Printed Matter / Druckwerk
Karel Martens with Jaap van Triest and Robin Kinross
Hyphen Press, London 2001, Second Edition, 208 pages, 17,3 x 23,6 cm, paperback, ISBN 0 90 7259 20 0

The work of Karel Martens occupies an intriguing place in the present European art-and-design landscape. Martens can be placed in the tradition of Dutch modernism – in the line of figures such as Piet Zwart, H.N. Werkman, Willem Sandberg. Yet he maintains some distance from the main developments of our time: from both the practices of routinized modernism and of the facile reactions against this. His work is both personal and experimental. At the same time, it is publicly answerable. Over the now 50 years of his practice, Martens has been prolific as a designer of books. He has also made contributions in a wide range of design commissions, including stamps, coins, signs on buildings. Intimately connected with this design work has been his practice as an artist. This started with geometric and kinetic constructions, and was later developed in work with the very material of paper; more recently he has been making relief prints from found industrial artefacts. This book looks for new ways to show and discuss the work of a designer and artist, and is offered in the same spirit of experiment and dialogue that characterizes the work it presents.

Part 2: my Personal Opinion
Now, considering I refered to is as an epic blunder, obviously I am cringing in hindsight. I can understand how for the people from this specific time period, most of whom not having ever seen a black person outside of racist caricatures, would not understand that this could offend some and how it would come to backfire upon them. Still, I too have a icky taste in my mouth for using a specific group of people for commercial reasons. However, that doesn't mean I agree and am happy, with the way it turnt out. In the 80s, there actually was black person who got to play Sinterklaas and there was an entire uproar with the black people in my country included, saying that Sinterklaas is white and the Zwarte Pieten are black. There were some individuals who got hurt, but it never got to the level where the concept actually got called into question, until BLM made a documentary about it and lied about the cultural history behind what painting your skin black meant in our culture. Then protest groups were formed, some of those were legit teased in their childhood, but most were just greedy attention whores, a very notorious example being a Dutch celebrity named Sylvana Simons. She had been one of those celebrities who always flopped and just seemed to latch onto anything to get herself attention. She had switched into politics just around the time the documentary dropped and she latched onto their narrative like a leech. I used to follow art classes with this black girl who actually defended our cultural usage of the Zwarte Pieten and she called Sylvana a crazy banana herself, saying the holiday wasn't meant for adult politics but for the kids. And that is the running sentiment across the anti-protesters, that adults are crashing a children's party as they really do. Because these protestors in a sea of children is a safety hazard, and some towns literally felt forced to comply the agenda's new alternative when they wanted to do the Zwarte Pieten concept. These protests aren't peaceful, when they are literally intimidating a parade filled with children. These protestors are legit bullies, and it got to the point where we got called out by the UN for our tradition. Despite the fact its actually is also very similar to a Persian tradition that actually got put on the world heritage list by the UN... (Dutch Irani actually have also publically defended our tradition because they could see the similarities to their tradition). The new alternative they created, was rainbow colored Pieten, like pink and yellow. Another alternative that has been opted was having your face smudged with black paint like dirty stains but even that look has been criticized by the protestors. Personally I loathe the rainbow concept. Our ancestors painted their skin black as it was the color of death. That's like changing the color of St. Patrick's day, you can't do that! How do all the centuries old childrens songs make sense if they're no longer black? I personally prefer the smudges alternative, but my personal choice? Stop imitating black people, ditch the fake afros and reintroduce bits of the original look!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I look at these Heilung pictures, I am like, yes! That looks cool, and as a woman I really am digging the alternative look for women. It brings back the Holda theme, as she was both called the White Lady as well as The Black Grandmother (see, how we have habit of nicknames revolving mystical figures of death using the word 'Black'? Zwarte Piet literally used to be our nickname for the grim reaper). I want to keep the roots of my culture alive and not trade in one of the few traditions we have left from our tribal roots for the sake of an American organization and the Dutch citizens reiterating their propoganda for cloud.
Especially considering the hypocrisy of it all: America uses elements of our tradition for commercial purposes, Father Christmas didn't even had an iconic look until Coca Cola created a Sinterklaas rip-off in the 50s. There are entire movies surrounding Christmas, merchandise, etc, etc. I thought the academic definition of cultural appropriation was a company making profit off of a culture's tradition without crediting them and giving them financial compensation. By the academic definition, companies all around the globe but America especially, have been guilty of appropriating Sinterklaas for many years, so many have made millions off of Sinterklaas' back but when they look at Sinterklaas and see something they don't like, that gigantic country bullies our small country they stole it from into compliance. It's sickening how America has gotten away with this behavior so far. I get we should change our look, but America doesn't gets to decide for us what it should look like. America doesn't gets to decide how a foreign cultures history and warpaint gets to look. Wilders holds some radical views, but he is the best man when it comes to putting his foot down and daring to stand against America, considering our previous leader kissed the feet of all important organizations for good PR and money. It's why we're still a tax paradise and arguable got even worse during his reign. Our previous leader was trying not to ruffle anyone's feathers as long as they held status. Our monarchy is another popular example. Whilst Wilders is the opposite. I really wonder how his reign will influence the conversation surrounding Sinterklaas, I really do. I just hope the protestors and the anti-protestors don't end up hurting or scaring some children around this time. Whilst I would love a look that actually goes back to celebrating our culture, their happiness and safety is the most important thing of all.

FILEMON WESSELINK VROUW SERIES
FILEMON WESSELINK VROUW TV
Eventually it crashes down on the sidewalk and bursts into a thousand pieces. The flowerpot doesn’t know which way to fall. It is said that later this saint became known as Santa Clause in America. Together with his colored friend Zwarte Piet, every year they make children happy with presents that are accompanied by small poems. Sinterklaas is a saint of uncertain origins that is celebrated in the Netherlands on the 5 th of December. ^ "Edith Bosch wint Expeditie Robinson" (in Dutch)."Veel gejuich om 'All Stars-editie' met winnaars Expeditie Robinson". ^ "Art Rooijakkers en Geraldine Kemper presenteren online versie Expeditie Robinson".^ "Nicolette en Zarayda nieuwe hosts Spuiten & Slikken" (in Japanese).^ "Geraldine wordt BNN's nieuwe Sterretje" (in Dutch).^ a b "Geraldine wint Sterretje Gezocht".^ a b "Sterretje meteen voor het blok".^ "Sterretje gezocht : Geraldine Kemper".^ a b "Geraldine uit Volendammer viswinkel nieuwste tv-sterretje".^ a b "RTL haalt Geraldine Kemper weg bij BnnVara".Kemper is the niece of singer Maribelle.De Nationale Reistest 2018 – BNNVARA – 2018.De Nationale 2017 Test – BNNVARA – 2017.Nu we er toch zijn op vakantie – BNN – 2011.Spuiten en Slikken – BNN – 2009–16 – did Experiments (Gerries First Time).Spuiten en Slikken Zomertour – BNN – 2009 – 1 episode.Onderweg naar Morgen – BNN – 2010 – as Monique (season 17).In the week before Christmas she was one of the sleeping guests in the Glass House of 3FM Serious Request. Kemper participated in Expeditie Robinson 2013, in which she played the final together with former judoka Edith Bosch and dancer Anna-Alicia Sklias.
FILEMON WESSELINK VROUW SERIES
In 2022, Kemper and Art Rooijakkers present the Expeditie Robinson: All Stars season of the television series Expeditie Robinson. In 2019, it was announced that Kemper would be moving to RTL, where she is going to be a presenter for Expeditie Robinson Videoland and The Voice of Holland On the internet platform of BNN 101 she presented Repo and Lekker Langzaam.įrom 2015, Kemper was seen with Jan Versteegh in the programme Jan vs Geraldine, an expansion on the BNN series "Versus".
FILEMON WESSELINK VROUW TV
Kemper has also been presenting Trick Mania on 101 TV since 2009. She attracted the Caribbean and a road trip through Europe. From 2014 she also takes on the general presentation, together with Tim Hofman. In Spuiten en Slikken she does the experiments, called Gerries Eerste Keer. Kemper, who therefore already replaced one episode for Groenhart, belonged from season 9 to the regular squad of Spuiten en Slikken. By the departure of Filemon Wesselink from Spuiten en Slikken, Nicolette Kluijver and Zarayda Groenhart were given Filemon's place and a place was released. Geraldine Kemper during shooting for Spuiten en Slikken (April 2014).Īt the last moment Kemper was allowed to make one episode of Spuiten en Slikken Zomertour as reporter. In 2011 she presented Try Before You Die 2. In the challenge she tackled challenges like: "participating in the tough guy challenge", "French kissing with an elderly man", "taking pictures in Volendam clothing" and "making the biggest crop circle". In 2009 she made her appearance in season 5 of Try Before You Die, in the company of Steyn de Leeuwe, Valerio Zeno, Filemon Wesselink, Nicolette Kluijver, Dennis Storm, Zarayda Groenhart and Sander Lantinga. In addition, Valerio Zeno announced during the final that the winner would immediately start the day after the finale as the presenter of Spuiten en Slikken Zomertour Geraldine replaced Zarayda Groenhart for one episode. That meant that she got a role in the soap opera Onderweg naar Morgen and became a presenter of Try Before You Die. She defeated Fleur in the final with 60% of the jury points and 60% of the votes of the audience. In the end Kemper managed to become the new star of BNN after eight weeks. Ī total of about eight thousand women registered. Her dream was therefore to become a VJ at TMF or a presenter at BNN. When Geraldine saw the call for the BNN programme Sterretje Gezocht, she immediately registered. That was also Kemper's reason for following her hbo studies in sports and marketing management. She studied sports management and had a part-time job with her uncle and aunt behind the counter of a fish shop in Almere. Kemper was born and grew up in Volendam and lives in Amsterdam.

◾️ zwarte piet is racisme // black pete is racist ◾️
where i'm from, Sinterklaas is celebrated today; a winter holiday like Christmas, but imagine instead of jolly elves giving you presents and bringing you joy, it's white people in blackface - Zwarte Piet, a racist caricature.
because of this, late november - early december is Hell for black people in the Netherlands and Belgium. you walk down the street seeing white people doing blackface minstrelsy, you grow up seeing tons of blackface imagery in stores or on TV, and the conversation on whether or not its racist is being dominated by complete disregard to the Dutch colonial & slavery history.
while changes are being made (slowly), the amount of gaslighting and racist violence black people and POC here have to endure is draining and traumatizing. "it's for the kids!" they say, but i've seen first hand how it has negatively impacted black kids in my family, making them question their place in society, myself included. black activists have campaigned against the tradition and those speaking out have been beaten and harassed by both the police and the far-right. and yes, this happens in a country that prides itself on being sooooo tolerant.
it should not take that much effort to change a "fun, family friendly holiday tradition for kids" in such a way that is inclusive for EVERYONE - in a way that remains fun and pleasant without harming others, especially marginalized folks.  today i wanted to speak up and use my platform in hopes to educate, spread awareness and advocate for change.
