The Courtship of Rachel Palpatine - A Regency Tale
After a long sojourn away, Ben Organa-Solo returns to the ton of Chandrila to accept his inheritance as the new Duke of Naberrie. Pressured by his new position and his mother to marry, in a fit of rebellion Ben concocts a scheme and makes a wager with his best friend:
Court and marry the granddaughter of his family’s arch-nemesis.

“Then take this opportunity to learn,” he said with a lopsided smile. “Let’s play a game. We may ask each other three questions and we must answer honestly, no matter what it is.”
Miss Palpatine looked dubious. “Any question?”
Ben met her eyes. “Any question. Would you like to go first?”
“Yes.” She looked away and for a few moments they strolled in silence. Ben assumed she was creating her list, just as he was. “All right.”
“Ask away.”

Rey’s finger hovered over Ben’s image in her phone. Anxiety threatened to overwhelm her, fear that he wouldn’t pick up or if he did they would get into another fight and the situation would worsen.
With a deep breath she pushed those fears aside and got within a millimeter of pushing the button when a taxi pulled up to the house. Distracted, Rey lowered her phone. The taxi door opened and the last person she ever expected to see hopped out.

“Says the man used to facing down a thousand cameras,” Rey muttered.
Bree wasn’t paying any attention to her parents. Her face was pressed against the car window as they rolled up to the entrance. At least she wasn’t intimidated.
“Says the guy who knows you,” Ben retorted gently. “And there aren’t a thousand cameras. More like…a hundred.”
“Yeah. A hundred cameras is so, so different from a thousand.”
The limousine came to a stop and two attendants in blue jackets approached the door. Rey’s hand tightened around Ben’s, but her attention was on the crowd outside.
“Hey.” Rey turned to him and he leaned in to kiss her chastely. “I’m with you,” he whispered against her cheek. “Just follow my lead.”

Dame Holdo herself appeared, as if summoned by Rey’s words. Rey smiled brightly, sincerely delighted to see the dame. After the two women bowed to each other, Dame Holdo turned to Hux, who bowed as well.
“Mr. Hux, do excuse me, but I must introduce Rachel to someone.”
Before Hux could express the displeasure that was written all over his pale face, Rey was tugged through the crowd by her illustrious hostess.

Ben couldn’t look away from Snoke, enthralled by the glorious future he promised. He believed Ben could make the Republic better as a senator and become president, like Anakin Skywalker, and do even more.

“I am. If I wasn’t, why do I love you?”

The yellow streetlights illuminated him in profile. A black overcoat and black hat protected him from the foggy weather. The hat was tilted a bit rakishly but really it was to cover the scar that rent one side of his face in two. His was a unique face anyway, long and asymmetrical with a large nose and full lips. The scar might have made him grotesque, but it missed his eyes, and his eyes softened everything else. They were whiskey-brown and gentle, exuding emotion even when his expression was stoic.
She supposed that’s why…
“You sure about this?”
Rey pulled the collar of her coat up against a sudden chill in the air. “I’m sure.”
He looked at her askance. “So…you’re not scared of me? At all?”
Turning to face him, Rey shook her head. “No. We all have our bad sides. That doesn’t outweigh anything good I know about you.”
Ben met her gaze, his own grave. “Rey. There’s no going back if we do this. If we go in there, you’re stuck with me for who knows how long. I have to know for certain: Will you be okay with me?”
She couldn’t help but smile, a slight upturn of her mouth, but a smile nonetheless.
“Yes. If I wasn’t then…why do I love you?”
He sucked in a sharp breath. “You shouldn’t say that.”
“It’s the truth,” Rey murmured. “I don’t expect you to feel the same. But I wanted you to know. Before…” He was silent; his hat shielded his eyes from her, leaving his true sentiment unknown. Rey sighed. “We should go.”
She never finished her step into the street, because Ben abruptly caught her hand and pulled her into his arms. The kiss was rough and desperate at first, toothy and crushing, but quickly softened and he took her face in his hands, wide palms covering her cheeks as their lips met again and again.
They pulled apart slowly, but only enough to catch their breath. Rey’s heart drummed in her chest. He felt it, too. In that moment, she feared nothing. Not as long as he was by her side.
Ben had not dropped his hands from her face. He stared down at her, allowing her to see his eyes. As always, they betrayed everything he felt. Fear and worry, but also...
“I love you.”
Rey nodded.
“I know.”
“I won’t let anything happen to you,” he swore.
“I know.”
He inhaled deeply and released her, but only to take her hand again. “Follow my lead,” he said.
Together, they disappeared into the fog.
