James Stanier氏の『Become an Effective Software Engineering Manager: How to Be the Leader Your Development Team Needs』です。 Welcome to another “Automate This!” In this live-streamed video series, we cover all things automation, from use cases and best practices to showcasing solutions built by #AwesomeAdmin Trailblazers like you. With automation, you can remove manual tasks, drive efficiency, and eliminate friction and redundancy. In this episode, three community Flow experts showcase their record-triggered flow design pattern. This blog post covers the record-triggered flow Tom Hoffman discussed during the episode. As the Salesforce world transitions to Flow-only automation, the question of the “best” approach has been raised frequently and with different answers. I believe the ideal design pattern for a flow is the one that best fits the needs of your architecture and requirements; however, when you’re getting started, I recommend the One Per (Object) design pattern as the first option. Beginning with a pattern familiar from Process Builder, the One Per design pattern builds on existing knowledge and allows you to transition to other design patterns if your requirements point you in that direction. A familiar pattern Let’s look at the common Trigger-Handler-Class pattern used in Apex design. A record created/updated/deleted causes a trigger to fire. This trigger has no business logic. Instead, it uses a trigger handler (an Apex class) to apply logic and send the record through any additional Apex classes. Thanks to Jigar Shah for the image! Now, look at the Process Builder below. It follows the same trigger (navy blue box), controlled delegation (Decision element with business logic), and logic & utility (Immediate Actions) as Apex. This is the foundation of the One Per design pattern. We apply the same Trigger-Handler-Class pattern from Apex and Process Builder within the framework of Flow, adhering closely to the rules that govern Apex and Process Builder—specifically, the concept of one trigger, per event & order, per object. Let’s make sure we have a common understanding of the words we’re using. These definitions should keep us aligned: Trigger: Conditions that start automation Event: A DML Operation, for our purposes, limited to create, update, and delete Order: Order of Execution (OoE), where Before Save triggers are #3 in the OoE and After Save triggers are #14 Object: A standard or custom object in Salesforce The One Per design pattern defined At the heart of the One Per design pattern is a simple statement: You should only have one flow, per event & order, per object. With Process Builder, it was possible to have a single process for each object, but the flexibility of flow triggers mean we have to expand the ‘one per’ mantra to capture some additional nuance. Flows have three triggering events (create, update, delete) AND two places in the OoE—Before Save (#3) and After Save (#14)—so our One Per design pattern states that we should only have one flow trigger per combination of these events & orders. Just like we’ve built with Process Builder, this one trigger per event/order will not have any entry criteria, utilize multiple Decision elements for business logic, and then have actions for each decision (see One Per in Action below for examples). Possible Flow Triggers in the One Per Design Pattern Possible Flow Triggers in the One Per Design Pattern  Event Order Entry Criteria  Create Before Save Never uses entry criteria Create After Save Never uses entry criteria Update Before Save Never uses entry criteria Update After Save Never uses entry criteria Delete Before Save Never uses entry criteria Delete After Save Never uses entry criteria Any Asynch Always uses entry criteria Any Scheduled Always uses entry criteria Autolaunched Screen Not Applicable  The One Per design pattern also uses a standardized naming convention. This allows for consistency with documentation, allows any user to visually understand the flow type and purpose, and allows us to create object automation list views that make navigation simple. One Per Design Pattern Flow Naming Conventions  Trigger Naming Conventions Event Order Naming Convention Notes Create Before Save Object - Trigger - Create Only - Before Create and update can be combined or kept separate. Create After Save Object - Trigger - Create Only - After Update Before Save Object - Trigger - Update - Before Update After Save Object - Trigger - Update - After Delete Before Save Object - Trigger - Delete - Before Delete After Save Object - Trigger - Delete - After Create/Update Before Save Object - Trigger - Create/Update - Before If combining Create/Update; should not have separate update only flow trigger. Create/Update After Save Object - Trigger - Create/Update - After Asynch, Scheduled, and Screen Naming Conventions Event Order & Type Naming Convention Notes Create Asynch - After Object - Asynch - Create - After - Insert Multiple Child Records There are other permutations of asych, scheduled, and screen flows; these are meant to highlight the Object - Type - Event - Order - Description naming pattern. Update Scheduled - After Object - Scheduled - Update - After - Update Related Child Records Autolaunched Screen Object - Screen - Button Launched - Set Payment Schedule Dates Class Naming Convention Object - Class - Create a New Task Object - Class - Send an Email Object - Class - Update Records One Per design pattern in action The One Per pattern takes on the same shape as Process Builder in Flow. Starting with our record trigger, we have no criteria as we’re using our Decision elements as trigger handlers.   Each Decision element holds the business logic and, based on that logic, routes to the appropriate actions before stopping OR continuing on to the next Decision element. You’ll notice that all of our actions are represented by Subflow and Action elements. With combining automation into this single record-triggered flow and the complexity of that automation, the screen would become quite challenging to read and understand. To support easy visibility and control, the One Per pattern only uses Subflow and Action elements in After Save flow triggers. For Before Save triggers, most actions are updates to the record triggering the automation and done using Assignment elements, so having your operations directly in the flow trigger is okay. After Save triggers tend to be more complex, and the subflow/action only layout creates a clean, simple-to-follow flow trigger. In addition to the simplified layout, moving actions to subflows allows them to be componentized and reused. See the example where based on the Decision – Sharing is Caring, we call the same subflow three different times (providing different inputs). The same flow class can be constructed and called from various places based on Decision elements to tightly control your OoE, reduce the number of active flows in your org, and ultimately make your org easier to maintain. Our foundational pattern is used for Before Save automation, but instead of calling subflows or actions, we use assignments to update values on the record that triggered the flow. We still have no criteria in our trigger and nothing is structurally different, just the type of Action element to the right of our flow trigger ‘handlers’ will typically be assignments. The other flow example is of an asynchronous flow in the One Per model. Because asynchronous flows require conditions in the logic (same with scheduled paths), they are purpose built, named accordingly, and have all actions directly on the layout; there’s less of a need for the subflow pattern. Why One Per? As you’ve noticed, the views on the best flow design pattern vary greatly. While none are wrong, I do believe that the One Per design pattern is the best starting point for the following reasons. Builds on existing knowledge The foundation of the One Per model follows the Trigger-Handler-Class pattern familiar to those with experience in Workflow Rules, Process Builder, and Apex. It allows an easy migration from Process Builder since most orgs follow the One Per model. Where there is a clear delineation, like an entirely new business unit that has completely different record types and processes for their Sales team, it could make sense to split the automation into two groups of flows. However, the rule of having as few triggers as possible per object/event should always apply. In this case, starting from the One Per design pattern, you can clone your existing flow and add/remove elements as needed to start the foundation of your new flow group. Moving the other direction (many flows to consolidated) is more challenging than going in the opposite direction, which is a key reason I recommend to start One Per until it no longer meets your needs’ approach. Provides simplified visualizations Looking at the examples above for Before and After Save triggers, a user can read down through the decisions and subflows/actions and from one screen have an understanding of the OoE, what is happening at each subflow/action, and the associated automation in general. With multiple flows, while the Flow Trigger Explorer is a wonderful tool, it has limited real estate. Plus, you’ll need to click into each flow separately to see what it’s doing and then also see the details of the flow, any subflows, and actions. Imagine what our After Save example would look like as four separate flows. How much longer would it take you to get an understanding of the Account After Save automation versus this view? This is another strength of the One Per design pattern and why, until requirements dictate otherwise, it’s an ideal starting place. Offers advanced control for Order of Execution Spring ’22 brought the Trigger Order value to the Flow Trigger Explorer, which is a pretty sweet feature to have available. Flow Trigger Explorer only works linearly though, from trigger A to trigger B according to the trigger order. In the One Per design pattern, based on record values or paths already taken, we have the ability to skip Decision elements and repeat Decision elements, providing an enhanced level of control over the OoE not available with one flow/per start criteria approach. We still have the full advantage of using Flow Trigger Explorer for moving our asynchronous and scheduled flows into the order we would like before or after our primary record-triggered flow. Creates consistency The naming standards for the One Per design pattern brings the language of declarative automation inline with that of our developer peers. This common usage of terms and patterns allows teams to collaborate better and can foster a better conversation around design from both directions. The approach means flows are all built according to the same standard and method, reducing the effort for documentation, training, and maintenance. Speaking of maintenance, you can debug from a single Before & After Save flow trigger in the One Per model, making testing and fixing updates involve less steps, screens, and time than other approaches. Enhances performance Luke Freeland is a thought leader for Salesforce benchmarking and has done a series of Flow benchmarks and write-ups since 2020 on this topic. In all of his testing, the single flow with multiple Decision elements outperformed the multiple flows with as much as a 3:1 margin. Two of his results are shown below: In the first, we see that the Ordered Start (Flow Trigger Explorer) multiple flow approach is about 15% faster in his tests; however, the efficiency gain in this sample size and methodology is minimal compared to the gain from multiple flows to single flows in his earlier benchmarking exercises.

Whether to buy CRM stock often boils down to how an investor views two fundamental trends. One is rising corporate spending on digital transformation projects. And two is Salesforce.com's (CRM) penchant for making big acquisitions, such as its purchase of Slack Technologies, a maker of workplace collaboration software. X 0 seconds of 0 secondsVolume 0% One issue for Salesforce stock is how software growth stocks are doing generally. Software stocks have lagged the S&P 500 amid a bear market. A closely watched software benchmark, the iShares Expanded Tech-Software ETF (IGV), is down 23% in 2022. The S&P 500 is down 13.6%. The good news: the iShares Expanded Tech-Software ETF (IGV) climbed 7.8% in July, turning positive for the first time since March. Amid volatility in the Nasdaq, Salesforce stock has retreated 25% this year. Evercore ISI analyst Kirk Materne is upbeat. "While enterprise IT spend is not impervious to a sharp recession, Salesforce's position with its customer base is stronger vs. prior cycles, and as such, customer demand remains steady despite the growing macro nervousness," he said in a report. "Further, we continue to believe that CRM's focus on delivering consistent operating margin expansion is a company-wide initiative and this represents a material catalyst for the shares when taking a 6 to 12 month view." Salesforce reported April-quarter earnings that fell from a year earlier but topped Wall Street targets. Revenue also beat analyst estimates. The enterprise software maker has dropped the ".com" from its legal name. The name change from Salesforce.com to Salesforce Inc. took effect April 4. The company continues to trade as CRM stock. In addition, Salesforce has slowed hiring as it looks to curb expenses. Salesforce Stock: Co-CEO Structure Returns Salesforce promoted Bret Taylor to act as co-chief executive alongside current CEO Marc Benioff late last year. Taylor had served as Salesforce's president and chief operating officer since 2019. Before that, he was chief product officer. Twitter (TWTR) named Taylor its new chairman on Nov. 29. Salesforce had a co-CEO structure earlier. But Keith Block, viewed as a possible successor to Benioff, stepped down as co-CEO in early 2020. CRM stock sells software under a subscription model. Its software helps businesses organize and handle sales operations and customer relationships. The company has expanded into marketing, e-commerce and data analytics. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, demand for next-generation collaboration and productivity tools has increased. In addition, many companies aim to automate operations and track key business metrics in order to support employees working from home. One view is that spending on digital transformation projects will continue to be strong as the Covid-19 emergency eases. Such projects turn paperwork into electronic records and automate business workflows. More companies are investing in business analytics/artificial intelligence tools that scrub customer data. In addition, CRM stock could get a lift from U.S. federal information technology spending. The company recently unveiled "no-code" programming tools for the public sector. Further, Salesforce has stepped up investments in low code app development. At an investor day in December 2020, Salesforce said it aims to double revenue to $50 billion by 2026, including a $4 billion contribution from Slack. At the same time, Salesforce stock lowered its organic revenue growth target to 19% from 20% over the next four years. Salesforce Stock Joins Dow Jones Industrial Average CRM stock in 2020 was added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Further, it replaced Exxon Mobil (XOM) in the 30-stock benchmark. Meanwhile, CRM stock recently was added to the IBD Long Term Leaders list. Also, the bar keeps rising when investors look at Salesforce's "biggest acquisition ever." Its purchase of Exact Target in 2013 was followed by e-commerce platform Demandware in 2016, and MuleSoft in 2018. Last year, Salesforce ponied up $15.7 billion in an all-stock deal to buy data analytics firm Tableau Software. Then came the Slack deal, which closed in July. Amid growing competition with Microsoft (MSFT), Salesforce agreed to pay $27.7 billion for workplace collaboration software maker. The upbeat view is that acquisitions have enabled Salesforce to expand from its roots in customer relationship management software into marketing, e-commerce and other markets. Salesforce is one of many big-cap tech stocks to watch. Started in 1999, Salesforce went public in 2004. Benioff, who is also Salesforce's founder, worked at Oracle for 13 years before he left to start the software company. CRM Stock: Core Business Strength An Issue Microsoft's Dynamics has gained traction as a lower-priced alternative to Salesforce tools, some analysts say. In addition, Microsoft is putting more salespeople behind the Dynamics business. Also, Salesforce has been a fierce rival of Oracle (ORCL). Competition with Adobe Systems (ADBE), the digital media and marketing software firm, has been rising. Newer rivals include Zendesk (ZEN) and HubSpot (HUBS). And Twilio (TWLO) has jumped into customer relationship management software with an acquisition. The customers of software-as-a-service, or SaaS, companies like Salesforce purchase renewable subscriptions, rather than one-time software licenses. Customers receive automatic software updates via the web. Also, the company spends about 14% of revenue on research and development, relatively high for a software company. Increased hiring and wage inflation for software engineers also have been a headwind to margin growth. Salesforce Stock: Fundamental Analysis In the first quarter, Salesforce earnings fell 19% to 98 cents on an adjusted basis while revenue climbed 24% to $7.41 billion. CRM stock analysts expected Salesforce to report earnings of 94 cents a share on sales of $7.38 billion. CRPO bookings rose 24% to $21.5 billion, in line with estimates. For the current quarter ending in July, the company forecast earnings per share in a range of $1.01 to $1.02, vs. estimates of $1.14 a share for CRM stock. Also, the software maker expects revenue of $7.695 billion at the midpoint of guidance, vs. estimates of $7.77 billion. Salesforce Builds Artificial Intelligence Platform One technology that Salesforce hopes will drive more revenue is artificial intelligence. The enterprise software maker introduced its "Einstein" AI software cloud platform in September 2016. The first Einstein AI software tools helped salespeople predict which deals are most likely to close based on a company's historical lead and account data. In addition, Salesforce has integrated AI tools into other enterprise software offerings over the past three years, targeting industries such as financial services in digital transformation. Einstein AI primarily works via chat bots. On its first quarter earnings call,  Salesforce said its customers were generating more than 164 billion Einstein predictions per day, up from 100 billion a year earlier. But Salesforce has yet to disclose financial metrics on how much revenue the Einstein AI platform generates, directly or indirectly. Salesforce in 2019 agreed to buy data analytics firm Tableau for $15.7 billion in an all-stock deal. Tableau provides data visualization software. In addition, it enables customers to build databases, graphs and maps using time series analytics, a technique that analyzes a series of data points ordered in time. Also, Salesforce expects synergy between its Einstein artificial intelligence tools and Tableau's business intelligence software. In 2021, Salesforce announced that it would rebrand Einstein Analytics as Tableau CRM. CRM Stock: Recent Acquisitions In 2018, Salesforce bought MuleSoft for $6.5 billion in cash and stock. MuleSoft's software automates the integration of new tools with legacy enterprise platforms and speeds application development. MuleSoft's business hit a bump in late 2021. Meanwhile, Salesforce spent $4.6 billion on acquisitions in 2016. They included e-commerce platform Demandware. E-commerce has boomed amid the coronavirus pandemic. The shift to online shopping has provided a lift to Salesforce's "Commerce Cloud," which has its roots in the Demandware purchase. Furthermore, Salesforce's $2.5 billion purchase of Exact Target in 2013 jump-started its move into marketing software. Bullish analysts say Salesforce AI's tools, plus Tableau and MuleSoft will make a powerful combination for digital transformation projects. Further, Salesforce aims to partner with IT services firms such as Accenture (ACN) to add customers. Despite U.S.-China trade tensions, Salesforce has added Alibaba Group (BABA) as a sales channel partner in China. Is Salesforce Stock A Buy? In cloud computing, Salesforce has partnered with Google for data analytics. In addition, Salesforce has expanded its venture capital investing. After forming a long cup base from September 2020 to September 2021, Salesforce stock hit an all-time high of 311.75 on Nov. 9. The stock pulled back in late 2021 as the software sector weakened. According to IBD Stock Checkup, CRM stock currently has a Relative Strength Rating of 41 out of a best-possible 99. The best stocks tend to have ratings of 80 and above. CRM stock holds an IBD Composite Rating of 62 out of a best possible 99. IBD's Composite Rating combines five separate proprietary ratings into one easy-to-use rating. The best growth stocks have a Composite Rating of 90 or better. In addition, CRM stock has an Accumulation/Distribution Rating of B. The rating analyzes price and volume changes in a stock over the past 13 weeks of trading. The rating, on an A+ to E scale, measures institutional buying and selling in a stock. A+ signifies heavy institutional buying; E means heavy selling. Think of the C grade as neutral. As of the market open on Aug. 8, CRM stock trades holds no valid entry point.  Salesforce stock needs to form a new base to be actionable. JavaScript is cool (don't @ me), but how can a machine actually understand the code you've written? As JavaScript devs, we usually don't have to deal with compilers ourselves. However, it's definitely good to know the basics of the JavaScript engine and see how it handles our human-friendly JS code, and turns it into something machines understand! 🥳 | Note: This post is mainly based on the V8 engine used by Node.js and Chromium-based browsers. The HTML parser encounters a script tag with a source. Code from this source gets loaded from either the network, cache, or an installed service worker. The response is the requested script as a stream of bytes, which the byte stream decoder takes care of! The byte stream decoder decodes the stream of bytes as it’s being downloaded. The byte stream decoder creates tokens from the decoded stream of bytes. For example, 0066 decodes to f, 0075 to u, 006e to n, 0063 to c, 0074 to t, 0069 to i, 006f to o, and 006e to n followed by a white space. Seems like you wrote function! This is a reserved keyword in JavaScript, a token gets created, and sent to the parser (and pre-parser, which I didn't cover in the gifs but will explain later). The same happens for the rest of the byte stream. The engine uses two parsers: the pre-parser, and the parser. In order to reduce the time it takes to load up a website, the engine tries to avoid parsing code that's not necessary right away. The preparser handles code that may be used later on, while the parser handles the code that’s needed immediately! If a certain function will only get invoked after a user clicks a button, it's not necessary that this code is compiled immediately just to load up a website. If the user eventually ends up clicking the button and requiring that piece of code, it gets sent to the parser. The parser creates nodes based on the tokens it receives from the byte stream decoder. With these nodes, it creates an Abstract Syntax Tree, or AST. 🌳 Next, it's time for the interpreter! The interpreter which walks through the AST, and generates byte code based on the information that the AST contains. Once the byte code has been generated fully, the AST is deleted, clearing up memory space. Finally, we have something that a machine can work with! 🎉 Although byte code is fast, it can be faster. As this bytecode runs, information is being generated. It can detect whether certain behavior happens often, and the types of the data that’s been used. Maybe you've been invoking a function dozens of times: it's time to optimize this so it'll run even faster! 🏃🏽‍♀️ The byte code, together with the generated type feedback, is sent to an optimizing compiler. The optimizing compiler takes the byte code and type feedback, and generates highly optimized machine code from these. 🚀 JavaScript is a dynamically typed language, meaning that the types of data can change constantly. It would be extremely slow if the JavaScript engine had to check each time which data type a certain value has. In order to reduce the time it takes to interpret the code, optimized machine code only handles the cases the engine has seen before while running the bytecode. If we repeatedly used a certain piece of code that returned the same data type over and over, the optimized machine code can simply be re-used in order to speed things up. However, since JavaScript is dynamically typed, it can happen that the same piece of code suddenly returns a different type of data. If that happens, the machine code gets de-optimized, and the engine falls back to interpreting the generated byte code. Say a certain function is invoked a 100 times and has always returned the same value so far. It will assume that it will also return this value the 101st time you invoke it. Let’s say that we have the following function sum, that’s (so far) always been called with numerical values as arguments each time: This returns the number 3! The next time we invoke it, it will assume that we’re invoking it again with two numerical values. If that’s true, no dynamic lookup is required, and it can just re-use the optimized machine code. Else, if the assumption was incorrect, it will revert back to the original byte code instead of the optimized machine code. For example, the next time we invoke it, we pass a string instead of a number. Since JavaScript is dynamically typed, we can do this without any errors! This means that the number 2 will get coerced into a string, and the function will return the string "12" instead. It goes back to executing the interpreted bytecode and updates the type feedback. I hope this post was useful to you! 😊 Of course, there are many parts to the engine that I haven't covered in this post (JS heap, call stack, etc.) which I might cover later! I definitely encourage you to start to doing some research yourself if you're interested in the internals of JavaScript, V8 is open source and has some great documentation on how it works under the hood! 🤖 V8 Docs || V8 Github || Chrome University 2018: Life Of A Script Feel free to reach out to me! Exploitation(脆弱性の悪用実績やPoCの公開状況がどの程度か) Exposure(システムの公開度合いはどの程度か) Utility(脆弱性の有用性=悪用によって得られる対価 * 悪用(自動化)のしやすさ) Well-being and Mission Impact(悪用された時のインパクト) Deployerの判断木を見てみましょう(最新の資料ではPDF35ページ目)。 要するに、「Exploitationは?」「Exposureは?」「Utilityは?」「Human-being and misson impactは?」 Supplier(パッチを作る人、メーカー) Deployer(パッチを当てる人、利用者) Coodinator(…… Exploitation、Utility、Well-being and Mission Impactを何に基づいて決めるかを決めなければなりません。 Utility Utilityは Automatable(自動化できるか)とValue Density(得られる対価)で決まります。 Well-being and Mission Impact CVSSのCIAがよさそうだと思っています。

👋 Hey, Im Lenny and welcome to a 🔒 subscriber-only edition 🔒 of my weekly newsletter. Each week I tackle reader questions about product, growth, working with humans, and anything else that’s stressing you out about work. Send me your questions and in return I’ll humbly offer actionable real-talk advice. Welcome to part five (omg almost the end!) of our six-part series on kickstarting and scaling a consumer business. If you’re just joining us, here’s where we’re at: By this point, you have a startup idea, a product, some early users, and you’re on a quest to find that elusive product-market fit. For this post, I researched the PMF journeys of dozens of today’s most successful consumer products and will help you understand: How do you know when you’ve found product-market fit? How long does it normally take to find product-market fit? How do you iterate toward product-market fit? What actually is product-market fit? Per usual, this post includes new concepts I’ve never before shared, a bunch of brand-new stories that I’ve gathered directly from founders, and few new frameworks. Again, a disclaimer: following these steps (or any steps) will not guarantee you success. But I am confident that it will significantly increase your odds. Big thank-you to Alyssa Ravasio (Hipcamp), Amir Nathoo (Outschool), Cem Kansu (Duolingo), Chris Best (Substack), Drew Houston (Dropbox), Evan Goldin (Lyft), Gagan Biyani (Udemy), Jonathan Badeen (Tinder), Kevin Systrom (Instagram), Kevin Tan (Snackpass), Marc Randolph (Netflix), Max Mullen (Instacart), Mike Evans (Grubhub), Rahul Vohra (Superhuman), Ryan Graves (Uber), Ryan Hoover (Product Hunt), Samuel Yam (Patreon), Sander Daniels (Thumbtack), Sarah Leary (Nextdoor), Steve Chen (YouTube), and Tommy Leep for contributing to this post, to Natalie for illustrations, and to Alex Ross (Greg app) and Hayley Barna (First Round Capital) for inspiring the PMF archetypes 🙏 Let’s get into it. Building something people want, and making money doing it at scale, is extraordinarily hard. Ninety percent of all startups fail, 75% of venture-backed startups don’t return cash to their investors, and the vast majority of startups run out of money before finding product-market fit. “If failure is defined as failing to see the projected return on investment—say, a specific revenue growth rate or date to break even on cash flow—then more than 95% of start-ups fail.”I’m opening with these dire stats because (1) I want to discourage people who are scared by this from starting a company and, (2) if you can’t not start a company, to help you stay laser-focused on finding product-market fit. As venture capitalist Marc Andreessen put it: “Do whatever is required to get to product-market fit. Including changing out people, rewriting your product, moving into a different market, telling customers no when you don’t want to, telling customers yes when you don’t want to, raising that fourth round of highly dilutive venture capital—whatever is required. When you get right down to it, you can ignore almost everything else.”Below are four tell-tale signs that your product has product-market fit. However, it’s helpful to think of PMF not as a binary “you have it” and “you don’t have it” one-way-door kind of point, and instead as a spectrum of confidence that changes over time. On one end of the spectrum, you are 100% confident you have PMF. On the other, you definitely do not. The more signs of PMF you see, and the more intense each sign, the more confidence you should have that you’ve found, and still have, product-market fit. Here are the four clearest signs, in decreasing levels of confidence, that you have product-market fit: There’s no better way to tell that people want your product than by people’s revealed preferences: using, and continuing to use, your product. In other words, retention. There are a few ways to look at retention, but the most informative is to look at what’s called cohort-based retention: the percentage of users who continue to use your product x months/weeks/days later. You measure cohort retention by bucketing all the users who joined during a certain month/week/day (that’s your cohort) and looking at how many in this group are still active x months/weeks/days later. For example, if 100 users joined in January, and only 25 are still active in July, your six-month cohort retention is 25%. You can track this data either as a table: In this case, only 14% of users who joined the week of May 5 are still active 10 weeks later. Not good.Or as a curve, which is often more interesting: If this curve flattens above 0%, that means there is some part of the market that wants your product. Good work. However, to build a durable business, you’ll need this curve to flatten a lot higher. Based on my research, here’s what is considered good and great user retention at six months: Consumer social (e.g. Snap): ~25% is good, ~45% is great Consumer transactional (e.g. Airbnb): ~30% is good, ~50% is great Consumer subscription (e.g. Duolingo): ~40% is good, ~70% is great Read more about this here. And to measure cohort-based retention, you can use popular analytics tools like Amplitude, Mixpanel, Google Analytics, Mode, or you can find some plug-and-play templates here, here, or here. Note, it’s OK if your retention is lower than these benchmarks if: You have low CAC and marginal costs You’re not building a venture-scale business You’re just starting out Read more here. Broadly, as Casey Winters wisely put it: “You have product-market fit when your retention creates enough money (or content/virality) to drive sustainable acquisition.”We’ll talk more about sustainable acquisition below. If you’re finding your retention metrics well below this, or don’t have enough data yet to know, keep reading. Many of the smartest consumer minds out there consider exponential organic growth the sign you’ve hit PMF: “For consumer apps, you have PMF when you start to experience exponential organic growth, driven by word of mouth. People can buy growth and they do it all the time, and I’m always amazed that people fall for it and that they kid themselves into thinking they have product-market fit because they bought it. The only way to know is if that you have product-market fit is if you get word of mouth. The best test of word of mouth is exponential organic growth because the only way you can get exponential organic growth is through word of mouth.”—Andy Rachleff, founder of Benchmark and Wealthfront“You can always feel product-market fit when it’s happening. The customers are buying the product just as fast as you can make it—or usage is growing just as fast as you can add more servers. Money from customers is piling up in your company checking account. You’re hiring sales and customer support staff as fast as you can. Reporters are calling because they’ve heard about your hot new thing and they want to talk to you about it. You start getting entrepreneur of the year awards from Harvard Business School. Investment bankers are staking out your house.”“The only way you know if you’ve built what customers want is because they are using it in an explosive and destructive way. If you are not getting explosive usage, you are not building what customers want, or there aren’t that many customers, which means you don’t have a big business.”“I think the right initial metric is ‘Do any users love our product so much they spontaneously tell other people to use it?’ “— Sam Altman, ex-head of Y Combinator“Are people grabbing the product out of your hands saying: I want it, or I’m using it, or I’m buying it, or I’m downloading it, or I’m giving you my email address?”—Steve Blank, creator of the lean startup movement“Pushing a boulder: don’t have product-market fit. Chasing a boulder: have product-market fit. Both are very demanding but feel totally different. If you’re still pushing the boulder, you don’t have it yet.”—Emmett Shear, CEO of Twitch, partner at Y Combinator“Organic growth is the key indicator of product/market fit. People love to seem smart and cool. They want to recommend something great to their friends. They don’t need a share button to do it. If they love your product, they will tell people about it. Ideally more than 50% of your new accounts come from direct or organic traffic.” —Merci Grace, ex-Head of Growth at SlackTo make this even more real, here’s what the founders of some of today’s biggest consumer companies shared when I asked them what product-market fit felt like: “For me there was a visceral sense of your thing taking on a life of its own and lurching forward, like getting pressed into the back of your seat by a fast car or a plane taking off. The most standout moment for me was our demo video hitting the top of Digg (and then Reddit).” —Drew Houston, CEO and co-founder

Google CEO Sundar Pichai speaks on stage during the annual Google I/O developers conference in Mountain View, California, May 8, 2018. Stephen Lam | Reuters Google is launching a new effort called "Simplicity Sprint" in an effort to improve efficiency and improve employee focus during an uncertain economic environment. The Alphabet company had its regular all-hands meeting last Wednesday, and the tone was somewhat urgent as employees expressed concern over layoffs and CEO Sundar Pichai asked employees for input, according to attendees and related internal documentation viewed by CNBC. Google’s productivity as a company isn’t where it needs to be even with the head count it has, Pichai told employees in the meeting. “I wanted to give some additional context following our earnings results, and ask for your help as well,” Pichai opened, referring to the company's second-quarter earnings report Tuesday. "It’s clear we are facing a challenging macro environment with more uncertainty ahead." He added, "There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not where it needs to be for the head count we have." He asked employees to help "create a culture that is more mission-focused, more focused on our products, more customer focused. We should think about how we can minimize distractions and really raise the bar on both product excellence and productivity.” It comes after the company on Tuesday reported its second consecutive quarter of weaker-than-expected earnings and revenue. Revenue growth slowed to 13% in the quarter from 62% a year earlier, when the company was benefiting from the post-Covid pandemic reopening and consumer spending was on the rise. CFO Ruth Porat said she expected some of the challenges to continue in the near term but the company doesn't give formal guidance. It also comes after Pichai recently announced that it would slow the pace of hiring and investments through 2023, asking employees to work “with greater urgency” and “more hunger” than shown “on sunnier days." ‘Simplicity Sprint’“I would love to get all your help,” Pichai said at Wednesday's all-hands meeting, speaking to its more than 170,000 full-time employees. To that end, Pichai introduced a "Simplicity Sprint" initiative to crowdsource ideas for quicker product development. "Sprint" is a term often used in software development and by tech startups to denote short, focused pushes toward a common goal. Pichai said the company is opening the floor for employees to share their ideas through Aug. 15 through an internal survey that asks if management can reach out if they have follow-up questions. Stock picks and investing trends from CNBC Pro:It’s an attempt for the company to “get better results faster," Pichai said during the meeting. The survey, which was viewed by CNBC, shows it may also be used to cut back in certain areas. Questions in the survey include “What would help you work with greater clarity and efficiency to serve our users and customers? Where should we remove speed bumps to get to better results faster? How do we eliminate waste and stay entrepreneurial and focused as we grow?” The request also comes as the company tries to ease tensions between employees and executives after an annual “Googlegeist” survey showed staffers gave the company particularly poor marks on pay, promotions and execution. Highlighting a 7% dip in views about Google’s execution, executive Prabhakar Raghavan at the time wrote “that means we need to bring more attention to busting bureaucracy." Raghavan is among the most important and influential execs at the company, overseeing search, ads, mapping and other areas. In May, the company announced it would overhaul its performance evaluation process that will result in increased salaries while hoping to reduce the bureaucracy around compensation and raises. ‘Some anxiety’In Wednesday's all-hands meeting, executives addressed employees' concern about potential layoffs. One of the top-rated questions was “In light of Sundar’s statement that sharpening Google’s focus ‘means consolidating where investments overlap and streamlining processes,’ should we expect layoffs?” Pichai handed the question off to Google’s chief people officer, Fiona Cicconi. While Cicconi said the company is still hiring and doesn't have plans for layoffs right now, she didn’t rule it out. “We’re asking teams to be more focused and efficient and we’re working out what that means as a company as well. Even though we can’t be sure of the economy in the future, we're not currently looking to reduce Google's overall workforce." She also said, “I really get that there is some anxiety around this based on what we’re hearing from other companies and what they’re doing and as Sundar mentioned, we’re still hiring for critical roles,” Cicconi said. She asked employees to remember that it’s still the biggest hiring year in the company’s history. In the second quarter, Alphabet said its head count rose 21% to 174,014 full-time employees from 144,056 the year prior. However, the company said last month it will slow the pace of hiring and investments through 2023, and Pichai told employees in a memo, "we're not immune to economic headwinds." Pichai noted the broader economic headwinds multiple times. “If you’re looking to what's happening externally — I’m sure you’re all reading the news— the people in businesses who use Google products are facing their own challenges right now.”
