TAMATO says : “ Flash Back Friday to the year 1989 Part 1 … Being that it’s Puerto Escondido season, I figured it a good time to share a historical moment in my particular life. I had just turned 14 years of age & my dad had planned to take me on my first major surf trip out of the Hawaiian Islands. Destination; Oaxaca, Mexico to a wave known as The Mexican Pipeline. I had been hanging with good friend @jackjohnson & a bunch of Northshore friends who were already pretty confident surfers in the solid conditions of the big waves of country. I was the East Side kid & kind of the wussy & kook friend of the group who was playing some serious catch up to these hammers that were basically born & raised with Pipe Line as their back yard. They were confident in heavy surf & at the time, I was not. Summer of 89’ & Puerto was my inauguration into my life’s addiction of charging powerful, hollow waves. This place lived up to it’s reputation of being nicknamed the Mexican Pipe. It was a sandbar, & though obviously powerful, in my head, it was still a sandbar, not a shallow reef like Pipe Line. I had tricked my mind into believing that this made it safe & user friendly; which realistically, was not true at all. However, it worked to my advantage. The other thing that help build major confidence in me, was that both of the boards I brought had a leash plug malfunction & I was unable to use a leash the entire trip. I had no choice but to swim & navigate the brutal impact zone & currents of Zicatela Beach the entire trip. Little did I know or realize at the time through foresight, that this trip to The Mexican Pipeline at 14 years of age would prepare me to forging my very own path to surfing the real Pipe Line, both physically & more importantly mentally. Here’s a nostalgic photo of me charging Mexico at 14 right before the leash plug broke. This is the trip that paved the way for my addiction to a life enveloped by Pipe Line.
