Bird, Tiger, Serpents and a Pair of Antlers: Warring States Art Device
Another remarkable sur of the pre-Taoist period.
The sculptural group is dominated by a mighty Bird, whose wings are complemented by antlers. Some have rashly classified it as the Phoenix, according to another version it is a Crane. However, I would warn against light-minded ornithological typing. The thumbnail Tiger serves as a pedestal for the Bird, pressing two serpentine bodies with its paws. The coiled snakes are devouring a pair of fliers.
The artifact may turn out to be a drum stand common at the time. Other figurines of antlered birds standing on tigers are known. This common motif unites the spiritual animals of the Lower and Upper Worlds. The amalgamous zoomorphic imagery is probably of shamanic origin.
Antlered and winged beings were also a widespread pattern in depiction of the zhenmushou (鎮墓獸), tomb guardians. The solemn or ferocious creatures served as the owner's spiritual animals in the afterlife and guides on the ascent to Heavens.
The entire lacquered wood sculpture group is painted black with subtle gold and red ornamentation. The object was unearthed from the Tomb No. 1 in Jiuliandun (九連墩1號墓), Zaoyang, Hubei. Now it is in Hubei Provincial Museum (湖北省族館).

[Horses of the Wild 旷野之马] [Design/Concept] TotK Link as pegasus🐴
If you don't know what is Horses of the Wild, it's a zoomorphic BotW/TotK AU.
More TotK news are here so let's take a look at TotK Link!
First of all, a more recent art here! And you can see another one here
Tumblr media
(Yeah that's my "true form" of arts! 😂 For me, these really old HotW artworks and comics I post before looks awkward now.)
An early concept in July, 2021! We even didn't know the name of sequel is TotK at that time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And clothes design of TotK Link! It's REALLY HARD to design clothes which look asymmetrical and primitive, for four-legged animals. I spent TONS of time thinking how these fabrics work on body of a horse. I used a Schleich model to do some tests.
I may adjust some details of this suit later.

Căscioarele (Călărași County), the most famous find from the Neolithic site excavated in the late 1960s on a Danube island named Ostrovelul.
The site has been attributed to the Gumelnița (Karanovo VI) culture, one of the most spectacular phenomena of the eastern Balkans during the 5th millennium BC.
The Gumelniţa culture is remarkable by the richness of its anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations, but the miniature sanctuary found in the earliest occupation phase at Căscioarele trumps them all.
Although smaller models of houses (believed to be sanctuaries) appeared on other Gumelniţa sites as well, both in southern Romania and in Bulgaria, the Căscioarele specimen has so far remained unique. It has been dated between 4,800 and 4,550 BC and may be seen in the permanent exhibit of the Lower Danube Museum in Călărași.

Large pottery tile of a tiger
Han dynasty (202 BC-AD 220), China
19 1⁄4 in. (48.6 cm.) wide, softwood frame
The tile is modeled in relief with a tiger with pronounced stripes emerging from the right side and stretching its forelegs.
On loan: Denver Art Museum, prior to 1983.
A very similar striding tiger can be seen decorating a pottery title illustrated in, “A Brief Report on the Cleanup of Hollow Brick Han Tombs in Xianyang City,” Kaogu 1982:3, pl. 1:1.M34. See, also, the Eastern Han pottery architectural element molded with more stylized depictions of tigers, which are shown flanking a bi disc, illustrated by Olov Jansé in Briques et Objets Céramiques Funéraires de l'Epoque des Han, C.T. Loo & Cie, Paris, 1936, pl. XVIII (3a-c), and later sold at Christie’s New York, Fine Chinese Art from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, 18 March 2009, lot 319.

Janus-like zoomorphic bronze item from the late Shang dynasty
Oval Shang dynasty pot with two pig heads facing in opposite directions. The bronze handles were recast in later eras. Exhibited in Shanghai Museum.
Such mirrored zoo- and anthropomorphic patterns were conceived, presumably so that guests always see the vessel from the front side. It’s a common motif in the paradoxical design of the early bronze.

The legendary phoenix or simurgh made up of the Arabic words for strength, love, hope, rise, faith and protection: القوة ، الحب ، الأمل ، تنشأ ، الإيمان ، الحماية This type of calligraphy design is often termed a zoomorph, words creating the shape of an animal. Sometimes the words form a tightly bounded shape. In this case I preferred much looser strokes to give the feeling of the bird rising up in ecstatic flight full of strength and hope. Original calligraphy design by S J Thomas. www.worldcalligraphy.com
