuals is that they’re both morally complex, but extremely skilled assassins/spies. i’ve loved assassin/spy/mercenary stories and characters all my life. bucky and Natasha represent two of my favourite types of assassin archetypes, the Born Into It type and the Never Fully Came Back From Being Forced Into It type.

I love the interiority they both have as assassins whose lives have depended on their ability and willingness to kill and betray and manipulate on behalf of others, and how this gives them a VERY different morality than other more “superhero” like characters when they gain autonomy as individuals.

The only thing consistent about Nat in the MCU and even throughout the comics is this awareness and respect for that she can’t be an Avenger in the way someone like Iron Man or Hawkeye is. She is too cognizant of how naive it is to imagine any single action, team, or person can be good. she has a skillset that she is the best judge of who needs that skillset. sometimes it’s herself, sometimes the avengers, sometimes dark shadowy agencies-- but the autonomy Bucky and Natasha insist on because of the trauma of their autonomy being taken from them is what I love about them as individuals. they don’t dogmatically adhere to the moral codes or expectations of anyone but themselves and lend their skills to those whose visions align with that.

We’re only just now seeing hints of that with MCU!Bucky. He broke Zemo, his own abuser, out of prison because he knows it's more important to find the serum and stop it from being misused (as it was on Bucky himself) than it is to abide by laws of the state or the moral codes of those around him. even if it hurts himself, sam, the Wakandans. because he knows he has the skills do it and it needs to be done. As individuals, Bucky and Nat’s moral code is directly tied to preventing what happened to them from happening again, not to some lofty idea of good or bad. In this way, they feel a lot more grounded and relatable as characters to me.

For me, that’s also partly why they’re so compelling as a couple. They know, understand, and respect one another in a way that no one else in their lives can because their traumas are entwined (i.e. Bucky as the Winter Soldier being Nat's trainer in the Red Room). it's why that line that Bucky says to Nat in the comics - about not being a good man, but she's the only one who understands that - hits so hard. Because it's true. For both of them. When they're together it's the closest they come to feeling seen and healing because they can see each other's trauma clearer than anyone else and know what the other needs in a way no one else can.

As a reader, I can't tell you how much I love their romance! I love it so much because for so long I'd never seen these characters' backstories/inner lives explored so intimately. So often we're on the outside looking in when it comes to Bucky and Nat (we still very much are in the MCU), but when they're together because they have this intimate understanding of each other, we're treated to these amazing character insights u don't get anywhere else. We don't even get that level of insight from Steve or Clint (their best friends).

Until i encountered buckynat, even though I found the characters entertaining individually, i never really Got Them until I read The Winter Soldier comics and saw how they brought out each other's characters. Then, I loved them. And I suppose I am kinda a sucker for little tragedy of it too. They're both too independent to ever really be A Couple and know in their line of work it's too dangerous, but they're there for each other when they can be. i think that's kinda lovely. almost ideal, all things considered.

As a writer, I also think they're kinda the perfect example of how romance is a great way to allow characters to get to know one another and for the audience to know them. They're a testament to how the act of a character getting to know another can also be getting to know themselves. For both better and worse. It's truly a tragedy we'll never really get this with either in the MCU.
