Back in 2004 my mother and I went to Dracula the musical on Broadway.  This version of Dracula was from composer Frank Wildhorn.  We had front row center seats and it was the best experience I had ever had at a Broadway musical.   Many years later the musical went to Germany and several new songs were added to the production.  One of those songs was Zu Ende.  In English language performances Zu Ende was called "It's Over."   This is a fan recording of Zu Ende / "It's Over" in English.   This song was not in the version of the play I saw in 2004 but it has become a favorite song from the musical.   It's a duet between Dracula and Van Helsing.   There's no truly great official English language recording of this song.   This fan version was the best I could find. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSeuYbuffyY  

Dracula has always been my favorite classic monster.   He's the only classic monster to ever actually scare me and at the same time I have a soft spot for romantic portrayals of the character as well.  There's something thrilling about the combination of fear and charismatic charm.  I know the character wasn't that charismatic in the original novel but most film versions have a balance of romantic and yet fierce predator.

I can still recall the moment I realized the character of Count Dracula actually scared me.  It was 2006. And I was alone watching a History Channel documentary about the real castle Dracula.  Bran Castle is used for tourists but the one that Vlad The Impaler (Vlad Dracula) actually lived in was the now ruined Poenari Castle.

The documentary mentioned how locals saw lights and heard strange noises up at the castle so they sent two priests to bless the place. On their way up to the castle a storm broke out so they had to do the blessing from a distance.  And I remembered, in that moment, that the fictional vampire was supposed to have weather-control powers such as conjuring storms.  

It was at that moment that the door creaked open and I practically jumped out of my skin.  That's when I knew Dracula actually had the power to scare me.  

I had never realized I had a fear of Dracula until that moment.  It was so subtle and unconscious that I hadn't realized the fear was even there in my mind.   It's strange when you realize you're afraid of something and you didn't know you were afraid before.

It's like when I was watching "Let the Right One In" for the first time.  It happened to be snowing outside and it was at the part where Eli is scaling the wall of the hospital and I was thinking 'Ah, this isn't so scary."  Suddenly the power went out and for just a split second I thought "Oh, crap!  The child vampire is going to get me!"

And back to Dracula.  I developed a fond respect for the classic monster after that.   And he became a part of my Gothic Horror cycle of obsessions along with Geothe's Faust and the literary Frankenstein Monster and most recently Neil Gaiman's The Sandman.
