Attribution: Zizi aka Marcel Drouin (France, 1914-?). Animal, no date, colored pencil and felt tip marker on cardboard, 16.6 x 19.6 cm. Seen in Les Contes de Perrault Illustrés par L'art Brut, eds. Celine Delavaux and Bernadette Bricout (Paris: Éditions Diane de Selliers, 2020). I am always interested in graphic accompaniments to Puss in Boots by Charles Perrault (France, 1628-1703), and this one is particularly interesting because of the juxtaposition of the classic story with the work of an outsider artist. @editionsdianedeselliers

On May 21, 1998, the first soundtrack (ost) for the popular anime series "Cowboy Bebop" was released. One of the standouts of the series was the jazz inspired music. The show would kick off with these words, "I think it's time we blow this scene. Get everybody and the stuff together. Okay, three, two, one let's jam," and then launch into the driving theme "Tank!" The theme was even used by the figure skater Kevin Reynolds, dressed as the show's lead Spike Spiegel, in one of his short programs. Most of the music was performed by composer Yoko Kanno's band "Seatbelts" that she put together for the show. The first album contained the tracks "Tank! (opening theme)", "Rush", "Spokey Dokey", "Bad Dog No Biscuits", "Cat Blues", "Cosmos", "Space Lion", "Waltz for Zizi", "Piano Black", "Pot City", "Too Good Too Bad", "Car24", "The Egg and I", "Felt Tip Pen", "Rain (lyrics by Tim Jensen and performed by Steve Conte)", "Digging My Potato", and "Memory - music box". Okay but going off of the last Taron and Jameson ask/writing, what if Tee were to accidentally fall asleep 👀👀👀 and not wake up until it was time to open the restaurant up again? What should Jameson do then? 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀

(In the AU where @for-the-love-of-angst's Taron befriends a skittish, nervous Jameson who never made it to Nat's and has been living on the streets. Directly follows this little microfic)

Taron groans as he wakes. All the old aches always hit hardest after he sleeps, when he does sleep. Scars protest as he stretches arms over his head. His back sends a zing of pain and he grunts. The bed beneath him feels oddly solid, and Zizi's warmth against his side seems off, too.

Sun streams in through the slits of the blinds over the restaurant's windows.

Wait.

He freezes, coming fully awake all at once, and looks to the side, blinking the last of sleep from bleary eyes. His laptop is still set up, long since shifted to black from the menu screen that must have given up sooner or later. Plates lay on the floor with a couple unfinished crusts, criss-crossed. X marks the spot, he thinks, and wonders where the hell that came from.

He pushes himself up on his elbows, trying to force his tired mind to function. The warm body against him mumbles something soft and loving, throwing an arm over his waist.

"... Stay," The raspy, whispering voice that belongs to the body whispers. "C'mon. Call in sick f'r once, asshole."

Taron swallows hard, ignores his suddenly racing heart, and carefully looks down at... Jameson, lying next to him.

The stray is curled against him like a cat, his patches of hair oddly soft and ticklish against Taron's forearm. In sleep, all his sharp angles soften, and he looks... years younger.

His voice sounded younger, too. And impossibly full of... love.

What happened to the person the kid had loved like that, that he ended up angry and scarred and scared? Taron rubs a hand over his face.

Probably better not to think about it too much. Or he'll start asking himself those questions, too.

There's a soft cough and Taron flinches, looking up to see Matteo, over by the door to the kitchen, looking down at him with eyebrows nearly at his hairline.

Taron feels a sudden wild urge to say this isn't what it looks like, and just as suddenly has to hold back something like panicked laughter. Zizi would be laughing, if it were her. She's going to find this hilarious when he tells her later.

"... Guess I fell asleep," He says instead. "Get started doing the opening stuff for me, yeah? Give us... Give me ten minutes and I'll be up."

Matteo just nods. "You got it, boss. Do I need to back you up on anything, or..."

Whatever he thinks, he doesn't show a single emotion on his face.

"No," Taron says firmly. "You don't. Just go get started on chopping onions, please."

Matteo heads back into the kitchen. Jameson hums, nuzzling against Taron's arm, giving a little whine when he pulls away, putting distance between them. "... What-" Jameson's eyes blink open, then, and he looks up at Taron. Dark eyes flick from the windows - the sunlight - and then back to Taron.

And then, to his shock, the kid blushes.

"Hey, uh, fell asleep. Don't need to worry," Taron adds quickly, before the stray can say anything. "But I need to get started on setup for the day, so... We need to clean this up. Yeah?"

"... Yeah. Shit. Um." There's a beat of silence. Taron watches all those sharp edges come back to Jameson's face, watches him hunch his shoulders in self-defense against blows that he doesn't have to worry about anymore. Not here, anyway. "Fuck, I'm sorry-"

"Don't be. Fell asleep." Taron shrugs. "It happens. I need to go back home to check on the animals before we open. Would you-"

"Yeah, I'll fuck off, no problem." Jameson sounds oddly earnest, getting to his feet immediately. Taron can tell it hurts him to do it, but that jaw sets in a line and the stray, like he always does, does his best to hide it.

Taron thinks about the soft face of the sleeping stray when compared to the way he looks ready to bolt at any sudden moves when awake. "I was going to ask if you could help Matteo with the prep. I'll pay you for your time-"

"No need," The stray cuts him off. "You gave me a place to sleep, right? I'll-... I'll go help now."

He all but flees, and Taron hears him greet Matteo. Everyone in the restaurant is fond of the kid, really. No one minds him working here and there or hanging out in a booth for hours when the weather is bad. He's a good worker, anyway.

Taron just has to find a way to sneak money into a pocket or something so he'll allow himself to be paid.

Oh Anon, what a question to ask. I briefly mentioned some of my favourite pieces last year, which is probably the best place to start. I, to no one's suprise, accumulated more great things since then that I will eventually show.

I figure I should expand on the items shown in that post as well, so see below for something I absolutely love!

This is a Japanese promotional programme for the 2019 movie, and unlike the English promotional booklet, contains all manner of information on the movie, creative team, cast, and musical. It really is a great piece.

What makes this piece so special (if it was not obvious by the front cover), is that it was signed by a large group of the named cast from the movie.
