So. Xedgin marriage of convenience canon divergence AU?

Like, raising a kid by yourself after your wife is killed is hard. You have no money and your new BFF is trying to convince you to start stealing to make ends meet which is, you know, the thing that got your wife killed.

Hard pass.

He remembers that paladins are good source of income if you marry one and the orders are always looking for willing spouses for their knights, providing for the family even if the paladin gets killed and even providing scholarships and education for children if necessary. Which is exactly what Edgin and Kira needs.

He presents himself as a candidate and writes a letter of intent to his potential future husband (and yes, he only wants a husband, he cannot imagine himself being married to a woman again, he was, once, Zia was once in a lifetime, he feels like a new wife would be a betrayal— he makes sure to point out no halflings tho, he trust Holga but better safe than sorry!). He feels he’s a good catch, he’s good looking, thanks to having been a Harper he has multiple useful skills that a paladin would appreciate like taking care of weapons and armour, horses, he’s also a decent cook and he can knit? All he needs is someone who’d provide for his family; himself, his daughter and newfound sister.

He quickly gets a reply from a potential candidate, who is absolutely taken by his story, having also lost a family to red wizards of Thay as he himself is a Thayan.

Even harder pass. No Thayans are going to be sharing Ed’s house and bed, and he won’t let one near his daughter.

But tendays pass and no other replies come and he’s starting to get desperate. He finally writes the reply to the “Xenk” agreeing to engagement (he asked around, everyone, including Holga, knows stories of the guy and they are all positive, and if there’s a part of him that is like “maybe you deserve to be married to a Thayan after your previous spouse got killed by one and it’s all your fault?” he’s not gonna argue with the self-loathing voice in his head).

A letter comes asking him to meet at the temple of whatever god Xenk is a paladin of in a couple of days so they can get married.

Edgin doesn’t want Kira to come with him but Holga insists, it’s probably a good idea to get his daughter used to the fact that there’s gonna be a new person living in the house with them from time to time?

And so on a nice afternoon they all go the temple where Edgin meets his fiancé for the first time ever, and literally 10 minutes later is married to him.

There are good times (turns out that Xenk is really really really - and I cannot stress this enough - REALLY good at sex) bad times (Edgin freaks out when he hears Xenk speaking Thayan to Kira) and average times.

Some time down the line Ed eventually falls in love with Xenk, because that’s how these stories go. Oh and they also go on an adventure and thwart an evil plot to undeadify the entire city of Neverwinter because destiny likes to make sure things that are meant to happen, happen.

I think one of my favorite things about honor among thieves is how Zia’s death and also continued presence in edgin’s life is handled. She never feels “fridged” so to speak. Dead wife is a pretty standard dnd backstory so I never felt like she had been killed off in service to his development because I guess as a dnd player I was like oh yeah dead family, classic character motivation. And then they handled it so well - the dragonfly was a beautiful way of marking the impact she made on him as well as reminding us and edgin of what his goal was. Bringing that symbol back when he finally made the choice to let go, coupled with what he said, that he was bringing back his wife, not Kira’s mom, super poignant to me.

It was just very nice to see your typical “my wife died and now I’m an adventurer” storyline played out so well and brought to a really sweet and satisfying conclusion. I can’t believe this movie made me feel 900 emotions in 2 hours.

In Darling's defense, Italian-American Italian and actual European Italian is so different in terms of pronunciation lmao. Like you go to Italy and ask for a cannoli, they're giving you multiples because in Italian, cannoli is the pural for the dessert. Cannolo is the singular, but in Italian-American Italian it's different: cannoli is singular and cannolis is plural.

As a member of the Pizza Pasta Force I can tell you that the episode of The Sopranos where the gang goes to Italy and Paulie cannot speak or understand any more than like 20% of any conversation in Italian is pretty spot on. My Zia studied Italian at college in Italy so she was fine, but my dad gave up and just started speaking Spanish in an Italian accent and it somehow fucking worked better than him trying to actually speak Italian to locals

So Roman would probably give up and decide the best way to learn is the way most people in his community learn--surrounding yourself with the neighborhood nonnas all the time. They'll teach you to cook and you'll get free lessons because they refuse to speak English unless they have to like with the cops or something...though to be fair, they only use three words with them and then refuse to say anything else: "No warrant? So I went back and reread Into The Light after finishing With Tenderness (which was amazing btw) and now I am having Thoughts (which I do NOT have the time to write shut UP brain 🤣🤣)

Specifically I was thinking about if the mage had also made it so that Sasha couldn't write about what was happening either and how angsty that would be but he would probably still befriend the kittens in secret because he has the world's biggest heart

and then I went off on a long tangent of 'here's how Sasha can still win' because I do not control where the ideas go and your sandbox is very fun to play in 💖

Anyways please enjoy the mental image of Sasha (and/or Aren) very laboriously dictating words in secret to whichever of the Mantikittens is least injured and most mobile at any given time - after all, HE can't write about it and he can't talk about it to anyone who doesn't know already, but, uh, I think the kittens might just have noticed something 🤣🤣
