Hi! I’m fairly good at sewing (I’ve made my own dresses before) and I want to alter an OP I own to have the zipper under the arm instead of along the back. I just find back zippers really annoying and uncomfortable to zip up/down without help. Besides leaving a ‘keyhole’ so I can fit my head in (and if you have suggestions for that I’d appreciate it too!) do you have suggestions or warnings for doing this sort of project? I’m not seeing any obvious pitfalls but you have a lot more sewing experience than I do. Thank you!

You've got the main thing down there:

A zipper in the center back, when unzipped, makes the neck, shoulders, and waist larger. Since a center back zip is open at the top, this can make these areas as large as you need them to be to get in.

A side zip in a dress really only changes one thing: is makes the waist of the dress temporarily large enough for you to put your head and shoulders through. This is totally fine in a lot of situations, but you need to be aware that (and you just stated that you are aware that) this means that your head has to fit through the head hole.

One of my favorite examples of this is the $14 Mary Magdalene replica, versus the original.

I'm pretty sure that the original (right) has an armpit zipper. It definitely doesn't have a center back zipper, like my shitty replica does.

The original can get away with an armpit zip, because this center front button area is real buttons. You unbutton the neck hole, put your head through it, and then button it back up.

The replica used a solid piece up here, so it needs the back zip to get your head on the thingy.

As for installing the zipper, the main thing to remember is that the zipper can't add more than like 80" of its length to the waist measurement when it's unzipped. If you put in a 10" zipper, for instance, when you open it, it'll only add about 8" to the waist. If your head and shoulders are only 8" bigger in circumference than your waist measure, that'll work, but most people need a 15-18" zipper. I buy all my zippers at 22" and shorten them when I'm done. This extra length lets me keep the slide out of the way while I install them.
