Working on the last part of Well Earned! I'm struggling with a late-middle and unsure about the beginning, but I'm very happy with the early middle and what I'm working on for the end. 😄
Cassian smiled to himself, trying to ignore the fluttering in his stomach. "Imagine what I could do when not hungover."
"Oh, gods. Don't tease me with that, I might never let you leave."
Cassian felt his entire body stiffen at the comment, his mind drowning in the thoughts that comment brought up, something lower twitching as too much blood pumped through it. He watched as Nesta stiffened as well, her eyes widening as she realized what she said.
Don't say it. Don't say it. Don't s-
"I probably wouldn't want to."
Cassian scrunched his face at his own words. He really couldn't stop himself from walking into dangerous territory when it came to Nesta. As if he was begging her to hurt him again.

Oh goodness. 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
I can just see Aelin writing a review for this thing: "10/10. My neighbor fucked me so hard because of this thing, and then with this thing. Hands down best purchase of my life cause now we're dating, and I can attribute it all to this vibrator." 😂😂
Misplaced Mail - Part 3
Aelin Galathynius x Rowan Whitethorn

Aelin woke up feeling comfortable and warm. Blinking her eyes open, the first thing she saw was the relaxed, sleeping face of Rowan Whitethorn.
The events of the previous night came flashing back. The package mix-up. The vibrator. Rowan. Rowan.
Aelin couldn’t help the giddy laugh that escaped her lips. She liked this—waking up in Rowan’s arms. Especially knowing that it was more than just sex. Not she would complain about just sex with the gorgeous man next to her, because, gods, was it damn good sex. But it was more.
They were going on a date today. And hopefully that meant she’d be able to wake up like this regularly.
“I can feel you staring.” He mumbled; his accent more pronounced in his sleepy state. But he tightened his hold on her and pulled her closer to him.
“I wasn’t staring,” she lied, and he cracked an eye open and raised a brow.
His nose nuzzled in her hair. “It’s okay. I know I’m hard to resist.”
Aelin snorted, carding her fingers through his hair and playing with the strands at the base of his neck. “You’re right. I was wondering how your neck held up your overinflated head.”
His chuckle was low and throaty. She hummed into his skin and pulled his face back from her neck. When he raised a brow at her she simply leaned forward and kissed him.
Aelin could feel the curve of his lips as he smiled into it, her own surely doing the same. It was slow—lazy—as they took their time and savored the quiet morning.
Their languid kisses and explorative touches eventually turned more heated and purposeful. Rowan hitched one of her legs over his hip and she could feel the hard press of him between her thighs as she moved her body against his.
He rolled, pushing her down on her back as he hovered over her and settled into the cradle of her hips. She ran her fingers down his back, savoring the way the hard muscles moved as he continued to kiss her.
He pulled away, and if Aelin hadn’t already been breathless, the dark heat in Rowan’s eyes would’ve taken the last of her breath away.
Rowan’s mouth trailed down her neck, her collar bones, down the valley of her breasts. He sucked a small bruise to the sensitive skin on the underside of one of her breasts that left her whimpering before capturing her peaked nipple between his lips.
Her hands clutched at his back and dove into his hair as he gave her other breast the same treatment.
When she was panting and grinding her hips on him, he finally continued his trail down her stomach, then lower. He’s shuffled to the edge of the bed, climbing down so he could kneel on the floor.
“I didn’t get to do this yesterday,” he explained, gripping her ankles and pulling her towards him with a gasp. “That brief taste of you I got nearly drove me insane.” He spread her legs as she moaned at the memory of him sucking on the fingers he had had inside of her.
The sight of Rowan kneeling between her legs as his hands coasted up her thighs, pulling them apart to give him an unrestricted view of her throbbing core, sent another rush of arousal surging through her.
His eyes didn’t stray from her wet, needy center as he leaned forward, getting so close she could feel his breath against her heat. When she whined at the sensation, Rowan’s eyes flicked up and locked on hers. He held her gaze as his hands firmly gripped her legs and his tongue came out to lick at her clit.
“Oh,” She gasped, her hips instinctively jerking, but Rowan held her down. It was like that first taste unleashed him and then his mouth was attached to her soaking core. His tongue licked tight circles then flat, broad strokes, alternating so she felt something new at every minuscule shift.
When he took her clit between his lips and sucked, her hand flew to his hair and gripped the silver strands hard. “Yes, yes, yes. Right there, fuck, right there.”
Rowan took one of her legs and tossed it over his shoulder. His eyes lifted to hers and he had the audacity to wink before one of his fingers was pressing into her. Aelin tossed her head back, her spine arching off the bed as he added a second finger while continuing his perfect ministrations on her clit.
His fingers picked up speed as they thrust into her and her gasps were accented by high-pitched whines. “You taste so fucking good, baby.”
The hand in his hair tightened so hard she was sure it was painful, but she couldn’t care as Rowan groaned against her and the vibrations of his mouth sent her tumbling over the edge.
Her back bowed, her free hand gripping her sheets as he slowed his movements, dragging her through every last dreg of pleasure she could muster.
Her chest heaving, Aelin pushed herself up and pulled Rowan down on top of her. She could taste herself on his lips and she hungrily wrapped both arms around his neck. She gasped as his hard length brushed against her sensitive clit.
Moving one arm, she reached down towards him, having every intention of flipping their positions around so she could show him the same pleasure he’d made her feel.
But then, almost in unison, their stomachs grumbled. Loudly.
Breaking apart, she and Rowan looked at each other wide-eyed for a moment before they burst out laughing. He rolled over to lie next to her, another surge of laughter bursting out as they caught the other’s eye.
Rowan propped himself up on one elbow and looked down at Aelin sprawled on the bed. “What do you say we go for that coffee now? And turn it into a breakfast?”
She lifted a brow and looked pointedly down at his straining hard-on. “You sure about that?”
He opened his mouth and Aelin half wanted him to say no and that they could stay in bed. But his stomach rumbled again, and she was reminded of the incessant hunger in her, too.
He sighed, looking down at himself but nodded.
Aelin beamed up at him and shifted so she could lean up and capture his lips in a sift kiss. Much tamer than the one they’d shared a minute ago.
“Then I’d say that’s a fantastic idea.” She sat up and stretched her arms overhead.
Rowan had to blink a few times, dragging his eyes away from the way her stretch lifted her breasts. Clearing his throat once he caught her amused quirked brow, he stood. “I’m going to hop in a quick shower, but let’s say fifteen minutes?”
Aelin nodded, humming in agreement as he picked up his clothes from yesterday, slipped his pants on, and walked out of her room. She threw on a robe and followed him out. When they got to her door, he opened it but paused on the threshold.
He looked unsure of himself so Aelin leaned forward and kissed him, immediately opening for him as one of his hands wove into her hair. They broke apart a few sounds later, eyes alight.
“Fifteen minutes,” she confirmed, stepping into her living room.
Rowan grinned, nodded, and walked back towards his door. She waited until he’d opened it and smiled as he glanced back at her. With one last flirtatious wave, she turned around and took the fastest shower of her life.
Exactly fifteen minutes later, Rowan knocked on her door and offered her fresh flowers—where he got them or how he had the time to do so, she had no idea.
***
The door of Aelin’s apartment swung open and hit the wall behind it with a thud. She and Rowan stumbled through, their hands moving over every inch of the other’s body they could touch.
She gasped in a breath, breaking their heated kiss so she could close and lock the door. Not one for missing an opportunity, Rowan’s mouth moved down her neck, sucking marks onto her skin as his hands found her ass and squeezed.
They somehow got from the front of her apartment to her bedroom without crashing into anything.
Their breakfast date had been great. The coffee and food were delicious, but both of them wanted to get to the desert that had been promised for afterward.
With a feral grin, Aelin put both hands on his chest and pushed him backwards onto the bed so she was standing over him. Her body lit up as Rowan’s hungry gaze swept up and down.
He sat up on the edge and Aelin leaned forward to leave a lingering kiss on the underside of his jaw as her hands trailed down his chest while his gripped her hips. He tried to pull her forwards to straddle him, but she broke away with a smirk. Not looking away, she sank to her knees in front of him, one of his long legs on either side of her body.
Her hands continued their descent down his torso until she reached his belt. Rowan’s eyes were dark and he groaned as she brushed against him through his pants.
“You were so good to me this morning,” she said, sinking lower and glancing up at him through her lashes as she pulled his belt free and unbuttoned his pants. “I want to return the favor.”
One of his hands carefully pulled her hair away from her face, holding it behind her head. “You can get on your knees for me any fucking time you want.” He told her adamantly, his other rubbed at his jaw as he watched her reach into his underwear and pull out his cock.
Aelin’s smirk turned feline to match her purr, “Likewise.”
Her mouth watered at the sight of his arousal, not having had the chance to see it this up-close before. Flicking her eyes back to his, she spit into her palm and wrapped her hand around him.
At the first contact, he groaned again and the hand in her hair flexed. She smirked as she slowly pumped up and down, watching the little changes in his expression as she tested different pressures.
When she got him to tighten his fingers again, Aelin leaned forward and licked a trail from his base to his tip.
“Gods. Fuck, Aelin.” She met his eyes, enjoying the way his breathing was ragged, and licked that same path again but then swirled her tongue around the sensitive tip, tasting the bitter precum leaking from him. “Shit.” He hissed, jerking his hips forward.
Aelin wrapped her lips around him and sucked. She hollowed out her cheeks and kept one hand on his base to work the length of him she couldn’t fit in her mouth. Reaching back with her other hand, she urged his fingers into a stronger grip on her hair. He responded immediately with a sharp tug on her strands, and she moaned around his shaft.
His other hand moved to her jaw and his thumb lightly caressed her cheek in surprisingly tender movements considering she had his dick down her throat.
Pushing her head forward, she took as much of him as she could until she gagged, swallowing around him.
“Aelin.” He dragged her name out in a low moan. “Fuck, I’m gonna come.”
She didn’t stop bobbing her head up and down, only moved her free hand to his balls as she locked eyes with him through lowered lashes.
“I—Fuuuuuck” His fingers tightened in her hair again as his release filled her mouth and down her throat. Aelin’s hands came to rest on his thighs to brace herself as she took everything he gave her.
Finally, his hand released her hair and gently pulled her off of him. She leaned back on her heels and wiped the side of her mouth, winking as her thumb caught a drop she hadn’t swallowed and sucked it clean.
“Gods, you’re perfect,” Rowan muttered, his eyes a bit foggy in a post-orgasm haze. “Come here.”
She stood, discarding her dress as she did. Rowan loosed another grunt when he realized she hadn’t had anything on under the dress the whole morning. He practically ripped off his own shirt and shoved his pants down.
When the last scrap of clothing was on the floor, Rowan hauled her up his body and she settled on his lap without hesitation, crushing her lips to his in a feverish kiss. He groaned, low in his throat, tasting himself on her tongue, and hissed at his oversensitivity as Aelin rolled her hips over his. She smirked against his mouth and did it again as he bit down on her lower lip, pulling a similarly low groan from her and an extra tug on his hair.
“Stop that,” he hissed, his eyes darkening as she pulled back.
Aelin’s grin turned feline as she trailed her fingers over his skin, tracing lines on his muscular arms. “You weren’t saying that a minute ago,” she hummed, repeating the movement and savoring Rowan’s choked moan.
He gripped her hips with a bruising intensity, forcing her to stop. “Is that how you want to play?” he practically growled, moving one of his hands towards her core and sliding one finger along her slit. “Fuck, baby, you’re soaked.”
Aelin pressed her lips together to hold in her moan as he slipped one, then two of his long fingers into her. He moved them slowly enough that pleasure built in her core, but not enough to send her over the edge. Her fingers wound their way into his hair, pulling on the strands as she kissed him, her tongue moving with his.
When his thumb started to slowly circle her clit, Aelin ground her hips down on his hand, hoping to create more friction than what he was giving her.
“Not so fast,” he teased, sounding far too satisfied with himself.
Then he twisted and dropped Aelin on the bed beside him before getting up and walking out of the room, leaving her to gape at his retreating backside.
“Rowan?” she called out towards her open door incredulously. “I swear to gods, Whitethorn, come back and finish what you started!” She flopped back onto the soft blanket and huffed.
His low chuckle made her lean up on her elbows as he walked back towards her, one hand behind his back.
“So impatient.” He tutted, stalking towards her as his eyes roamed over every inch of exposed skin. She was no better. Aelin licked her lips as she looked her fill upon Rowan’s impressive physique, her eyes zeroing in on the appendage growing stiff between his legs.
But the look in his eyes, dark with desire, made her slowly inch back on the bed. His smirk widened. When he reached the end of the bed, he showed her what he’d been hiding behind his back. “Don’t think I forgot about this.”
Aelin’s brows shot up as she looked at the vibrator in Rowan’s hand. The one he’d accidentally opened, and she’d subsequently thrown across her apartment.
Glancing back up at him, she cocked her head to the side. “I thought the point of you was so I wouldn’t need that?”
His smirk only widened as he rounded the bed and cupped her jaw in his hand. “Maybe. But you wouldn’t want it to go to waste, would you?”
His thumb brushed over the lip she hadn’t realized she’d been biting, pulling it free of her teeth. She sucked it into her mouth. Aelin could feel another surge of heat and wetness pool at her core at the thought of what Rowan could do to her with that toy. She lowered her lashes and said back, “Definitely not. I want my money’s worth.”
His expression turned downright feral as his hand gripped the nape of her neck and kissed her ferociously. She wanted to pull him down on top of her but before she could, Rowan’s mouth left hers and he propped himself up against the headboard. At her questioning glance, he reached forward and hauled her in front of him so that her back was flush with his chest.
She pressed into him as one of his hands slid from her knee towards her upper thigh. His other hand snaked across her chest ghosting over the soft swells of her breasts, his thumb slowly rubbing over her sensitive peaks. The hand on her leg dipped towards her center, and she stifled a gasp as one of his fingers lightly brushed along her damp slit before dragging back down her leg.
Aelin reached an arm behind her to hook around his neck, her fingers gripping his hair as the hand on her chest vanished and both of his large palms moved from her knees up to her inner thighs and back down. Rowan gripped the underside of both of her knees, and in one swift motion, lifted her legs and hooked them on the outside of his.
With her ankles secured behind his calves, she couldn’t—wouldn’t—stop him as he spread his legs further, forcing hers to open wide.
Rowan reached one arm towards the vibrator he’d dropped on the bed.
“You sucked my cock so beautifully—I need a few minutes to recharge so that I can fuck you properly. ” Shivers coursed down her spine at the low, gravelly sound of Rowan’s voice. Then he taunted, “You tried to tease me into oversensitivity?” his lips brushed her ear. “Let’s see how you like it.”
Aelin hissed in a sharp breath even as she felt another rush of arousal dampen her already-dripping core.
He swiped his finger down her center and dragged it up her stomach, leaving a glistening trail of her wetness. He huffed a laugh, and she felt his chest rumble behind her. “So responsive.”
The arm at her waist snaked up to turn her head to the side so he could hungrily kiss her. She moaned when she heard the buzz of the vibrator turning on. Breaking away, Aelin was pleased to see that he was panting as hard as she was.
“Do your worst,” she breathed, her voice full of challenge.
“Fuck,” he breathed, kissing her once more before she felt the soft vibrations hit her clit.
Aelin’s hips jerked at the first touch. The setting was low she could tell, but she was so worked up already that she knew it wouldn’t take much more to send her over the edge.
“That’s it, baby,” Rowan murmured, tightening the arm holding her to his chest. “You’re not going anywhere.”
Her breathing was heavier, and she whined as he turned the vibrations up. “Rowan, fuck,”
Rowan twisted and rubbed at her nipples to coax a myriad of gasps and whimpers out of her as he kept the toy firmly atop her clit.
“How many times do you think I can get you to come like this?” He asked, nipping at the sensitive skin behind her ear. “I’m aiming for three, if you can handle that then I’ll give you a break.”
“Yes! Please.” She groaned, already feeling her orgasm growing.
He kissed her temple. “You sound so pretty when you beg.”
“Fuck,” she hissed, “Oh, gods. Fuck me, Rowan.”
He moved his legs outwards another inch, opening her up wider, and turned the setting up a notch. “Later.”
Aelin’s orgasm peaked, and she shook as waves of pleasure crested through her. Rowan’s grip tightened on her and she could feel the hard press of his cock beneath her.
When her breathing calmed down, she turned her head to kiss him. Neither broke the kiss as Rowan trailed the device down from her clit and coated it in her arousal. She moaned into his mouth as he slowly pushed the still-buzzing tip into her.
“Oh, my gods,” she groaned, dropping her head so he could kiss down her neck. Her chuckle was breathy as she said, “thank fuck for faulty deliveries.”
Rowan’s head jerked up with a satisfied grin. Their gazes met, and beneath the layers of desire, she could see amusement twinkling in his pine-green eyes. “I’ll thank the FedEx guy next time I see him.” He teased, his voice still heavy with lust. Then her laugh cut off into a high-pitched moan as he moved the vibrator back to her clit.
“Don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop!” She cried, squeezing her eyes shut as her nails dug into the skin on his arm as he pinched one nipple between his fingers.
“Wasn’t planning to,” he groaned. Rowan kept the device steady as the tension in her built and built. When he stretched one finger from the hand holding the vibe down towards her hole and pushed in, she shattered.
“Rowan!” Aelin moaned loudly, one of her arms moving back towards his hair. The hand at her breast moved to her waist and rubbed calming circles on her skin.
When the waves of her second orgasm finally slowed, she expected Rowan to do something else, maybe give her his cock, but he kept the vibrator pushed against her too-sensitive clit.
And then he turned it up.
Aelin couldn’t close her legs as they shook violently. Her fingers tightened in Rowan’s hair and her other hand clutched at the arm banded around her midsection, holding on for dear life as he kept the vibrations pulsing against her throbbing clit.
His thumb from the hand around her body resumed rubbing soothing circles on the soft flesh under her breast, but it did nothing to lessen the almost burning sensation at her core.
She couldn’t form any coherent words, and she’d stopped listening to whatever Rowan was murmuring in her ear. It was too much. But all she wanted was more, just a little more.
Rowan started to move the vibrator in small, tight circles over her bud, making her cry out at the change in sensation. She felt his lips leave a trail of hot kisses down her neck, behind her ear, until she could feel his breath fanning over the shell. Rowan nipped at her earlobe and she cried out again, the sharp jerk of her hips causing the device to lose its place and she almost sobbed at its loss before Rowan fixed it.
Her breathing came in heavy ragged intakes, and the knot of pleasure tightened and tightened. Her hips jerked again but this time, Rowan kept the vibe on her clit as she moved. Her hips sped up, chasing that peak she knew would be pure ecstasy.
“Just like that,” His low voice rasped in her ear as he turned the speed up to its highest setting. “Take what you need, baby.”
The sound that escaped her was broken and desperate.
“Now cum.” He demanded.
And gods, she did.
She screamed as her orgasm finally hit her. Her head flew back onto Rowan’s shoulders and her hips would’ve arched off his body if he hadn’t dropped his arm to hold her firmly against him. The tension broke, setting every nerve in her body alight.
Rowan alternated between pressing soft kisses to her skin and muttering quiet praises in her ear as he slowly lowered the vibrations, coaxing her through her high. Her legs shook and her hips jerked as aftershocks rocketed through her
At some point, he’d set the vibrator down and gently unhooked her legs from his. Some foggy part of her brain knew she’d be sore later, but she couldn’t bring herself to care as her panting slowly evened out. Her eyes had shut, and she blinked them open when Rowan twisted her so she was leaning sideways into his chest with her legs over one of his and his arms wrapped around her.
She felt boneless.
“How are you feeling?” He asked softly as she nuzzled her face into his neck, breathing him in.
She smiled against his skin and he tightened his hold on her. “I feel like you gave me four fucking amazing orgasms today and wrung me out.”
He chuckled, jostling her, and she huffed a laugh.
Rowan shuffled down the bed so they were laying down. Then he reached for the discarded blanket and pulled it over them.
“Sleep.” He told her gently when she dazedly dragged her hand down his stomach towards his cock. “When you wake up, I’ll fuck you like I promised.”
Aelin hummed contentedly. She nuzzled into his chest, her words slightly muffled as she murmured. “You could always fuck me awake. But give me at least an hour to rest.”
Rowan leaned down to press a kiss to her temple, brushing aside some damp strands of hair. She could feel him grinning against her skin, so she snuggled further into him as he tightened his arms around her.
“Sleep.” He insisted again.
Aelin did. Thoroughly spent and happy that she could look forward to this, and to Rowan, every day.

I'd Find Something
Tumblr media
Nesta goes to get her Christmas tree and gets help putting the tree on the roof of her car from an unexpected source.
Warnings: None | Word Count: 1,673 | Read on AO3
Previous Piece | Hope for the Holidays Masterlist | Nessian Masterlist
a/n: Based on this request.
This will likely be my last update for this AU for a while. It's not being abandoned, but this year I'm going to try to be more focused in what I'm actively working on and treating my Continuous AU fics as they're meant to be treated - update when inspired. My ask box is open and you're welcome to send prompts for this AU - or any of my other ones - but they'll likely sit in my ask box for a while. (Sadly, that's not uncommon with a lot of my asks. 👀)
Tumblr media
"This is my car."
Nesta pointed to her black Jeep Cherokee as she led the teen boy toward it. He held her tree over his shoulder.
"This one?" he asked in a bored tone, placing the tree down and leaning it against the car.
"Yes, thank you. I'd like it on the ro-" She stopped talking when she saw him just walk away, leaving the rope to tie her tree up draped over the bound branches. "Guess I'll do it…"
Turning back to the tree, Nesta looked it up and down, trying to figure out how she could get a six-foot tree onto the roof of her car. She stood there scowling for a full minute.
It was impossible. There was no way she could get it up there without help, as much as she hated to admit it. But, if she went back to the lot to get someone, she'd have to leave the tree unattended. Yes, the likelihood of the tree getting stolen was fairly low - it wasn't an easy thing to move - but still, it was a risk she'd rather not take.
Unable to find another option, she was just about to head back to the lot when she heard a bit of a thump on her car.
"Something puzzling you, sweetheart?"
Nesta's head snapped up and she met that same pair of hazel eyes that had been haunting her for days.
She didn't try to think about them. She just couldn't help it. They'd lodged themselves into her head, along with the face and body that held them, the voice that accompanied them, the man that wielded them like a weapon designed to shatter Nesta entirely.
"We talked about that nickname," she said by way of greeting, pressing her lips together tightly.
Cassian smirked, the bright day reflecting in his eyes, his light brown skin seeming to glow beneath the sun. "We did, but it fits you so well."
"If you knew me better, you'd know there's nothing sweet about me."
Something like fire flashed across Cassian's gaze as it rolled down Nesta's body, lingering on a spot that was suddenly heating. "Pretty sure I'd find at least one thing."
Nesta felt her cheeks flush as his eyes found hers again. She tried to respond but couldn't find the words.
Rendered speechless in the damn parking lot of a Christmas Tree farm. It was enough to set her teeth grinding.
Fuck this man and his stupid, perfect, inhumanly strong body. His rough-hewn face that always seemed to soften whenever he looked at her. His smooth words and wickedly enchanting smirk.
Yeah, fuck him. Nesta definitely wanted to be involved in that.
But no. That was a bad idea. Because Nesta could tell she wanted more than just a tumble in the sheets with this man, and that was dangerous territory.
"Too bad you'll never get the chance," she finally shot back, her eyes glistening with a wicked smirk she wasn't wearing on her lips.
He stepped closer to her. "Never say never, sweetheart."
Another step and Nesta was inhaling sharply, a thundering in her chest that sent her whole body vibrating. One deep breath and her breasts would be brushing against his chest.
He leaned in and she froze. He was so close. Her gaze involuntary flicked between his lips and eyes.
Cassian paused long enough to send her a cocky half-smile before he twisted slightly and lifted a hand to the tree beside her. She blew out her breath as he eyed the tree.
"Need help getting this up?"
"I do, actually. If you don't mind," she admitted. Nesta barely recognized the breathy voice that came out. "The guy who brought it here just left me with it before putting it up on the roof."
He let out a sour laugh. "What great customer service." His hair twirled around his face as he shook his head. "I can get it up, but what exactly are you going to do when you get home?"
Nesta's mouth tightened, her eyes flicking to the right. She shifted her weight to her left side awkwardly. "I…hadn't thought about that. Guess I'll figure it out when I get there."
"Really? And you seem like such a planner." He chuckled as Nesta crossed her arms over her chest. "Don't worry, Nesta. How about you let me follow you home and I'll help you take it down, too."
"Oh, no, you don't have t-"
"Please," he added, his voice a bit softer, his hazel eyes as large as a puppy's. "I'd like to help."
She gave him a small smile and nodded. "Okay. Thank you."
He beamed down at her, his grin wide and bright.
Without another word, Cassian side-stepped toward the tree, brought his other hand up, and lifted it easily. He had it up on Nesta's roof in less than thirty seconds. Then they were securing it with the rope that had been left on the tree.
Nesta held back the 'wow' that immediately flashed across her mind. She doubted Cassian needed it. Nor did he need to know just how flushed she felt in watching him maneuver the 50-pound tree like it were a bag of feathers.
It had her wondering what he could do with her. To her.
"Do you need some time to get what you came here for?" she asked, focusing on the already tied ropes.
"It's already packed away." He pointed at the motorcycle in the spot opposite hers. Of course he rode a motorcycle. "You were quite focused on the tree when I walked up. I felt rather invisible."
"I'm sure it was good for you. Your head is rather large."
"I think you like it." Cassian turned toward his bike, laughing as he walked across the lane.
Tumblr media
The roaring motorcycle pulled into Nesta's driveway just after she did.
Stepping out of her car, she found herself wishing she'd waited for Cassian to turn it off. She couldn't imagine ever riding one, not with the lack of a barrier against the sound of the engine.
Still, Cassian did look good shaking his hair out as he took off his helmet. It almost seemed to be playing in slow motion.
In and out. Nesta would need to get him in and out or she would do something truly idiotic.
He swung his leg over the seat and draped the helmet on the handle. "Cute place."
Nesta followed his eyes to her small, mostly brick house.
"Thank you. Elain maintains the garden," she replied, turning back to her car to start undoing the ties.
"I'm not surprised," he chuckled. It took him a moment before he joined her at the car, working through the back knots. "All clear at the front?"
She stepped back from the car. "Yeah, I'll go open the door."
Rushing up the stairs, Nesta unlocked the door and walked inside, scanning the small entrance and living room for anything embarrassing. She almost missed the bra dangling over the arm rest on one side of the sofa. Nesta shoved it into her purse quickly and then went back to the door.
Cassian walked through the doorway, holding the tree to his side.
"I have the holder set up just in here," Nesta offered, shutting the door behind him before leading him into the living room and toward the front left corner.
And so began twenty minutes of tiny adjustments and constantly switching positions to try and get the tree perfectly straight. Nesta was practically sweating at the end of it, finally shedding her coat and ready to plop down on the sofa as soon as Cassian was gone.
"It looks great," she sighed, giving him a small smile.
He beamed down at her. "Need help with anything else while I'm here? Lifting heavy objects? Stringing lights on the roof? Getting the star on top of the tree?"
"Well, first of all, there will be no star on my tree," Nesta scoffed. "This is an angel tree topper household."
"It's okay to be wrong sometimes."
Nesta quirked an eyebrow up at Cassian, her mouth curving into a smirk. "I'm glad you think so. You clearly need to remind yourself of that often."
He chuckled with Nesta, his eyes lighting up with the laughter. It had Nesta's face falling into something softer as she started at him.
"I'm good though, thank you."
"Well, at least let me hang this, then," he said, pulling out a leafy twig with a small, red ribbon on it.
"You can't be serious?" Nesta couldn't help be let out a snort as she took in the small sprig of mistletoe.
Cassian's smile only grew. "It's why I was at the lot, picking up a bunch to string around Rhys's. You always want to be the person hanging the mistletoe - then you can trick others into ending up beneath it."
"I hope you'll give me the inside scoop." Nesta began leading him to her door, Cassian walking beside her, his bicep brushing her shoulder.
"I could be persuaded," he breathed, stopping just before the door and turning to look at her. "And I think here is a perfect spot." He reached up and hung the sprig from the small chandelier they were standing under. "You know the rules, sweetheart."
Nesta rolled her eyes. Inhaling deeply, she pushed herself onto her toes and pressed a lingering kiss to his cheek. "Thank you for your help, Cassian," she whispered into his ear.
Cassian ducked his face as a light pink flushed across his cheeks. He lifted his hand to scratch the back of his head before looking up again and finding her eyes. When he did, he flashed her a crooked grin and then leaned to the side to open the door.
"Next time, I get to kiss you."
Nesta felt her heart flutter softly. "Who says there will be a next time?"
"Me. I'm the one who'll be hanging the mistletoe."
With a wink, Cassian pivoted and walked out the door, closing it behind him.

SERIOUSLY! I mean, if I was going to steal someone's fic and make it Nessian, I'd probably rewrite every sentence. Restructure. Adjust descriptions. Change some plot points. And then the entire plot. And then it's not even a fic about two people who met on a boat and fell in love, they're actually pre-established secret lovers who live up in a landlocked mountain town and are trying to keep the secret while working together to save the town from a predicted volcanic eruption. 👀😂
Wait what happened tho i need some teaa
An anti Nesta/Feysand stan plagiarized @talkfantasytome’s fic and just swapped out names and minor details before ripping off my paint it red vampire/vampire hunter concept but for Feysand. my tumblr fam rallied and they deactivated their account. for bitches who hate Nesta so much they sure do love ripping off her stans’ content huh

The also took one of @nesquik-arccheron's fics and did the same. I think they might've made a few more/bigger edits? But not much, if I understand correctly. It was still very much her fic with Rhys and Feyre replacing Cassian and Nesta. Didn't even adjust the physical description of Cassian in mine, and I think it was the same with the other one. 👀

💕💕 Yeah, I just gotta. But this is open so there's always a chance more will come. Plus, doing it this way means I'll likely do a lot more scenes than I may have initially, really soak up all the possible holiday stuff and flirty-ness. 😂
And thank you!!!! They really are! 😄 I love me a 'just-going-for-it' style Cassian.

Nesta goes to get her Christmas tree and gets help putting the tree on the roof of her car from an unexpected source.

😬😂 I do! There's one more part to this story. And I've already promised someone else that, in general, when it comes to Nessian, they can trust me. Soooooo... 👀
I am here to formally request a part four of the masquerade au please and thank you 🥺🧎‍♀️
Request granted!

Meetings come with their ups and downs. Ups, Cassian gets to see Nesta again. Downs, he also has to see Eris Vanserra. It's worse than he thought it would be.

a/n: There will be one more part to this!
Shoutout to everyone who helped me come up with a nickname Eris would use on Nesta! I picked a rather obscure one that just FIT for this purpose, even though it typically wouldn't. Plus, I had the best come back for it. 👀
Also, Az's characterization may be a bit...off for this. But, like, it was necessary and fully supports the Azsta brotp. 😄
Tumblr media
Cassian sat in the large conference room, his arms crossed and lips turned down in a scowl.
He hadn't planned on coming in that week. No one else was working between Christmas and the new year, and he and his brothers all agreed they'd take the time off, too. They should've known such a long, uninterrupted break would never be allowed.
And who did he have to thank? None other than the fucking prick sitting in front of him, smirking at Cassian as if he knew exactly what he was doing.
Apparently, this was the only week Eris Vanserra had any free time to meet with his lawyer.
Yeah right.
Cassian was willing to bet his entire savings that Eris had done this with the hope that he'd be able to delay the meeting another six months, knowing that if he failed he'd at least be annoying them.
He was right; the dick. And it didn't help that Nesta would be in the meeting too.
They'd seen each other since that disastrous day in November, but hadn't spoken about anything other than the case. The meetings they had together were short and professional and absolute hell. Cassian couldn't stop his heart from leaping at the mere sight of her, couldn't keep his stomach from twisting at the sound of her voice. And he definitely couldn't control the fantasies that haunted his mind every night in bed, not to mention far too many times during the day.
The truth was, Cassian was just as gone as he was in high school, and every minute he spent with her only made it worse.
He'd told her he would wait for her until he learned how to move on, but Cassian knew it was a lie. He knew that was the one thing he'd never be able to learn.
Cassian began to tap his finger against the table, looking around the large room. It was just him, Eris, and Eris's spindly looking lawyer, sitting and waiting for Rhys, Az, and Nesta to show up. The room was still decorated with pine garlands, just like all the conference rooms and hallways. It was the only thing they bothered putting up. Most of their employees often doing more in their offices or work areas.
One minute before the meeting was supposed to start, Cassian heard the soft pitter-patter of footsteps coming down the hall. His eyes snapped to the open door just as Nesta appeared. Her hair was pulled into a messy bun that still somehow looked professional, the style managing to highlight her sharp features and make her look even more intimidating than she typically did. It was quite a feat.
He stood instinctively when she walked in and she offered him a greeting as he pulled a chair out for her. He could feel Eris's eyes on them, but he didn't care. Especially not as he watched Eris's lawyer's eyes widen at the sight of her, his face draining of what color he had.
"Arobynn," Nesta said as a flat hello, scooting her chair closer to the table as she started to pull some notes and files out of her briefcase.
"N-Nesta." The lawyer's voice quivered. It had Cassian smiling softly to himself as he walked over to the counter at the front of the room and poured a glass of ice water from the pitcher that was there.
He was back at the table in seconds, placing the water in front of Nesta before taking his seat to her right. He tried to ignore the smirk and glint in Eris's eye. It didn't last as Eris leaned forward on his elbows.
"If I knew there were lawyers in Velaris that looked like you, I'd have given this guy the boot." Eris's eyes rolled over Nesta's torso, taking in every inch of her he could. His gaze lingered on her breasts in a way that had Cassian gripping the seat of his chair to keep him from doing something stupid.
"Then you'd have no lawyers," Nesta shot back, flat and indifferent and perfectly poised.
"I'd hire you."
"I wouldn't accept."
Eris's lips curved into a smirk. "We should have dinner some time."
She loosed a breath, looking down at the notes she was laying in front of her. It was enough to help Cassian relax.
"I don't date people I'm currently dealing with in a case," she finally replied, looking back up at Eris.
"You could've fooled me." His eyes flicked to Cassian as he leaned back in his chair. "Fine, how about after?"
Cassian wanted to punch that smug smile right off his face, but before he could Eris's lawyer leaned over and whispered in his ear.
Nesta offered Eris a knowing smile once his lawyer was done. "Assuming Arobynn just told you to shut up before I slam you with a sexual harassment suit that will not only ruin your reputation, but make it even more difficult for you to win this case, I'd suggest you take his advice."
His eyes narrowed and he crossed his arms over his chest. Cassian had to resist the urge to smile.
"I'm not worried, Sunshine."
Nesta tensed beside him, making Cassian want to reach out and rest a hand on her knee. But he doubted that would actually help calm her. That she would welcome such a gesture.
She schooled her features quickly on her own. "You should be. You look like you burn easily."
Tumblr media
The meeting was brutal.
Nesta wasn't sure if she required a nice, hot, disinfecting shower after the looks Eris kept giving her; or if she was in need of a freezing downpour to cool off after two hours sitting next to Cassian.
Apparently, the answer was neither.
Instead, she had to spend an hour debriefing with Rhys on the meeting. It was basically an hour of assuring him that she had this case in the bag. And when she was finally free and on her way out, Azriel intercepted her, all but kidnapping her for lunch.
"Where's your car?" she groaned as he followed her to the sleek, Jeep Cherokee she drove.
"I drove in with Rhys today." He slid into the front seat as soon as the car was unlocked, moving as if he was worried she'd speed away before he could get in.
She'd considered it.
"Okay, can't I just drop you somewhere, then? I'd really like to go home."
Azriel shook his head, fiddling with the radio dials. "Nope. We haven't had a chance to catch up since Halloween, so we're getting lunch whether you like it or not."
"I've seen you every week!"
"All we do is talk about the case," Az sighed, leaning back in his seat once he found a decent station. "Besides, it doesn't count as catch-up time if you're being paid for it."
Nesta's face scrunched as she pulled out of the lot. "Fine, where are we going?"
"I told you. Lunch!"
"I'm going to need to know where, seeing as I'm driving."
She could practically hear Az roll his eyes as he plugged his phone into her CarPlay and put in the destination. It was a café Nesta knew extremely well.
"Oh, I love that place! It's right up the street from my building. I can just park at home." She grinned widely at Az and started toward her place.
It wasn't too long a drive to Nesta's apartment building. She was parked within fifteen minutes and then they were both standing from her car and starting out the parking lot and down the street. It was the better option. Parking on the street could get pricey.
The café was just getting over its lunch rush, it seemed, about half the table still full. It was a cute place. Decorated in blues and silvers with comfy chairs around small tables along the wall. There were also a number of tables that had a country chic feel to them, along with their chairs, all in the back past the counter where people could order food or coffee to go.
Azriel and Nesta settled at one of those back tables, accepting the menus from the host and then being left alone to look them over.
"I didn't realize you knew this place," Az admitted.
Nesta nodded softly. "It's got the best sandwiches in the area. How do you know it? Don't you live on the other side of the city?"
Azriel let out a small chuckle as he answered, "Through Cassian. It's his favorite place, too."
She froze in place, her eyes flashing up to Az instinctively before she could stop them. Nesta flicked her gaze back to the menu as quickly as she could. It didn't matter. He'd already marked the movement.
"Nesta…"
"I really hope he's not why you brought me here," she said tensely, refusing to look up again.
His lips curved into a small smirk. "I just wanted to talk. Catch-up, like I said earlier."
"Catch up about?"
Nesta leaned against the back of her chair and crossed her arms, but before Azriel could respond their waitress showed up to take their orders. After Nesta ordered a tuna melt and water, she focused her glare back on Azriel.
"Why?" Azriel asked once the waitress was gone. He provided no context, nothing to explain the question further.
It forced Nesta to reply with, "Why what?"
"Why are you breaking his heart?"
Her eyes widened at the question, at the sheer audacity. Az had never been one to meddle so thoroughly. Nor did he ever attempt to condemn Nesta like this.
"Excuse me?!" She leaned forward slightly, her heart beating wildly. "What about my heart?"
"It's not broken," he said simply as he gave her a look that seemed to add something like a duh.
"You don't know that."
Azriel snorted. "You and I both know I can read you like a book. You can't hide from me the way you do others."
Nesta's teeth ground together as she looked away, staring at the tiled floor. Her gaze focused on a black tile surrounded by white, the hexagonal shape of the tiles imitated by the shape of the white tiles around the black. Dark and lonely in a sea of good and wholesomeness. She could relate.
She hated that Az was right, that after almost ten years he still knew her better than almost anyone. And he was fine using it against her.
"If you're so smart, why don't you tell me," she mumbled. Nesta didn't look away from that one tile.
"I do have a guess." She could hear the small smile in his voice. "You're breaking his heart before he can break yours." Her head snapped up, meeting his hazel eyes, darker and colder than Cassian's. It wasn't a freezing cold, but something calculating and tentative. A coldness that kept most people at bay.
Nesta knew it as well as Azriel seemed to know her. It was an ice reflected in her own eyes.
"I-I…I'm not…"
She couldn't find the words. Didn't know how to express the truth without saying something she didn't even want to admit to herself.
Azriel's eyes softened, his hand finding hers over the table and resting gently on it. "You are, Nesta. And I think you know it. I don't blame you, but I do think you're making a mistake."
Her gaze dipped down to the empty spot where her plate would eventually go.
"I don't want to hurt him," she whispered, the pit in her stomach growing exponentially. "I just…"
"Don't want to get hurt yourself, either." He finished her sentence easily. As if it were something he'd experienced himself countless times. "Do you really think Cassian would hurt you, though?"
"He could."
Azriel huffed out a dry laugh. "Bet he could make you happy, too. If you let him. And I don't think any man would ever be able to make you feel as loved."
"No man has ever made me feel less wanted, either," she shot back, something firming up inside her. A narrowed glare found him again, her lips tightening against her teeth. "I always thought Cassian wanted me for me. But after that party, it's like that all completely disappeared. Because now I know it's not me he wants."
"Oh my gods." Azriel's face dropped as he leaned back, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. "I didn't realize you got stupid."
"What?!"
"For fuck's sake, Nesta. This is Cassian we're talking about! That boy has barely thought of anyone, anything other than you since Freshman year." She quirked an eyebrow up at him, but he simply chuckled. "Okay, fine. He's had other thoughts. Technically. But, you're always there in his mind."
Nesta didn't respond, taking the moment to place her napkin in her lap to have something to do. To hide the warmth that was suddenly spreading through her.
She didn't know why it mattered. Why Az's words seemed to mean so much. Why they hit her right in the heart and had her lips twitching upward.
Azriel took her silence as permission to continue. "You two belong together, Nesta. I kept my mouth shut in high school because we had a lot of big life steps ahead of us. But now, seeing you two thrown back together with this case, when we're all far more settled…you'd be an idiot not to give him a chance. To give yourself this chance."
"And what exactly am I supposed to do?"
"Again, I'd suggest you talk to him."
Tumblr media
Cassian took one step into his favorite café and froze.
He didn't have many expectations for the rest of the day. His plans mainly consisted of getting a sandwich to go and then heading home where he'd spend the rest of the afternoon trying not to think about Nesta.
One thing he never expected to see was Azriel and Nesta practically cuddled up in the back of his favorite café, his best friend's hand resting on Nesta's as he stared softly at her.
His gut grew hollow. A freezing, tingling sensation flooded his mind while his body felt as if it were sinking into the floor.
Before he did something stupid, Cassian pivoted on one foot and stormed back out the door.

Yeah, my poor babies. 😥💕
For the love confession prompts, how about #20 "I can't lose you again! Please, don't make me lose you again." for Nessian?
OKAY! I finally finished this, took me a little while. 😄
This isn't part of my 500 followers celebration, but the ask box is open for prompts for that! This just happens to be posted the same day cause I was always planning on posting it today. 😂

"Cassian…Cassian…"
Azriel's voice was ringing in his mind, but he couldn't figure out why.
"CASSIAN!"
Cassian's head snapped up so violently, his chair pushed backward and he slipped off it, landing on his ass on the floor.
"Shit!" Cassian pulled himself up using his desk, glaring at his now-laughing brother. "Did you really need to shout so loud?"
"Yes. You weren't waking up," Az explained through further chuckles.
"Waking up?"
"Yeah. You were dead asleep. Did you talk to Nesta?"
"Nesta?" Cassian was definitely feeling groggy, confusion fogging his brain. "No, not yet, she's in the meeting with Rhys."
Az's eyes widened as he breathed in deeply. "Uh…Cass…Nesta left, like, two hours ago."
"What?!" Cassian all but snapped, a pit sinking deep into his stomach. "You're joking."
"Sorry, brother." Az offered him a sad grimace.
Before his brain could fully catch up, Cassian was moving, gathering his things and shoving them into his computer bag. "I have to go."
"Right now?"
"I have to talk to her," Cassian sighed, desperately searching for his phone.
"Come on, man. You can't go now. This is Nesta. You really think she'll be okay with you just barging into her office in the middle of the day?" Az raised his eyebrows as if to tell Cassian it was obvious. Which it was, if he were being honest. That's definitely not something Nesta would appreciate.
He plopped down into his chair. "Then what am I supposed to do? I don't know where she lives, I don't have her number…my only way to get to her is at her office. Unless…I'm assuming you or Rhys have her number?"
"Yeah, I do," Az nodded. "And her cell." He smirked wickedly at Cassian. "But I'm not giving it to you. Not my place."
Cassian groaned loudly, leaning back violently against his chair. "Come on, Az! You just said Nesta won't like me barging into her office! How else am I supposed to talk to her."
Rolling his eyes, Az turned and started out the door, pausing in the threshold. "In the middle of the day," he repeated over his shoulder before he walked toward his own office.

Nesta spent the afternoon drowning in her work…purposefully.
It had been an absolutely horrific day following a terrible week. All she could think about was the Halloween party. About Cassian. The feel of his hands on her, his lips. The timbre of his voice as he brought his thumb down below the belt.
But she couldn't think about that. She had a mountain of contracts to read through, not to mention the stack of books and boxes on the floor beside her desk - research for the Vanserra case. Courtesy of Rhys from that morning.
Just something else to add to the whole crappy situation.
She saw him, standing there, staring in shock as she walked into Rhys's office. At least he finally figured it out. And Nesta could admit it was nice to know he hadn't already forgotten, even if he'd had no idea who she was at the party. And even if that hurt her heart more than she'd ever say.
Nesta managed to distract herself eventually, diving deep enough into the details of some complicated contracts and finding a ton of footnotes that added in unfavorable terms for her client. She hadn't even realized it was past six until there was a knock on her door that had her looking up and seeing the clock above it.
"There's a man here to see you," her assistant - Deidre - explained.
Nesta nodded, standing up. "Thank you. Why are you still here, Deidre?"
"Because you are."
"You can go home," Nesta sighed, offering her a small smile. "You don't need to stay as late as me. Just, who is it?"
"He said his name was Cassian."
She felt herself freeze in the midst of brushing some wrinkles out of her skirt. That was the last name she'd been expecting.
Nesta had hoped he would want to speak with her that morning. That he'd be waiting for her or seek her out after her meeting. Hell, she even stopped by his office after saying bye to Az, only to find him sleeping at his desk. Clearly not caring about having a chance to talk, so what was he doing at her office now?
"You can see him in."
Deidre bobbed her head and turned. It was less than a few seconds before he walked through the door, taking up all the air in the room just by standing there, flashing her that cocky half-smile he always used to wear.
"Hey Nesta. I'd say long time no see, but apparently that's not entirely true."
Nesta steeled herself, breathing in deeply as she took him in.
His hair was ruffled, the tuck in his shirt looser than it had been that morning, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his strong forearms. He looked so good it should be illegal, but she didn't let him see that. She just crossed the room and shut the door behind him as she asked, "How can I help you?"
"Help me?" he repeated, his low voice tentative and uncertain.
"You're at my office. I can only assume it has something to do with the case." She walked back toward her desk, but was paused by his hand lightly grabbing her wrist.
His eyes met hers, and Nesta thought she might lose herself in that gaze forever if she held it for too long.
"Not exactly."
"Then what are you doing here?" She pulled her hand from his grip and crossed her arms over her chest.
Cassian sighed, looking almost taken aback by her actions. "I was hoping we could talk."
"At my place of work?"
"I didn't exactly have another way of contacting you."
Nesta huffed out a laugh, shaking her head slightly. "I am on facebook."
"You and I both know you never check it or respond to anyone on there," he argued. "And Az wouldn't give me your number."
"I always did like him best." She couldn't help the small smile that spread at that comment. It was nice to know, even after all these years, that Az was still her friend. Not just part of a group. Not just friendly with her. But her actual friend, someone who'd defend her, support her.
Cassian's eyes narrowed, and Nesta wondered how deeply he'd read into her words. He really could be quite the idiot.
"I want to talk about last week," he explained, stepping toward her.
"What about last week?" She leaned back against her desk, needing something sturdy to keep her up as Cassian's gaze bore into her.
"The party."
"What about the party?"
He let out a small groan, throwing his head back for a second. "Don't play dumb, Nesta."
"Why? Because that's your job?"
She'd meant the words in jest, but they came out far icier than intended. She noticed Cassian flinch, hearing the truth she hadn't wanted to share. But of course she did, to him. He always saw too much when it came to her, and she'd never figured out how to stop it.
"Nesta," he sighed softly. "I am so sorry. I-I should've recognized you. Honestly, I can't believe I didn't. Because I never forgot you."
Nesta shrugged, looking down at her feet to give her a moment to settle herself without looking into those stupid, hazel eyes. Open, honest, and sincere, just like always.
"It's not important," she lied, attempting to backtrack from what she'd accidentally revealed. "We had fun." She finally looked up at him, her face flattened, her stare now like steel. "I got off, you get to say you finally kissed me. It's a win-win." Nesta stood tall as she started making her way around her desk. "No need to harp on it or make it something more."
She went to sit down, knowing the action would be as clear a dismissal as any, but Cassian dashed across the room, so fast it felt like he'd teleported. His hands found her waist and he turned her to look at him.
"Don't say that. Don't turn it into something so small," he pleaded, his stare solemn.
"But it was. Especially for you. You were just hooking up with some random girl."
Cassian huffed out an irritated laugh. "You weren't random, Nesta. I may not have known exactly who you were consciously, but my heart knew." He lifted one of his hands to take hers, placing it on his chest. "And don't think for two seconds all I thought you were was a one-night stand. You were more from the second you told me the guys in the house were going to remove their heads. Just like you were more the very moment I saw you that first day freshman year. All this does is make me want you more, because now you're the two women I've wanted more than anyone else in my entire life, all in one."
Nesta felt tears begin to pool in her eyes. She breathed in deeply in an attempt to control them as she shook her head. Leaving her hand where he placed it, she was just able to feel the beating of his heart beneath it, as if it were a song written just for her. But she couldn't let herself get lost in it. Couldn't let herself go down this path.
"Please, Nesta," he continued. "Don't shove that night aside. Let it be the start of something."
Another inhale, and she looked up at him, the heat subsiding slightly behind her gaze. "I can't, Cass."
"What do you mean 'you can't'?" he asked softly, furrowing his brows.
"I can't do whatever it is you're looking for. We just…we haven't seen each other in seven years." She said the last bit through a laugh, but no amusement shone through her words. "We shouldn't be surprised that we don't know each other like we used to."
His hand tightened around hers, as if he was worried she'd pull it away and then disappear. "We still do. I may not know your current favorite book, you may not know where I went for my last vacation, but we know each other's cores. Our very essences."
"Turkey," Nesta replied with certainty. Because she did know that. She likely knew a lot more than he thought. "And yet, you didn't recognize me."
Surprise jolted across Cassian's face. Shock and awe swirling together as if they were the brown and green of his eyes, the golden flecks the tenderness that always glimmered when he looked at her. "Don't let that stop us from giving this a chance. I've always known we could be something great. Something truly spectacular. Don't let us lose that."
Nesta only shook her head again. "We're not there anymore."
"We are," he breathed, taking another step closer so that their chests brushed together with each breath. "Nes, please…let me prove it to you."
She looked down, shutting her eyes to hide the tears that were growing again at hearing that name. The one only Cassian used. The one only Cassian was allowed to use. The one her friends from college had once called her, only to be shut down entirely by Nesta. They assumed it was because she hated nicknames. They never knew it was because she couldn't imagine being called that by anyone other than Cassian. That it was because someone else had already claimed the name…along with her heart.
It only strengthened her resolve.
Lifting her head, she unflinchingly declared, "I can't be with someone who always has to prove something to me."
A loud breath escaped from Cassian's lips as if he'd been punched in the gut. He took a step backward, gaping at her, his eyes wide and full of disbelief.
"I'm sorry," she added, holding her head high.
She watched as something shifted within him. As his eyes narrowed and darkened, not from lust, but from something else. Something akin to rage, as if it had been made from a mixture of sorrow, fear, and despair.
"You keep saying you 'can't', but let's be honest here. It's not that you can't, it's that you won't," he ground out, his eyes slamming shut for a moment. She wanted to protest, to bring them back to hers, but it felt like he'd done that to get a reprieve from looking at her. As if she was becoming too much for him.
It was probably a good thing. She already knew that was the case, it was about time he'd figured it out.
She exhaled softly, her own face shifting into something a touch more solemn. "The wording won't change the outcome."
It was Cassian's turn to shake his head, his loose hair flowing with the movement. Calling to Nesta, begging her to run her fingers through it.
"Please," he gasped, finally gifting her with his gaze again. "I can't lose you again, Nesta. Please, don't make me lose you again."
"Was it really a loss?"
"Yes."
No hesitation. No stuttering. No doubt in his tone nor fear in his eyes. It nearly had Nesta reconsidering, but she couldn't. Couldn't let herself get so close to him, not now that she truly knew how much he could hurt her. If just not recognizing her could send her into a downward spiral for a week, what would happen if they got closer only for him to pull away? How would she survive truly having him, only to then lose him?
He said he'd lost her once, but it wasn't the same. They weren't together. They were just friends - if she could call it that - who went off to different colleges, started different lives, and drifted apart.
It was better this way. Welcome in this small pain now, and avoid something truly devastating and heartbreaking later on when Cassian tired of her. When he realized that she wasn't - and had never been - good enough for him anyway.
Because that was one thing Nesta had always known. And she'd tricked herself on Halloween into thinking maybe it had changed, that the universe was sending her a sign that maybe they could be together. Only to slap her right in the face with the reminder that she was nothing in comparison to him. Successful, sure, according to their world's terms. But what was that to Cassian? When held up against his kindness, his strength, his bravery, his very being that was entirely good.
So she held her ground, hardened her stare, and let him read in her eyes that she wouldn't waver.
"Fine," he spat, letting go of her hand. A chill creeped around it the second he let it fall, and it only spread when he stepped even further away from her, his other hand no longer at her waist, but being shoved into his pocket. "If that's your decision, then fine. I'll respect it. But I don't agree with it."
"That's all I ask." Her voice was barely a whisper, loud enough to be heard, but soft enough that the cracking didn't come through.
He was shaking his head again, his lips pulled flat against each other in a sardonic smile. "I think you're making a mistake."
"No, I'm doing what's right," she argued. Could it really be a mistake to protect herself from the pain this man could reap?
He let out a scoff. "Whatever. Think what you want." He turned to leave but stopped as he opened the door, his hand still on the handle as he looked at her over his shoulder, his face slightly softer. "I've been waiting fifteen years for you, Nesta. I hadn't realized it at first. Not until I saw you this morning, and felt…complete for the first time in my life, thinking it would mean we could be together. But now I know, that's what I've been doing. I'd hoped it was the same for you…
"I'll keep hoping, keep waiting, because it's all I know how to do. But, one day, I may learn how to do something else. May learn how to be a good boyfriend, to be in a real, lasting relationship. I hope you come around before then. Before the first thing I learn is how to finally, truly move on."
Before she could even think about responding, Cassian left, the door closing softly behind him. Leaving Nesta sinking into her chair and burying her face in her hands as she let herself erupt. Let the tears crash down her face. Let her sobs escape her tightened throat.

I'd Find Something

Nesta goes to get her Christmas tree and gets help putting the tree on the roof of her car from an unexpected source.

a/n: Based on this request.

Honestly I'm a "text when something comes up but otherwise just sit and vibe in silence" type.
I vibe with this so much! 😂 I mean, I'll keep going, but conversations die. Sometimes with me, sometimes with others. And if people want to keep talking, I'll find ways, cause I can talk. XD But, at the same time, I'll sit and vibe on my own if not fed words from others. lol
It's terrifying. Truly terrifying.

😂 Honestly, I feel that about discord. It's always soooooo CRAZY. Like, why are there so many channels and places to go?! I've joined discords with ten people and there are 20 channels and I'm like "why?!"
I feel that. I'd probably give mine easily. 😂 But popping in and being like "hey!" for that...terrifying. Haven't done yet. 👀😂
I'm sure you don't disappoint! Sometimes we all just need time, space, or just to not talk. Some of us more than others, but that's okay!
I'm more of the "always around and love responding" type, and I don't work hard enough. 👀 But even then sometimes something will come in and I'll be like "eh, tomorrow". But I hate initiating. 😂 I will respond until the cows come home, but until I'm more comfortable, I'm like "wait, what if they don't wanna talk to me?"

It really would be! And I feel that. Especially as someone far too anxious to ever ask. 😂 Can we petition to get it back? 👀 Or, do we dare...discord? 😳
