MXTX Food Zine: Round Three!
Greetings, MXTX fans! It’s December again, which means that the interest check for the third round of the MXTX Food Zine is now live! Please fill it out by December 27 if you intend to join, so we can get an idea of how many people will be participating this year.
Some specs for newcomers: This zine will be free, SFW, and 100% digital, with one dish/recipe per entry. After creator sign-ups, creators can reserve their chosen recipes on a first-come first-serve basis.
For more information, check out the FAQ below. You can read the previous releases here: 2022 | 2023
1. What’s a food zine?
Entries to the zine will consist of recipes paired with one or more pieces of fanwork: for example, you can contribute a recipe and accompanying fic or fanart that involves the recipe or dish in some way. Artists can contribute illustrated recipe cards instead of traditional fanart.
Contributors can also collaborate to create a single entry.
Please note that dishes featured in the 2022/2023 editions cannot appear again in the 2024 release.
2. Who can join? What’s the application process?
There is no application process! This is not a charity zine, so it will be 100% digital and free for downloading after it’s completed. Anyone in the MXTX fandoms is welcome to sign up.
3. What kind of recipes are allowed?
Any and all recipes are allowed. They don’t need to be traditional Chinese recipes or recipes related to the dishes mentioned in MXTX’s novels.
4. When will the zine be released?
The release date is tentatively set for October 31, 2024.
5. What are the rules about content?
The only hard and fast rule is that entries must be SFW and fall safely within a T rating according to AO3 standards. Other than that, it’s up to you: you can include your favorite rarepairs, draw crossover art, write all kinds of AUs, etc.
6. When do sign-ups open?
Sign-ups will open on December 28 and remain open until January 4, which is when recipe sign-ups will open for creators.
7. Do I have to fill out the interest check to join the zine?
No, but please fill it out anyway if you can! :)

Hello!
This is an introduction post explaining this project and hopefully garnering some attention!
🥚 What's this about?
This is a fanzine by Shane fans, for Shane fans. It's a fan project to appreciate this character, his story, and his growth, and how much it means to a lot of us who have been through similar things.
🥚 How will this work?
Like most other zines! The project will begin on a certain date, and artists and writers will have several months to complete a piece of their choosing for the fanzine. We will use discord to communicate, schedule, and smooth out any issues.
🥚 When is the projected release?
I think aiming for spring 2024 would be nice! It'd be nice to release the zine around when Shane's birthday would be.
🥚Will this be a paid zine?
This is a charity zine to raise money for the mental health charity Samaritans! Samaritans is a charity that operates free and confidential phone lines for people to reach out and talk to someone whenever they're having a difficult time. They provide a listening service for those who may be suffering from suicidal thoughts or otherwise unpleasant feelings. Donations will be raised via ko-fi during a certain fundraising period and after that's over, the zine will go free to download.
🥚What format is this zine in?
The zine will be formatted to A4 paper size, HOWEVER this zine will only run digitally and will not have a print release as things stand. (Mod honestly can't afford a print release as cool as that would be...)
🥚Who can join?
Almost anyone can join! There is no requirement on skill, online following, previous zine experience etc. If this is your first zine, that's awesome! We welcome you with open arms. This is a zine for anyone who has ever struggled with their mental health, and has felt comforted by a certain stardew valley character. I do require that contributors be at least 13+. Not only would it be against discord terms of service to have under 13s on the platform, but mod here, as a fully grown adult, would also be uncomfortable with it - sorry!
🥚Are there any other rules right now?
There are a few! Let's list them, and please read carefully.
We have a zero-tolerance policy for racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia, and anything else that falls into similar categories. ZERO. This is non-negotiable. This is a safe space and anyone displaying any of the above will be kicked off the project.
That said, proship, comship, darkship etc are not welcome on this zine. This is a safe space for everyone, including minors, survivors, and everyone else.
This is a SFW zine. There will be no NSFW art or writing included.
Every artist and writer is free to depict Shane as they like. If they choose to depict him as trans, POC, mlm, or anything else for the sake of representation, that is their choice and you must respect it. See the first bullet point about zero tolerance.
Ableism also extends to bigotry toward those suffering with mental illness, and addicts. We are trying to promote empathy and acceptance. Ableist comments will be warned (e.g. complaining about Shane's room being messy).
Your piece must include Shane as the focal point! That should be clear already, but just in case! So long as he's the focal point, you can draw or write anything! Ships are allowed.
🥚How do I get involved?
For now, I have an interest check form that I plan to run until the end of September! After that, contributor sign ups will open. Remember to follow this blog to see updates on the zine! You can also send questions to my inbox and I will do my best to answer them. For now, here is the interest check:

You can see their pages in the full zine too, so please check them out!
I also want to include all our digital artist and colorist in this! So for that, I have included the transparent images for my two pages here!

I was natural about ACOC before but this whole thing got me wanting to care about it and its fans so much more. Are there zines/future projects that we can throw some money to?
yes! there's one zine I know of right now that's currently open & raising money for charity; I will also link some upcoming projects/free zines for you to take a look at. there's some pretty cool non-zine fanprojects too that are free to check out.
@decaloguezine is complete and PWYW with proceeds going to International Rescue Committee until May 19th. After that it will be free, but there is a special extra for 10+ donations that won't be available after the 19th.
Tumblr media
@d20zinejam Zine jam will be running again this summer. last year, it was a zine bundle that raised $2643.44 for Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (WRRAP). 33 zines in total were created and many of them are now individually PWYW/free to download, so please check them out!
Tumblr media
@apodcastofcandy is a 10 episode mini-series podcast that talked about everything ACOC from its characters, settings, and villains to its fanworks and social impact. I guest starred in one of the episodes :)
Tumblr media
@acocfictionzine is currently in the middle of being organized. it will be a free fanzine, and I encourage anyone looking to dip their toes into writing for a zine to take a look.
and finally @saccharinazine is a free saccharina rocks centric ACOC zine that is free & recently organized by my friend!

Calling all fans of Kotetsu!! I recently participated in a FREE Kotetsu-themed calendar zine and wrote a short (ish) piece for the theme of acrobat. The artist I was partnered with is the fantastic @lunari-sketches!
The zine is officially out on twitter and can be downloaded if you go to the linked post below. There's the calendar and the zine version with fics to go with each theme. The dates for the calendar are meant to be filled in yourself (so you can use it any year or reuse it). https://twitter.com/KotetsuCalendar/status/1620727276383133696
Please check it out and give all the artists and authors who participated some love! <3

Official Damirae Zine Announcement!
Welcome to the DamiRae Zine 2022!
Greetings fellow shippers! With the enormous success of last year’s zine and all the beautiful works that came out of it, we’ve decided round 2 is definitely in order.
For those of you newer to the fandom who may be wondering what this is all about, a fanzine (fan magazine or zine) is a non-professional and unofficial publication, produced by enthusiasts and fans of a particular popular cultural interest, for the pleasure of others who share your interest. In other words, a Zine is an unofficial project, unaffiliated to DC Comics, made for our nice little fandom. Fanart and fanfics galore!
In celebration of our second year, the first Zine is now available for free download. HERE
The title for this year’s zine is "Ordinary Worlds," and the theme is cinematic and literary AU’s. Give your favorite book or movie a Demonbird makeover! If you’d like to participate, please message us here on Tumblr or in the DamiRae discord with an explicit ‘yes’ that you’ll be contributing. We’re looking for about 25 creators in total, but may expand this if the interest is great enough and if we organizers can find the bandwidth.
Not a content creator but still want to participate? Consider being a beta! We could definitely use the help!
Rules of Engagement:
Rated T or lower (may contain violence, suggestive themes, strong language, cannot contain anything explicit, triggering, NSFW or +18)
Collaborations between artists and authors are encouraged, so feel free to DM anyone you’re interested in working with
Content must be zine exclusive for at least 1 year
After that creators may post their works and a free version of the zine will become available upon request
The zine discord is for participants only (artists/writers/betas)
Story Requirements:
Must submit a sample of your writing in order to be considered, although it does not have to be a new story. Betas and proofreaders will be available to help with translated works and anyone who just needs help with the technicals.
1k minimum word count for stories. Writers who require assistance with beta/editing will have a 3-5k word limit (~10 pages). Those who don’t have a 10k limit. This will be decided by the staff based on the writing sample you submit.
Maximum 2 stories per writer
Art Requirements:
Maximum 8 pages (= 4 full spreads)
A4 format, 300dpi // 3508 X 2480 pixels OR 297 X 210 mm — whichever measure is more comfortable
Nothing over 600 dpi, and final files preferably PNG, if not, JPEG
Color mode RGB, as it is friendlier for digital viewing
Timeline:
December 20th: Signups officially close and art/story ideas are due. The participant list and table of contents will be announced shortly after on Tumblr.
Signups may close earlier if we exceed how many creators we think we can successfully work with
March 1st: Deadline for sending ALL FINAL works.
April 1st: Estimated launch date for the zine. This may be sooner or later depending on how long it takes to put everything together. At that time you can purchase a digital copy for $10 with all the proceeds (minus processing fees) donated to charity.
> We will be doing progress checks on the 15th of January and February. We have limited time and staff, so commitment and responsibility from the participants is crucial to have quality work!
> The submitted work MUST be original and not previously posted to any social media and must NOT be posted anywhere until after the official release of our Zine, with an exception for small previews (ask staff for further instruction).

We’re releasing a Clark/Lex-centric fanzine to celebrate Smallville’s 20th anniversary! Answers to Frequently Asked Questions are below the cut.
Will the zine be physical or digital? After launch day, the zine will be available both as a digital PDF and as a printed book.
Will the zine be for profit? No. The digital PDF will be free to download. The printed books will be priced at the cost of production with no markup. No one involved in the creation of this zine will profit from characters owned by Warner Bros.
How many contributors? We are hoping to have 25-30 contributors, with the majority of those contributors being fan fiction writers.
How much will a physical copy of the zine cost? The exact price of the zine depends on the final page count, which won’t be determined until all contributors have made their final submissions. We anticipate the price being approximately 30 USD.
Will the zine include NSFW content? The zine will not include explicit sexual content. To avoid legal complications, we cannot mail ‘obscenity’.
What rating of content is accepted? We’re going with Ao3’s ratings and keeping works in the zine no higher than a Mature rating. Content with a General and/or Teen rating is acceptable. Content with a Not Rated and/or Explicit rating is not acceptable.
Is there an age limit to contributors? All contributors must be 18+. Anyone under the age of 18 will be rejected.
Can other ships or characters be featured in the zine? Mentioning other characters is acceptable, but the focus should be on Clark and Lex’s relationship.
Will contributors be compensated? No, unfortunately. No one involved in the creation of this zine will profit from characters owned by Warner Bros.
When will we know if we’ve been accepted? We estimate roughly a week after applications close for all contributors to be contacted. However, please check social media for frequent updates and information.
How long do contributors have to confirm their acceptance? Once you have received your acceptance correspondence, you have a week to confirm your acceptance by following the instructions in the email. Be sure to check your spam folders regularly just in case. If you do not confirm in time, your spot may be given away!
Are AUs allowed? AUs are allowed so long as the Smallville universe is the basis. Contributors may take inspiration from other Superman media (comics, cartoons, movies, etc), but the content should still be accessible to people who have only seen the Smallville TV show. If you have questions about a potential AU, contact us.
What word count should writers aim for? Our goal is to have 25 writers contributing stories that are approximately 3,000 words each. This number may change depending on how many contributor applications we receive. After applications close and acceptances are sent out, writers will receive a more specific word count goal.
Are there any other submission guidelines? All submissions must be new content. We will not accept fics and/or art that have been published previously.
As a contributor, how can we submit our work? Check out your acceptance email for instructions and more information. You will be provided with detailed specs, but as always, the team is always here to support you if you have any questions at all. Please don’t be shy!
If you have any further questions, please contact us!

If you have a fanbook/comic for sale or a fanzine up for pre-order, please PM me to let me know or email me at ineffableplanner (at) gmail.com. I may catch it on my own but better safe than sorry ;) - same goes for any events or zine signups you’d like boosted in the Saturday newsletter. Also a shout-out to those of you who ping me with links, both for events as well as comics and zines.
For now no commission info as opening/closing commissions happen so fast sometimes the links might not be valid after a few days. As for patreon pages I can’t double check content, so no.

No. 6 Zine 2018 donation results
The 2018 No. 6 Zine raised a total of 694.97$ for ActionAid USA, a charity which was voted for by our followers. ActionAid is an international human rights organisation, which recently took legal action against Shell for its impact on climate change, organised a women’s rights rally in New York, and provided disaster relief for communities recovering from Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi (source: ActionAid’s email newsletter). To see our donation receipts as well as a breakdown of our income and expenses, please look below the cut.
In addition to the 694$ that sales of the zine and its merchandise raised, No. 6 fans donated 87$ through the donation link on our downloads page, which is still active and will remain active for as long as the 2018 No. 6 Zine is available for download. Want to help people, support the zine, and make our fandom look good? Feel free to donate through that link at any time! We won’t be showing receipts for fan donations in order to respect the privacy of the people who donated. However, if you’re interested in checking any of our numbers, you’re welcome to contact ActionAid yourself to ask them about our donations. If you have any other inquiries related to our accounts, please email us using the contact info on our faq page - we do strive to be transparent.
Thank you so much to everyone who supported the 2018 No. 6 Zine (Reunion Will Come) through purchases, donations, reblogs, and kind words. The zine committee and ActionAid are very grateful for everyone who helped make the 2018 No. 6 Zine a reality.
We donated the money in two batches, so here are the receipts for each of our donations.
Receipt for our first donation:
Tumblr media
Receipt of our second donation (which was accidentally sent to the wrong email):
Tumblr media
And for those curious, here is a copy of our books, to show you how much we raised vs how much we spent:
Tumblr media
Income: The majority of our income came from Etsy. We didn’t make that much money through Redbubble, but the store exists for the benefit of No. 6 fans, so the committee has decided to keep it open for now. The “refunds” we received were one lump sum from Print Center USA, to compensate us for the zines that were misprinted (some of the pages were upside down). We used part of the refund to in turn compensate our customers who received the misprinted zines. The reason Print Center USA gave us 485$ and we only gave out 66$ in refunds is because many of our customers who received the misprinted zines were extremely generous and requested a partial refund or no refund at all so that we could donate the remainder of the refund money to charity. All of the refund money which was not used to refund customers was donated to charity, as per their requests.
Expenses: Roughly 50% of our Etsy sales went towards the production cost of the print copies of the zine, while 10% of our Etsy sales were paid back to Etsy in fees. Our second biggest expense after the printed zines was shipping costs. Aside from purchasing shipping materials such as cardboard and plastic envelopes, we also had to pay to ship items such as our giveaway prizes and the buttons which were produced for us, and to send some of the misprinted zines back to the zine company. Plus, we had an unfortunate error with Etsy’s shipping cost calculator early in production wherein some of our international customers were charged 3$ for shipping when they should have been charged 15$. We paid most of their shipping costs since the discrepancy was not their fault. The shipping cost calculator has since been fixed, but this error cost us around 144$.
Fund reserve: Lastly, you’ll see that we set aside a “fund reserve” of 50$ towards the 2019 zine. Our fiasco with the shipping cost calculator showed us that it’s good to have emergency funds on hand in case something unexpected happens. So, we’re keeping that money to help us produce the 2019 No. 6 Zine, just in case. If it turns out we don’t end up needing it, we will of course donate it to ActionAid (or our 2019 charity).

About
What is this zine about?
This zine is going to focus solely on the LOTR trilogy (not the Hobbit or the Silmarillion). One of our favorite things about the series is the theme of light versus dark, good versus evil, hardship versus peace- hence the title, Twilight and Shadow! Our thoughts were to connect this theme to the fan genres of angst and fluff. Ideally, this zine would be 50% fluff, and 50% angst.
What is the rating of this zine? Are ships allowed? AUs?
This zine will be allowing canon-compliant violence. Think of it as being rated PG-13 if the MPAA was competent (you can say fuck, but only ONCE). But really, we’re okay with fights, blood, smooches, et cetera, as long as it isn’t too raunchy/explicit. We want this zine to be safe for minors, so no nsfw or gore (again, smooches and sword fights are okay).
On the topic of smooches, let’s talk about ships! We love them. We would love to see whatever rarepair or canon ship you want to create content for. Aragorn/Arwen, Aragorn/Legolas, Legolas/Gimli, whatever floats your boat. Romance isn’t your thing? Thats cool, too! And I can’t believe I have to type this with my own two hands, my own ten fingers, but it should go without saying that any incestuous ships are not allowed.
Let’s move onto AUs! We want this project to accommodate any ideas creators have, so they’re all allowed! However, we also want to see some canon-verse ideas in the final product. If our ideal zine is half angst, half fluff, we would also want it to be half au, half canon.
Who is running this project?
Mod Grummpi and Mod Cobalt. We have participated in many zines in the past, and thought we would try our hands at hosting one. This is our first project. That might be scary, which is exactly why we have chosen a free pdf format for this zine.
How will communication work?
If you have any concerns, questions, or tips for us please send us an ask or email about it.
For the duration of the zine, we will be relying on discord to keep contributors updated and in the loop, plus it’s a good place to talk all things Lord of the Rings. If you plan on applying, please be prepared to use discord.
Who can contribute to this zine? How many people are you accepting?
We will be accepting both artists and writers. You will need to apply to get into this project, and we will be releasing application guidelines and the application itself when the interest check closes. They will be open for one month.
We will be allowing collaborations, so after emails are sent out you will have an opportunity to reach out to a writer/artist.
We will also be accepting comic artists!
Is this for profit? Where can I get it when it’s finished?
Nope! It’s a free PDF zine. You can download it off of google docs or mediafire when it is finished.
What is the schedule?
You can see the schedule here.
Can I apply? I’m nervous about applying.
Of course you can apply! If you’re nervous, please remember that this is just a fun fan project! This isn’t a job or college application, so we don’t want people stressing over this. We created this project because we love LOTR, and want to engage with the fandom that literally founded our friendship back when we were in the 9th grade (we are so, so old).
What are the specs for this zine?
We want all art to be 1900x2700px at 300 resolution, PNG.
Comic artists will have 1-2 pages. If you do one page, it will have to be fully colored, but if you do two grayscale is okay (we would prefer color).
Word count for writers will be 1,000 - 2,500
If you have any questions, please send us an ask or email us at [email protected]!

Hello, and thank you for your interest in the My Love, My Life BNHA Soulmates Fanzine! We’re so grateful for how excited everyone is, and how many questions everyone is asking. Asking questions means you want to hear from us, so we’re honored!
That being said, the amount of asks we’re getting is beginning to be overwhelming, and we’ve been getting a lot of repeat asks. Starting from here on out, we’ll only be answering asks that haven’t been answered in this post, any of our official posts, or that have been asked before. We hope you understand our desire to keep our blog clean and organized, as well as our need to focus on bringing the zine to life! If you’re new to our blog, please read through our previous posts and asks and, if you still have any questions after that, feel free to ask!
With that business out of the way, click Read More for our FAQ! (Note: any example ships/characters used in the following FAQ are chosen randomly, and do not indicate any particular preferences of the MLML Mod Team)
General Zine Specs
My Love, My Life will be a for-profit, perfect-bound A5 zine, and roughly 130 pages in length. We’re looking to have 11 writers, 5-6 betas, 33 artists, and 4 merch artists, guests included!
General Zine FAQ
What is a Zine?
A Fanzine is a booklet of fan-made content revolving around a certain fandom, ship, theme, or even all three! “Fanzine” is a word that derives from “Magazine” and is usually sold either for profit or for charity. Zines are usually sold with a variety of bundle options, with each bundle coming with different amounts of merchandise including, but not limited to, prints, charms, and stickers.
What’s the schedule for My Love, My Life?
You can find the schedule [Here]!
How will we be communicating with everyone?
The majority of our communication will be done through our Discord server, due to the organization opportunities Discord offers and the ability to have everyone in one place to minimize the risk of missing someone when announcing important information. If you do not have a Discord and would like to apply for the zine, we highly encourage you to make an account. Signing up is free and very quick, and Discord offers an app download for both mobile and PC. If you don’t want to download, or do not have space to download, you can also use Discord directly through your internet browser.
Even if you don’t plan to apply for this zine, but plan to apply for other zines in the future, we would encourage you to make an account. Due to its convenience, many zine projects have begun doing the majority of their communications via Discord, as well as many fandom events in general.
You can click [Here] to visit Discord’s website and make a free account!
What ships are allowed?
All ships are allowed in the zine except Adult x current minor. This includes the bonus NSFW mini-zine, should it generate enough interest in our accepted contributors to proceed with putting it together. We welcome rare pairs, poly ships, and ships beyond the most common! In order to promote ship variety, we will be limiting content to 4 pieces (artwork and/or fics) per ship, and requesting all applicants to record their top 5 favorite ships so that we can get everyone creating something for a ship they enjoy/feel comfortable with.
Are platonic soulmates allowed?
Yes! We’re will be sticking to the no adult x canon minor rule though, in order to be consistent and simplify things. If you’d like to apply to do any platonic soulmates, list the characters involved in your application and use the provided buttons to indicate if the ship is platonic or romantic. Example: Todoroki & Ojiro ◾ Platonic (selected)  ◽ Romantic (not selected)
What kind of Soulmate AUs are we looking for?
Any AU, sky’s the limit! Whether you have a common AU you adore, or your own unique twist, as long as you feel comfortable portraying it in your selected medium, you’re welcome to include it in the zine!
Collaboration
With our writer and artist applications offset by a week, writers will be joining our team and Discord server a week earlier than artists. Writers selected for collaboration will be able to utilize that time-frame to brainstorm and get a general outline together before artists join. After artists have been selected and join the server, any selected for collaboration work will be able to claim a story to work on based on outlines provided by collab writers.
Collaboration will involve an artist working with an author to create either a series of smaller artworks or a single, one-page piece to supplement the fic being written. Every individual involved in collab work must apply and be accepted independently.
Rare Pair vs Crack Ship (Our Definition)
Rare Pairs are ships (polys included) that are uncommon ships that haven’t really been considered much, if at all. Example: Shinsou and Hatsume
Crack ships are ships intended to be for comedic purposes rather than any actual interest in the potential dynamics between two or more characters, or a ship that has no basis existing in canon. Example: Kaminari and Shrek
How long will fics be in the zine?
We’re expecting a range of 2k-4k words from our accepted authors!
Is traditional art accepted?
Yes! We just ask that, if accepted, you have a way to scan your work in at least 300dpi and have access to an art program for any retouches that might be necessary (coloration errors, scratch in the scanner glass, etc).
For the NSFW Mini-zine, are we allowing ships of current students?
Yes, but all characters depicted in the mini-zine will be aged up to at least 18 years old! We continue to request no Teacher x Student relationships.
Application FAQ
Are we allowed to submit NSFW sample pieces?
Yep! We just prefer that you have at least one SFW piece, and that you indicate which samples are NSFW in the “Content Warnings” section of the application (along with any other applicable warnings), as one of our mods is underage!
How long should our samples be for the Writer’s Application?
In order to make application evaluations more expedient, we’re asking that each submitted writing sample be no shorter than 1k words and no longer than 3k words.
How do we get considered for collab work?
There is a question in the Writer and Artist applications asking if you want to be considered for collab work. You can also opt out if you’d rather not!
Can we apply for more than one position?
Yes! However, we will only be accepting you into one role in order to prevent overworking as well as to maximize the amount of people we can accept!
If we are under 18, but close to our 18th birthday, can we volunteer for the NSFW zine?
If you are underage and accepted to MLML, and would like to work on the NSFW zine, you need to have your 18th birthday on or before November 8, 2018 (a week before the first check in), and cannot begin work on any NSFW piece until your birthday. Lying about your age or birthday in order to gain access to the NSFW zine or NSFW channels will result in removal from the zine and server.

hi! i was wondering, do u perhaps have any tips on what to pay attention to when applying for a zine instead of making one?
I actually planned to cover that a bit during a later post in the series where I also wanted to talk a bit about zine etiquette for contributors, but I definitely can give you some pointers already (also I love to procrastinate, soooooo this ask is more than welcome haha)
THIS GOT REALLY OUT OF HAND SO THERE’S A READ MORE NOW ^^;
First of all, find a zine for something that you actually feel passionate enough about so that you want to create for it. You don’t want to create something for something you actually hate. Zines are supposed to be fandom fun with this feeling of professionalism, not something you absolutely need to drag yourself to work on.
I also wouldn’t apply to too many at once, especially with similar/overlapping schedules. 2-3 is reasonable if you have a life outside of the arts, like a job or school, but if you’ve got both going on, maybe reduce it to a max. of 2 at a time. If you’re basically freelancing and the zines would be your next projects, apply to as many as you actually know you can handle. Always assume you get into all of them, and plan accordingly. If you don’t get in - more time for other stuff. But especially from the perspective of a zine mod, don’t take on too many if you can’t handle it.
Always, always, ALWAYS pay attention to the zine’s schedule. Check before you even open the tab for the application that you actually got time for the zine. Always be as pessimistic as possible (but still realistically so) because you never know when you’ll be in an art/writing block. If especially final drafts are due around major deadlines from school/uni/anything else important to your life, do yourself a favour and opt out of this zine. You’ll be endlessly stressed and the mods don’t know what to do with you.If you decide on applying to the zine and got in, write down all deadlines in your calendar of choice (I actually have two different calendars so I mark that in both), and if you know yourself as that person who is really forgetful about deadlines, please do everyone a favour and put yourself reminders on what works best for you (alarms, countdowns, reminders via phone, sticky notes in your room, etc.)
Check if you meet all of the zine applicant’s requirements, and if not all, can you work on them so you fit in time before applications close? It’s not worth getting your hopes up if you end up not even being able to participate because they look for certain people.
I would also always check out the zine’s mods/admins and what kind of reputation they have. If they aren’t publicly mentioned anywhere on the zine’s blog/whathaveyou, I would rather evade the zine.Same goes for any weird feeling you get, be it through the language they use (e.g. unprofessional tonality like My Immortal/2000s chat language seems like the mods don’t take it seriously enough unless it is actually the zine’s theme, the use of slurs or inappropriate/rude statements), or appearance of the blog/twitter account, … I personally also would steer around people who are self-acclaimed “antis” even if they support your OTP, this still can get ugly as the atmosphere might be tense/not very welcoming, or even downright hostile.Remember that if you participate, you will be associated with the zine and the zine with you.If it is not a free downloadable zine, what happens with the earned money? If they don’t state anything about it, it really looks shady. Same goes for a claimed Charity Zine where you can’t access any information to which organisation(s) they want to donate.
Here and here are some other really prominent red flags of how to spot possible scammers.
If you are just starting out with zines, it might be wise to rather look for smaller ones and see what comes out of it. An all-applicants-get-in zine is hard to find nowadays I believe, but is still a good opportunity to just get to know deadlines with creative works in a larger project.
Always tell in advance that you (possibly) can’t make a deadline if you got into a zine. Running after people 24/7 is exhausting and annoying and definitely triggers the will to strangle someone much more than you sending a small e-mail with “I’m sorry but I can’t make the deadline because [I’m sick/my dog died/my exams are more stressful than expected/I have to cover for a coworker/we have a big family celebration/…], can I please get an extension (of XX days)?” - please for God’s sake don’t be embarrassed or even scared to tell such things, it happens but it’s always better to know such things a few days or even a day in advance instead of … a week after the deadline actually was supposed to happen. I promise you, bascially all of the mods are very understanding and definitely will help you figure out a solution.
Be kind to other participants and try to get to know them a little better. Fan projects are such a great way to make new friends and actually find people to collaborate with as well, additionally everyone benefits from a good atmosphere on the team. The great thing about most zines having discord channels nowadays is that you can actually communicate with other participants instead of mainly just the mods. Also, if you happen to check out the other contributors you might find several hidden gems of artists/writers!
A bit on portfolios:
Depending a bit on the zine, it always is better for you to have a small compilation of fanworks that actually deal with the zine’s characters/the source material, even if it’s just a more detailed/polished sketch or a slightly longer drabble (between 500 and 1000 words). If it isn’t already required in the application form, it at least shows interest in the source material and the zine itself.
As an artist, have actually polished pieces with (preferrably full-body) characters and real backgrounds (physically interacting characters are always great btw). Think about what you enjoy about zine pieces yourself - you usually don’t discover everything at the first sight, or they just downright awe you so it’s actually worth it to look through the zine once more. Show pieces that are of the same quality because you want to get into a zine. If you apply as a merch artist, also have at least one or two pieces that show a style suited for the merch you apply for.
As a writer, it is good to have at least one solid one-shot between 1-5k words. Mods want to know how you deal with the rather small wordcount that is typical for zines. I really would recommend especially writers to have at least one piece from the source material the zine’s about.
Also, I wouldn’t include anything that is older than max. 3 years, however good and awesome it is. Whether you are an artist or a writer, I will guarantee you that you won’t create works the same way as you did back then. At some point, it’s just dated and you’ll have to say goodbye for good.Mods want to know what they can expect from your zine piece, so it’s also better to have a good average than an outstanding outlier that you are highly unlikely to ever recreate. Show what you usually do with a little bit of extra sprinkles of what they might get, as it is a zine entry. If you have already participated in zines, maybe include one of these pieces, that way they know you have ~experience~ and it gives them more realistic expectations.
Be honest with yourself: Are you actually ready to be in a zine, and is your art of choice, too? If your skill-level barely goes beyond middle-school art class/creative writing, and/or you don’t really have a portfolio to actually show people, maybe hone your skills a bit more as you create more pieces and challenge yourself.
I hate to be that person but I think especially artists are over-eager and just apply whether or not they are even skilled enough. I can guarantee you that just a poorly executed headshot of a character isn’t even close to enough to get into 99% of the zines out there, same goes for conveniently hiding hands behind the character’s back or other strategically placed objects. Know your skill-level, and know when it’s actually realistic to go semi-professional with it, because even if it is about a fun fan experience, mods also want to present a solid product in the end. This is not to discourage you but more as a sisterly advice because when I looked through the apps of our zine, I saw applications on a level where I would have never even dreamt of participating in a zine when I was at that stage.
That became more than expected (and sorry for the little rant at the end) - I hope that was somewhat helpful and what you had in mind, nonnie

The Arlathvhen: A Dragon Age Fan-Zine
Tumblr media
“Aneth ara, lethallin” You arrive at the camp, feet aching from a long journey Someone hands you a drink as you sit, back resting against the aravel. The air smells of firewood and roasted meats, you close your eyes. Music begins playing, a cue that makes everyone cheer. The arlathvhen begins.
ZINE INFORMATION
This zine was made by & for artists/writers of color within the Dragon Age fandom who want to show off their Dalish Clans celebrating Arlathvhen in their own “non-traditional” way (ex. A sea-faring Dalish clan that celebrates arlathvhen by setting out to sea, holding their celebration on wooden boats).
We encourage originality when it comes to your clans, but feel free to join if you have clans with lore/customs based off of the canon Dragon Age universe.
Only 20 artists/writers will be accepted, entries are 1 per person.
We are also accepting artist/writer collabs, for more information on this, please refer to this link!
It will be FREE & made into a PDF to download on Gumroad!
