Po is evil! Hate him!

I feel like people don't talk enough about how insane the ending of Kung Fu Panda is.

There's an almost-universal truism in kids' movies that the hero can't kill anyone. Not even the Big Bad, no matter how warranted it is in the moment or how much the audience wants it. You simply can't do that. Heroes don't kill.

There are exceptions, but this truism is especially universal in the studio that's practically synonymous with kids' films: Disney.

That's why so many Disney villains end up accidentally killing themselves. Usually by falling off of something:

I can only think of four heroes in the entire Disney catalog that deliberately, intentionally choose to kill a sapient, intelligent villain, and all of them were self-defensive and in the heat of the moment, where sparing the villain wasn't an option:

....and then Dreamworks came along, said "fuck that," and had their goofy, lovable Jack Black character ice a motherfucker just 'cause.

Po has already completely won the fight. The day has been saved. He has Tai Lung at his mercy. Tai Lung is terrified:

And Po's not even reluctant about it. There's no burden of responsibility. He doesn't even give his thoroughly beaten opponent a chance to surrender or be banished or something. They didn't just have Po kill, they had him enjoy it because his method of murder is so wicked cool.

Po is a hero in a kids' movie who not only kills his villain, but fucking executes him. All with that signature Dreamworks smirk on his face:

I have gazed into the abyss, and the abyss said "skadoosh."

Nonononono I just learned there will be a 4th Kung Fu Panda movie I'm so scared because the Kung Fu Panda trilogy is the only saga I have ever seen where each movie is genuinely good with a great story and full consistency no no noooo also the 3rd movie was ideal to finish with what are you doing Dreamworks?? don't ruin it I'm begging you

More like, Oogway used magic to manipulate events which prompted Shifu to practically disown his adoptive son and film deliberately added EVILUZ stuff in to make Tai Lung appear less sympathetic.

LIKE. the trilogy was a perfect structure. the first movie focused on a physical adversary, the second one a mental/emotional adversary, and the third one a spiritual adversary. each movie was another step in completing po's journey to becoming the most well rounded warrior AND person, which culminates in the third movie ending with him literally making contact with oogway again and finally achieving his status as oogway's successor. it was the perfect ending. what else, pray tell, is there for us to see with po's story. it's done. it's complete. he has no more major character development to undergo. he's grown and changed and gone through three separate arcs. there's nothing else to see. just let a story end gracefully without milking it for all it's worth, for the love of god

i knew they're still releasing tv shows and i think a new tv show actually just happened? or is still happening? but i don't care much for the tv shows because they're . Meh. especially the recent ones that don't seem to be focused po + the five which is like, the whole appeal of kfp, so what is the point. and the first show, legends of awesomeness, DID focus on po + the five, but it's like. Well it's very clearly a nickelodeon kids show from 2011

i've heard rumors about a fourth movie ever since 2016 but i haven't put stock in them because it's like. what's the point. the story wrapped up perfectly in a nice trilogy like what's the point in extending it. so i'm actually kind of nervous now to hear that it's real and happening apparently. like this trilogy is perfect... don't ruin it for me... screams

So I'm watching Kung-Fu Panda at 1:30 in the morning because sleep is for cowards and I made a small connection.

The relationship between Shifu and Tai Lung is somewhat parallel to Obi-Wan and Anakin. Both were trained hard their whole lives by a father-figure, being told and believing they were the Special One in a prophecy, were denied advancement from a higher ranking master, lashed out, became monsters, had a quick duel with their father figure who couldn't bear to kill them, lost horribly, put inside of a body cage, is feared by everyone that knows their name, and is eventually defeated by the real Special One.

Bit of a stretch but please keep following along.

What I find most interesting is when Shifu tells Tai Lung that him being denied and downfall wasn't his (Shifu's) fault. Which of course Tai Lung responds with

"Not. Your. FAULT?! Who filled my head with dreams?! Who drove me to train until my bones cracked?! Who denied me my DESTINY?!"

Which is a valid statement in all honesty. Because Shifu could have said something to try and convince Oogway otherwise. I doubt he would have succeeded but in Tai Lung's mind it was his beloved master not willing to stand-up for his pupil. Same thing happens with Obi-Wan. Yeah he talks about Anakin's successes but he almost never challenges the council when they put down Anakin, especially not after Anakin is not granted the rank of Jedi Master.

Another good moment I want to bring up is later in the confrontation between Shifu and Tai Lung.

"All I ever did, I did to make you proud! Tell me how proud you are, Shifu! Tell me! TELL ME!"

"I have always been proud of you. From the first moment, I've been proud of you. And it was my pride, that blinded me; I loved you too much to see what you were becoming... what I was turning you into. I'm... I'm sorry."

And this is such an important difference. Shifu is able to admit that he is responsible for turning a child prodigy into a monster. That his own ego and pride kept him from seeing the dangerous road he was making for his student. Even in the end Obi-Wan could never admit that he was at least partially responsible for Anakin's fall. During Return of the Jedi he still puts all the blame on Anakin and Anakin alone. He describes Anakin's turning to the dark side like young man was too weak to resist or jumped at the chance to obtain power quickly. Yoda is the same. They both put all the blame on Anakin and can't even fathom that Anakin didn't just fall but was also pushed by the Jedi order.

Yes there are many differences in these tales but the similarities are there and I find them interesting. Two different takes on what do you do when your disciple becomes the villain.

Yay sabía que no tenía que ser la única que le gustaba la ship de Tai lung x tigresa 👀 cuando ví la película por primera vez fue como uy aqui hay algo, era triste no encontrar mucho contenido siempre era tigresa x Po yo la verdad los veía como mejores amigos y ya xdd
