More Ouran redesigns!
Below the cut, listen to me ramble about the art choices I made in the redesigns, please. (Honey, Yasuchika, Kasanoda, Renge)
+A little sketch of Haruhi & Tamaki 😊
Tumblr media
I redid Honey's because I was so unhappy with the first version, but I like this one a LOT more. He kinds of looks like an idol, but I'm not mad at it lol
The main thing I don't like about the canon design of Honey is that he looks like a literal child (wow new idea alert) and somehow in my first redesign I didn't get rid of that problem?? And I just didn't like the way that one turned out art-wise.
So! This time, I made his face a lot less round and decided to give him shorter hair in a more natural/ash blonde color. Instead of going full l*lita, I was aiming more for "soft boy" & I spent a good minute just coloring his eyes so they look pretty magical (or a bit creepy, I can't tell lol) but I wanted him to have long pretty lashes. Also, I added a little scar on the bridge of his nose to hint at his hidden violent side
(That shirt is entirely improvised lmao)
Anyway, Yasuchika!
Tumblr media
I always felt kind of bad for him (for that one episode that he appeared lol), so I wanted to lean into the fact that he's kinda bitter Honey left the Judo club but still admires him a lot.
I had to remember what he looked like first, but I actually really like his design in the manga so its practically the same lol. The hair is slightly different though. And, it's subtle, but his hair is bleached here as a tiny nod that he wants to be more like his brother, though he didn't go full blonde. And since their hair and eyes are different, I now headcanon that they have different moms, because I can and it tugs at my heartstrings for some reason.
Now, Kasadona's and Renge's were done kind of a while ago, so the art is marginally worse imo, but anyway
Onto Kasanoda!
Tumblr media
Another character that I always loved and felt sad about! This time he has two episodes, I think.
Since it's important to his character, I had to keep him looking scary, but that doesn't mean I couldn't make him look sad too! I love aiming for subtle expressions lol, I remember this one was really fun.
I can't tell you why I made his hair wavy/curly, I just wanted that, but those little shaved bits at the corners of his hairline were very intentional; it's meant to kind of mimic devil horns just to solidify that he's seen as kind of evil and whatever. And his eyes! I think that blizzard nickname/reputation (i can't remember) is really unique, so it exaggerates his cold glare.
(Trying to avoid saying 'kind of' so much, jeez)
Last up, Renge!
Tumblr media
She also kind of looks like an idol, mostly 'cause of the pose and little sparkle, though. And oddly enough, I really didn't like her when I was originally watching the show (thought she was annoying lol) but I kind of adore her now because..
This girl is a nerd, she's silly, she's a cosplayer, a complete madwoman, and girl boss! (Character-wise, I only really take issue with the 'fuj*shi' 'y*oi stan' part, so that's cut for my version) But I really wanted to show that more fun, adventurous part of her, so she has pink dye on the underside, with her hair pulled into this big red bow.
I don't have many thoughts on her past what I already said, she just deserves to be cute and have fun. But I do think she should be in on the secret that Haruhi's a girl, and they should be good friends, the show is just lacking in girl friendships. (Excluding the Zuka club, they're full on lesbians and the show portrayed them so weirdly imo.)
(***I only censored some words cuz I don't want anything to end up in my feed lol)

『まだ結婚できない男』“Mada Kekkon Dekinai Otoko” (2019)
Tumblr media
Known in English as “The Man Who Still Can't Get Married” or “He Who Still Can't Marry”, this 10-parter series is a sequel to 2006's (yup, very long break in between) “The Man Who Can't Get Married”『結婚できない男』(Kekkon Dekinai Otoko).
Knowing how sequels usually turn out (i.e. no good), and especially for one which was made over a decade after the first one, I was very apprehensive about starting this at first, no less because some of my favourite characters from the first didn't make it back as well.
But decided to finally give it a go and six episodes in and more than halfway through this sequel now, I can say with relief that while I'm still somewhat disappointed certain characters from the first didn't return (and didn't even get so much as a mention — as if they never existed), I'm glad this sequel manages to retain the vibe of the original quite well. Perhaps it helped too that I went into watching this with low expectations, so things can only look up if your expectations were already low, right? :)
Anyway, while the new supporting cast (in the form of Kuwano's new employees) fail to make much of an impression on me, I'm very happy with the addition of Yoshida Yoh and Inamori Izumi as the two new main female leads.
Perhaps there's a little bias here because I already am familiar with these two actresses and like some of their previous work, but I thought both managed to fill in the shoes left by their predecessors (Natsukawa Yui and Takashima Reiko respectively) very well.
Especially with Yoshida Yoh. I thought her chemistry with Abe Hiroshi was fantastic and at a lot of times, perhaps even enjoyed her character and interactions with other characters more than I did with Natsukawa Yui. Not that I dislike Natsukawa or anything, mind.
And I'm very glad Eiji and Kuwano's family made it back! Especially the character of Kuwano's mother; love that old lady and the actress (Kusabue Mitsuko) who played her too.
Also, special mention goes to the production team for putting care into recreating Kuwano's flat and office (and Kuwano's sister's house), making it much the same as the original. It's minor details like that that I appreciate; tells me too that at least the MKDO team attempted to satisfy fans of the original and are not pulling this sequel solely because they ran out of ideas for new stories! Hah!
Another special mention goes to Tatsuo the Pug aka, Ken the 2nd! :D
To sum up, I'd say a surprisingly good sequel, worth a watch if one does not mind its redundancy, the somewhat formulaic plot, and the now ruined implied happy ending of the first series! Hah!
Edited-to-add: Binge-watched and finished the series today (6th May). So, I did mention earlier the plot was formulaic, right? Right, more emphasis on the formulaic, is all I have to add. If you are already a fan of the first season like me, you would recognize the obvious similarities to the first season. There's really nothing new added in terms of character or even situational development.
Still, that's not to say it's necessarily a bad thing. “If it's not broken, don't fix it” as the saying goes, and this formula clearly works for “Kekkon”, for its strength is not really in plot, but in characters. And the characters old and new, still manage to charm me. :)

seems like background projection screens are currently The Thing for zuka? sooooo many of the most recent shows are using them (not counting yamataikoku because it was written by nakamura satoru, who lives in 2004)
i kind of like it, esp in all for one they’re used really well and really add to the atmosphere

rant: makaze suzuho/hoshikaze madoka
it's the end of kazekaze. i'm having a lot of feelings, i *need* to write them down, and i don't exactly think i can ramble it all in a letter to my girl. take it or leave it.
i've only been a zuka fan for a little over a year, but i immediately latched onto yurika - and, subsequently, madoka. they're my golden combi, the perfect team, my greatest source of joy during this past year which has been one of the worst in my life, as for many others. whenever i felt down, i would go watch a kazekaze show - more often than not aqua vitae!! - and it kept me going.
before the world closed down, me and my class had planned a japan trip. i was so excited bc not only was i going to japan, but i would also have a chance to see kazekaze live!! flying sapa was supposed to be my first live show, the first time i saw my girls in person, and that was a motivating thought when i got hospitalised. i needed to get well so that i could go see sapa! of course, we never did go on that trip. i never got to see sapa live.
i held on to the hope that one day, i would at least see my golden combi live. by the time they would be t*idanning, the world would be open. i never anticipated that something other than a t*idan would take away that chance. and though i've cried multiple times since reading about the transfer, i don't think it really hit me before now; my chance of seeing kazekaze in person is gone. my golden combi is no longer together.
in the past week - nay, the past *day* - i've cried more than i've done in at least half a year, maybe more. it may be overreacting, but i'm not just mourning my golden combi, i'm mourning the joy they gave me and the hope that kept me going bc surely it would all be better soon and i could go see them? that's gone now, and thus i mourn the greatest thing in my life for the past year.
yurika, madoka, thank you for making me smile. thank you for helping me pull through, day after day, when the hours seemed endless and i had no one to talk to. when i felt lonely. when everything seemed hopeless. without knowing it, you were there for me when no one else could. i will forever be grateful for what you have given me.
i wish kazekaze the best of luck as not-kazekaze. i hope they enjoy performing with their new partner(/troupe), and i hope they're happy and healthy. they deserve nothing but the best, and i hope that's what they get. i'll keep supporting them always <3 here's to another year or two (or three?) as top!
i don't think i have any tears left to cry by now tbh. watching raku on two hours of sleep after a very stressful week was uhhhh not the best idea - but i regret nothing. i’m sure that by tomorrow (or some day next week) everything’ll be back to normal and i’ll be anticipating what’s to come. however, for tonight, i’m taking the freedom to be upset. i feel like i’ve earned it.

It’s not quite been a week but I’m going to take some time to ramble at length about Kiki and this transfer business.  Later I’m going to make a post about Hanagumi’s troupe structure and who might be fighting it out for the soon-to-be-vacant sanbante position.  But today is not that day. This is is kinda long, so consider yourselves warned ha ha ha...
Now that I’ve had several days to let this sit and percolate and let the sudden anxiety of SHIT SHIT SHIT I NEED TO SEND ANOTHER LETTER two days after I had mailed my most recent one (and have spent the last few days since then wringing my hands over the many mistakes of my miserable Japanese realized of course only after it was sent) wear off along with speaking with people more experienced and obviously level headed than me, I still have a lot of nuanced emotions about losing my favorite actress from my favorite troupe.  However at the end of the day, unless they suddenly decide to knock her from her position at a time when she’s actually been really strong (unlikely but something I still have some anxiety about), or (worse even) make her compete with a classmate whom I also tremendously adore and now sadly can no longer low-key support, the positives far outweigh the negatives (which essentially for me personally amount to 1. her not being in hanagumi, and 2. no more KikiBei romances which is a HUGE travesty imo), even if the move was potentially less to benefit her than others. I wrote a huge long post and then deleted most of it because it got a bit too rambling and waxing poetic about my thoughts of all her past roles, but overall I am super proud of how much she’s changed recently.  2016 was a difficult year for her in part because she got stuck in a rut with roles that were either repeats or very similar to one another, and while I still think she performed well in all of them, at the end of the day none of them really pushed her.  In that sense, it’s easy to see how she might have faded into the background for some people, being typecast as a young fresh faced supporting-role love interest and/or Mirio’s BFF.  While she really does fit these types of roles well (and it was her bright sunshine smile that first hooked me), they’re not really much of a challenge for her as an actress.  Additionally, she had to share two of her four roles that year, in part to make sure other high-ranked otokoyaku got their required stage time (of which I don’t begrudge the actresses themselves at all and realize that MeMy is a hard show to cast, but also have a hard time imagining them having any other current nibante at the time split their roles in the same way). I’ve always thought her solid and well-rounded in her abilities, but had been itching to see something that broke her out of this trend and to see her really stretch herself, which thankfully - FINALLY - we got this year.  Ger was a wonderful role for her to dig down into more tumultuous emotions that she hadn’t really had the chance to express since Rudolf, and after I finally got to see it I was so, SO thrilled.  She’s absolutely heart-wrenching to watch in her expressions and voice, and I love, love, love her with Beichan (Ousaki Ayaka) who is an incredible actress in her own right (she can either cry on command or is able to really get into the moment so well that she cries anyway because I’ve seen her do it multiple times, one of which from the 3rd row and it’s impressive as hell).  Ger is a much more interesting character to me than Giy (and ok there’s some obvious bias there), and I wish there had been time to explore more of his reactions to events within the show.  She still could retain part of the kind of “pure/warm-hearted” character within the role while also being able to bring so much more nuance and depth to him.  The subtleties in her expressions and just the way she looks at Beichan will tear out your heart in the most wonderful, wonderful way.  (I’d be remiss in not giving a big shout out to Ueda Kumiko for creating yet another truly heartwrenching masterpiece that allowed so many actresses to show off different sides of themselves and at some point I will rave about Chinatsu’s ability to just disappear into every single role she gets).
UNFORTUNATELY the lead time on getting DVDs of small theater shows is usually 4 months so I’ve been writhing in agony listening to the MY HERO soundtrack over and over again before I get the chance to see the show, but of the handful of people I know who did get to see it they all said they thoroughly enjoyed it and that Kiki was “SO COOL” (literally every person said it).  From what little I do know of it it seems like Noah is rather rough around the edges as a character and not just a pure bright beam of sunshine necessarily, so I’m super interested to see what she does with that combined with the incredibly fun ridiculousness of a Takarazuka version of the super sentai genre.
And now finally - FIIINNALLYY!!! - we get her as an actual villain, something she’s been wanting to do for literally years at this point, and I have either seen or been told by so many people that she is INCREDIBLE (despite the rest of the show apparently falling a little flat) just like I knew she would be, and I am so so SO SO SO HYPE to see this for my own two eyes in a few weeks.
tl;dr, she’s really evolved in the past year and I’m really proud and excited to see her coming into her own, but if I really sit down and consider it, if she stays in Hanagumi she might never have enough traction to really step out of Mirio’s shadow.  This delays her ascension to top star, certainly, but since she’s only just had this great momentum start this year, if she had stayed and Mirio did retire next year, I’m not entirely certain she’d be ready.  But now, it’s like people are suddenly sitting up and paying more attention to her (not that she’s been completely invisible because otherwise she wouldn’t be nibante, but when you’re also nibante among the likes of Daimon, Yurika, Beni (previously) and Miyaruri, it’s tough).
So, I’m sad for her to leave Hanagumi, which has been so important to me the past few years, but I am so very, very excited to see her dynamic with Yurika, for her to move into illegal-gumi and continue to expand past the cute/fluffy roles and really strut her stuff.  Because she has it, and she’s always had it, but now with a change-up she will hopefully actually get to show it off.
TRUTHFULLY despite multiple reassurances I will be super nervous about her actual standing until I see cast lists for the next Soragumi shows and also those nibante feathers on her back again.  I also have a lot of mixed feelings about what this means for Aichan, whom I also super adore and is so, so wonderful.  But regardless, when I think of the possibilities of Kiki AND Aichan together in the same show I am INDESCRIBABLY EXCITED because I love me the 93rd class so much it hurts.
CONGRATS YOU MADE IT TO THE END.  I’m happy to hear if anyone has further thoughts or questions even though this was mostly gratuitous lmao.  This is honestly the spark notes version because I could go on and on about her (I mean who couldn’t about their favorite), BUT I digress.

So like I’m thinking back to when i watched Avatar: The Last Airbender. Its still one of my absolute favorites shows in existence. But now I’m thinking a little too deeply about it. Like how Aang isn’t the last airbender. Just hear me out!
Aang is the last airbender in the sense that he is the last one who knows their culture and everything that the Fire Nation destroyed. However, there are airbenders who survived the masscure and went into hiding. These airbenders could have had families which in turn would make their children airbenders, and their grandchildren airbenders.
For example: Ty Lee. She’s a “nonbender” but lets take a look, firstly at her appearance. She doesn’t look like the traditional Fire Nation citizen, not like Azula, Zuka, or even Mai. She looks a little bit more like Aang in appearance than them. And her skillset is somewhat reminiscent of airbenders as well. Its tied to air in the way of her balance and her ability to “fly” through the air.
I honestly look back at the show, and my mind tells me that Ty Lee is possibly a descendant of an airbender that managed to escape. And it would makes sense. Think about it. Airbenders who managed to escape, and one meets a fire nation partner, has a child and then their child gets married to a nobleman/woman? This then results in Ty Lee who may or may not actually be an airbender without even realizing it.
Idk im just rambling and i doubt anyone even cares but food for thought :/ i think atla probably had airbenders who didn’t know they were airbenders and aang was the last in the sense that he was the only “original” airbender left.
